Today, since the spot value of gold has gone up the bar is worth $52,500 based on its weight. This was very satisfying to watch. I used to work at a pawn shop for a very greedy person. He values money over everything, including his family. Seeing that gold bar being basically destroyed would probably give him a stroke. I could care less about gold apart from it's historic side and practical properties such as electronics. As an aircraft technician, things like titanium, magnesium and tungsten impress me far more. Cheers.

For those who are wandering i got the idea off of season 6 of pawn stars, when they bought like $111,000 of silver form someone. Then they turned them into " in the old man we trust coins" and then sold them for 50 a piece.

The natural model of reality in your head tells you that things range between weighing somewhere between twigs and rocks (so like 0.5 to 3 grams/cm^3 density). Gold has a density of >19 g/cm^3, so it feels waaaaay heavier just because it looks like it should be light. At most you expect it to weigh like steel or whatever, but steel's actually 3 times lighter.

Similarly, if you go to pick up a bar of gold with the subconscious expectation that "it's a metal, it'll be about the same as steel" or whatever, it will feel heavy.
