It all adds up to “suspension of disbelief”, also one of first uses of the steadi-cam in the subway tube/chase scene and escalator.

Also, check out Beware the Moon remembering An American Werewolf in London by Latin Joy with first hand interviews with John Landis, Rick Baker, David Naughton, Griffin Dunne, Jenny Agutter!! Rick Bakers credits to Star Wars and the Cantina scene. Yes, Baker was the first to win an Oscar for special effects on American Werewolf in London!!

Gotta respectfully disagree Belushi in that role woulda been even better if done seriously and not tongue in cheek. Story telling without dialogue you know the dudes friend is the comedic relief bc it’d be belushi not the character he’s portraying that the audience sees ultimately. So casting Belushi woulda overshadowed the lead w/out a doubt and made the film/play completely different though. The innate sympathy from the audience would be there at least bc Belushi’s career and filmography was so prevalent at that time period specifically. So the actors inclusion would be a true double edged sword.
