Just purchased the new 1140 8k model. Cannot wait! Thanks for your review. I do hope the previous 8k version and the latest version have the same or better bench mark numbers posted here.
Hey Gene, Im a big fan of these bench test reviews! Keep ‘‘em coming!! I recently purchased an Anthem Avm 70 paired with an ATI 2005 amp. I hope you can get your hands on one to bench test. You provide an awesome service to the home theater community and I personally thank you for what you do! Great video!!
Just got my MRX740 just over a month ago, and have been VERY HAPPY with the results of it's performance and ARC. It is also powering Arendal 1723 S Bookshelves and Center Channel for my front sound stage. Been an amazing combo to say the least. My listening levels barely hit 80dB peaks as my MLP is 10ft away, and so far have had plenty of power to handle these monsters.
My MRX740 music/theater 5.2.4 config as follows... MCA525 powering: - heresy 4 mains - focal aria center - ML Axis surround 740 AB channels (height) - Definitive tech 6.5 Str bipole, bridged - Definitive tech 4.5 SVS SB3000 sub x2 Once everything warmed up, amazing to me. It was important to push the focal for a bit to reduce it's localization of the dialog (beneath protector screen) -- now it seems to come more from the screen (we sit only 6 ft away). This setup fills our vaulted living room with rear balcony - not ideal for acoustics but this config overcomes. Play movies 25-40pct volume with great impact. I only fiddle with the web interface...have yet to try Arc. Only complaint is there is a perceptible delay in the audio with Dolby playback. Some movies worse than others...I haven't confirmed if this varies for the same movie, over different playbacks. I am exclusively streaming with Chromecast Google tv - I imagine DVD would negate this. But I also wonder if the AVR70 would also process quicker and make this a non issue as well.
Quite a mix of timbre with the mixed brands esp. LCR not cause an issue? Heresy must sound quite diff from a Focal no? I always mixed but now finally all same brand and drivers but very reflective room but i have dislike of panels and traps.
@@Selene_M3 thanks for the reply. This is my first build, and I have no one else system to compare with so it's hard for me to speak to timbre. Other than the fact it doesn't come to mind when watching. For music, now that everything's broken in I stick to 2.2 which anyone can agree sounds great with these Klipsch. Surrounds, went with MLs for their low impedance. I wanted to ensure they drew from the amp and were impactful. The focal actually measures 4.5 ohm which was curious and welcomed. The dispersion is good, which I needed given our close viewing. Thinking about it, it def has a different timbre than the heritage mains. But it's not like the heresy's are handling dialog also, they serve different functions in movies so it doesn't bother me. Besides, is there an available center that matches the heritage line? Went with definitive tech for Atmos because their tweeters offer a steep adjustment angle, which I needed because they are high up on my walls instead of the ceiling due to the particulars of our open concept. Maybe some people are fortunate enough to go solo with a brand but I was forced to get creative. At any rate, highly subjective but was hoping to give people some sense of power output. Which I wanted to hear about when I was planning my own.
that’s quite a first set-up for sure, especially your amps and heresy speakers. Moving forward I would try and match speaker brands or perhaps just one more heresy for the center.
Hey Gene! An avid follower and subscriber to audioholics . A big fan . Thanks for all the great reviews, topics and discussions. I currently have a 740 mated with an MCA 525 Gen 2 and paired with Paradigm Studio Reference Speakers which I’ve had since 2005. (I felt they just got better overtime ). The 525’s powering up the fronts, center and surrounds and I’ve assigned the receivers front speaker amplifiers to power up a pair of in ceiling height speakers. I’ve had Denon, Marantz , Yamaha , Onkyo , Integra and B&K in the past (some of them THX ultra 2 certified even) and not until I’ve had an MRX 700 with the old ARC calibration (plus some carefully pl and acoustic treatments ) that I started realizing my speakers and rooms full potential . It sounded amazing even without calibration but ARC takes it to a whole new level. Ever since, I’ve been a die hard Anthem fan. Replacing it with the 720’s and now with the 740’s . ( I would’ve gotten the AVM 70 but because of availability issue, I settled for the 740’s , which was not really settling ). The receiver used as a pre amp plus ARC genesis is just truly amazing. But with the MCA 525, the dynamics on the speakers just went up about 200% (or more :)). It’s beastly , as some would put it , but very refined at the same time . No system or room is perfect but with Anthem, I found the system and sound that’s perfect for me. (Although every person I’ve demoed my room to are very impressed and have converted to Anthem themselves ). Plus, it sounds amazing in 2 channel and immersive music audio as well .
Being as you have the 740 and not the 1140, do you feel you're missing anything without the dual independent subwoofer outs? I'm wondering what is the benefit of this feature and if it is a must have if there are dual subs.
I upgraded from the original Anthem MRX300 to a MRX740 a few weeks ago, and it is amazing. The most mind-blowing difference that I did not expect was the MRX740 makes my Paradigm Monitor 9’s sound like they have subwoofer-level base. I’ve actually had to check multiple times to tell whether or not my JL Audio e112 is on since it’s actually hard to tell, as I would have never thought a pair of floorstanders with 2 5.5 inch drivers could have seat-shaking bass.
A heart filled thank you from Canada 🇨🇦 eh! Thank you for doing an amazing UNPAID service for us shmucks! Far too many people in the comments treat your videos and hard work like it’s owed to them. Thank you so much for all the hard work you and the other Audioholics crew do! Also, I think the pinned comment has an error in it I believe. It should read 5 amplified speakers at 140w, not the stated 6. You’re stating 12 powered channels.
I have the MRX 740 and right now use it my only receiver but in the future I will be buying a Anthem 3 channel at 225 w per channel for my home theatre, glad too know the pre amp is done right …….. thanks for doing a test review and all your hard work.
Thank you for the review. I've been running my MRX740 through an MCA325 3 channel amp in a 5.2.2 speaker set up featuring Paradigm Prestige series 55C center and 95F towers and think it sounds incredible. I'm looking forward to your Anthem ARC video to make sure I've done my room corrections...well correctly. Thanks again and keep the videos coming.
I've had my 1140 since they were released. It's crazy good. The only issue I have is that ARC seems to overdrive certain frequencies or something in some music. There are a handful of songs where it causes a static sound on some notes. And yes, I'm correcting the full range.
Personally I think what’s more important is whether an amp will crap itself after just a couple of years. I’m up to my 4th AV amp now. Fortunately my Denon is serving me very well.
I went with an MRX 740 and an Emotiva BasX A4 to power four height speakers. An 1140 would have been a more convenient solution but at least when the 740 bites the dust or becomes obsolete I still have a power amp I can use on the next system. The other hangup I had on the 740 was it didn't have independent sub pre-outs. I ended up buying two Martin Logan 10" sealed subs with Anthem ARC built right in to the sub so I am assuming I'm not missing out on much. For my small living room this is a killer system. I don't think I'll ever want more than 11 channels of processing anyway.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom and enthusiasm! I take your opinion to heart. Building my first, and last, theater based on many of your recommendations (Arendal/ monolith Amps/ Anthem AVM 70/ monoprice speaker wire/ blue Jean, etc…)
I was interested in buying the Denon 4700 and using it as pre amp as it has excellent pre amp measurements, uses same DAC as the anthems and is much cheaper. Hope the sound quality is close to equal specially for movies.
Great review as always Gene. I am a long time Denon owner and switched recently to an Anthem 1140 for a 9.2.6 setup. I’m using an Emotiva XPA3 amp for the mains and a another pair of Emotiva BASX amps for surrounds. I have to say I’m really impressed with this AVR. As you mention it runs very cool but I’m just really happy with ARC/Genesis. It could be placebo, bit I feel like my whole system is much more immersive versus the Denon and Audyssey XT32. Zero glitches over the last 3 months, it just works very well for me on the latest firmware. Definitely a fan.
I just ordered an 1140 and it looks like I will have almost the exact set up you have. I have a question I hope you can answer. I read several reports that Anthem has issues at times turning on/off and controlling volume when using an Apple TV remote via CEC connection. My current set up is Apple TV to Marantz to LG OLED with control issues and don’t want to take a step backwards from the simplicity for our everyday routine of watching TV. Any light you can shed on this would be greatly appreciated.
Gene, a new ARC Genesis Beta firmware v1.6.1 with auto-phase correction has just being released by Anthem. Will love to see a full review from you. Cheers!~
I've played with the new beta extensively for the past 3 days and it brings my system to the next level. No hyperbole here. The auto phase calibration for multiple subwoofers really worked. This is the time when independent subwoofer channels will truly benefit from such a feature. For this MRX740 users, you will be missing out.
I abolutely agree. The new ARG 1.61. kills and really shows what you are always preaching, why it is necessary to have two independent subwoofer outputs if you have two subs!
I very recently replaced my Yamaha RX-A1050 with an MRX-740 (just being used as a processor) and MCA-525 Gen. 2 and it's been a revelation. I've never really heard a lot of systems for comparison, but during movies and definitely compared to before, the imaging is astounding - even with just 5.1. Pair it with a good sound mix from a newer film and it's quite a treat. The fan in the MRX is not ideal, especially considering I'm not even using the internal amp, but it's not a big deal and both it and the MCA barely get warm even being tucked in a tight little cabinet with almost no airflow. The software seems pretty stable, which is nice - I love the input customization it allows, and the build quality on the amp is just outstanding. I don't need it, but I'm so curious to know if the AVM (70 or 90) could possibly sound any better. I imagine the answer is probably 'no.'
Great video as always. I love my anthem. It was a bit difficult to learn to use at first, going through the website interface was awkward to learn the set up initially. But now I really like it.
Hi Gene, Thanks for time you put in taking these measurements, they truly are so valuable. I'm currently in the market for an Anthem mult-channel amp. They sound very musical. I'm hope Anthem adds Auto 3d to the mix someday.
We love the MRX 1140 internal amps for effects And MCA 3ch power for LCR Clarity and Big power where it’s required most. Love the tweaks made after the bench test feedback legendary progress. thanks Gene
Good work Gene! I ordered a MRX 740 8K yesterday. After 20-some years of having the Sony DA4ES, in my main system, I'm looking forward to having a more modern unit in my main system. The Sony (still working great) will move into my basement system. What remains to be seen....I have a Hegel h390 that ideally will drive my L/R channels, via HT bypass...not sure yet how well the MRX 740 center channel amp will blend in.
Very comprehensive, lots of work!❤️ Thanks Gene. Have AVM60, starting to show it's age. These look to good replacement for previous Anthem products. Appreciate the willingness to make changes to get it better. Still waiting for the ARC Android app, how odd that the downloads pages still points to something that doesn't exist!😩
Well done, thanks for confirming what I suspected, just got MRX 740 and just ordered a Anthem MCA 325 Gen 2. Can’t wait to see your complete video on the ARC Genesis. Love your reviews, just ordered a pair of paradigm premiere 800 F after seeing your review
I recently purchased an Anthem AVM-70. My amps are a Classe CA-2300 and a Proceed AMP-5 (125 W / 5 channel) connected to B&W 802D, HTM2D and SCM1's for side/rear and a Velodyne HGS 15. My old Lexicon MC-8B failed (power supply again) and I figured it was time to get something new. I really like the auto calibration process. I'm still trying to fully understand all the details. But I have it set using full calibration for movies/TV and only levels calibration (taken from the auto-calibration) for music. I would love to see an instructional video explaining the gory details behind calibration.
Bought an MRX 740 which was an upgrade from an older ARCAM, and now powering a 5.1 setup. Very happy with the clarity but now need to upgrade my front left and right speakers. Really appreciated your thorough analysis and I look forward to the Arc Genesis review. I’m using it but the first attempt was pretty problematic. I plan to recalibrate after your video posts.
I love my Anthem MRX-740. I was a Denon guy for a long time but…… Anthem is definitely a turn key solution. I love that it’s a set price and don’t have to pay for software on something I already own. No disrespect Denon ✊. Plus they are 5 channels driven not 2 channels like most receivers. 🤙 Keep crushing Gene! Love Audioholics content!
GREAT REVIEW. I have the 1140 and run all 7.6 channels with separate amps. Tubes for the fronts, SS for the subs and rears. I picked the ANTHEM for it's great preamp outputs and it's great ATMOS processing. The height channels [ 6 ] --- I use the ANTHEM. My last AVR ??? Maybe ? cheers.
I moved from a Denon to the 740 about 9 months ago. Best decision ever. The sound clarity, power and customizable things you can do are worth every penny. I drive my main 5 with the Anthem and have an Outlaw Audio for the 4 height. Works perfect. Only reason I didn't go with the 1140 is because I didn't think the extra cost was worth it to have individual sub outputs as I am only running 1 sub now.
@@rayking507 I had the X6200W. I ran it by itself for a while then got the Outlaw to power the main 5 and the Denon to do the height 4. I think the Anthem puts out as much as much power as the Outlaw, but just seems a little cleaner as I did swap the channels all around to see which one did better. I don't crank my system very high though as I care about clarity.
@@MurTEL Ok, I would of thought using external amp for the main channels would of improved on sound quality more than using its internal amps as the AV can free it self to do better processing. One you tuber used cheap Emotiva Basx A5 on his Anthem 1140 for 5 main channels and he said it improved everything to do with sound quality on his Anthem.
Yes please on AB for H1&H2 amplification, love my MRX 1140 that is only thing I wish they change (hopefully via software) as mine only drives H1&H2 and Zone 2 bathroom. H3 rears don’t get much action so opposite of what I want it to drive out of the amp. My 7 ch is Monolith 7x and it’s clean to my Persona 3Fs and Persona Center and some in-ceiling Paradigm 8” Elite
Hi Gene thanks for the test results. I currently own the 1120 with an emotiva XPA 7 & using receiver to run rear surround. I’m thinking of going to 1140 or avm70 which I’d have to get another amp. I contacted anthem about sound quality difference & they said the avm70 has 11v on preout while the receiver has 5v. Is that something I will really notice the difference? 1140 or avm70? Hopefully you get an avm70 to test as well.
I really hope that bi amping issue is resolved through an update? Thank you for that information I didn't realize that I was doing it wrong this whole time. Now I will go back to two channels with jumpers but I'm hopeful this issue can get resolved and run class AB bi amp for fronts
Just purchased the new 1140 8k model. Cannot wait for this bad boy too arrive and get setup. I do hope the previous 8k version compared to the latest version has the same or better bench mark numbers posted here. Any chance of getting these 8k versions benchmarked in the near future? Thanks for all you do!!!
Great review Gene! Are these brand new chassis? I read that they recently had to switch from AKM to ESS DAC's so I'd be curious which revision you got.
@@SnowBob302 I sent this queestion directly to Anthem, I owned the 740 right after launch, Minve say Harware Version 2. Here is what Anthem had to say: The DAC models which we are using are AKM AK4458VN in MRX 540/740/1140 and AVM 70 except for AVM 90. If there are some DAC changes in the future we are not previewing at this time.
@@jasonc331 was that a recent answer? I thought the AVM70 had a different DAC at launch compared to the MRX series and then the AVM 90 had yet another one. I may be remembering incorrectly though. In the software, mine also is listed as hardware version 2 and in Gene’s walkthrough of the software his shows 2 as well. In that sense I took it as evidence that it’s the same DACs but I wish there was a clear confirmation. The support staff can be hit or miss on that kind of knowledge but I appreciate you sharing that.
@@SnowBob302 the datasheets I have from late 2020 show the MRX series all use the AK4458VN while the the AVM 70 uses the AK4490EQ and the AVM 90 was going to use the AK4499EQ. Speculation has been the delay on the AVM 90 has been the need to rework the code to work with an ESS DAC.
@@kujoomd2863 thanks for clarifying that. I think that somewhat discredits the Anthem support response if they’re saying the entire MRX series and the AVM 70 is using the same ALM DAC.
Hey Gene, great video as usual. It's clear anthem's pre-amp output is excellent. How do they compare with marantz and denon pre-outs? Also, like the latest generation of denon and marantz AV receivers, does anthem completely cut off internal amplification when we use all channel pre-outs?
They both work. ie. you could use the Anthem LR amps for a set of front height speakers [ mounted on the front wall .] and use the FR preamp outs to drive separate power amps. The high -- 5 volt preamp output lets you get around the room.
Thanks for the review Gene. I am really happy with my MRX 740 which I have had for over a year now. Looking forward to your ARC Geneses results along with some tips on setting up various configurations ie stereo, 5.1 and 5.1.2. My setup is a 5.1.2 using Definitive Tech speakers and a Martin Logan Dynamo 1100X sub. My room is less than Ideal so I simply did a standard auto calibration nothing fancy. Looking to tweak the calibration at some point as well as setting up a stereo listening mode.
Again, I know this is a late comment. Just saw the video. I have an 1120 and I am using a balanced audio technologies 300 Y per channel amplifier for the left and the right channels and then I’m using the anthem for the rest of the channels. great device. I have a separate two channel listening system so I don’t use the anthem for critical to channel listening.
Thanks for the Anthem tests. Looking for a new 9-amplified-channel AVR with HDMI 2.1. Any word on when the final review of the Yamaha Aventage RX-A6A will be out? Thanks! Edit: Decided to add two more height channels, so need to choose between Yamaha RX-A8A and more expensive Anthem MRX 1140, or something else (that doesn't run hot). Room correction system also important.
Great review! Thank you for all the effort and information. I would like to see something on the MRX540 too. Does it send 5v RMS from the pre-outs like the740 & 1140 do? Also, it seems that Anthem isn't allowing the 540 to re-assign the front L/R channels. This is a downer for us 2-channel stereo folks who want to expand an Anthem STR Integrated setup into a smaller yet "Best of both worlds" awesome system! Maybe a little nudge from Audioholics to do a firmware upgrade would help us little guys out (just sayin'). Either way, thanks again for all you do. Appreciate ya!
Thanks for the great review! I backordered a 740 about a month ago to replace my Yamaha rx-v685 and this helps reaffirm my decision. I'm planning to use some basX amplifiers for the 7 bed layer speakers so having great pre-outs is perfect. After seeing this review I continue to question why would anyone want to pay significantly more for the AVM70 if the MRX has such clean pre-outs? Are the dacs really noticeably better with the pre/pro?
Hi Gene We're running the MRX 740 with an MCA 225 Gen 2 amp to power a two channel with the Founder 80F. Center is the FS 70CLR. I've been extremely please with quality of sound produced. Would have added a photo, but that feature doesn't seem to be available.
Any idea how the 540 5.1 receiver performs? How are the pre-outs? I'm just looking for a good, affordable processor, would the Denon 3700 be a better choice if I don't need the amp channels?
Hi love the video, i tried to purchase the 740 but they are sold out in the states, and they are going to start shipping them with the 8k upgrade built in but without a eta or price. With that being said i was offered a 1140 for a good price. What would your recommend?
Was the Class D hissing eliminated with the band limiting? .. How was the internal fan noise/behaviour? - I asking to see where these units are now compared to one I had shortly after launch.
thanks Gene for the avr reviews. im looking to upgrade my avr at some point.i have the top YAMAHA separates . had them for a couple of years now.i just dont feel that theres a big enough gap in technology at present to jump ship. so i watch with keen intrest. cheers
Hi. Thanks for any help you can give me. If I just want an amp that will run a solid 5.2.4 set up with no extra hassle. Am I better going for the Marantz sr8015???🙏👍😊
Me, I want the 8K and atmos on 5.1.2, so selected the 740. Could have got the 540 and used pre-outs into my existing 310. Still have the 310 because it has AM/FM and an actual turntable phono input. Moneywise for accomplishing ATMOS, Sept of 2024, a Sony Quad or AZ5000ES is CDN$3000. So, get a 740 for $700 more and get more functionality/performance with the same atmos staging ability.
Hey Gene (@audioholics), fellow SR8015 owner here. I compared this bench test to the Marantz SR8015. Would you say the MRX1140 and SR8015 to be somewhat similar? I do agree my Marantz does run on the warmer side. But it has not hesitated to punch out the sound at all. This Anthem also appears to be pretty geared to pushing that same sound out.
yep got the old anthem mrx 700 and i love it. i want atmos but im just not really happy with the selection of movies with great atmos. the 740 looks great. i wonder if ill miss the toroid on the 700 if i went with the 740. i can honestly say ive never really heard any distortion out of my receiver dont plan on starting now
Hi Gene, new to your videos as only now I'm prepping for major upgrade to my Home Theater system. I'm deciding between Anthem MRX740 vs Marantz SR8015. I've attempted to combine high end stereo in same room as surround theater. I use Jadis pre and power amps for L and R mains, which are VonSchweikerts, and I use a dedicated modified/strapped tube for center channel speaker - so I wouldn't be using the receiver amps for those, only receiver line outs. I have also been utilizing a 4-channel power amp for SIDE center and rear surrounds - I would think to save that amp to possibly power 4 Atmos speakers if that seems feasible. The Marantz ST8015 has component out (and Anthem does not), and this feature has advantage for me as I have 3 rooms being fed by a component distribution because of old but good monitors that happen to be component. Sorry if this is all TMI, but based on all this this, which receiver would you choose? m concerned with your comment about the heat of the Marantz, and wonder if a channel is only being used for line out, is there still heat generated by the amp from that channel? Thanks for reading this - a reply would make a big difference to me as I know you've experienced both of these AV receivers and you are an authority. And thanks for your great quality videos.
Thanks for the through job on measuring both of these. I’m sure it took a lot of time and planning to collect the data and get it plotted. I also appreciate the video discussion to accompany the written article to explain the measurements. We’re you able to confirm with Anthem that the same AKM DACs are being used in your hardware as in the initial launch batch before the factory fire? There’s nothing I can do but is there any way to know whether your measurements are applicable to my launch version from ~Dec 2020? If all the hardware is the same, then it would turn out to be a good investment for me with the 740. I live in apartments so I can’t crank the sound too much but if I ever move into a space where I could, I would go with that route of getting a separate amplifier to pair with the 740. I don’t ever see myself being in a space where I could go beyond 7.2.4.
Gene, excellent and insightful as usual. I am torn between the 540 and 740, I will only be putting together a 5.2, possibly 5.2.2 system in a smallish European size living room and only using the receiver as a processor. Would there be a difference between the 540 and 740 based solely on processing quality? Can the amplifier section be turned off completely like I believe Marantz allows?
Anthem completely improved my home theater when I switched from a stand alone Marantz receiver to an Anthem MRX 520 (I’m just 5.2) along with an Anthem MCA 20. This drives Piega P10 fronts and NHT powered sub along w my surround speakers. What a difference! Anthem ARC Genesis is the best I’ve used.
Hi! Have a question! Love the mids and hi-s of kef and q accoustic and lo-s of polk....so how about bi amping kef and q accoustic , then with pre amp out powering polks and then using all of them as an array for front channels??? Any work around to make this work good???
Well done again but I've been a little mixed up with the two graphs regarding the changes on the slopes of the LPF and HPF. I think that they were inverted. On the second graph it's the slope of the HPF that was modified and the slope of the LPF seems unchanged!!!
as long as a person likes the way a unit sounds ..thats all that matters...a lot of the test results you cant even hear eg some units measure better on their pre outs than some pre pros it doesnt mean it sounds better it just measured better ..so then it all comes down to personal choice of which brand you like based on your preceived conception of that device which was arrived by the marketing department that took years to develope and to convince people to buy their products and so on ..word of mouth eg...if it looks good on paper must be good...bottom line is what does it sound like to you...yes I have used specs to make my decisions when coming to buy equipment...eg.. 2 years ago I was looking for a amp to do the front 3 channels or 5...I had a price set for this unit and after my research and reading reviews and you tube and everything I could find and came up with the Anthem MCA 325 ...good on paper...well built and quality...so i bought it ...like a lot of people we dont have the option of hearing this stuff anymore ,,and we use our blind faith to buy it on line...well the Anthem did a good job up front in my system and music was better but it wasnt leaps and bounds better than the 2 mono blocks from Emotiva that I was using to do the front 2...fast forward 2 years later I am thinking of a pre pro ...so I will need extra external power...not to impressed with Anthem but it was doing the job...and I figure i will only need something to do the 4 height channels and the 2 surround back...so nothing fancy needed to do these channels..make a long story short I went with ToneWinner 7300 a 7 channel amp a little more power and the specs dony look as good as the Anthem...so i figure i will use it to do front 3 and top 4 speakers and if it sounds as good as the Anthem or better it will stay doing that..if not then the 4 up top and the 2 at back... Well let me tell you the ToneWinner right off the bat sounded better when listening to 2 channel music and I am using the OPPO 205 and Linn Majik 140 up front...so for the first time i am hearing the OPPO 205 and The Linns in a new and completly new way a good way ...like my old record playing days with a Ortophon MC 20 moving coil cartridge way...great sound stage and big and way better separation ...so the movies sound about the same and maybe a tad better and clearer up front with separation all around...So that was my experience with specs ...now some units might sound bad and the specs show that...and maybe some dont...It worked out for me with the ToneWinner.
Sorry if this question was directly addressed--with the 740: Could a couple of the class D amplified channels be reassigned as a separate 2 channel via the pre-amp outputs to a separate stereo amplifier and then have a nice 5.1 AND separate 2.0 stereo output? Would that still get an analog to digital conversion?
Hi Gene. Any idea when you’ll be doing you next batch of vids on the anthem products? Specifically on your calibration results and tips. Keep up the great work!
Any recent owners having issues with fan noise? I'm hesitant to purchase since I'm reading a lot of people having problems with loud intermittent fan noise in reviews
Any idea how close the performance of the 540 is to its bigger brothers? I hope close because I just bought one lol. I don't need the extra channels and extra 40W the larger models offer.
Hi Gene, Great video, appreciate all the measurements you review with your listeners. I’ve read some reviews about the MRX 740 and some people complained about the loud fan noise. Did you notice a loud fan with your unit? Thanks
Very nice review. Thanks for that! Do you know whether the pre-amp section and processing section of the 540 is exactly the same. I have a 5.1 setting and a Rotel RMB-1075 5 channel amplifier. Thus, the 540 would be good enough for my setting. i.e. when there are no other drawbacks compared to the 740 and 1140.
Thank you for a great informative review. As I use powered front speakers (kef LS50). Would the higher voltage of the pre outs provide benefits for not turning volume so high during calibration ? Or does it represent a risk of clipping speakers. Many thanks!
Gene , Did you get a chance to near how loud the internal fan was during the test ... Many comments stating that they are quite loud when required ... You're thoughts and findings would be great ... Kind Regards
I heard the fan kick on when testing thr Class D amp but it wasn't too loud. My AP has its own fan noise so I will pay closer attention when it's installed.
@@willpower6651 Audio Advice and Crutchfield are authorized resellers. They were both out of stock for me when I was searching and Anthem has a dealer located on their website. I started calling and the closest dealer to my house (30 miles) had several 1140’s in stock.
I was about to purchase a Yamaha aventage reciever when I stumbled upon the reviews for the Anthem set of AV receivers. Do you favor Anthem over the long tried and true Yamaha?
Hi there, please help me decide on choosing my next upgrade. I am torn between getting Arcam AV40 and Anthem MRX 740 and running it on pre amp mode. The Arcam now is reduced in price here in the UK. Its going for around £2500 new. But I am more concerned in sound quality and detail with tight strong bass for movies. Thank you.
Gene, thanks for the that test results as am looking at these products to replace my pioneer lx-86. Also looking into the NAD M17 V2i Preamplifier along with the M28 seven channel power amp and wondering if you be doing a bench test any time soon. Very expensive items and wanted to know if they are worth the extra cost compared to Anthem or Arcam high end products.
Gene - would you consider the Anthem 540 if I wanted to integrated two subs with a stereo set of speakers or do you think it worth the extra expense to go ahead a purchase the STR integrated amp?
Hey G, been watching you for a while now , great in-depth technical video. I just installed the 1140 for a customer. I need to do some bass management. What settings do you recommend for cross over . He has large full Range Focal towers , and running. 4 REL SUBS, 2 x 12 inch in front corners and 2 x 10 inch in the back corners . I am currently just at 80hz and 120 hz LFE. Just purchased the new 1140 8k model. Cannot wait! Thanks for your review. I do hope the previous 8k version and the latest version have the same or better bench mark numbers posted here.
@aspjake123 so how are you liking the Anthem? Are the bug reports exaggerated? Fan noise, hdmi/cdc switching issues? Thanks
Same here but running with monolith amps.
Hey Captain, how is the fan noise. Is it audible when there's no sound playing?
@@bikeman7982 my unit's fan doesn't make any noise. I guess some do and some don't.
@@bikeman7982 some people have replaced them with noctuas
I think that it is cool that they are so receptive to input from people of your caliber. That says a lot about them as and enthusiast focused company.
Just bought a avm 70. Couldn't be happier with the clarity. These things sound amazing with analog, stereo and theater.
My MRX740 music/theater 5.2.4 config as follows...
MCA525 powering:
- heresy 4 mains
- focal aria center
- ML Axis surround
740 AB channels (height)
- Definitive tech 6.5 Str bipole, bridged
- Definitive tech 4.5
SVS SB3000 sub x2
Once everything warmed up, amazing to me.
Could I ask what floor standing speakers are you running?

A heart filled thank you from Canada 🇨🇦 eh! Thank you for doing an amazing UNPAID service for us shmucks! Far too many people in the comments treat your videos and hard work like it’s owed to them. Thank you so much for all the hard work you and the other Audioholics crew do!
Also, I think the pinned comment has an error in it I believe. It should read 5 amplified speakers at 140w, not the stated 6. You’re stating 12 powered channels.
I’ve had the little brother, the MRX 540 for about a month. I think it sounds fantastic.
Were you ever able to troubleshoot and solve the problem? Thanks
Personally I think what’s more important is whether an amp will crap itself after just a couple of years. I’m up to my 4th AV amp now. Fortunately my Denon is serving me very well.
What models have you had fail?
Wow, it's like you're describing my set up.😁
I was interested in buying the Denon 4700 and using it as pre amp as it has excellent pre amp measurements, uses same DAC as the anthems and is much cheaper.
@@paulgross682 did you find a solution?
Excellent and honest review Gene! Great explanation of the measurements with full transparency. Kudos!
@@desray2k so you saying I will miss out because i have 1140 amd one sub ?
Does these have eq post calibrattion and how easy are the post calibration eq to access?
Amazing gene! I always wanted you to review of this wonderful receiver and you delivered! Well done!
you had me at "this is not going to be short". Thanks
Hi Gene, Thanks for time you put in taking these measurements, they truly are so valuable. I'm currently in the market for an Anthem mult-channel amp. They sound very musical.
I'm hope Anthem adds Auto 3d to the mix someday.
We love the MRX 1140

And MCA 3ch power for LCR

Thanks Gene, appreciate what you do !!!
I'm only running 3.1and 2channel, would you expect the MRX540 to perform as well with regards to it's specs ?
I am so close to adding the mrx740 to my setup but the lack of hdmi 2.1 and the chance it will never be supported is holding me back, unfortunately.
This dude is smart
Appreciate the review. I've been eyeing the avm 70 paired with ati or monoprice amps for a 5.2.4 system.
Hi, which Denon did you have and did you run the Denons with external amps.
Got a old mrx510 is still use as purely a pre amp ..
Fantastic amps
Only the hdmi boards were changed. Analog circuits are the same.

Great review Gene! Are these brand new chassis? I read that they recently had to switch from AKM to ESS DAC's so I'd be curious which revision you got.
Also would like to know this. I have the launch version of the 740 before all reference to the DAC models was scrubbed from the data sheets.
@@SnowBob302 I sent this queestion directly to Anthem, I owned the 740 right after launch, Minve say Harware Version 2. Here is what Anthem had to say:
The DAC models which we are using are AKM AK4458VN in MRX 540/740/1140 and AVM 70 except for AVM 90.
Thanks Gene - Would you recommend MRX 540 or a DENON/MARANTZ equivalent for a 7 channel family room setup ?
How do you rate these against the Yamaha A8A and A6A?
Thanks for the Anthem tests. Looking for a new 9-amplified-channel AVR with HDMI 2.1. Any word on when the final review of the Yamaha Aventage RX-A6A will be out? Thanks! Edit: Decided to add two more height channels, so need to choose between Yamaha RX-A8A and more expensive Anthem MRX 1140, or something else (that doesn't run hot). Room correction system also important.
Interested in this as well as I want to move my 3080 to second system and get a replacement for my main setup which needs 9 amplified channels as well
Great review!
Great show Gene! Love these.
how is the stereo performance on the 1140? is it as good as a Marantz?
Hi Gene
We're running the MRX 740 with an MCA 225 Gen 2 amp to power a two channel with the Founder 80F.
- I asking to see where these units are now compared to one I had shortly after launch.
thanks Gene for the avr reviews. im looking to upgrade my avr at some point.i have the top YAMAHA separates . had them for a couple of years now.i just dont feel that theres a big enough gap in technology at present to jump ship. so i watch with keen intrest. cheers
Hey Gene I was wondering how the Arcam avr20 matches up with Anthem 1140. Your input is always appreciated, thanks
Why would I upgrade my 1120 to the 1140, after all is said and done?
Looks-wise, these just kill both Marantz’ old and new AV gear. I wish they were sold here in Japan.
Is there a big difference in pre amp mode between this and sr8015? Like sound separation and overall sound quality?
Weird I never hear the fans going on my unit.
As always excellent work, according to your taste and ears Jeje what do you prefer this avrs or your Marantz sr8015? (quality sound and separation)
If you're only using the internal amps, Marantz SR8015 for sure.
Any idea how close the performance of the 540 is to its bigger brothers? I hope close because I just bought one lol. I don't need the extra channels and extra 40W the larger models offer.
Hi Gene,
Great video, appreciate all the measurements you review with your listeners.
This or the new AVR a1h ???
Gene , Did you get a chance to near how loud the internal fan was during the test ... Many comments stating that they are quite loud when required ... You're thoughts and findings would be great ... Kind Regards
I heard the fan kick on when testing thr Class D amp but it wasn't too loud. My AP has its own fan noise so I will pay closer attention when it's installed.
Thank you for a quick reply ... Look forward to you're findings ... Kind Regards
Zero fan noise with my 1140 but it’s well ventilated along with the rest of my AV rack.
@@thillyard1 where can I buy the Anthem 1140?
@@willpower6651 Audio Advice and Crutchfield are authorized resellers. They were both out of stock for me when I was searching and Anthem has a dealer located on their website. I started calling and the closest dealer to my house (30 miles) had several 1140’s in stock.
I was about to purchase a Yamaha aventage reciever when I stumbled upon the reviews for the Anthem set of AV receivers. Do you favor Anthem over the long tried and true Yamaha?
With Marantz Cinema 50 reviewed so well, which is the better buy?
Hi there, please help me decide on choosing my next upgrade. I am torn between getting Arcam AV40 and Anthem MRX 740 and running it on pre amp mode. The Arcam now is reduced in price here in the UK. Its going for around £2500 new. But I am more concerned in sound quality and detail with tight strong bass for movies.
Thank you.
How good is the stereo? Is it Class A and AB or both with A ,AB buttons. Please reply? Thanks.
Are you planning on doing any measurements on the onkyo tx-rz50? I've been hearing really good things about this receiver, especially for the money.
how does the anthem 740 compare to the Yamaha rxa8a? which one should you buy for future proofing?
Gene, thanks for the that test results as am looking at these products to replace my pioneer lx-86. Also looking into the NAD M17 V2i Preamplifier along with the M28 seven channel power amp and wondering if you be doing a bench test any time soon. Very expensive items and wanted to know if they are worth the extra cost compared to Anthem or Arcam high end products.
Gene - would you consider the Anthem 540 if I wanted to integrated two subs with a stereo set of speakers or do you think it worth the extra expense to go ahead a purchase the STR integrated amp?
I wish I could find one to buy. The 1140 is the one I want for my new home theater.
What are your thoughts on the DAC in the 740 compared to the AVM70?? Do you think they're on par with each other or is the 70 Waaaay better??
Hello there...
Can I ask If we can have new Arcam avr11,21,31 and 41 rewiev and compare it to Anthem and JBL synthesis......?
Hey G, been watching you for a while now , great in-depth technical video. I just installed the 1140 for a customer. I need to do some bass management. What settings do you recommend for cross over . He has large full Range Focal towers , and running. 4 REL SUBS, 2 x 12 inch in front corners and 2 x 10 inch in the back corners . I am currently just at 80hz and 120 hz LFE. Client Not interested in miniDSP . Any videos on this ? Thanks for your support
Another great vid gene i have the 1140 my 3 front speakers mains and centre have theses spec 50 - 300 Watts RMS recommended amplifier power
Sensitivity

Impedance
Nominally 6 Ohms (minimum 4.9 Ohms)
Configuration do you think if i add 324 gen 2 power amp for the from 3 speakers will get much improvement?
Ahhh should i buy the 540, all i can afford, or marnatz or nad?
Trying to choose between an Arcam AVR20 and the Anthem MRX1120 any help would greatly be appreciated
It’s huge!
When will someone make a small one?
