Always the most analytical and accurate information on the web!!!! I graduated this mans course. It changed the way I make decisions. I understanding what I am doing and why! It really helps when you truly have a good understanding of equalizers and curves. I know when I grab G vs E why it sounds better or worse and which curve is best for the task at hand! AZ is the man!!!!!
Thank you Andrew as always for breaking it down and for providing such useful information. Absolutely appreciate all the testing you always do. I'm surprised about Kirchhoff EQ but it's great to know and understand the tools. Thank you for doing it!
Thanks for checking this out for us and sharing! I've been using the Kirchhoff a lot lately and love the "swiss pocket knife" EQ options... This is really sobering though...
Hi From USA - great job on your channel and the course sounds good. On the website where Kirchhoff EQ is advertised it says, "* No non-linear behaviors were modeled. All vintage filter types only contain ideal linear parts of their physical model.". I don't know what they mean by "ideal linear parts". I was under the impression that people like those modeled classic EQ's for their unique filter curve response, along with other aspects (sorry if that's a poor description). Instead I suppose it's possible we're talking about Kirchhoff simply modeling something about phase response, but using linear filter curves as a starting point? TBH I have no idea... For comparison I found this in the DMG Equilibrium manual, that also has some analog EQ models: "Analogue provides the same cumulative minimum phase response as hardware. Zero-latency analogue uses only the tail portion of the impulse response, thus allowing for zero latency but at the cost of phase accuracy at higher frequencies. Minimum phase applies a transformation to reduce the phase delay as far as possible." As regards setting the top setting to Analog mode, this is what the manual says about it: "Generally, every type of digital filter has its corresponding analogue prototype. You can imagine the concept of "analogue prototype" as what an ideal filter behaves like at an infinite sample rate. It is obvious that the sample rate is limited in the digital world, thus there are differences between the digital implementation and its analogue prototype. The Analogue Prototype Simulation is to compensate the difference on amplitude and phase at the expense of processor intensity and latency."
The funny thing is when these EQ came out, i did't give them any time to check it out, because i already was in mixing course by Andrew, you learn in the course fundamentals knoledge about Soundmixing so that you don't care what comes out, cause you can do same job with every stock EQ plugin.
It says it right in the manual . They'r not analog emulation of the vintage units in the plug-in . Rather just the hardware model look. Don't know why they would even bother if they don't emulate. I like the eq still . I don't use those hardware face plate . The only thing it emulates is the way the hardware looks. LOL.
This is what I loved about your teaching during your course Andrew Sir, your so amazing at explaining the minute nuances that no one explains, Im a proud sound engineer today, thanks for your precious guidance, a client of mine was number one on the jazz i tunes American charts a month back, very proud student of yours. Hi Sir, yes it has, been busy honing my craft, all thanks to you, for all those precious moments, always keeping an eye out for the goodies you put out
Great analysis. I think it would have been even better to use Plugin Doctor to compare the actual curves of all the plugins side by side. So the SSL Channelstrip 2 is a 9000 J as well?

I always thought analog curve emulation in this plugin was a bs marketing thing. as you said, if I want narrow curves I would just go for a digital eq. it could be implemented better, though. pulsar massive for instance did it right: you have the graphic eq but since its a proper analog emulation (that, unlike kirchhoff, also adds saturation) you can't make narrow curves and steep cuts

And even though I'm a Ukrainian I find it strange that they ban Belorussians for example for Russian invasion. But not banning Americans for many countries invasions. Double standards. So instead of doing decent plugins they work on politics.
Great information. i will take what i learned from this video but also with the realization that you didn't switch the plugin to linear phase or activate oversampling or any of the other advanced features that may have effected the curve results. Also if in not mistaking the Kirchhoff EQ is only copying the curves and not emulating the analogue circuits so there is no harmonic distortion which would also effect the shape of the curves. In conclusion, I agree with your study for what it is while taking those other things into account as well being sure to use this plugin properly and for the purpose its intended, not for analogue emulations. Thanks for taking the time to educate and teach and bring awareness. I hope everyone else is able take this information, analyze it and apply it properly.
Really? SSL is not linear phase and he didn't engage Linear phase too. Also "Kirchhoff EQ is only copying the curves and not emulating the analogue circuits" the video is about the curves. Don't make excuses for the plugin.
