  • This is an instructional video to show just how easy it is to swap a stock second gen f-body steering box for a new quick ratio GM 670 steering box. This was my first time changing a steering gear box and although the lift did make the job easier, it was in no way needed to do this job. This upgrade kit can be purchased from Pro-TouringF-Body.com

    Just ordered mine from Dave at PTFB. I already have a combo of his 1LE and GT suspension under the car. Along with everything else he sells.

    This is a helpful video. A couple of things: First, when they send you this box, they give you a yellow painted line on the pitman arm spline and the box itself so you can make sure you are oriented straight the first time, so your wheels point straight and the steering wheel etc all does as well.
    Second: I just got my box from Dave at PTFB, but it did not come with the AN adapter fittings. Found them on Ebay under a listing that advertises GM box to AN for IMCA modified series (M16x1.5mm and m18x1.5mm). My box came as a metric O-Ring female, not a flare fitting. 78 and older is flare fitting, 79 and newer is metric O-Ring. Just get the metric o-ring to 6 AN and you're good.
    Worth running a power steering cooler: adds extra fluid capacity which inherently provides a cooler running system and of course the air moving past the fins cools as well. You are good with a push-lock style AN fitting/hose on the return side (low pressure side). The AN hose you buy for the pressure side needs to be able to operate safely at around 1,000 psi. Your standard EFI rated stuff won't cut it.
    New lock washer and pitman nut comes with the box. One thing that Travis didn't do, that I recommend you do, is to at first move the tire by hand in the air first. Leave the power steering reservoir cap off and move the tires left to right a few times by hand before even starting the engine and then check your reservoir. You should have some more room for more fluid. Start the engine with the front end up in the air. You do not want to load up your box with air still trapped in the system. Let the wheels hang out in the air, move the steering wheel left to right, purging the air from the system. Top off with more fluid until you no longer see bubbles coming from the reservoir. Lower the tires to the ground, check some more, but you should be good to go. If you've got loads of air and you decide to put strain on your box with tires on the ground, you could be starving the box of lubrication which isn't good for it. With that being said, this box is the best, most heavy duty you can buy, so you're probably not doing much, if any, damage by doing it Travis' way.

      @5:55 he mentions the steering has been blead. Due to the weather, it seems like he finished the video on a different day. But you are correct with your comments.

    How different is it on high speed stability, cornering and parking?

    • @travishartwell3000
      @travishartwell3000  4 роки тому

      GHT RCP It’s going to improve your high speed steering feel only. For cornering you will notice a much more crisp steering feel and much faster response making it a lot easier to drive at or over the edge. Parking won’t change much accept for less turns required.

      Ricky Ricardo PTFB sent a new rag joint with the steering box. I don’t remember if it was different than stock or not. I hope that helps.
