Update to the CBCS turnaround times. There’s a separate page I failed to see when pulling the dates, unlike CGC they update it on a different tab. Although still significantly shorter, the turnaround isn’t as good as we chatted about during this vid.
CBCS Turnaround is as followed (as of 9/30)
Modern: 17 weeks
Expanded: 19 weeks
2 day: 1 week
Consumer: 19 weeks
Quickstream: 4 weeks
Rapid: 1 week
1-Day: 1 week
Seems a little sketchy to put it on a different tab so new people submitting might miss it like you did... Kinda like moving Verified books to a Yellow Label.
@@johngregorywynn6075 I'd hardly call it sketchy when it's a blue tab at the top of the page, no matter what CBCS page you are on. Problem is, they need to either update it on the pricing page or get rid of it. And definitely get rid of the word "currently", because it's just not. But they are clearly not trying to sneak one by.
@@johngregorywynn6075 why is a verified signature being on a yellow label a problem? As long as they do their due diligence to ensure the integrity of the signature. Why has the community accepted that a company must have a paid witness to get a label that actually acknowledges a signature rather than a green label stating “Something written on cover”.
🍺
@@SgtGoose1327 I’ve seen instances where fake sigs were sent and verified, so imo having a witness eliminates all doubt
I think it's crazy that these grading companies have so much power over the economics of comic books.
The census is like the Sacred Timeline. Great analogy Tom.
Yep. Other than the fact it's absolutely nowhere near correct. It's super important
Talk about holding your breath!!! Lol When Jeff was going down the middle of that book!!! Bruh….hahaha Nice to see how to crack it out of a slab though.
Never thought about sending the label back in to have it taken off census. Good tip. Great video like always
Dude I’m so glad to hear you acquired your personal grail Tom! That’s just phenomenal. As always great looking book Jeff.
I just got off the phone with CGC as I had sent in 2 boxes, one box had 14 books and the other had 24. One box had a “walkthrough” and an “express” and the other box had an “express”. I’ve never sent in anything higher than “standard” and I failed to read in the instructions to write EX or WT on the perimeter of the boxes like y’all mentioned. They were cool about it and within 24hrs both boxes were checked in, all books! So that was awesome cuz the other books were economy and standard. Great content as always👍🏻
What is Ex and Wt is this express and walk thru ? Do you need to write this on there on say the package u send in ?
Loppo
Great info guys. I just recently started sending books for grading. You all helped me decide on my next submissions.
I'm really glad you guys made this video. Hopefully the grading companies watch this and see what they need to improve on. I feel that being up-front with the community is a great move. If the grading companies see this video and see what people want the companies to do in terms of better quality, price ect... it should entice them to do better and try and outdo the each other. Competition is always good for the consumer/community. Great video guys!!!
I've been reading comics most of my life but never really cared about the price of the comics I read, only the content. Watching this and being apart of different online groups has really opened my eyes to the greater world of comics. I don't plan on getting many graded books in my life but I very much enjoy watching others talk and spend their money on pieces of paper I couldn't fathom owning. Thank you for the content!
Not to trigger Jeff any more than he already is ;) but I'm a "it's the book, not the grade" guy so I prefer the subtle CBCS label. Not the price-sticker look of CGC with the gawdy hologram too (preferably, a shorter label too. 1" height at most). But, since you chose to show an old, obsolete CBCS label in the comparison shot instead of their current label, can we talk about the early CGC labels...? ;)
For me it's not the TATs or cost difference. It's that after all the stuff I've seen the last year, I trust the grade and the quality control of CBCS. The "both sides" argument becomes weak after doing the research.
I may not agree, but I respect you guys.
Good show... again.
Good Video. The present CGC cases are so nice. Even Mid-Grade books ‘POP’ after being slabbed 👍👍👍
I have 5 books still at CGC that I sent in April. As a pure collector, I’m not sending anything in again until they get their act together.
Uh, I have books at CGC that have been there since LAST October. April is nothing.
@@TT-fq7pl I feel your pain. Mine are April, but I have no reason to believe that they won't be there until next April. They're at least checked in...so there's that I guess?
@@Lithograph_Comics Well, there is a chance you'll get them back sooner. I've heard that books shipped eight months to a year ago are still sitting there, while books shipped a few months ago are being processed. It's almost as if CGC has a Citizen Kane room where they just piled everything that overwhelmed them last fall and early this winter, and they've decided to start fresh with newer submissions. Not fair, of course, but plausible.
@@TT-fq7pl That would be a pretty messed up thing to find out, that someone who sent in their books later than you did gets their books graded before you.
@@pillar81 Yes, it's really disappointing. I submit to CGC via my LCS, and the owner says he's getting stuff back that he sent in three or four months ago, but submissions he made almost a year ago aren't back yet. Apparently CGC will immediately grade signature series books, for example. Each week I expect to get some comics back, but months go by and still there's nothing. It really has soured me on the whole process.
I held my breath until the scissors finished cutting the top edge of that Avengers 8 slab 😱
This video greatly helped me today. I have been buying up a bunch of comics since about March. Silver Bronze and Modern. Just getting into collecting. I just want to say I appreciate the show immensely. I just signed up for a CGC account recently and am really struggling with the numbers on what to send out to be graded based on turnaround times and what they are charging. I will be sending different books to different places based on this video. All CBCS has to do to get all my business instead of some is spend some time making a more attractive label for their cases. I hope that some people from their company see these comments and make a change. Golden age Guru is right its a shark tank moment.
A better label would significantly raise my interest in using its services.
I want to thank you guys again.. For someone like me who has been collecting for a while but never graded or sold anything.. this is good info and insights..
Super happy for you guys. Collecting super rare books of what you love it where it's at.
Big Shout Out Tom! I'm a Huge Hellboy Collector myself. I'm currently trying to get the SDCC #2, and The Dime Press #4. I currently do have Hellboy: Seeds of Destruction #1 signed by Ron Pearlman, CBCS 8.5, and a Next Man #21, CGC 9.8, and Next Man #14. So SDCC #2 & Dime Press #4 are next on my checklist.
As always, GREAT SHOW!
thank you for taking the time to dive into this topic great info and helpful on future considerations
Hello from Canada! New subscriber here and have been loving your regular content. This video was great and very educational for a relative newbie like me. I am very new to the grading and slabbing game having sent our my first set of books a couple months ago. I sent to CGC as that is my pressers' preference but I found your conversation around the CGC vs. CBCS debate very helpful. I have two non-witnessed signed books I want to send in to CBCS but was debating if I should send a few more in as well that aren't signed. Your POV on the modern variants and decision to send them in versus other keys makes total sense to me and helped me make the decision to send in some additional books to CBCS. Thanks for the great content!
Great vid. I'm a keep it raw guy (though I do have a Batman #92 modern I won) but I do understand the reasons people slab their books. Interesting conversation.
When I go to cons I am a signature hound (I always try to be mindful of quantity and lines), but I've rarely ever used a CGC signature witness. So I have more than a few books with unwitnessed signatures. One of the best services CBCS offers is signature verification.
"I don't play well with others"......lol great.
Just seen something rare…. 50 copies of Marvel Super Heroes #8 still bound in twine in a Comic Book shop in Southern Oregon today in a display case from 1984 they looked great….the dealer said he would not break them up…Wow
Congrats on acquiring the grail, Tom! Always great to see a fellow collector get to check that box.
Great video. The CGC vs CBCS topic was legit and fair. Always a thoughtful conversation with you two. A close second to @ComicswithBuehler Coffee and Comics 😉.
Once CBCS changes their labels, maybe even have customized labels to match the book, the game will have officially changed and CGC will be in big trouble. How CBCS doesn't see this, boggles my mind.
hey Steven i just wrote a comment about them comparing the cgc labels to the old cbcs labels. just wanted to ask if you've seen the new cbcs labels and slabs and what you think of them. the cbcs label they show is garbage but the new one is really nice i think.
@@danielward3929 i really like the slabs. How new are the cbcs labels you have? I have one from last year and it's very basic and doesn't inspire when i look at it
@@RC-1207 i have the newest labels. since cbcs changed their labels and slabs i've been sending my books in to get reslabbed. unless you have an old cbcs label right next to a new label you might not see the difference. they are pretty subtle changes. they used darker blues and a bolder font for the grade. definitely pretty plain compared to the cgc labels but a vast improvement from the label they showed in the video
Thank you for the information and your honest opinion about both grading company.
👏👏👏Bravo ComicTom Bravo!!! well said. Just too many people saying the value is not there for CBCS but it's up to the seller to stick by what they value the book at. For example I have gorgeous slab from CBCS on a 9.4 SIKTC #1 Frison variant which raw is going for $230 and just because it's a CBCS people are trying to lowball me at the low $100's. It is a graded 9.4 and I am not going to sell it less than what the raw book is going for. It's a shame that people feel like if "it's not CGC" that they shouldn't consider the value and as you said it is up to the seller to stick to what the real value behind the book is. I applaud you for that, I hope people take that into consideration because competition is always good specially to a seller. Kuddos to the both of you for this show, ya'll rock!!
The fact that people have more faith in a raw book than a graded book, regardless of what company did it, is amusing.
Tom and Jeff. I loved this podcast. Such a useful video. I’m actually gonna rewatch the “numbers” part tho bc math hasn’t been my strong suit. Still gotta keep growing, stretching, and learning. Thanks for laying this out for the ComicFam where we can understand the best options.
Fantastic job fellas!!! I think CBCS is really missing out on some major opportunity with their label issue. I recently purchased a couple of key books. I paid more for the CGC graded slab vs saving a few bucks and getting a crappy label from CBCS.
I've never INTENTIONALLY cracked open a slab, but literally ten minutes after getting my Wolverine #1 back from CGC in a 9.8, it had fallen off the top of a cabinet and smashed on the floor! It's currently on its way back to Florida, so I hope they don't downgrade it!
How long did you wait to get it back the first time u sent it out ?
I could definitely see myself having a graded book fall from a cabinet. I dread the day that this happens to me.
Real dope pickup on the grail. Great stuff fellas I’m Puerto Rican also 🤙🏼
Congrats on the grails guys! Those are awesome collectibles!
CBCS is best and cases are tanks, but if the biggest issue with new case is the label CGC is losing big time
So its better to send to cbcs and why?
@@ziggyc4474 Better case, better price, better turn around, and more accurate grading
Congratulations on the grail, Tom. Good luck on that Cap 1.
"but tell me about grails man, because when grails come, you gotta grab it you may never see it again." Tom with the textbook definition of FOMO!
Fantastic discussion! You mentioned paying for CGC grader notes but they are free with membership. And the premium membership gives you a credit for the cost of the membership so it is essentially free. Also newton rings can be fixed pretty easily by sliding a thin piece of cardstock between the case and the inside sleeve. I think with the new cases you have to go up from the bottom. There are videos out there.
Congrats on your grail! That's a super cool item!
Saw your recent video with GEM 💎 You're the best comic book values dynamic duo on UA-cam! #subscribed 😎👍
I bought a CGC 9.8 new book from Unknown Comics and noticed that if you put a little pressure along the top edge, I found out by picking it up by that edge, the edges would squeeze together and make a creaking sound. I contacted Unknown, who had me contact CGC who said it wasn't defective.
Cracked open a Superman's Pal Jimmy Olson CBCS 8.5 OW/W pages, send to CGC for Neal's signature and a press. Got it back at a 9.4 White pages. Victory!
Every time I watch your videos I want to get a grail
Great show guys!
Fantastic conversation! Amazing facts!🤘🏽
Great show guys, congrats on the grail Tom :) I love the CBCS cases, the way they give grading notes for free and their general outlook as a business but .....I just cannot hand over money with those labels !! Crazy ;-?
I learned a lot from this video. Thanks a lot.
This was awesome because I'm getting ready to grade some comics for the first time
There will be times when I back and forth about whether or not I want to start sending books off to get graded. I personally don't like collecting slabs, but the monetary aspect is hard to ignore when you compared raw sales to graded sales. However, as of now I plan to stick with collecting almost exclusively raw books because I like the personal connection that it allows me to have with the book itself instead of a plastic shell.
Maybe you can use a backboard in between the comic and the inner well to keep the comic from getting scratched? Oh and that quote.... "today's books at tomorrows prices"... that needs to go on a shirt!
I thought the CGC turnaround times started when the package arrived at CGC, not when CGC ingested the order in their systems. Sad as I think it will be close to a year before I get my books back. :(
Ridiculous.
Love the podcast ❤️
I'm glad I could get that grails to you😀👍
If you're going to remove a CGC or CBCS book from their well use a box cutter with the well indent facing up and try to split open three sides, you might want to invest in a flex cutting board for this. With all three sides open you can lift the back of the well like a page and put a backing board behind the book to provide support before you remove it. If you cut two sides be very careful as sometimes the book will not easily slide out and if it just suddenly moves it might catch a piece of the sliced open well and tear part of the book. I only recommend scissors only if you are having trouble cutting through wedges, but trust me enough force and a fresh box cutter blade will go through wedges as well. Also, watch your hand placement, do not provide steadying pressure on the spine side of the book as you can cause damage via bends, try to stick to the page side or as close to as the is supposed to bend. One last thing, if you want a fast and dirty way to open the latest CGC or CBCS holders buy a pin hammer. Then put the book on a solid flat surface and tap up and down along one of the long sides of the case breaking the plastic and the seal. From there use something to pry that side open, I recommend a stubby flat head screwdriver. Once you can lift open one side you can slide the well out and/or crank back on the top piece to snap it off. I do recommend eye protection anytime you're breaking open a case regardless of what company it's from.
Careful! Don't hurt yourself! Great video, guys!
I am so glad you got those clear boards . Especially in mag size. I put my Tmnt'in a sandwich with them like a make shift CGC case. Congrats on the book!
Yoooooooo tommy !! Damm I was biting my lip when u was cutting that slab!! OMG I deft anit doing that dope vid as always man!! Watching u I learn something new everyday I got me back in the hobby man I stopped getting comics since the 90s when McFarlane broke in the game !! 😢😢
Journey into mystery #112 CGC 9.2 recently sold for $3500 Canadian wow
The amount of times I heard 'Pull it out'...to quote Archer... "Phrasing!" Great episode guys! Congrats on that grail ComicTom, very happy for you! Always a pleasure to see the Comic Guru wax lyrical on slabs and golden Age....Jeff you ever considered righting a book on Comic Collecting?! (I would totally buy it) 👍👍👍
Dude 5ggggggs for that Hell Boy grail 😮 wow!!! Nice job maning up on it. ❤️
I actually sold my copy ofthe Stray Dogs Crow homage because it had some spine ticks. When I bought another copy, it looked pretty sharp…until I saw some finger rub. 😟 Now I’m on the lookout for a new copy.
I’d love to get a better copy to get graded.
With CGC waiting times hitting 21 weeks, I’ll be lucky if it before the end of the year.
Y'all forgot to cover the new comicbook grading company breaking into the market.
Love that you said Grade your books with CBCS and price them with CGC prices. 👍🏼👍🏼
Best podcast yet. Keeping it 💯
Love this show!
I’ve buying CGC slabs and just did my first submission. I choose CGC because I already have CGC. I’m considering CBCS for other books like Geiger that I have not yet purchased or submitted to CGC.
I dropped off a few books at terrificon at the beginning of August to cbcs and they still haven't been received into their system.
1:42:50 WELL SAID! The next 4-5 min rant needs to enter the ears of all buyers, sellers, collectors, dealers, store owners and so on, Then to continue the conversation to keep it alive and further educate others.
I have reentered the comic game after many years away! I sent books to CGC when they began….no issues with turn around time or grades. When I sold the books definitely made a difference. Have books to send now and have the dilemma is CGC vs CBCS. Points are well taken….personal choice but think will even itself out….my big dilemma now. How to price raw books vs encapsulated books. Would love to hear you chat about that. Thanks for the great content!!
I had bought a Micronauts #1 cgc 8.0, it was dirty and needed a press. I cracked it open ( got a bit impatient and snapped a big piece and cut my hand , so go slow) cleaned it, pressed it and it was way better. But came back 7.5 cgc. Sometimes i think either they are grading tougher than they used to.
Great video thank you for the content and time
Ok...just saw the Plastic Man tat. Mad respect. Quality Comics Plastic Man 39 is my current desired grail. Been chasing it for 6 years.
Sent comics to cgc in mid May. Not marked received until July 1st . Now October 1st and has been "scheduled for grading" for weeks. And they already ran my credit card
Congrats on the key man, awesome stuff!!!!!
sorry GRAIL!
The biggest issue for me CGC or CBCS, customer service. CBCS has almost 0, I had to reach out to Steve Borock to help find my 2 day modern submisson that had been delivered for 3 months. After 5 phone calls, 2 emails, also unanswered for a month after the regional manager asked for my UPS tracking, then never got back to me. That should never happen, the people on the phone should be able to call/email someone in the warehouse or vault and get it sorted. But I do love the CBCS case, it is way way better than the CGC case.
Agreed. Worst customer service. I was ghosted by them and my slab looks awful. Greasy wheel streaks on front and back that don't wipe off.
Really enjoyed the grail talk. Both got me some goose flesh..literally. Love Hellboy and Alex Schomburg. My personal grail is New Warriors #1. Mission accomplished.
Those CBCS times are inaccurate you must go to the turnaround tab at the top of the home page for accurate times for example modern is about 17 weeks
Yea just noticed that. I appreciate you mentioning something it’s still significantly shorter but I’ll post an update
@@ComicTom101 I've tried to get them to change it but they haven't. Maybe a bigger UA-camr like you can get them to by doing an update
I use both and I like both. I haven't had any issues with CBCS yet but I've had a few with CGC. I've had wrong labels on my slab, the newton rings, I've had the label not secured in its area so it moves around, and I have had books shipped to me without the plastic bag around the slab. That being said I'll still use both. In fact I have probably 30-40 books I am going to grade soon that are being split up between the two.
I only slab the ones I take to work to display on my office walls. Bragging rights.
Great video just bought my first 9.8. Bought the same book one from cgc one cbcs
I sent my books in with my presser end of August and now I am getting them back next week from cgc … I feel like this is unheard of turnaround time.
CBCS has the same issues in my experience. I sent my books in and waited 6 weeks before they acknowledged receipt. (It could be because it was sent in during a coupon offering)
Overall I have been happy with their service.
My books was delivered to CGC 2 weeks ago hopefully I have my books back by my birthday in February
Congratulations on finally getting your grail!
Congratulations on the grills fellas
Have about 9 short boxes of graded books I'm going to be selling. Most of them are CGC but a few are CBCS. It'll be interesting to me to see if there is a price difference when I end up selling them.
Yea heard about the spiral nights. Never seen one.
Congrats on the SLC program
Jeff was killing me with that Cookeville pronunciation. Cook-ville or Cook-vul if you want to be extra southern.
I have no books submitted currently since we sent in 13 books all came back severely damaged either damaged by USPS and ignored by CBCS and they went ahead and graded them without notifying us so we could at least put in a claim through insurance, or the staff damaged them at CBSS and said nothing. All had damage in the exact same spot. The grading notes even says “impact” for each book.
They did not take long to return them but another order that went in March received in April finally came back last week.
They refuse to take any accountability of the damaged books by the way costing me thousands of dollars because of how they handled my books.
I might also point out they will not communicate with us about resolving this matter. They just don’t seem to be professional about this matter. I guess I am going to have to walk into the offices at McEwen Rd. and have a little talk with them. in the meantime customers at the shop are waiting to hear if this gets resolved and in the meantime will only use CGC so they don’t have the same experience. Very unprofessional and disturbing. this being said, all my other experiences with books returned by CBCS have been fine which just makes this very surprising.
I cut the right edge with a scissors the same manner as the top edge. Seems much safer than going through the middle and risking touch the cover with the scissor or creating a sharp from the cuts. I see no advantage cutting down the middle.
Congrats!!
@1:18:30 Ive always wondered how CGC calculates value when they receive a book. Many issues, the value drop (based on Ebay sales and/or GoCollect data) from 9.8 to 9.2 or even 9.4 can be significant. Let's say I send in a book at the
After seeing Jeff's reaction to the Tomb of Dracula #1, there's a new topic for discussion. How many people have sold books/other collectibles to friends only to the see it/them take off in value.....? I have a small one. A friend went to Japan and bought some Pokemon packs from one of the Pokemon Centers. They gave him a promo card for free with his purchase. He gave me the card. It's worth about $300 right now. He stills gets "mad" whenever he sees me.... 🤣
Lol in animal breeding we call that kennel blindness. In psychology it's also called something. I'm old I forget . But when I can't see the flaws in my own blood it's called kennel blind
Totally agree with your tier system, makes sense.
Week 12. I was going to go with Spiderman #22. Buuuuuuuut, sticking with the black and white theme, my vote will go to Superman #3. My money will also be going to this cover.
Love the Golden Tickets. Got them the last 2 months. Sent my first submissions to CBCS last month. Will be mailing more in 2 weeks. The worst part is waiting.
I got a space usagi volume 2 yellow convention cover with sketch and signed by Sakai is a rare comic?
Love that t shirt Tom were did you get it. Must have one for myself
Hot topic
What about PGX? They recently opened an east coast branch and I have had a few books already graded and returned from it.
Getting my books back in about 3 weeks. I am dropping off and picking up locally so that helps as well.
Would be nice if CGC had local pick up since their office is close as well.
First time viewer and now first time subscriber. I enjoyed every minute of the discussions.
