    It took me 4 years to figure out how to fix my dogs reactivitity after getting her from the shelter. Now I find it summarized in this video... THIS IS GOLD FOLKS! Be the líder that your dog need, structure, discipline, play and afection is all what they need. And if you want that happens outside, it needs to start inside. Again, THIS IS GOLD!

    This is such great advice! She's never been interested in tug or fetch, but loves to search or play hide and seek. You are showing us how to get her to play with her toys. Am starting today! Also, to extend the place command for impulse control. I haven't done a long extension because she's calm and obedient in the house, but this will help when we're outside too. Brilliant.

    You are honestly the best dog trainer I’ve seen. I just watched your loose leash training video and was amazed. I agree with everything you said ESPECIALLY when you pointed out dogs shouldn’t be tethered to you and allow them to do natural things.
    Most trainers online I’ve seen want complete control over dogs at all times and as if they’re puppets. I do still believe they need some control over them to keep everyone safe. Anyways thank you!

    Honestly, I believe you are the best dog trainer on UA-cam. The combination of graphs, outlines, real life clips of training after you’ve explained the concept along with your tremendous knack of dog psychology is the best thing out-there and it’s my perfect learning style! I have one question, do you leave the e-collar on your dog whenever he’s off leash?

    • @hamiltondogtraining
      @hamiltondogtraining  2 місяці тому +14

      Thanks! As a general rule, you should always wear it. After the training, the e-collar serves as your insurance policy for those “just-in-case” moments.
      Similar to a seatbelt - do you NEED to wear it? Probably not… but you do anyways just in case. The e-collar is the same. Most of the time you will never use it, but it’s there just in case you do.
      To answer your question, yes, you should probably always have an e-collar on. But realistically, you could walk without one and not have any issues 99.99% of the time. (Just like a seatbelt.)

    I have watched 100’s of different dog training videos on UA-cam but this video is the first to give so much detailed information. You make it so we can understand and give detailed examples. I’ve been doing well training my 3.5 year old female Rottweiler but it’s been hard finding the right information. All the training I’ve watched is spot on with other trainers and your knowledge and skill shows in this video. I hope you continue spreading your knowledge and teaching people the correct ways of doing things. Thank you.

    Thanks! I have a 91 lb 2 year old GSD/pitbull/boxer mix rescued from shelter 11 months ago. Went from basically feral to dog loving his new life but full of crazy energy. How do I expend all of his energy besides bike riding him and 2 walks every day? I’m exhausted and had foot surgery 3 weeks ago! I play with him so much! Thank you!

    • @hamiltondogtraining

      You’re doing MORE than enough! Now you need to teach him how to be okay with doing nothing. Start by teaching him the place command inside the house.

    • @olk3

      I always think about service dogs. They need to be still in an office for hours every day. It's taught. If you gave a small child the choice between sitting quietly with a toy or book, vs going to an amusement park, you'd be permanently taking him to the amusement park.

    • @Southerngrl

      @@olk3great answer I have a higher energy breed service animal. Its very challenging and I'm teaching him to settle. Idt he knew he cld “settle” or what that meant before. He still however looks at me like a kid in waiting rooms, but were only 6mo into breaking him into the world. For the higher energy breeds, it was told to me that exercise only makes them athletes. So, we do enrichment, and smaller games indoors when I feel bad or we can't work and or play ALOT!!

    • @Southerngrl
      @Southerngrl 2 місяці тому +1

      I'm not a dog trainer, but u seem to have a difficult breed. The boxer and GSD are def. intelligent enough to learn anything you throw at them. Add the pit to it, and u got an athlete on ur hands. But, it shld be a great guard dog, and great company.
      Maybe try mental enrichment and stimulate his mind. What drives him food, or play? Mine is a boxer Hound pointer mix and he wld exercise 2hrs a day if I cld. But, the mental enrichment and activities that keep us engaged and keep him learning and thinking can wear them out as well. Think snuffle mats, Kongs, games of find it etc. The boxer side of these pups want someone to give them a job to do. The Shepard is wrkn breed also. The pit can be a lover and a fighter. Some of us have more difficult breeds but with direction and leadership they will eventually calm down and know what we expect.
      I'm new to this channel but I think he's one of the best on YT. Happy training and hope ur foot heals. He's right though, place works very well. I've started to tech “settle” and we have time for him to rest and do nothing.

    • @olk3
      @olk3 2 місяці тому +1

      @@SoutherngrlRe "exercise turns them into athletes", that's what we had with a previous dog, a solid athlete. The more we exercised him, the more we built up his stamina. Even the vet was wowed at how he was solid muscle. Nature can only be molded so far; you get a set of genetics, and there are limits to how much that can be modified. That dog, as wonderful as he was, could never have been a service animal, better suited for, say, running the sled in the Iditarod race.

    So great to see a trainer. Focus on the relationship as the primary corner stone. Then work with motivators. Dogs with problems such as reactivity (or gained a high level of control) it’s more of an intervention. great video. IMHO👊😅

    I've trained my own dogs over a lifetime, since the 1970s, even a couple to AKC certification levels. I'm so glad to see someone who has gotten back to the basics of reward and correction. With the recent wave of positive-only or worse still "operant conditioning", I felt like the lone voice of reason in the darkness. Thanks!

    • @Jase2306
      @Jase2306 2 місяці тому

      genuinely curious, whats wrong with operant conditioning?

    • @olk3
      @olk3 2 місяці тому

      @ It takes forever. You wait for the desired behavior instead of impelling the behavior. Take "sit". Place dog in seated position using word "sit". A few reps and the dog gets it. Operant would wait for the dog to sit on his own - I guess you follow him around till the magical event happens - and say "sit". Repeat a few reps. Clearly operant is an order of magnitude more time consuming.

    • @nickcarncross6137
      @nickcarncross6137 Місяць тому

      Operant conditioning was the start to modern ABA. Or whatever behavioral science you want. You're still using the theories of reinforcement and punishment if you prompt the dog.
      Positive only is ridiculous. Good luck getting a dog hell bent on humping, eating trash, snapping at others, etc. without teach it that those aren't okay.
      I hope studies are done on the euthanization rate of dogs in places with positive only training vs places with common sense.

    • @CCOREY5
      @CCOREY5 Місяць тому +1

      @@olk3
      Operant conditioning is just voluntary behavior being shaped by consequences. That is all learning, all the time.
      Maybe you’re specifically thinking about only training through “capturing” a volunteered behavior vs “luring” or training through negative reinforcement: like by pushing his hind quarters down or pull-up on a leash.
      A good trainer uses it all.

    Have you studied or worked in ABA or behavioral science before? It's nice to see someone who understands thar behavior needs to be shaped.
    I love the part on play first before the obedience. Back when i worked ABA with kids, there was a concept, "being the giver of all good things," if the kids wanted to play a certain way and it wasnt dangerous or socially inapprorpriate, do it. You are establishing yourself as a motivating operation.
    Why would the kid (or dog) listen to you at all if all you do is boss them around and have no history of being a source of fun.
    This is great stuff, man!

      She seems to enjoy playing in the garden. But she shows excitement more with a ball than a tug. She will chase the ball and bring it back but after a couple of minutes, sometimes sooner she will go off and lay down with the ball.
      With the tug she will grab it with her mouth but that's it. She shows no resistance pulling back or trying to tug it. I could pull her back with just one finger holding on to the tug. I'm not being too ruff or thrashing the tug around when she has it in her mouth. And if I let her win the tug she will just go lay down with it. So I just don't know how to make tug more exiting for her.
      When in public she will chase after a ball, but the same thing with going and laying down. But shows zero interest in the tug.
      After watching the video I'm just going to start from step one with play and keep at it
      My dog is a border collie cross breed if that makes any difference

      @@davidwelcer1316 im not a play expert but it seems that she has self reinforce laying down and enjoy herself with the toy. The way you would go about it is having her on a long line and not let her self reinforce those behaviours. I’m sure there is techniques to build that up. But I have no idea I’m sorry. I have a border collie as well and I got him since he was a puppy so I was able to build that drive pretty easily. Also he only get his toys when we play together.

He's incredibly smart! His reactive behaviors are putting me in danger. I feel too that his reactivity is frustration opposed to aggression. He has 4 little friends that he absolutely loves and they love him. I walk him around while I ride my mobility scooter. Ive gone to other positive only trainers and their techniques just don't work with him. They just don't. They told me to just throw down some high value rewards (treats). Then they tried it and he didn't care about the treats. Im definitely going to try playing with him and different obedience commands. I've tried everything. And to be completely honest, I have, at times, given up. As you say, you don't want to force them.
    She may get "prancy", and I take that cue as she wants to do something with me, but it lasts for a few seconds. Apparently , whatever I'm doing is not what she wants (can't imagine how frustrating this must be for her). she lays down, and just stares out into space, or walks away, and lays down away from me.
    I don't want to give up, but I can't figure out what she wants me to do. This is the most difficult thing i have ever faced in my life.
    She just lives with me, and I can't figure out how to change this.

      It can be achieved, but you would have to hunt down a very few dogs with genetic predisposition for that herding dogs like Border Collie, German Shepherd, Belgian Shepherd that actually works on farm trained without Ecollar. And they can still be unreliable off leashing in crowded street, urban settings though

    What do I do if the correction triggers her reaction over the threshold? If she is on the fixation phase if I apply a correction it would intermediately trigger her reaction.

    Just got to your part on the e collar. Love it for off leash, it is the only guarantee for safety while off leash.
    Why do you use it as a form of negative reinforcement instead of as a correction?

    • @nickcarncross6137
      @nickcarncross6137 Місяць тому

      Two points: using the e collar for pressure before giving the command and releasing the pressure is negatively reinforcing to just do as they were told.
      Using the e collar as a correction while on a walk to leaving heel or ignoring a command is positive punishment, to decrease whichever undesirable behavior.
      Worked as an RBT for awhile and now a dog handler, so I know a little bit about behavioral science theory.
      I just wonder if conditioning the collar in the way you describe is more effective than simply as a correction tool.

    Hi i appreciate your fully detailed video and explanation but the correction you've shown @34.12 does not work with my lab. If you pull on the leash arrow goes almost immediate submissive. Tail goes down and he searches pshysical contact by laying down at your feet.
    My lab does not react at all if I pull on the leash with the force you've showed. He keeps lunging at the other dog and barks. Although I'm sure it also arousal because once I let hem go to the other dog he just smells wagging his tail.
    But the correction has zero effect on him even if I pull even harder???

      That suppression you see in Arrow’s body language is only partially due to the physical pressure, it’s mostly due to the social pressure.
      I’m leveraging the relationship I built with him up to that point - all the structure, the play, the obedience, the fun, the rules, the boundaries. I am his world.
      That's why when I punish the behavior, I use my emotions to show him that I'm upset, and it actually MEANS something to him. It feels horrendous to him because I am his entire world.
      That's why we don't just start trying to punish away the reactivity on day 1^ You have to have a strong foundation with the dog.
      (that said, if your dog doesn't gaf about the prong at all, there are other tools we use to physically punish the behavior, but that's not for youtube)

      @hamiltondogtraining hi, thanks for The explanation,
      I believe I've got a good relationship with my dog. I'm the only one who plays with him gives him food and freedom. He listens relatively good. But is still a young dog 1.5 years old.
      I don't have a prong collar. That's not allowed or for sale in my country {belgium}.I only have a normal collar or slip lead /chain. But even that chain has no effect. He would choke himself to get to that other dog.
      What do you mean not for UA-cam?

    I have a nuanced question! I have got to the stage where my dog doesn't react on lead and ignores dogs. I followed all your videos and you've changed the game for me and my dog ❤
    However...
    On rare occasions when I can't control other peoples off lead dogs (male dogs), if they greet my dog, mine reacts intensely. But only on the greet.
    My question is, is it realistic I can fix this or is it entirely about management for the rest of my dogs life?
    Im from the UK and things are a little different here, we could be in the country side and a dog could dart over from 100s of meters away. After your tips from previous videos I can have hin under complete control but not other dogs of course. It's a conundrum!
    If it helps, my dog is a male Mali x pitball which I feel is a factor but not an excuse of course.

    5:20 is this the first step for any dog age? I'll get my puppy in two weeks, so as soon as she gets in, instead of showing off the house I should keep her in her crate? Or should I do other developments since It's a puppy? Then when should I start with the crate? after 5, 8 months, a year?

    • @BaughbeSauce
      @BaughbeSauce День тому

      Yes, this is a great way to start off with a puppy. This is essentially how I started with my pup, but it got a wrench thrown in it. 😅 turns out she has hip dysplasia that we discovered early on. So no fetch, no running, no tugging. It was hard to teach her how to play and have good, healthy fun when she wasn't allowed to do really ANYTHING. 🙄 we do nose work, hide and seek, and training games. Hard to get your dog super amped about play when you had to tell her no to anything fast-paced or exciting for most of her puppyhood.
      Through physical therapy and supplementation, her hip dysplasia has been downgraded significantly. So at least it's paying off.

I'll do the muzzle if I have to. Ur content helps so much! Thanks.

    Correcting the reactivity...
    Leash pops so far have not been effective for my dog. Even using my leg to bump her only seems to make it worse.
    I get the feeling that I'm not strong enough to make the correction get through to her, because she doesn't snap out of it until the threat is gone.
    Could be because of the collar (flat, martingale), and the placement (too far down on the neck).
    Question...if you have an extremely fearful dog, that appears to still be afraid of what you might do (trust issue?), and apply an appropriate correction, are you going to make the dog even more afraid of you?
    Is it ok for there to be some level of fear, or is their reaction (cowering after a correction), not an actual "fear" response, but a "respect" response?
    So many questions, because I did not raise this dog, and have never dealt with a fearful dog.

    • @Southerngrl
      @Southerngrl 2 місяці тому +1

      Full disclosure I am not a dog trainer nor a professional. Sounds like u need a herm sprenger prong collar which does need to be fitted high on the neck. He has a video on reactivity its rly good.
      If the dog was abused yes you can get them to be more fearful by harsh corrections. Some dogs are soft-hearted. What I did was try to research the breed. Then check their physical body language before they react. Are their ears back, front legs and back tense, any teeth or growling? In my experience with rescues its important to slowly build the bond. It was advised to me I cld hand feed their chow. That's def only if you have no doubt they will bite or resource guard. It worked to build a bond with mine. Its about building trust, and confidence. If on leash is the prob walk them on leash in the yard, with the prong. Work on the basics and nvr forget teach leave it and stay. Both can save u and the dog…don't get too frustrated bc dogs can only feel energy❤️

    • @fallbrkgrl
      @fallbrkgrl 2 місяці тому

      @Southerngrl thank you for your help, and suggestions.
      I did research a lot of things prior to adopting (especially focused on training methods, and dog behavior again, as I haven't had to train a dog in years. Her breed, GSD, etc. Unfortunately did not find Miles until recently). Yet I was still not prepared for what I would ultimately face with this dog, or rehabilitation of shelter dogs in general.
      I know that I've probably made a million mistakes. I also know that they can be undone.
      Tried the hand feeding. She is very reluctant to take from my hand, and is more comfortable with me putting in the floor. After a year, I am still struggling to get her to even eat her food. I even make homemade gravy. On occasion, I give her raw beef bones, just to occupy her mind, and there have been times where she has actually walked away from it. However, I eventually did get her to start eating them.
      Unfortunately, now my confidence level is pretty low. Unless I can manage to make the changes within myself on my own, I am going to need a trainer actually there with me to work on building my confidence back up, and strategies for keeping everyone safe while we work through her fear aggression.
      At some point I had run across information that said prong collars, and e-collars on fearful dogs was not a good idea.
      I now know that with the proper introduction, and conditioning, you can use them.
      I'll be reviewing the video here to see if I should attempt it myself (prong, not e-collar). Not sure if it's a good idea, as I've tried muzzle training (from an online course with Robert Cabral), and it hasn't gone well. Sort of getting comfortable with it in the house, outside she completely shuts down.
      She is just so fearful. In the morning, I'm prone to getting very strong sneezing fits, and it apparently scares her to the point where she will run to get my 80 year old mom, and try to get her to go with her to where I am, to help (I'm assuming)?
      It's the craziest thing.

    When my 8-month old Golden sees another dog in the park from a distance, he doesn't bark, he doesn't lunge forward. He just stops right in his tracks and looks at the other dog. When this happens, he refuses to move forward. Tugging and pulling him just makes him more glued to the ground. So I would just wait it out until he decides to move forward, which is usually when the other dog moves away, or if it approaches us at which point my dog would start getting animated and try to play with the other dog. I want to maintain control over him in that situation so that he is not transfixed at the other dog and stops listening to me.

    We have a rescue Belgian Malinois who is currently 10 months old and needs training. If I go through the steps of your course and do the work to train her, will our dog obey my husband equally even though he hasn’t done the training with her?
    From start to finish of your course with past customers and their dogs, how long does it take to work your way through the course?

      Loose leash walking on a long lead gives your dog some freedom. I'm in the UK and find that plenty. There's usually also fenced in/enclosed private areas where your dog is allowed off leash, but you may need to travel.
      If you've gotten to the point where your dog can heel/respond to commands off leash consistently and around distractions (like Arrow towards the end), that counts as "effective control", which I believe falls within leash laws.

    I absolutely love these videos, but I seem to keep running into an issue. The use of prong collars, and e collars. I myself am not against them, but they’re illegal where I live. I’m not too worried about an alternative for an e collars, since having a dog off leash here is also illegal, and I absolutely refuse to go to a dog park. So I guess I’ll just get to the point here, if anyone had any ideas on the matter. Are there any good options that are akin to prong collars? Of course I’ll be doing my own research, but suggestions would be much appreciated.
