  • ►Replacing your BMW control arms and tie rods is standard maintenance. They're an integral part of the front suspension and see plenty of road abuse because of that. Like most suspension parts, they have a roughly defined service life that should be followed for maximum performance and comfort.
Within the arms and tie rods are articulating joints that turn the wheels and control articulation. Over time and thousands of miles of use, those joints, whether bushings or ball joints, will wear out. When ball joints and bushings wear out, they introduce play into the suspension and steering. You'll be able to hear and feel the degradation as the steering becomes vague and the bushings begin to clunk. Control arm and tie rod replacement may be necessary after as little as 60,000 miles, but many make it beyond that with relatively healthy parts.
In this video, Mike Hidalgo, FCP Euro's Professional DIY'er, replaces the control arms and tie rods on a BMW E83 X3.

That ball joint you hit with the air hammer… My E53 had to have both front steering knuckles removed and some serious surgery to get them out along with the snapped bolts.

What ever happened to the long haul mk7 project with Nate? You guys should reboot it and turn that sucker into a dedicated track car now that the mk7 platform is older
