Mme Lewek started as a mezzo but she managed to keep the chest connection while transforming in coloratura soprano and due to it she has very reach, full bodied sound through the whole range even in the most high extremes and good emission's support. All modern coloraturas have thin head voices with terrible high notes. So it's a pleasure to have such singer as Kathryn Lewek. She is almost 40 yo now and I'm hope she will extend her working repertoire. She deserves her current success and even more.
The head voice is the most important part of the voice . The chest gives us power and richness but the head voice gives us freedom and brilliance. Without it as we age and lose the head voice our sound becomes thick dead and short in range. Read any belcanto book and learn of the importance of head voice. Saying "ALL " modern coloraturas have a thin voice is a vague generalization and is being subjective. You have to hear the voices live in an auditorium to really tell. Recordings are always deceptive. When I heard Barbara Bonney live her voice sounded TOTALLY different than on recordings which made her sound thin. And when I heard Anna Moffo live she had a much more pinging soprano sound than in her records.
@@jimbuxton2187 First of all, Moffo is not a modern soprano and I never judge singers unless I've heard them. For example I don't know how Moffo sounded in person so as you can see I don't judge her. Secondly head voice is the main part of soprano voice, it's a physical law, I don't even see the need to mention it. But resonance, depth, and singing over the orchestra are only possible with the correct use of support, i.e. the chest voice. First of all, one need to understand what it is. It is not singing by the chest, it is the use of all resonators. Modern sopranos and most mezzos limit themselves to the head voice, that's the problem in singing technique, that's what I mean. That's why their singing is thin, colorless, without volume and singing over the orchestra, you can hardly hear them.
The best queen of the night I have ever seen! I saw her performance yesterday at MET and absolutely loved her voice, mood, character--everything was perfect.
the overacting is fun tho! also when performing on stage overacting is closer to normal acting bc normal acting doesnt translate very well at distance. i do agree it was a wonderful performance tho
The costumes are spectacular. A brand new interpretation - so often the Queen of the Night appears in a stylised tiara, reminiscent of Billie Burke in TWoO.
@@jjh2456 that's it. She isn't afraid of the high notes. Most singers starting the aria with thinking "I hope to get the high notes". She is enjoying the hole aria including the high notes. The first Aria is a bit better than the second. You have to listen the audio on her website. It's outstanding!
sounds like a big terz deeper. Its not F Dur major even, but a dirty Cis/ D. Kammerton 390 hz?! The highest subg note is a C( Do6) instead Fa6 on my Bechstein Piano in 440 hz.
It had the right shape, but not the right tessitura. I really don't have a great ear for pitch but I reckon even Florence Foster Jenkins got higher than that (not necessarily in the right places, of course). Edit: here's Florence ... ua-cam.com/video/V6ubiUIxbWE/v-deo.htmlsi=nBRmu1iaOwsUZmdO Edit2: perhaps it's just that she still sounds like a mezzo, despite the top notes? No idea, tbh, but it just doesn't sound quite right. On the other hand: if the audience liked it, who are we to complain?
Lewek is magnificent, but could the Met please give her something else to sing? I'd love to hear her in one of the bel canto roles or as all four ladies in Les Contes d'Hoffmann.
Indeed. "Hell's vengeance is boiling in my heart Death and desperation are flaming around me If Sarastro doesn't experience lethal pain at your hand You will be my daughter nevermore. Be disowned forever! Be abandoned forever! Shattered be forever all bonds of nature ... Disowned! Abandoned! Shattered all bonds of nature! If not, through you, Sarastro will turn pale! Hear! Hear! Hear, Gods of vengeance! Hear a mother's pledge/curse!" Exact translation is somewhat difficult, Schwur rather means solennel promise = oath, and zertrümmern rather means to crush ... but okay, you have to put it somehow. Well, not sure if this was asked for ... Enjoy the aria!
She's Kathryn Lewek. She's incredible. I love this, her version of this aria. On the podcast Aria Code, the episode with the Queen of the Night aria, is Kathryn Lewek's performance at the Met Opera.
Right now she is the Queen of the Night of the moment. She is engaged to sing the role in a number of opera houses as well as being the Met’s go to for this role.
www.metopera.org/season/2022-23-season/die-zauberflote/ she's still singing the Queen of the Night , although the production has changed so the costumes and staging will be different
Are these pictures from the production at the MET? The costumes are somewhat awkward, and she has a perceptible light English accent, but a quite clear pronunciation, and her rendition of the aria is marvellous!
Дурацкие декорации. Лучше не смотреть, а просто слушать! Голос- то прекрасный! Безумное выражение лица и жуткий макияж Царицы Ночи … Моцарт сильно удивился бы,и долго ржал над своими потомками😂
What an opera audience cheers about today would have been booed or ignored 30 years ago. Opera singing is increasingly falling into the hands of undemanding audiences who have no idea how what they frenetically celebrate should sound. The staccati are completely washed out, the voice is restless with a strong tremolo and not dramatic enough - not a good example of a successful interpretation.
As of the end of the 2022-23 season she has sung this role 53 times at the MET, which is insane! Truly the best Queen of our time.
Agreed. There was pandemonium at the Met at the conclusion of her aria in May, 2023. No other soprano comes close.
Yes, there was!!!!!!!!!! She IS ungodly. She OWNS it! No other "soprano" comes close, period!!
better than the young Damrau ?
@@MaestroWenartoNever! Damrau is the best❤
Awesome costume and make-up. It is a fresh change from the Queen's that take after a Disney villian.

Wow, that explains the low notes. I was surprised at the richness of the low notes. Okay, I am convinced, GOING TO THE MET TONIGHT!!!!!!! 🙂

Holy crap that was good, i loved it! Thanks for posting!

Omg I'm loving this. Set design is stunning the queens outfit is on point. The singing is on point what more can I say
Great voice. Sounds nice - no shrieking, yelling and over acting like many do.

Finally a singer with chest support again
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES!!!!!! Can we PLEASE get Ms. Lewek into some other fiery Mozartian roles? She's so...🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I must see this opera one day
Amazing! She makes it look easy, although everyone knows it's nearly impossible.
She does not look even out of breath. How is that possible?
I saw her in this role in 2013 at the Nashville Opera! She was spectacular! She is so nice and genuine as well! Wonderful artist!
And that is how it’s done.
Stunning. Best since Diana Damrau.
Yes. Thank you for qualifying it. Lewek is excellent but just shy of Damrau.
I agree with you. Damrau is a cut above.@@phirephly4588

I think I preferred Lewek in the French opera while she sings in a wheelchair as an old lady. She was creepy and majestic. I loved her performance.
