That makes so much sense, it's everything British in our sensibilities that were renown for, yet paradoxically causes so much pain ,is not the least bit sensible to our own ethos.
Perfection. The music. The actors. Merchant/Ivory. This is the one movie I've seen more than any other. Dozens of times since its release. I love living the remains of my day knowing that movies as this one, are still out there. The epitome of film making.
I think there are some men who are so tortured inside they can never be happy, never allow themselves to be in love and Mr Stevens is definitely one of them.
Raiken Xion very true. Each and every time I watch this movie with my Dad he is absolutely haunted by Hopkins performance. He truly plays Mr. Stevens to a T, you immediately forget he is acting. He is such an underrated actor! Watching The Remains of The Day always feels crisp and fresh as if I’m watching it for the first time. It is a film that always sticks with you.
Simon Leal Barria just at that point I close my eyes and picture a swan landing in in a lake flying in and hitting the water at 2.52.i wish I was clever enough to make a video of it
Acting , superb. Music that just brings you to another place. I have watched this film many times . and each time I enjoy it more. A true work of magical interpretation that hits you in many ways
How did they come up with the pigeon flying down the chimney into the grate, up to the domed skylight and finally shooed out the large French window back to freedom? Perfection.
I wondered same...I searched plenty of reference but no result..my personal view....maybe some japanese symbol I thought, an image of something that has gone and now too late to grab it, worth just to let it go to its destiny...
@@jakir76 yes , you could view this scene as the entrapment of the british aristocracy of poisonous sensibilities or even how we change I different environments, being free from these constraints of this very house ,.similar to when Hopkins went on his own journey and freed some of his own emotions,? May be I'm over thinking this.
It's sad to learn that this master piece from RR couldn't grab the Academy Award. Sometimes in life, two bests end up in conjunction. Schindler's List soundtrack is also equally soothing to the ears
-Mr Stevens if you are searching for your dustpan, it is outside on the landing -My dustpan? -Your dustpan. You left on the landing -I haven't been using the dustpan -Then it must have been somebody else -I dont follow you -My mistake no doubt, one of many
Only When you can leave all bullshits behind, then you can create a masterpiece like this. Individuality is at its peak. Who cares who wins wars and who cares who lords were. They were only little details around this big hearted but cold character butler. Of course it would be a sin if we don't mention about the novel. This movie's novel author has recently won Nobel for literature. It couldn't be done without the story.
I am confused. The song that starts at around 2:15 - is that part of "A Portrait Returns"? or "Darlington Hall"? or "End Credits (Richard Robbins)"? Someone please help. Thank you so much. My favorite movie music ever.
This should be the transition in between this part "Opening Titles, Darlington Hall - 7:27" of the description. It follows the order of the original soundtrack. This description was written many years ago though, I will fix it at some point.
It's funny that it's called a romantic drama, when it actually is a superbly well written tragedy.
This film shatters my very soul. Oh my Gods. No words can describe it.

Some actors act, others incarnate the hero with their whole existence !!!
2:14 to 3:23 blew my mind....
I know! It still gives me goosebumps every time I hear it!
Best part indeed !!

It's almost like a dark waltz! so beautiful!

Yo la acabo de ver y he hecho lo mismo...
Such a sensation of unease and urgency...still, it arrests my attention every time i hear it.

topnotch performance by Tony Hopkins and Emma Thompson
Anthony. Tony is an American name. He is not American.

Indeed. So true
A feeling of loneliness but loyalty to the end.
Misplaced loyalty
I'd never had made it through the early 90s without this music.
Hahaha. Oh dear😉
Loved the film 🌹Loved the book🌹
One of my favorite pieces of music... unbelievable perfection for the ending of the film. How do they do it? Chills into other worlds...
El director, los actores, el compositor, los escenarios, que mezcla fascinante
Beautiful movie.. now is my favourite, Im really sad they didn't end up together
Stevens fished so next to the net, got it so wrong.Almost comical. But completely accepted it all at the end🌹
@@margalitvanbergen6620 Yes but she didn't, she was sad and probably hoping he will show somthening towards her

2:43 Magic ✨
I was to busy serving I will return in time
I'm afraid that I cannot be of any assistance in any of these matters .
Marvellous
Hannibal Lecter has nothing on the depth and richness of Mr Stevens

I think it’s, Darlington hall
Excellent film and great acting! Though, I have read that the Harold Pinter screenplay of the book was more powerful.
Anybody knows the title of the piece 2:14 to 3:23? The timing given in the description is not correct.

@@TheSamun It's the ending ost.

Qué peliculón.. qué actuaciones .. y esa mordaza, esa timidez, esa corrección, .. sostenidas hasta el final al punto de arruinar las dos vidas..
