  • I go over the 4 traits to have as an ER nurse. Not all ER nurses have these traits, however they are common traits that most ER nurses seem to have. ER nursing isn't for everyone however, each type of personality can bring something to the ER nursing career field. Hopefully this video helps put some perspective on the personalities in the ER.

I think I can elaborate more for a person who has no knowledge of what really happens in the eye of an ER. I was a scribe and a unit secretary back in the day...I was also an EMT-B. But I learned quickly that EMS is different from being an ER Nurse. When I saw a few codes coming in I started noticing that in fact ER Nurses aren't adrenaline junkie's. What I did see, on every single shift I worked, was a family...we were all family...we all appreciated one another...it didnt matter what role you played in that ED, everyone matters. I had the privilege of working with every single nurse there....They are very focused, they are sometimes moody or just flat out bitchy hahaha....BUT when shit went down, everyone had each others backs because at those moments that are so critical (the golden hour) is the patient. If someone has pissed you off at any point, all emotions go out the door to keep that patient alive. The ER is a team...its stressful because of nutty people, hollering family members, drunk people, suicidal people, someone that is combative because he/she is high as a Georgia pine or tweaked out on some illicid drug I'd never heard of but always saw the effects. What people see is the aggressive actions of trauma nurses and that is very different than being an adrenaline junkie. At the end of the day, no matter who's toes you have stepped or who has stepped on yours...we high five the hell out of each other and sometimes hug if it was a shit day.....One more thing I want the non-medical community to know.........The RNs....LITERALLY keep the patients alive. Yes, doctors do their assessments and prescribe meds and order whatever test BUT the nurse (using their special skills) do everything to keep your ass alive because they are the ones who monitor you, as a patient at all times. I've seen many codes ran by ER nurses...when I was a scribe, I'd have to go into the trauma rooms, well any room, with the attending ED doc during some of the most scariest things I have ever seen, even with EMS. I can tell you, the nurses have a protocol, standing orders, and they work like savages to save someone...the doc walks in, listens to their lungs or whatever and stands at the head of the bed or in a corner and will call out meds. I stood in my little corner and I was completely puzzled hahahaha.....the nurses do everything and yes, they catch med errors and such that busy doctors may have prescribed a wrong dose or the nurse will inform the doc that a patient can't take something or go to a procedure because of a patients condition or their conditions have changed.....Okay I'm getting off my soap box now...but NO they aren't adrenaline junkies at all, they are crazy smart though and ive learned more from them and the ER docs than any college class could ever afford me.....cheers to all of my ER Nurses..you are amazon people and I thank you all for studying your bums off in Nursing School and all nurses do that matter....I have so much respect do this profession....Ugh...I hope after my next few classes I will get into nursing school 😉

This was such an awesome video. I have an interview for an ER position tomorrow and I'm super excited. This video is reassuring me of my reasons of wanting to start in this specialty. Thanks so much Nomad Nurse!

Thank you for this. I am so not type A but can't wait to learn, work hard and help others. I was feeling nervous about starting in the ED next week but I got this and I know it will get better with time.

Love your videos, Crosby. I'm a MICU nurse in Chicago, getting my DNP now. Nursing is its own reality.

It's true about "adrenaline junkies" or "trauma junkies".... they usually don't make good ED nurses. They're always drawn to the "interesting" things that are going on but tend to neglect their own patient's needs in the process. I steer clear of the self-proclaimed "trauma junkies" and would rather work with the team players.

    I'm in an LVN/ASN program currently it's a 17-month full-time accelerated course on nursing
when I graduate from the course I want to apply to a hospital that has an E.R. I know it's gonna be crazy and scary and etc.. etc.. but I feel that that will help me to learn a lot of critical Nursing skills for trauma or just some good life-saving skills. maybe later I will do med surge or something else but I think if I start off as an E.R. Nurse I can learn some really important skills.

Imagine if there is an ER Nurse somewhere out there who goes skydiving RIGHT after her/his shifts.
(If I get into the ER, I think I'm gonna do that for a year. That'll be my interview selling point lol)

You won't have the energy some days to drive home. Speaking as someone currently working in the ER
