Shovel [amzn.to/32WEu3V]
Masonry drill [amzn.to/3084USN]
Shopping List:
Rain Chain [amzn.to/2OcGp0c]
Pot [amzn.to/2M5wFlE]
3/4 inch stone [amzn.to/31CvJvN]
Decorative river stones [amzn.to/34OsiUK]
Steps:
1. Decide where the rain chain will be hung and install a downspout outlet in the gutter in the desired location.
2. Dig a hole slightly wider than the width of your pot and at least 6” deep directly underneath the downspout outlet.
3. Fill the hole with the 3/4 inch stone.
4. Flip the pot upside down and drill a few drainage holes with a masonry drill.
5. Put the pot in place on top of the hole filled with stone.
6. Next, hang the rain chain. Most rain chains usually come with specific installation instructions. It should hook right into the downspout outlet.
7. Once the rain chain in hung, put the chain in the pot and fill the pot about three-quarters of the way with the 3/4 inch stone.
8. Fill the pot the rest of the way with the river stones. Use whatever is left over to cover the base underneath the pot as well.

UA-cam recommendations: you ever heard of a rain chain?
Facts
Lmao I loved it!
Recommended taught me today
...goes to buy stock in rain chain.
what exactly is its purpose
I love that they used the existing pot - simply putting in holes, and then adding the stones. Such a resourceful idea but simple, and a gorgeous outcome! Love the rain chain, and really enjoy This Old House.
Who ever put that drain in the gutter didn't skimp on the sealant. There's going to have to be a half inch of water in the gutter before it will even be high enough to go over the glob.
Jonathan Castaneda No. The gutter and the outlet (the piece inside the gutter with all the sealant around it) shown here is aluminum. It can hold water and it won't corrode.
Old fashioned box gutters (gutters that are actually built into the roof) with terne steel could rust. Those have to be periodically painted inside to help protect the steel. Generally, it's not good to have obstructions like that for the sake of proper flow.
The bigger the gob, the better the job.
Kevin Adrian LMFAO
I got that from AVE. One of his many sayings.
I particularly enjoy how they were like, 'they just happen to put the hole there, at such an ambiguous spot.' Umhum...
I'm 32, been watching this old house since Steve Thomas took over. (Maybe I watched 1 season with Bob Vila). You guys raised me on Saturday evenings from 4-6pm on PBS with all those DIY shows...
I'm glad Roger is taking a step back from the show a little bit and taking more care of himself this upcoming 41st season. I wish nothing but the best for you. Take care.
same. an the best feeling is looking at other people the same age an knowing.. None of them have any skill. Nore an idea how to build or maintain anything
Roger, I have learned a lot from you over the past decades. I hope you slow it down a notch and appreciate the good things in life that you deserve. Take care of yourself first and foremost. You lead well over the years and now maybe to start hand that torch off to someone else. God bless you and your family. Thanks Roger!!
Hope your doing better Roger! Thanks for all the tips over the years.
Wow ive been looking for a solution like this for a long time. Have a downspout over concrete and need to either collect the rain or get it out to soil. But that requires something to hold the downspout. This is perfect!! Straight down into a rain barrel or something.
Sad to see these guys get older. Means I am too lol. Great job though. Looked great.
Chad Baxter Dude seriously. I've been watching them since I was 6 I am now 25. Lol
Steve Rogers back when I didn't have cable and was bored
Lol yeah iam 29 and these guys seemed old back then lol
@@jamesavery6671 You're going to blink and be 49 like me. It flies brother.
@@steverogers4612 I've never seen em till today. Good video tho
Interesting design. Glad Roger also showed us how it worked.
Hope Roger is doing ok, he looks like he lost some pep in his step.
Eschaton 28 I was thinking the same. His hand movement was a bit lethargic. Hope he's good. Love watching and learning from these guys.
That's what happens when you do a career's worth of back-breaking labor.
Eschaton 28 yea he's looking quite a bit slower than normal
Been watching these videos for a while. He's been like this for a few months now. Not sure if it's age, or something medical. He has a ton more 'wobble' in his voice in this one then any other I've watched.
FAULTatHANDS besides the voice, my spider senses pricked up around the 3:40 mark when he's trying to move the mulch around. Seemed like his hands were a bit slow in reaction time. Hope is just age and nothing medical.
I love TOH. They're always find new and interesting things like tools and materials to share.
Wow, that turned out pretty! Like a water decoration. I've loved "This Old House", from the beginning, have grown old with you. (Sigh)
I've watched you guy's as a kid and I still love you all!!
These actually do work. I have used them on the house and the garage. One fix I did, if the chain isn't long enough to go into the pot, simply attache a smaller section of regular chain to the bottom, set that into the pot or bucket. I use a bucket with a drip irrigation hose attached so water collects and then gets dispersed into the planter, great for summer when the rain is sporadic. For winter it has a dual spigot, I simply open the second spigot for winter when the rains are more prolonged.
That's a great looking solution. Her porch area looks gorgeous!
I’ve never heard of such a thing, cool concept.
Smart idea. I can see this being useful in limited circumstances
I think the chain is a beautiful alternative to gutter drains
Great idea Roger! Not to be biased, but I tend to like Roger's projects because they tend to heavy duty or a job that you use your brain, your hands and you are outside working with mother nature! Thanks again.
Aaaaaand the Tweekers got it the second night.
Oh my... I love this rain chain thingy😍
Rain chain. Omg. This is beautiful.
I have never heard of such a thing - Roger is the man
Roger has some of the best segments on the show
I've never heard of a rain chain before. This is so cool.
Can a rain chain stay during northern NY Winter?
Loved this video.Thank you very much from a born and bred New Englander, now in rainy nw fla.😊
Looks like the rain still splatters onto the steps. maybe one of the cup-design rain chains would contain the stream better. Edit: I see they address this at the end.
And instead of mulch that looks like compost that will still spatter. Heavier bark mulch might work better against the house.
The watering can rain chain is beautiful :)
Bet that rain chain makes some mammoth icicles in the winter 🥶
It sure does...but I have found that it is better to leave the formation intact so it retains its' integrity. Otherwise it becomes a wind swinging mass of free moving weight.
Why? Since the porch roof isn't heated snow melt and refreeze isn't an issue.
As a kid I never noticed how awkward these interactions were
Same
Just noticed that as well guess I was not in tune with that sort of thing as a a kid.
The lady said her lines too fast like she should have waited two seconds before saying something for it to seem natural
I love Roger Cook!!!!
Thanks, very helpful, my Wife wants a rain chain
This is a must-do, Learned something new!!!
Moving to Arizona and saw these chains on many home, never knew their purpose I thought they were just decorative.
Works even better if the chain hangs out the end of a gutter with no end cap. Regular old 1/4" or so galv chain works too
His voice/accent reminds me of Cliff from Cheers 😄 Pretty rain chain.
Learn something new everyday, thanks.
The riverstone sound satisfying
And now the spatter in on the porch. Great!
The splatter comes from the downspout pipe, dripping around the circular edge. To solve this, I used a 45 degree angle pipe. Thus all the water is directed to the chain. No more splash.
OldProVidios splattah
Oh wow that looks really nice.
I love that chain. I need to try that.
Gotta luv seeing Roger,
love the paint color
Yeah, I would love to know the color.
Roger, has anyone ever told you that you are a landscape genius?
Thanks yt for the recommendation. I learned something new.
Such a underated channel!
Keep em coming, he says to the lady wearing a skirt SHOVELING MULCH!! Complete gangster!
Lol I noticed that too 😄
Beautiful decor idea
I love him heard he's been sick hope all is well.
An absolute very good idea🙂
Roger you are great buddy and still looking good.😃
Love this ! Great solution
What does this guy have against letter R.
Daniel Anderson he’s from Maine. They don’t like Rs lol
@@appleid7598 ditto Massachusetts.
Southern Maine.
Tee k 😂
P West 😂
“Guhta”. Gotta love that Boston accent.
Being from Maine, I can tell you that is not a Boston accent.
@@randallissimo You guhta admit theyas overlap.
Nicely done, as usual.
My boy about to get out of prison, I might get him some rain chains to make him feel at home.
He can steal them for copper value 😁 ?
Word up!
More like PTSD chains.
LOL-I like the way you refer to this thing like it's a standard accessory in wide use. The precious metal touch makes this thing gaudy and out of place for the house. Surprised the homeowner bought it.
Oh my. I love this.
SO PRETTY OMG!
If you live where it freezes then this is a great way to tear your gutter apart.
I made a chain exactly like that for my parents house and I was 19.
Last year when I saw the movie wolverine ? For the first time the new one where this Chinese house had a water chain and I thought how badass it looked.
And it goes good with our house Cuz we have rusted fences and alot of greens and chains and a same exact roof in front of our door so I had the idea for it because there wasnt space to add the gutter pipe either no walls and the chimney in the way so I bought some chain and made one exactly like this with chipped rocks and pebbles and it worked perfect.
Only bad thing that happened was a squirrel tried climbing it and got his tail stuck.
Chad Baxter: I agree. I just turned 50 and I am sure I've been watching since I was a teen.
Thanks Roger, it’s been good.
It looks like early on-set Parkinson's... My Co worker has it and it looks exactly like Rogers movements... There is DBS which my Co worker had it down... He was a different person after he had the surgery... Not a cure but it brings back some quality of life
Miss Roger on ask this old house. Wish he'd come back
Excellent job good idea
excellent idea
god bless your soul roger
That’s really awesome 😎
Thanks, this is exactly what I need by my porch.
4:02 "And now it's time for the acid test" 😎
Is this available worldwide like Australia? I have used a friends help and he installed a chain and it worked fine but I have sold that house but remember it all working beautifully. Richard
NICE JOB, HOPE ROGERS OK .....
It's not age or the work, it's most definitely a condition. He's got the healthiest job of the bunch, he's moving around and doing a variety of work out in the open.
Backbreaking labor. It destroys your body. There is a fine line between being active being good before it becomes bad for you again.
he has parkinsons I believe
Hoping Roger is OK. This seems ... rough.
The end of the video in the shop he seem normal, maybe he was under the weather that day.
I was thinking the same thing :(
Thinking the same thing.
Look all the way at the very end when the outdo starts. He wobbles and seems unhealthy and lost his color
applebetrippin aw
Interesting! I have never seen this rain chain. Cheers
Andrea's Workshop it's Japanese. Most traditional homes in Japan have them.
Awesome I WANT one!
Basic Instinct meets a home improvements.
Brilliant.
Can this also be installed by a front concrete steps, close to the house that has a basement? We get a ton of water off our roof into this one cutter and downspout.
Would have liked to see cedar mulch with that color of paint 👍
Roger is savage making her dig lol
Another watah device, nice!
good idea.
I love how he makes the lady do all the work...
a nice touch
That’s a fancy little solution
I turned 30 this year.. here i am , genuinely interested in this stuff
Yup. And gardening. Not sure when I became my parents.
I'm glad. Maturation matters.
Ok. That was cool.
Wouldn't you want the water to run away from the house's foundation?
Corey Lambrecht I clicked on the video because I've never heard of a "rain chain". I was thinking it was more for a garden as decoration - but to actually see it used as a gutter downspout is ridiculous. Sucks for the lady homeowner when she starts getting moisture in the basement.
I don't think the amount of water he was spraying up there was realistic for such a small section of roof. It would have to rain pretty hard for this ever to be a problem, IMO.
jej3451 i guess that makes sense. Not a lot of real estate in that section of the porch.
Aircooled Tech I did a similar thing at my house but I trenched in a dain tile away from the house and I used that water bucket style at the end
Aircooled Tech in Japan all traditional houses use rain chains instead of down pipes. But I would presume that they have the correct drainage beneath the chain. Most look similar to this though. I presume it's an ancient Japanese invention.
How do these work in winter when covered in ice? It seems the weight would either pull it down or pull the gutter right off the house.
i only watch these videos for roger!
That's a wicked gutta
Look at all that cork in that brand spankin new gutter.. making a well for the water..
Great !
That's cool af
That's cool
Son: "Uh...Yeah...I found this old pot being used as a rain catch in my mom's old house and I was wondering what it was worth?"
Appraiser: "Well, this is from an old Incan burial site and it would be worth $10,000 if these holes weren't drilled in it."
Perfect pot for a mosquito colony. Great job
