    Bitwig way: place two transient controls in an FX-Layer, lower the gain on the attack in one and the gain of sustain in the other. Without anything added it sounds transparent. Then add effects to your liking to each (Mid-Side, Multiband, Dynamic sidechain EQ, use your imagination) and maybe go wild with the modulators on top of this.

  • @XRaym

    What I like the most with it is using on Kick with compressor on sustain and auto make up, then you just lower the threshold and you get a very Boomy kick, but still sounding natural.

    This was released before Split EQ - I think I bought it a around mid year. I haven’t updated it since the first download from back then - but it had some weird clicking artifacts that kinda put me off. Unlike Split EQ which was silky smooth. I like this because it’s a good one stop shop for sound design - but I probably wouldn’t put on master ;) but each to their own. Also I’m a big fan of Darude’s elctro funk phase in his career.

    There are multiple free plugins that can do spkit the signal into transient and sustain signals. Then you can just send each part to a different mixer track and use whichever plugins you like to process the sound. Or you can easily make a Patcher preset if you use FL.

    For those of you proposing to do this with a transient splitter, outboard effects, and then mixing the two signals back together, what about the phase issues he mentioned? I can see how a plug-in could account for them internally, but I suspect that once each signal emerges from the splitter that signal has been logically severed from its origin, so would naïvely mixing them back together actually work nicely?

    Couldn’t you use your own plugins in a less direct way by duplicating the track, and then cutting out all the transients out of one and all of the sustain out of the other, then you have the isolated sustain and transient signals on separate faders and you can apply whatever processing you want to just one, or both in how ever much, and whatever order you want to just one or the other signal… the benefit here yo this vs. split eq is that I think splitting the signal onto two tracks like I described above can be really useful in some situations where you want to do some more extreme sound design or repair, where split EQ is probably more convenient to grab if you just want to make some quick edits. If your kick needs more punch, setting up a whole instance of quantum properly could take a few minutes longer than just grabbing split eq and cranking up the low transients. However, if you want to take the sound of a guitarist strumming against their muted strings, and morph it into a complex new percussion element, getting to completely separate; and add plugins to an isolated transient channel could open some doors that split EQ only starts to touch on

    You could
    1) get a "attack" part with a gate
    2) and combine it with original with flipped phase to get the sustain part
    3) ...and process them separately. Flip the sustain parts polarity back before combining.
    Phase shouldn't be big big issue as parts are not having mutual content. I will need to try that out!
    edit: After quick testing it seems, that sustain part easily get "clicky" sounds for some reason (maybe gate is not fast enough) and as with the gates it's sensitive to volume changes. Maybe that's useful trick anyway.

    • @Sengin31
      @Sengin31 2 роки тому +1

      Ha, I've actually been experimenting with this for the last few days. Instead of a gate though, I used an envelope follower - changing the attack of the follower dictates how much time the transient takes. I wonder how different it would be to use a gate, thanks for the idea! As it stands right now, my experiment behaves really oddly with volume changes, and even soloing just the sustain is louder than the original signal...
      Why do you say you need to invert the sustain first? Since you subtract out the inverted "attack" you get only the sustain left, but without any phase change.

    The trick they are missing is not having a separate output for the transient and the sustain portion. Yes we can do it with 2 separate instances identical on discrete channels, but thats not ideal.

    This plugin has a really cool idea. Unfortunantely no plugin company will ever allow 3rd party plugins to be loaded into their framework, so we're stuck with Wavesfactory's own algorithms. That is, unless the major DAW manufacturers bring this concept into their software. What would be REALLY cool, is that if Reaper, Logic, Studio One, Pro Tools etc. brought this kind of a plugin 'shell' into their user interface, where you could load ANY plugin into either the attack or sustain portion of the signal. That could actually catch on, too. I mean, the primary income source for most of these companies are other than plugins, after all.

    Routing to split transient and sustain signals?
    *laughs in Studio One's splitter*
    On a more serious note, I don't think any of the transient shapers I have can go to -inf so I still have some bleed on both channels, but SPLIT-EQ did open my eyes to some fun sound design experimentation.
    I haven't tried this yet, but UVI drum replacer can also help split your signal in some interesting ways for anyone who has it and is interested in trying new stuff.

    • @AndreasR86
      @AndreasR86 2 роки тому

      @@D-One SO does parallel, stereo and mid/side, and frequency splits, but you can make a parallel split and load up plugins to split into transients and tails yourself.
      Currently I'm still using a regular transient shaper, but I wouldn't use that for mixing and mastering purposes (too much bleed between transient and tail) , but for sound design it's pretty useful.

    Or you can just use Transient Shaper in FL along with effects in Patcher

    I am not super happy with Quantum. Mostly because you can do this in the DAW and just use your own channel strip for it. It is cool for a one-stop shop, but mostly the fact that it seems to capture a production technique into a plugin. If you want to do this, is it really hard to do this with two REAPER tracks and two transient processors?

      How? Doubling all the drum tracks, completely remove the transitent for one track and remove the sustain for another so you can process each separately? Depeding on how the fade out of the transient part mixes with the sustain the crossfade point might not be perfect, resulting in a gain bump...

      @@D-One Yes, something like that. I can try to make an example, but it really shouldn't be too complex. From what I understand, Quantum basically is two transient shapers that have two processing chains with inserts that are then merged. It might be simplifying it a little. I tested it quickly with channel 1 sending to channel two, added two transient shapers from Kilohearts (just the first one that sprung to mind) and added Timeless and Saturn on the respective tracks, one dialed in to emphasize the transients and the other set to emphasize the sustains. I loaded up Quantum to do the "same thing". Doing it with Quantum was obviously faster but less flexible, and they obviously do not sound the same, but I really don't see why you cannot make them sound similar if that is what you're going for. If I could share a picture of the setup here, I would.

      @@D-One Yes, there is a gain bump, but Quantum also bumps the gain when you ask it to. The gain can be adjusted by just using the normal faders for the two tracks, and when you dial it in the way you want it, you can just add it to a group track to have a single fader. Quantum has these two gain faders in the plugin, which I guess you might prefer. One gripe I had with Quantum is that it generated a lot of phantom transients on some material I gave it, which could be improved easily with letting the Hold go over 100ms, perhaps even letting the hold time be host synced to beat. Not going to take away from it if you like it. :)

      @@D-One If you want, you can even just run a single transielt processor for attack, send the post FX signal from that to another track, and invert the polarity. I mean, I guess it can get a little complex quickly, but setting it up in REAPER isn't hard. Also, I think setting it up with something like Snap Heap is a very viable alternative. This is just me yapping at this point, happy holidays. :)

      @@larsthomasdenstad9082 It's not just two transient shapers, afaik it separates the transient/start from the tail/sustain like manually slicing off all transients and putting into a separate track; doing it manually is very common for drum sound designers but is only practical to work on a single one-shot sample that you then export to make kits.
