  • Elizabeth I's foreign policy culminated in the Spanish Armada in 1588. Nevertheless, there was more to her foreign policy. Her early years saw the Treaty of Câteau-Cambrèsis in 1559, followed by Elizabeth's military action within Scotland (to help the Protestants lords of the Congregation) and military action in France (to rally with the Huguenots in the French Wars of Religion). The focus then turned to Spain where the relationships continued to deteriorate. This was a blend of John Hawkins and Francis Drake in the Caribbean (attempting to break the Spanish monopoly) and English intervention in the Netherlands and the Dutch Revolt. This led the the Anglo-Spanish War 1585, which culminated in the Spanish Armada of 1588.
