DEALER WARNING ON TRAVELING WITH SILVER AND GOLD! Is THIS the Right Silver to Avoid Confiscation??

  • In this video my bullion dealer discusses what could happen to your silver or gold if you try to travel with your precious metals. Tim Marschner of The Coin and Stamp Shop talks with a woman who is converting her silver bars--including an Engelhard silver bar and two Johnson Matthey bars--into constitutional silver (90% silver coins). She is preparing for a trip and wants the silver least likely to be confiscated. What would Tim do with his silver or gold if he traveled abroad? Is junk silver the best silver to have in your luggage when dealing with customs or airport security? The answers may surprise you! Never before has stacking precious metals been as important to do as it is today. Protect yourself from out-of-control governments, evil central banks, and the failing US dollar's grip as the world's reserve currency. Make sure you build a stack of silver rounds, silver bars, silver coins, and gold coins as essential barter and wealth preservation!

I told him it was a full roll of silver eagles, and that I am a professional coin collector that the world did not need to be open because it was sealed from the mint and I would appreciate not opening the tube. I've traveled to South America with three gold Krugerrands (1 oz), just keep it with my change. No one ever stopped me, or asked. I take it with me in case I ever lose my wallet, or can't access local cash abroad... there are always dealers that will buy it. I took about 2500$ worth of silver to The Gambia. I had coins and rounds. I was fat and pregnant with two children. I was in a wheelchair. I was pushed through TSA. The detector did beep but I just said I have some metal coins that are beeping. No problem. However, once I got to Gambia, they checked me thoroughly, and it was no problem except for a begging security agent at the airport. I gave him two and went on about my business. I was moving to Gambia so I needed those coins. When the lights go out or your bank card don’t work, you can easily use the silver there. A jeweler will buy it easily there. And some people that know what it is will barter and accept as payment for market goods.

At the time (2018) it only cost $750 for the bar. I recently sold it in England for nearly double that, and bought 2 gold George V sovereigns, which are much easier to carry around for sure.

Hi Yankee thanks for the video. Here are my thoughts on the subject. I am an American ex patriot who has been living in Spain since 2009. I've been stacking since 2014, and have flown to and from Spain to the USA each summer, almost always travelling with metals. Long story short DO NOT TRAVEL WITH BARS. The bars is what grabs the attentions of the securtiy, who then call the cops when they see you travelling with metals. A few times the cops came and said no problem. The only time the cops came when I didn't have bars was when I had many coins in one bag. They called the cops that time because a lot of the coins were gold. Even then the cops didn't give me a hard time. (These examples have been me leaving the EU for USA). One time though I was stopped coming back into Spain at Madrid airport. The cops confiscated all my silver bars. I had 90 days to claim them. In the end I needed to hire someone to do this for me, as I had no idea what to do. I had to pay 21% import tax on the silver (at the spot price) and also I had to physically go back to Madrid airport to pick it up. They wouldn't send it in the mail, and I live 5 hours away from Madrid by car. That was the last time I will travel with silver bars. I got the bars in the end (I think it was about 200 oz) but it was a huge pain in the ass plus the money. They said they were going to "destroy" the material if I didn't claim it in 90 days.

That lady you interviewed is wise.. About ten years ago my brother -in-law brought his father's coin collection from Scotland to the United States. It was a whole brief case of sterling silver Shillings and Florins. When he went through customs they flagged is bag in the metal detector. They said, "we need to look at all your coins and make sure you aren't bringing gold out of the U.K." Once they saw it was not gold, they could care less. I think most of the customs agents would not have been able to tell what was silver and what was clad....After they saw it wasn't gold coins, they waved him right through.

I.m Canadian and travelled within the country with my silver coin collection, it didn't have to go through customs. The person doing the bag scan for checked bags tore my backpack appart but when he saw it was a coin collection and not something else he passed it and I walked away with my 100oz of silver.
I had a cousin in North Carolina who wanted to sell his gold coins and I offered to buy them at a higher amount than the dealers would give him for them and we split the shipping. We were both happy, but it was an uninsured package with an ounce of gold in it. Arrived on time and with no issues, other than the regular wait at the border that all packages go through.

I kept it in my carry-on and it was checked and never had a problem. The tubes weren’t even opened and inspected. There is no law against taking silver out of the country as far as I know. Bringing it in to England could be troublesome if stopped and inspected at the UK customs because it would need to be taxed.

Silver is too heavy to pick up and move esp to take it on a on a plane. So I sold that stack. I kept my gold, about 6 oz in coins at that time. Put it in my laptop bag. At the airport they scan you and x-ray everything so of course they found it. The customs lady asked me what it was, I said my coin collection. Was worried for a moment but they let me thru with it. Wouldn't try that now. They make every excuse in the world to take wealth off people nowadays. My income tax bill was $5,268 for 2023. Hello? I have a net income of about 42,000 in retirement. Crazy.

It depends on what border you're crossing. If you're going to Canada you're better off with 999 or 9999 silver than 90%. Same goes for gold. If you're headed to Germany I know they have a tendency to seize anything valuable. Do your homework, know the laws and how they're enforced where you plan on going. Be very careful when you're traveling with metal. Some places are perfectly fine with you carrying it so long as it's under a certain value, other places are very likely to take your valuables.
Speaking from some amount of experience here; if you want to travel with metal buy it as jewelry. If you want a couple of thousand dollars in gold you're generally safer with it around your neck than in coins in your pocket or suitcase

Interesting one there Yankee. As a UK citizen I was surprised to hear that if Tim sent a package with Insurance and traceability that it may not get to the receipiant and probably taken by our friends at HMRC, (your IRS). As you may know Gold in the UK is Tax Free but have heard many horror stories of people who have bought Gold from Europe, the US and other parts of the world with the likes of DHL and UPS demanding a VAT payment of 20% before delivering the goods, and if you refuse to pay and complain it can take months before they relent and you get your Gold. Its a nest of vipers when it comes to shipping PM's over here so best buy from a UK dealer!!

I find all of this shocking! This reminds me of a company I used to buy from in the UK ( silver and gold jewelry and also gems ). Was no problem getting to me in the US but the returns were horrid!! I returned a rather large amount all at once bcs I figured it would save me on shipping and safer to not be lost. It took probably 8 months for them to receive it. I knew they did bcs I also included a gift to one of the presenters and they acknowledged it. BUT… they only said they got a portion of it back. Lost about $2000ish? Been awhile so I can’t recall the exact amount. Never did that again. I just couldn’t believe it!! Thought they were lying to me but now hearing this I’m thinking maybe customs took some? The company seemed like there was no concern on their part and refused to refund me what they hadn’t received and it was too late to use my bank for the difference since the purchases were over 6months. Yeah not so good. I included copies of all my receipts and highlighted the returns as well. The worst part is they advertise how easy returns are and if you don’t like the product then just send it back no questions asked. So you know what’s the risk of not seeing it in person first before buying. 🙈 Yeah my husband wasn’t too happy with me

If a crooked airport employee scans your luggage and sees anything that looks like money or jewelry it will be gone! This has happened to me. I'm pretty sure the theft occurred during connecting flight luggage transfer at the Atlanta Georgia airport. The handmade necklace I had bought overseas as a gift for my daughter was stolen, and the zipper on my change purse had been opened. Though the change purse had been packed empty and put in an interior compartment they somehow knew it was there and opened it, obviously hoping to find cash. Another life lesson learned.

Silver and gold are considered as monetary assets in the EU. When traveling to the EU, ALL of the monetary assets, including cash, you have on you cannot exceed €10,000 or you must declare it beforehand. Precious metals are calculated at the current spot price in €. Some people like to travel with a few gold coins in their possession in case they get stranded somewhere and ATMs and/or banks may be closed because of some black swan event. That’s fine, but remember that effects how much fiat you can legally hold with you as well. Two 1oz gold coins in your wallet @€2200 per coin, means you’re restricted to carry only €5600 upon entering the EU. If you have more than that and get inspected, you risk legal consequences which could easily lead to potential confiscation.

Hello Yankee.. Regarding customs gold confiscation, My wife and I are Americans that live outside of the US. This causes difficulty for stacking as you can imagine, but we have found a solution. We buy bullion gold jewlery. Specifically, 24kt bangles and bracelets. Although the premium is a little more, we have no issues travelling because it is jewlery. Fact is, we have entered the US with over 30K in gold without question. you can also attach the 1 oz Proclaim Liberty Gold Bar SD bullion offers to 14 kt gold chains and you instantly have jewlrey which does not qulaify as bullion like coins or bars. There are always ways around the rules. Good stacking.

I asked my dealer how much value I would lose if I drilled a hole in a gold ounce, put it on a thin chain, and called it jewelry, and tried to sell the coin to him. He said 5% loss over undrilled bullion price. I don't mind losing 5% if I was sure I could get away with it....

I recently traveled via air with $150 face value of constitutional silver that I had bought in a few different coin shops during my vacation. No issues getting it all home, but the x-ray machines weren't able to penetrate my bagged silver, so TSA did flag my carry-on for searching. They didn't confiscate anything, but all travel was in the US. If I'd traveled internationally and with silver bullion, it might have been a different story. Customs in any country might want to know why you're travelling with precious metals, as it's basically, non-traceable money.

Every country has their rules on silver/gold coins and bars. Most countries do not confiscate declared legal goods including gold and silver. You may have to pay import tax/duty. What's even more true is that most countries do not practise civil forfeiture as they do in the US. It's actually a lot safer to travel within most countries than it is in the US due to the civil forfeiture practices here.

@@ptaeiy Years ago, I knew a greenhouse wholesaler that traveled the US buying plants, flowers, etc. at bargain prices because he always carried cash to make his purchases. I don't remember which US state he was in, but he got pulled over by a canine police officer for a broken taillight. After asking the wholesaler for his registration and proof of insurance, the officer asked if he was carrying any illegal drugs or large amounts of cash. Since he had nothing to hide he said, "Yes, I'm carrying about $15,000 in cash."
The officer then asked to see the money. The man pulled it out of his glove box showed it to the officer. At that point, the officer went back to his car and brought his drug dog to the vehicle. The dog immediately got a "drug positive" hit on the money. The officer then told the wholesaler he was confiscating the money because it was now considered drug money. The wholesaler was not arrested nor ticketed, but it took him nearly a year and several thousand dollars in lawyers fees to get his money back. The civil forfeiture laws in the US are being used as an excuse to rob the public.

@@rvalens2 He should count his blessings to get it back in one year. Many are still fighting for their hard earned money after many years. There was a story in GA that the local PO and ATF would routinely seize your cash and tell you to go or miss your flight. Most ppl would get on the flight thinking there was a misunderstanding and they'll get their money back later. Nope, they never get them back. The PO and ATF sees those seized cash as teir revenue stream. google *Flying with cash? Law enforcement can seize your money without telling you why.*

Reminds me of the Knights Templar encryption system. They had an encryption algorithm that allowed them to deposit their coin at Banker A, then Banker A would encrypt a key and give it to the traveler. Then the Banker would arrive at his destination and talker to Banker B giving him the encryption code to convert their algorithm back to coin.
The crypto coin, PAXG, supposedly allows you to convert their crypto into gold in London- a limited version of the Knight's Templar system. It'd be nice to see this more wide spread to allow you to travel safely with your metals. ...no affiliation.

I have been traveling in Europe with a tube of silver Philharmonics in my backpack. It turned up on the x-ray in the airport and I was called to the side. They wanted to know what I had in my backpack, as all they could see was a black rectangle. They even showed me the x-ray of it.😁
The silver Philharmonics are legal tender with a value of 1.50 € each so it is money. So if I am allowed to the 10.000 in cash I would do it with Philharmonics in Europe.

They tore the car apart , looking for that gold. Drug dogs, everything they even took apart the engine and left us unable to travel . We flew home the gold was waiting.

I traveled from Germany to the US with several hundred ounces and had no problem. TSA told me I didn't need to declare precious metals because it wasn't cash. I would advise declaring it unless you have a really small amount that looks like pocket change.
