    This project was a ton of fun for me to brainstorm and figure out! Just doing a simple rain chain install didn't seem like it'd be cool enough to make a video of, so I took it to the next level and added a solar fountain pump to the inside so that it functions great as a downspout/drainage while it's raining and a beautiful, cool sounding water feature when it isn't raining! Depending on where/if you put an overflow valve in, it can also act as a little pond or bird bath too!!

    Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

    The point is to get water away from foundation and you made it splash everywhere now. Plus plywood and water??

    • @OhNoItsFelix
      @OhNoItsFelix 28 днів тому +13

      Not only that but the shallow 1ft rock base is no where near enough to disperse the water from the roof during an actual rainstorm. You can absolutely expect water to pool up.

      Yeah. These things don't work at all. In Australia, a lot of Councils are banning it. They don't work with heavy rains and even more so when there are winds.

      A 2" downspout eventually going down to a 3/8 drill hole pointed at the house....

  • @RyanRij
    @RyanRij 28 днів тому +48

    That's cool, but I think it's going to be inadequate during a heavy rain storm. Would be better to move that water away from the foundation.

      Yea I have a huge rain barrel that fills really quickly during just a moderate rain shower. I imagine this small planter would fill up in a matter of minutes and then the overflow is directed towards the house. I think it'll be a swampy mess

    A rain chain that throws water everywhere, submerged plywood that's going to rot away in short order, and big swamp near the foundation? This project deserves the "Super Pro!" moniker that's usually reserved for his worst ideas!

  • @bradmaas6875
    @bradmaas6875 28 днів тому +23

    And the plywood will rot, and if it's not exterior grade, the glue for laminating won't last long either.

    Wouldn't having plywood with water just make it so that you have to remove all of the rock just to fix it when the wood gives out?

    I recommend copying what Rain barrels have and cut a bigger drain hole, add a black sump hose and let it drain to the grass.

    Hey mike! I think its better without the fountain. Now you are going to have lots of standing water in the ceramic planter. What happens when the water gets old. Musty and moldy.

    Different, but good idea in that circumstance. But, you didn't wrap the wood in a waterproof material so it won't rot in no time and have to replace. Over and over? You could have used a plastic, stainless, or resin material for the disc insert versus the wood as well. Just sayin'.

    We got gutters put in and I had to get this project done before more rain came in this spring! I didn't want to make too simple of a video, so I hope the addition of the solar fountain is a fun idea, I looked everywhere on the internet and couldn't find it done before!! More Interior room renovation videos coming soon!! 😁

    Luckily your area doesn't get huge amounts of rain fall. In the upper midwest we can get 3inches in a week causing tremendous amounts of flooding.

    No masonry to support the chain drain, instead of plywood? Looks great, but I’m concerned about longevity (and splashing on the foundation)

  • @saulgoodman2018
    @saulgoodman2018 5 днів тому

    Rain chains are not to replace a downspout. They are mainly for decoration.
    Like others say, that plywood will rot. It also supposed to take water away from the house, not towards it.

  • @c.a.g.1977
    @c.a.g.1977 27 днів тому +2

    Great idea, Mike!
    I don't know if the chain is supposed to splash like this. Saw one that was made of thick brass/copper chain links. They turned green like those old statues, which looked pretty awesome! Even during heavy rain the water just trickled down those chain links, maybe because the thickness of the chain links provided more surface area for the water to drain down from.

    Hello everyone, it looks like it's not bad, but the water splashes in all directions from above, the water stays at the foundation and spreads the dirt, and it will always be there because of the fountain. It is probably better to remove all this and move it to the corner of the house and make a regular drain, and also a drainage system around the house, otherwise, due to the fact that there is a lot of moisture, mold can go into the house. In short, it is beautiful, but not very functional.

    Rain chain looks decent but a funnel at the top would reduce the excess splash at the top. The fountain makes zero sense.

    This is scraping the content barrel. Honestly theres no way this will be functional for all the reasons stated in other comments, but this is going to work for about 5 minutes. Saturated plywood held onto the pot with hot glue?
    I've been watching your content for a long time, but the renovation stuff is so hit and miss, and its all more clickbaity than ever.
