I'm excited for this series! I would especially love to see how you reinforce Arrow to ignore the environment (even a new one) and find value in playing with you. I would also love to see how you get him to not act on impulse when sharing a sidewalk with another dog walker. Both of those issues I'm struggling with and the latter is one I've made great progress on, just need to clean it up which is where I'm stumped.

I struggled with dog reactivity (he wanted to play/sniff them but then was frustrated by the leash which created a violent outburst) and some leash manners for 2ish years. I tried positive only and e-collar but nobody I worked with taught a punishment and reward system like you did in your videos. Within 2-3 months I was finally able to walk in 10 ft another dog and not have my arm yanked off or people think my dog is aggressive. Now 4-6 months later and I can easily share a sidewalk with oncoming dog walkers! It's so nice!! The only issue is where I'm struggling where my dog indulges in both motivations. He rarely reacts, instead he stares and eyes the dog, then looks up at me for a bit. I'll reward the eye contact but then he'll go back to honing in on the other dog, then repeat the process. I stopped rewarding and am trying to punish constant eyeing but it's not working or is not effective due to poor technique or lack of knowledge on my end. So I'm hoping you show something along those lines with Arrow soon! Regardless, your free videos have helped greatly. So thank you a lot. You really have made a difference in my and my dog's life :')

Wonderful series - can’t wait to see updates. Arrow reminds me a bit of my rescue - big boy, surrendered, sociable, low impulse control, a little insecure, easily distracted. I’ve had him 2 years now and we have made great strides but I would have done things a lot differently at the outset had I seen this first. Am going to recommend this video to the rescue organization and my local shelter as a primer for new adoptees. Just wonderful content!
Same here. My GS is over 100lb (around 50k, Wich is my weight). He was already 2 yo when he came, now he is 4, and I am going back to basics. I wish I had this video before, and this whole channel. Re training myself on my training/handler skills to be able to change many things. I hired a trainer, but, he just want me to do the same things I already did. Miles is changing my mindset on many things
I just found your channel and I literally binged watched at least 5 of your videos. You are an excellent communicator and such an inspiring teacher. I dont have a dog currently but hope to foster/adopt one when the time is right and I will be keeping this video in mind and sharing it with everyone who i know is going to adopt/get a dog. this video single handedly changed the way i interacted with my brand new 5 month old rescue puppy. I watched this video te day before i got her and using these ground rules i now have an amazing, house trained 6 month old pitbull with basic obedience almost mastered (inside the house) thank you so much you really helped soo much with this video, mainly ther management part was the biggest takeaway from this video I didnt already know thank you miles
8:24 haha. Just rescued an 8 months old border collie mix that was a skinny stray on the street. Didn't know what she was at the time just that she was skinny and friendly and didn't have any open wounds or collar and wasn't near homes. A friend informs me she looks like a border collie mix. I do some research and realize my good deed may be a punishment for me! It's been over 10 years since my previous dog passed away. Now that youtube is such an easy resource, watching various vids to brush up on puppy things. Seeing this vid about 36 hours in, but I've accomplished the goals pretty well. Although, if she isn't tired out enough to sleep, she's now "feeling safe" enough to start testing boundaries with puppy biting or chewing. She worked on a treat infused Kong for an hour straight before deciding a nap was in order. Dog is smarter than a lot of people I meet, though, and super motivated to please with training. We've got sit, come, and down learned and a couple other acrobatic things she's figured out how to do (stuff I could probably put on cue but just random play so far). If anyone lost their bag of crack... My new dog may have eaten it (breed joke, SPCA types, joke). 13:18 I started doing obedience because she seemed to want to have to think about something. She taught herself to not pull on the leash (which was awesome). Her best reward is praise and attention after doing something, so I had to give her something specific to do....along with allowing her exploration walks so she can examine her new environment. She taught herself that if she creates tension in the lead to return to me and sit for a training task or more walking. 17:20 didn't put up much fight getting in the vehicle. Didn't want get out afterwards like "nope, it's comfy here and nobody's chasing me, and I can sleep peacefully." Going inside, had fear of the door. Looked confused inside, like she thought she was somewhere she shouldn't be (to anthropomorphize a dog's cognitive process). Finally, after walking in and out a few times the door and being inside wasn't scary and she's more interested in if she's doing a good job going where I'm leading her. Really interesting watching how their personality and cognitive process or instincts show up.

It's so great to hear that such dogs are given a second chance! I have a large german-netherlandish shepherd mix and even playing can lead to injuries they are just super strong and quick. My boy would definitely correct a kid or an adult if they went too far but I can clean his wounds without any adverse reactions and after 12 years I totally trust his instincts. I would be very interested in how you integrated Arrow with your other dog as I'm thinking about taking a rescue dog in the future. My main concern is how to be sure both dogs get along.

Yep the GSD mix bit us both at some point but it was our fault 😂. This dog seems pretty good for one that was rarely taken out.

Going to be rescuing a dog soon with my girlfriend, you are the best and I’m excited because I know with your training techniques I will be able to give this dog their best life. I do already have two other dogs at my house, would you recommend them being out of the house for the first couple days to not overwhelm them? I’m working with my current dogs on impulse control and being too forward when meeting new dogs. Your videos have already helped me out with my current dogs sooo much I’m just waiting until I reach certain goals with them until I get the new dog just so we can have a chill safe environment for him.
100%; i have fostered over 30 rescues and i follow similar steps 1) make sure the dog feels safe and is able to decompress; i do not let it roam the house, i do not take it to new places, meet new people, etc. for the next few days. The dog needs to feel safe with you and his immediate environment. i only interact with it in calm manner. 2) i teach the dog the place command; 3) i teach the dog the meaning of no. Once the dog is acclimated you can give it more freedom but not beforehand. I try to establish the relationship that i will protect and take care of the dog, in return the dog needs to follow my commands and that i am the leader.
30:38 My mom's dog bit me on the lip when I was 6ish. I was dangling a treat up and he finally got tired of the teasing and jumped up to get the treat and got me in the process. The dog wasn't human aggressive but he also had no interest in playing with me (thus me dangling the treat to get his attention). Yes, he bit. Yes it was totally induced by me. Yes it was totally preventable if mom hadn't left a 6 year old to supervise the dog.
I’m not the biggest fan of the crate but I might be changing my mind because I feel like it would help a shelter dog get more comfortable but I’m sure there is alternatives and I’d love to hear them
@@lucaswedderburnit gives them a safe place to go that's there's and it helps prevent them from causing mischief since you can't keep eyes on them 24 hrs a day.
Can you do a video on the steps that a dog has to go through to be well behaved in the home? I.e how to slowly let your dog free in the home by building rules
I was wondering if you could give me advice, I just got a German shepherd mix rescue, how would I decompress him, he has no crate training. I made the mistake of letting him roam free when he first arrived at the home on day one and gave him a bed. We are on day 2 I did close him off letting him only be in the living room with his bed which he likes. I brought the crate into the living room too. Ive read and watch that they need to decompress the first 48. Have I messed things up? Help!
Any advice for integrating a rescue border collie cross who is 4 years old and a mum, now spayed but has had puppies, 6 months ago....with 2 old cats 13 years old....?
"playing by myself..." That's me and my 5 year old female GSD that I adopted almost 4 months ago. She has been a challenge, in that nothing really motivates her (not really food motivated. Chicken gizzards, and hearts are the only thing that gets her even mildly engaged. Does not play). Since she doesn't play, the only exercise I can provide are walks. She's also a very fearful dog. This makes it very stressful, because I'm so focused on the fact that she doesn't do anything but lay around, and wait for me to take her for a walk. It's very depressing for me, and it has to be the same for her, but I'm out of ideas to get her to engage. Really looking forward to this series, even though this dog is completely different than my dog.
Thanks for adopting. I hear GSD have a hard time getting adopted because they're so many needing a home. I hope you're still sticking it out and things improving.

It's impossible to develop a relationship with her because of this. At the same time, has extreme separation anxiety. I don't get to leave the house much, if I do it's not for more than 1-3 hours. My 80 year old mom has to stay with her, so we never get to visit friends together. Sticking with it, but need some serious help from someone with rehab experience. I can't re-home her because I refuse to put her through the trauma. My mom has suggested several times that it would be better for her, and me, if I were to put her down. I believe in karma, so putting down a perfectly healthy dog (physically speaking), doesn't sound like good karma. I'm completely lost on what to do. That's our current status 🥹
I found a 1 year old (I think) German shepherd female shivering and curled up on the side of a country road two weeks ago tomorrow. I have basically followed the process you describe here. She attached to me like a leech from that first day. My biggest problem has been not being able to leave the house without her. I'm looking into buying an outdoor kennel so I can go skiing. She willingly gets into a crate, but I had a dog sitter come over to stay with her a week ago. We started with her in the crate. I went outside and far enough from the house she may not have been able to smell me. The dog sitter recorded her going crazy in the crate because I left the house. So I did not go skiing. The dog sitter and I were not willing to chance the crazy dog. Otherwise Grace, the dog, has good habits and is calm in the house. Any suggestions?
If you tend to let her out of the crate every time she turns crazy dog then that is exactly what she's going to do when she doesn't want to be in the crate. Unfortunately the only way to get her to stop being like that is to say hey you're going to be fine and make her work her way through it. Start off with small increments of time maybe it's only 5-10 minutes and then when she gets good with those times you just work your way up but if you don't start to make her work her way through it on her own then she's going to have tremendous amount of anxiety anytime you leave. Also try leaving her with a high-value, rewarding, but long lasting, chew to keep her busy past that initial phase of you leaving. Obviously if she goes crazy dog in a way that is going to be harmful then you probably should talk to someone professional.
You and your new dog is nowhere close even in the relationship that you can leave your dog with somewhere else. She attached to you, doesn't mean she understand that she trust you to come back. Seeing the dog sitter, a random stranger in the house make her even more anxious (not socialized properly). You need to do plenty of training for your new dog for now. If you can't, then perhaps, it's better to rehome her to somebody whose lifestyle is better suitable for her.
May I ask, what are your feelings/thoughts on the "Gentle Leader" (face) type of leads? (Not for use in training, per se` but for walks until basic obedience and understanding has been obtained...or your thoughts just in general) or should you not even start with or introduce one
It's a terrible tool. It's a horse training tool. Most dogs find it very uncomfortable and even aversive when pressure being applied. If you're introducing it to your dog, the work in itself to desensitize your dog to this head halter is often more similar to muzzle. You may as well muzzle train your dog to make this whole process can be useful like when you need to muzzle your dog for vet examination. For new dog, it maybe even to beneficial to feed a little less in this relationship building. Not going on long walk far away from home. Focus on feeding game, crate training game, dog way etiquette, housebreaking game... to use up excess energy while building engagement and strengthen that relationship. You don't want to create new bad behaviours now only to correct these same bad behaviors right after you get somewhere with the newly built relationship with the dog.

May I ask, what are your feelings/thoughts on the "Gentle Leader" (face) type of leads? (Not for use in training, per se` but for walks until basic obedience and understanding has been obtained...or your thoughts just in general) or should you not even start with or introduce one
It's a terrible tool. It's a horse training tool. Most dogs find it very uncomfortable and even aversive when pressure being applied.
If you're introducing it to your dog, the work in itself to desensitize your dog to this head halter is often more similar to muzzle. You may as well muzzle train your dog to make this whole process can be useful like when you need to muzzle your dog for vet examination.
For new dog, it maybe even to beneficial to feed a little less in this relationship building. Not going on long walk far away from home. Focus on feeding game, crate training game, dog way etiquette, housebreaking game... to use up excess energy while building engagement and strengthen that relationship. You don't want to create new bad behaviours now only to correct these same bad behaviors right after you get somewhere with the newly built relationship with the dog.
