Investigating an Engine Big End Knock in a Toyota 1MZ-FE V6 (EPIC Feature Length Episode)

  • About two months ago, I was returning from a day trip to Brisbane (around 5 hour round trip) when, just outside of town, I heard a knocking noise coming from the engine.
    I'd been here before, exactly the same thing happened around 5 years ago in my current cars predecessor, the exact same model (it was even the exact same colour, some of the panels on this car are from the other car but, that's a story for another day). Again, I was returning from a long day trip when the knocking started, only a few months after buying the car.
    Now, because I'm so attached to the car (& poor financial circumstances), I can't simply junk it, I need to fix it so, in this episode, I'll be delving into the dark recesses of the bottom end of my first generation Toyota Avalon's 1MZ-FE engine to investigate the issue &, with a bit of luck, solve it...

    Wow, I've got exactly the same car, same colour, right down to the paint falling off in the same places. Same tools even. Really interesting to see what's involved in this job, especially those two small bolts underneath that cover which I wouldn't have known they were there. Thanks for doing the hard yards for the rest of us. And going to the trouble of videoing it as well. You're a champion. Thanks.

      I went to write a comment to thank the big fella for doing the hard yards first, but this one sums it up perfectly. 💪

    Lucky this engine doesn't have the upper oil pan also being the main bearing ladder frame like the 1ZZ-FE.

    Pretty cool to see how it works, I have the same engine, but mine is so far not making any funny noises, so I'm glad, but good to know what it could be.

    I have the same engine with bad lifter noise, I can see that the previous owner did a bad job with oil changes. I am thinking of removing the bottom and cleaning it to improve oil pressure to the top. What do you think? It is a sludged engine.

    • @PopllFixit
      @PopllFixit  3 роки тому +2

      This is a case of "you're damned if you do & you're damned if you don't. Depending on how sludged it is, you could do more damage by cleaning it or it could improve the engine &, maybe, find a little lost hp; it's a complete gamble.
      I have heard (& seen), the main area that will sludge is the rear head, yep, the one near the firewall under the intake. Because the engine sits at a backward tilt, if there's sludge anywhere, it'll be there.
      Good luck & thanks for watching...

    I got a 2000 sienna with 222k miles. The slight knock started existing after i raced it one day. Full gas acceleration 0-60

      I noticed a slight crank knock 1800-2700rpm under light acceleration ,,, i went agead and noticed the other day when i pushed it to 100% it had dirty oil a year old. And pike 5k miles on oil

      I think i got a worn bearing now,,, even though its still sort of otherwise reliable,,, i notice a knock every once in a while. I need to do this fix before i ruin it

    • @PopllFixit

      A combination of old oil & high RPM will do it; as oil "wears" it gets thinner so, it doesn't do its job as well as it should, combine that with high RPM & the oil can't be circulated quick enough, creating an oil starvation issue...
      As you probably heard, my issue was LACK OF oil but, the end result is the same...
      Indeed, fix it before more damage is done & remember to go easy on it for around 500 miles after...

    Someone likes arpeggios \mL, my 99 Avalon sent a piston through the oil pan, so junkyard pull inbound.

    • @PopllFixit
      @PopllFixit  2 роки тому

      If you look through the comments, you'll see I said the same thing. The three key words here are "with regular maintenance"! From memory, I think I said I neglected regular maintenance & then paid the ultimate price for my negligence...
