Greetings from Russia. That is one of the films that makes such a deep impact on you, you never forget it. Soundtrack is a true masterpiece, cried like a baby.
This movie is a masterpiece. I could watch it a hundred times. The story (especially the ending), the acting, the music. It's so real and yet so poetically written. In little moments you get to understand the metamorphoses of the characters especially Wiesler. What a beauty!!!
I’m from Vietnam, a communist country. Things aint this bad anymore but still. I cried the moment I saw this movie. I’ve never seen such a beautiful thing yet can deliver a strong message like this. I just hope that the ruling people in my country will realize they have a heart and change and do for the people, the Vietnamese people. We, the people, are what make a country, not their dictating communist party.
A very sad yet powerful soundtrack to an incredible movie. Probably the best performance of Ulrich Mühe, giving him international recognition that he really deserved. It is sad that his life ended shortly after - much too soon.
From wikipedia page on Ulrich Mühe: "After German reunification, Mühe allegedly discovered evidence in his Stasi file that he had been under surveillance not only by four of his fellow actors in the East Berlin theatre, but also by his wife Gröllmann. The file held detailed records of meetings that Gröllmann, who was registered as an "Inoffizieller Mitarbeiter" (unofficial collaborator), had with her controller from 1979 to 1989. (SPOILER IF YOU ARE GOING TO WATCH THE FILM) This mirrored the plot of Das Leben der Anderen as in the film, pressure exerted by the Stasi on the playwright's girlfriend makes her betray him as the author of an exposé of covered-up GDR suicide rates. Mühe and Gröllmann divorced in 1990. In a book accompanying the film, Mühe spoke about the sense of betrayal he felt when he found out about his former wife's alleged Stasi role. Mühe's response when asked how he prepared for his role in Das Leben der Anderen was, "I remembered.""

Gewidmet HGW77 in Dankbarkeit
I’m from Poland. This was also our reality ! Masterpiece of films and soundtracks art ! Perfect play of actors transferring you to those grey socialist reality of late 80ties ! One can watch this movie all the time and go throu variety of emotions over and over again 🖤💜💙💚🖤💕
I just watched "The Silent Revolution", original title: Das schweigende Klassenzimmer, about a German school class just before graduating in East Germany in 1956 that is looking at the uprising and fights in Hungary against the Soviet Union and - despite being convinced of socialism somehow - finds itself sympathising with those who are called freedom fighters in the West and fascists or traitors, guided by foreign forces, in the East. The students agree on having a moment of silence in class. This kind of unusual "resistance" is soon seen as being "counter-revolutionary" by the system's representatives in the German 'Democratic' Republic. The class therefore is threatened with not being allowed to graduate at any time at all. The movie is based on true events and not only shows quite well how dictatorships are functioning, how treason and suspicion were encouraged by the state and how there were unjust, arbitrary laws and decisions - it also is an exciting, touching story, presented in a great way. So maybe you can relate to that movie as well, that's why I thought to recommend it to you ;) I did not share such experiences, being born just right after German reunification, after the collapse of the "socialist" systems - and being rooted in western Germany. Nevertheless it is part of our German history as well as of our shared european history. And also part of my family stems from the east, near to today's polish border, from Cottbus. This movie takes place in 1956 - my grandparents, also due to threathening problems with the Stasi for just a random thing, fled East Germany in 1955. Some of their relatives stayed. The separation of families, like depicted in that movie as well, is a common part of German families' history. Sorry, I wrote a lot. However, I am glad you as a person from abroad and being affected yourself also like The Lives of Others. A great movie.
A True Masterpiece indeed. Ulrich Muhe is both the heart n soul of the movie..His acting shows what great performance means. My deep respect for the director.

Im crying right now just listening to this... unbelievable. This movie really touched me in ways no other did. Seing so many people feel it, the movie, gives hope to humans, always.
The beautiful music from a simply wonderful film, one of my all time favorites which won Best Foreign Film in 2006 Academy Awards. About power and abuse of power, and one man's choice to do the right thing in the midst of the ugliness
Magnificent, brooding theme and yet so poignant at the same time. A fantastic film showing the strength of human connection, and a stunning soundtrack.
I keep coming back to this track ever since I first noticed it in the very powerful scene in which - I'll put it this way to avoid spoilers for those who haven't seen the film yet - the actress makes a very radical decision after she thought her actions were irreversible. I was deeply affected by this turn of events and the way HGW XX/7 and the writer react to it... This track beautifully supports this moment and makes it so much more intense and sorrowful.

I believe that anything you feel has profoundly impacted you, has done so, because you have had the capability to empathize. You know, that if you were in shoes of Ulrich Muhe, you may have done what he did. And the thought of that capability of sacrificing and the darkness in its aftermath that you may need to face, shudders you. Instead, it happened on a silver screen, so it wins our heart and at the same time, we don't have to exhibit the pain ourself. We like this video, because it represents us. And if we disliked it, it's also because of that.
