I found it hilarious that ComicTom was laughing his ass off while breaking Jeff's heart with these grades. 🤣
It was pretty hot
I love how Guru is such a perfectionist that he’s frustrated he didn’t hit the grade he thought on some books even tho he has $100,000 sitting in front of him…lol…Thanks for putting yourself out there, Jeff. You’re the man.
Lower grades 2.0-3.5 are really hard to pin down, I had a Journey into Mystery 84 that I was sure would get a 2.0 maybe a 2.5 it had staple tears, multiple cover creases at the corners and along the spine as well as a 3 inch tear on the front cover, it came back a 3.5, I was really happy but it blew my mind that it got that high. I think cgc has hired too many newbs this year and grading has been really hard on books in 2022, graders should have a minimum of 5 years grading experience before being able to judge a book for encapsulation, that's my opinion, instead they're taking any joe or Karen off the street giving em a few weeks maybe a month or two training and letting them grade people's INVESTMENTS!! It's unconscionable
I'd prefer CGC stick their newbie graders on comics from 1990 to present. There is much less variation on those, so grading can only fluctuate but so much. My Bronze Age submissions have been all over the board on grades received.
I absolutely want to see MY CGC grades live when I open the box. You do you Guru!
AWESOME VIDEO GUYS. LOVE THEM HULK 181'S. WOW A 9.2 THAT IS SWEET ON A BRONZE AGE BOOK. CONGRATS ON THE WINS. SOME OF THE LOWER GRADED BOOKS LOOK ALOT NICER THAN THE GRADES CGC GAVE THEM. A FEW MIGHT BE WORTH A RESUMIT. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS WITH US. THE GURU IS THE MAN.
I love the surprise from CGC. The emotional roles coaster of what my grades are when I view them is nuts.
Fantastic video… thank you for waiting and sharing Guru!
Just the fact that he owns 21 hulk 181s is amazing to me🤯
Long time listener, First time Caller…… I know this isn’t radio. Loved the video. Been following you guys for awhile. I feel your frustration. Cgc has hit my submissions of multiple copies of the same book really hard. It seems like they use the books against each other for comparison instead of grading them separately. Supposed to treat them as individual books but it’s like they compare them side by side and it brings them down. Not one but two times I have set 2 copies of a book in and they came back 1.0-2.0 negative bump. I was concerned with your submissions of similar grades of the same book. On average you’re on track but 6 of those books I would resubmit them separately and spread them out. Maybe a different grader or at least by them selves without instant comparison of each of them side by side comparison. Just my opinion. I’ll see you on the next Hunt! Tony.
Can't help but think if you would have graded those two or three years ago the grades would have been higher in general. Cgc has gotten way tougher in the last couple years
Dear Comic Tom & Co: (My other account is Comics, Coins, Stamps, Collectables & Gaming): I have been keeping my eye on Covrprice and the Key Issues they feature a number of time every day for quite a while now. (I do also review key collector comics from time to time). One thing I have noticed is that, unsurprisingly, there are keys which show up at the top of the lists regularly. But it's that Spawn 9 - first appearance of Angela. It's quite a print run on it of course, but this feeling that that cover sort of stands out quite a lot. It's quite iconic. Got this feeling it's one of those comics which the collectors will always want, and it is probably always going to rise. For a 25 year investment, I would think the return is probably very high.
I know Guru was upset with a lot of these grades, but this video was insane to see. What an experience.
Looking forward to the follow up video!
Totally agree with the Guru's assessment of the grades. I wish there was a better system in place for grading books. It really just comes down to one person's opinion and observations at the grading companies.
I just sent in books and I got the USPS delivered notification. Now waiting for CGC to update as received on my account.
“You lack discipline!” I always stick to being surprised in person with cgc openings
It’s the best part of the whole process it’s like a birthday present 🎁 lol
God bless this man for coming on the mic to bear his disappointments and despair for the comic fam. Happy that he at least got the 9.2 though 💪 intriguing stuff
Man I've never seen anyone disappointed like this guy is with $100k worth of comic books in front of him
Awesome podcast! Would love to see this with the 180's!
I use the absorene eraser on everything I clean. Basically white eraser and absorbent is all that's needed ..and a good lint free baby cloth.
The Guru almost quotes the old man from that beer commerical!
Been waiting to see this for ages!!! 👀
those 2.0’s were graded before lunch
That CGC 8.0 unreal. Book looks amazing!
CGC has been very hard in grading bronze and modern keys of late. At least they are constant in that.
Would love to see a video with those graders notes being discussed and analyzed.
If artificial intelligence is able to grade books in the future. How would everybody feel about it?
I bought four books in 2003 and I asked about a 181 and the guy just threw it in on the deal it’s a CGC 6.0.
Congrats on the hustle Of having that many of those books and having the foresight to hold onto them
It is possible to grade a book by pixels, but it is a very time consuming process and requires much upfront data. But a computer vision system can actually count the number of pixels that have a defect compared to a pristine copy. You can also program it to detect color break vs non-color break crease and assign different weighting to the defective pixels. You could detect water stains vs other types of stains, etc.
So you could have a vision system machine score. Front cover 87% defective pixels, page 1 92% defective pixels, etc, etc.
But imagine how long to do that for every page in a book... and you would still have a human factor, because while that system can detect rusted staples, it can't detect detached staples. So a human would still be involved in a structural analysis.
Buy a copy of a book that is pleasing to YOUR eyes and within your budget. That's the best advice I can give. Don't get so hung up on a number.
If I was looking for a low grade copy of a #181, some of the 2.0's Jeff got do look like 3.0's to me, and would be a steal if you could buy them at a 2.0 price.
@@wlnorris75 I’m wondering if AI got to the point where it could grade if we would be ok with it . I would 👍
@@State-uw8pu it would be unbiased and repeatable, so certainly more fair over the long run.
I have experience with some of these types of vision systems, so I know it is technically possible to do much of the grading by machine today.
They can already detect forgeries of paintings or count exactly how many square inches of a car panel has rust on it with modern vision systems, or detect how much color has faded since new, and which areas of a panel have the worst fading.
your 3rd 2.0 grader notes: 'foxing cover, smudge, right center of front cover, wear spine breaks cover, writing top of back cover, heavy creasing to cover'.... I was expecting spine-split or soiled rust pages, detached staples, missing staple... wtf - how did that get a 2.0 with those notes?!
You got multiple copies of Hulk#181 and I can't even afford a low grade copy so I say the hell with trying to get a Hulk#181 and I will just keep buying every key book I can get.
Golden Guru - Those books are all 10’s IMHO
I too am a Compulsive Checker but that is probably because I have been cleaning and pressing and sumitting to CGC for the last year
I remember the submission video. Glad to see them back!
I always try to wait but I usually give in and check my grades. I’m also checking everyday of the status of my submissions probably 5-10 times per day.
I feel like losing a great on the 3.0 to 2.0s, while gaining on the 6.0s to 6.5s and 7.0s is how you'd want that to go, yeah? The $ delta is a greater grade-to-grade on the higher rated stuff.
It was soooo great seeing you in person and watching you auction live with Tyler Kirkham and again with Jae Lee!!!!
No clue about grading in general but have to think the huge increase in submissions with the lack of experienced graders just had to have a negative impact on the final grades…couple that with sending in 21? I heard from several that it almost gives the grader a base line and they use it to grade the others which more often than not delivers lower grades overall…still can’t cry over someone having a house in a box
I'm avidly looking for Mark Jewelers this year and so far have come across a high grade Transformers #46, Amazing Spider-Man # 261, a mid grade Hulk #259 double cover, and a high grade Avengers #253 double insert!!!!!!
I enjoyed this and previous video and know why these were sent together but I personally wouldn't send in a number of same book at same time because I would wonder if graders would be more tempted to do more comparisons of entire group than individual book, squewing grade results.
Well upon my under...😮...whatta shockingly bizarre outcome...🤯💯✔️
Love me some HULK 181s. Awesome that you have a grip of them! When you submit grail books like these (or I guess any books) for grading is the FMV declared the value you think it's worth after it's graded? Because the price could be way different with a raw book vs high grade book especially a high grade grail.
Haha Comic Tom should be the host of a new version of "This Is Your Life"
Can you make a side by side chart of the EXPECTED estimated grades and the ACTUAL final grades of each book?
Love the elektra cover. Ima get my box
Great Covers!
I do not use Telegram - how do I contact you!?
Wow! $$$ Grades! Way to Go Rchie Rich!
Very Nice 👍🏼
Great video. That was a lot of fun. I would love to see the 180's in a video like this.
You can treat foxing with relatively low risk methods. Don't let that hold your books back!
I wood run upon cgc for those 2.0's and two fives
i check my CGC queue every day too lol
ComicTom101!good morning-yeah. sunning shots! 📽
was really looking forward to this episode - ya'll did not disappoint!
did the 2.5 white pager have rust on the staples that translated to the inner pages? That's the only way I think that shouldve got a 2.5 so heavily knocked like that
the Elektra cover is solid fire
Nice score on the 9.2
LOVE this kind of vid! Great stuff
And I can’t wait to hear the notes!
Please show the lower part of the book on the lower graded books, it's harder to gauge the accuracy of the grade otherwise
Be interested in the grading cost for all those books. How many express or walkthru?
Congrats on the 9.2
Will there be a follow-up with analysis of the grader's notes?
Cool video, loved seeing the before and after of this adventure. Along with the final values, I'm definitely curious to know more on the cost of grading for these, and if willing what you paid for the books.
Comic fam that is an excellent Frank Miller cover s
WOW!!! a 9.2 that deserves another WOW!!! That's so awesome Jeff, what did you pay for this copy and when? Congrats on all your the graded books and get them to the finish line.
Awesome show
I am really shocked at those 2.0 and 3.0 grades! I have an ASM #14 graded at 2.5 and definitely in worse condition! I am dying to see the graded notes! Please do an update video. My guess CGC has a stricter grading policy for Bronze Age comics or there must be something eternal within the books! Maybe it was a new grader. Weird.
Some of these CGC grades are difficult to understand. I know there is such a thing as subjectivity but there are also cold, hard facts. Some of those grades simply defy logic. It is still awesome that you had the foresight to accumulate so many copies of what is now an epic book to own.
It's possible that there is staining or water damage that we can't see. If he asked for grading notes they might exist. This is why I have moved to CBCS. Download the QR code and the grading notes are there at no cost.
Awesome reveal. Well worth the wait!
This was fun!
I’ve heard from more than one person that it is a bad idea to submit multiples of the same book in the same order to cgc. Do you feel that might be a factor?
Very entertaining video.. really enjoyed this, thanks!
So frustrating, I feel him. I feel him wanting to say,”WTF”!
Killer video fellas.
I tend to agree with Jeff. Just grading on covers, I agree with all his estimates. If I was being super conservative, maybe a half point lower. But none of those look like full point misses. The only thing I can think of is some interior issues, but on all those 3.0-2.0 misses, it would take something glaring on the inside. I could see the 9.0-8.0 miss being something easier to overlook on the interior.
But I also don't think that 6.0-7.0 gain was a 7.0. I would never have graded it as a 7.0 just based on the cover
Just shows even CGC is subjective. There is no science to grading, only pseudo-science.
I just got back in X-Men 1 from 1963 graded a 2.5. It has a faded cover, date-stamp, tons of creasing and little chunks out of the side cover. Your 2.0's ieave this in the dust. There is no way any of those should have graded that jeff
Watched the last time he was on talking about them, have to comment now cause dam Tom you got me hyped for this video
Even the 1.0 is more Hulk 181 than I own. Sweet stack man!
What a hard core comic book flex ...nice !
Yes check every day
Man the first person I’ve seen pissed about 100k?? I understand to a point! I’m a figure collector
What a great episode! I really felt for the Guru. Will those resubmits be going to CBCS to see how they grade them???
OUCH! Some of those grades hurt my eyes! I like to send only a (2-4) copies of the identical book in hopes of diversifying the odds of getting different grader to prevent the “comparison grading” theory whereby “well let’s see, I graded this one a 2.0 and the next one in the stack is similar”.
Some of the factors to consider -
I know graders get tired eyes,
they’ve had personnel changes and added a lot of new graders who will be getting their stripes soon from Modern teir grading to more advanced levels and may be a bit more conservative to retain their stripes ....on the next level of grading tiers, their training I believe was in last years submissions of copper and modern age with insanely undergraded modern tier books.
Head training grader to “apprentices”: we don’t want to give too many 9.8’s away!
Again, really surprised by many of the lower graded books in your submission.
Expensive Paper!!
Just three years ago I could've bought all the 3.0's out there for $750-$900. Now they're $3000. That's ridiculous.
All prices on key comics is getting ridiculous. I had one BCW box of slabbed books in my collection, that was maybe $10,000 in the total value of my collection the last time I checked. During COVID I decided to revisit the value of some of those books because I was seeing high prices on some books I knew I had. Now just that one BCW book of slabbed books is worth about $100,000. No idea what my entire collection is worth now, or how much of it deserves to be slabbed.
Prices have just skyrocketed. I think I paid like $75 for a CGC 8.0 Marvel Preview #7 (1st Rocket Racoon), and now that is a $700 book. I have $300 in a Hawkman #4 CGC 9.0 (1st Zatanna) and that's at least a $3000+ book now. I traded $400 of $1 bin books for a CGC 8.5 Detective #359 (1st Batgirl). It's like key books have multiplied 10X over 15 years of sitting there.
In 2000 I switched from trying to collect everything, to just collecting first appearances, origins, and deaths. I had about 18,000 books then, and have 28,000 books today. I stopped collecting around 2012, so in that 12 years, I added nearly10,000 1st appearance, origin, and death books.
The movies and TV shows have blown everything up . I don't even know what gems I have in my collection now, because I can't find the time to shift through 28,000 books. 3rd world problems I guess! :)
elektra looks great
I like to check what the grade is as soon as it is graded. Thats what im paying for lol. But still when I finally get ithe grades comic in my hands that is a great experience!
Are these some of those books where CGC will no longer note the defects on the label? 1.8 because of something they might have previously noted?
Wow, I would like to see the graders notes on all of these. I believe they have a Bronze Age grader but I didn’t hear that you paid to have them expedited. Do you think they may have graded more harsh because they came in all at once?
If CGC is going to burn you on some grades, and they always will, better to be burned at the bottom and rewarded at the top, which is what happened here. 2.0s, 2.5s and 3.0s sell for similar amounts, while the differences near the top can be enormous for each point and more than make up for CGC's poor grading at the bottom.
That second 2.0 was way nicer than the first 2.0
I would almost rather have the 8.0 at 40mins than the initial 9.0 with the miswrap! Like.....some grader, somewhere..... has got some wacky ideas on these.
The border on Daredevil is what sells it for me
I missed the live on military orders
I grade screen all mine for 9.8's for cbcs
GAG , my man !
CGC NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT IS ADMISSIBLE IF YOU HAVE SOME PROOF-I WOULD HAVE VIDEO TAPED YOUR GRADING THATS WHAT IM DOING.( THERE IS ORGANIZATIONAL STRIFE )
2 of my favourite people!
Comic tom looks like a guy who screams himself to sleep at night
*pounds
Shout-out to the Golden one
*_You left out how much this submission cost?_*
We have learned two things. 1. GoldenAge can't grade 2. You can't be right and conservative at same time. You can grade or you can't grade.
The only grades you miss are the books you don’t grade.
