    It's been a while since I lived in Wilmington but from my experience I would say things to prepare for is that it's a 'small' place but with a lot of traffic if you're moving here from a big city. And it's a beach/island culture (with subtropical temperatures) which means it's somewhat isolated in terms of culture and most of the lifestyle is bar and beach related. Also if you're older than 23 but younger than your mid 40's moving here (especially without a family) you may find it limiting after so many months of living here. The local 'southern' people here are awesome and friendly but meeting new people is limited 'in my opinion' if you're late 20's to 40'ish. I moved here from Utah so it was incredibly 'freeing' coming from a very bureaucratic and religious society. I really felt like I could be more 'outgoing' and more like myself living in Wilmington. I would also recommend you have a 'good paying' job lined up before you move here because it's a pretty unforgiving place if you don't have that but locals can really be a helpful bunch if you need help moving a couch or fixing your car, things like that.

    I grew up in Wilmington but haven’t lived there in over 30 years. I went to San Diego on my honeymoon and yes, I think it’s valid to draw parallels between the two, though San Diego is on a much larger scale.
    Let me give you the native’s perspective.
    Wilmington has been transforming and re-inventing itself for as long as it’s been around. It’s had kind of a hippy/artsy vibe for as long as I can remember, but it’s cool factor has increased exponentially since I was a kid. Many things have contributed to that, but I think one of the biggest factors is the symbiotic relationship in popularity between the city and UNCW. The college has long been a party school, and the downtown party scene only helps with that.
    You touched on the crime. It was worse back in the day when downtown was dangerous, but it’s still something to be aware of. As with any other city, you have to keep your wits about you and practice common sense.
    You didn’t get into the cost of living. For the average middle class family Wilmington is expensive. Keep in mind that not everybody has come from California or the northeast where they sold their modest home for several hundred thousand dollars and can afford a nice home in Porters Neck and other desirable areas. The cost of living is not commensurate with the prevailing wages, which is mainly in the service industry (there’s very little science and tech). The tony homes and shopping are geared towards people with money.

      Gregory, Thank you so much for this perspective on Wilmington! I readily admit reality is based off perspective, and in saying that the same area can be many different things to different folks. I love talking to people that are native to an area it always is a much more in depth view of how things have changed and progressed or regressed depending on outlook.
      Where do you call home these days?

      Jake & Lexi Wyer I have lived in San Antonio for close to four years now, having relocated from New Jersey where I lived for 18 years. It’s amazing to me how much Wilmington has grown since I left in 1987. I grew up in Porters Neck and at that time there wasn’t much out there, but now with all the business and residential development I hardly recognize it.
      I’d be happy to correspond and tell you the changes I have seen.

      @@brucegoolsby1470 Its been super positive for us. It did take awhile to find "our" people but i feel like that is going to be true with any move. Cost of living is amazing, and Wilmington is very much a melting pot so it has a pretty liberal vibe compared to a lot of southern cities, the humidity and bugs do take a bit to get used to and gets pretty bad for a few months of the year. Helps being coastal so you can always escape to the beach or boat on the hot days.

    I'm from the SF Bay Area and have also lived in Southern CA so love hearing about your experience. Currently living in Philadelphia and exploring the options of moving out of the city. The cost of living was a big reason we decided to originally move to Wilmington.
      Really the only really bad areas as far as crime and not safe are some of the parts of the Downtown. It is still in a transition mode. If you are wanting to be in this area stay North of Wooster St and pretty much South of Walnut St closer to the Cape Fear River is nicer typically.
      Let us know if you want to be more rural, near the coast, or close to nightlife etc and we can help guide you a bit more on where you might want to take a look!

      As far as good schools in the area the best elementary schools are probably Ogden, Parsley, Wrightsville Beach and Topsail. The best high schools are Hoggard and Topsail and maybe in third place Laney High. Try to stay away from the schools located in the historic down town area such as New Hanover High School, Snipes elementary, sunset park elementary.

      The job market in Wilmington is notoriously a bit tough. There are a lot of tourism type jobs and the normal blue collar jobs that are in every town such as mechanics etc. also lots of business opportunities for the entrepreneurial inclined. But large corporation jobs are pretty few and far between.
      That being said If you can find a good mid level paying job here a family can live very comfortably due to the relatively low cost of living.

    Living in North County San Diego, looking to relocate and have been drawn to this area. Like you, I have kids and have been researching school districts. Some areas have good elementary schools but terrible high schools, is that the norm? Looking more outside the downtown area, East of Ogden any good? Any neighborhoods south near the river worth investigating? Big SoCal to Wilmington transition I've noticed lately. Thanks.

      Hey Eric! Always good to hear from folks in San Diego! Thanks for watching the video! By the sounds of it you have been doing your research on the area. Yes it is a bit difficult to find areas that have great school districts from elementary up here, however there are a few. The best district from elementary up in Wilmington is arguably the Hoggard school district which services the 28409 zip code and some additional areas. Hampstead is also a great option with the Top Sail school district. The area east of Ogden is collectively called Bay Shores and has one of the top rated elementary schools in Ogden Elementary, however the High school is Laney which is probably middle of the road with mixed reviews but is probably 3-4 stars out of 5 on most sites (Michael Jordan's high school so the sports programs and what not are highly subsidized by him).
      There has been a lot of SoCal folk relocating here lately. Its pretty crazy to see the lifestyle you can afford and still live right next to the coast. Feel free to give me a call if you want to chat sometime and I can maybe help answer any questions you might have and maybe share our experience (910)216-4388.

      We have actually been helping several families this year move from out of state with aging parents some have even opted to live in large homes under the same roof. There are a couple factors that would help guide which areas we would recommend.
      Is having a single story construction important? Do you have children that would be attending public school? Is proximity to anything in particular important such as Beach, Airport, Golf Courses, Downtown, Restaurants etc?

It doesn't bother us as much anymore, but I would say the temp during summer doesn't get any higher than SoCal but feels wet from about June to Sept. We quickly learned cotton is not your friend during the summer here, and dry wick breathable clothes make all the difference. Most of the town here escapes to the beach during the really hot days even for a quick trip after work on weekdays which is pretty nice!

    • @livinginwilmington2783
      @livinginwilmington2783  4 роки тому

      That is going to come down to some personal preferences. The most obvious difference is Wilmington is Coastal so there is the beach and boating aspect to Wilmington that Fayetteville does not have. Fayetteville is a big military area with Fort Bragg being located there and I have found a lot of people who live there visit Wilmington in summer months for vacation and beach time. If you think you might have interest in both I would recommend taking a look at both, they are located close enough you could see both on the same trip with about an hour car ride. Let us know if you need some more info!

    • @livinginwilmington2783

      It takes a little bit to get a new group of fiends anywhere, but Wilmington is very much a town of transplants from all over just like SD with a college and military present so there a tons of events and social societies here in town that really are facilitated to meeting people. I would recommend if you do make the move to locate within Wilmington and not in one of the outlaying communities such as Leland and Hampstead to help facilitate meeting new people. Let us know if you make a trip out and we would be happy to point you in the right directions!

      I moved here when I was 30 and I wish I had been college age or over 50. Not a lot of easy ways to make long term friends here unless you move with a partner or family if you're 30. If you're church going that's different. I found that younger people don't always stick around in Wilmington because there is no grad school and jobs are not abundant. I even contacted my old employer there recently and they haven't hired anyone in my position in over 18 months. Virtually every friend I had there was not originally from Wilmington and eventually relocated elsewhere, some for better job promotions in bigger cities. This is why I never considered it necessarily a great place to build a strong 'community' if you're younger.

    Thank you for creating this video. I am looking at moving to either Cary or Wilmington. So far I’ve only been able to do online research since my original plan to visit next week has been postponed due to COVID-19. Do you have any suggestions for neighborhoods for young families? As you both mentioned in the video, it’s important to me that we live in a great school district. I am also worried about flood zones due to the proximity to the water. We are moving from Mililani Mauka on Oahu, Hawaii which is safe, great public schools & has a town association, and its central location really drives up the home value too. I’m looking for an area that is similar. I appreciate you both for taking the time to share information.

      HI Lauren! Thats exciting my brother and sister in law actually live on Oahu! Thank you for watching our UA-cam Channel! My suggestion would be to look at the neighborhoods along Masonboro Loop and Greenville Loop in Wilmington. This area is central and there are some very nice neighborhood options and a lot of this area is in the 28409 zip which mostly is in the top rated Hoggard School District. Some of the neighborhoods to look at would be Masonboro Forrest, Tarin Woods, Windward Oaks, Tyndal to name a few. There is a big range in price points along this section so if you would like a little more detail feel free to email us at jake@wilmingtonnchomes.com. Most of this area is not in flood zones however a quick address search on Fema.gov will show you exactly. Hope this helps!

      Hi Renee, that might be a tight budget for a 2 bedroom in Wilmington city limits. The rental market here is a bit crazy at the moment with prices on the rise. For a decent 2 bedroom in Wilmington the rent starts at around $1200. There are some options just outside of Wilmington such as Leland which is just a few minutes to downtown wilmington. We have a video that talks a bit about Leland on our channel.

Onslow County School district is pretty good I believe they tend to score in the upper mid range. If you aren't completely set on Holy Ridge and school district is important, you might want to look a little further to the south at Hampstead and the Top Sail School District.

    My fiance and I are planning on moving to NC next Spring. We either want to be about a hour or so away from the beach. We havent gotten time to explore NC. We only have been to NC one time. We went to Topsial Island. 2017 was MY first time at a beach. I love how the Beach keeps you busy! No boredom! We wont be able to buy a house right away as we have to establish jobs for a year to get approved for a home. Would you be able help us with some tips to look for House Rentals in some cities close to the Beach? We do have an 80 pound dog. I know you said it's hard to find a place that allow pets... Ash Ann The beach life is addicting that is for sure!
      it is a really competitive rental market here in Wilmington. Rental agencies here really are working for the owners and not the renters unlike other areas of the country. I would recommend using the online sites such as HotPads.com and even Craigslist to find a good single family home for rent and then contact the agency or owner that represents the property. All rental agencies will market their inventory on all these public sites.

    • @livinginwilmington2783
      @livinginwilmington2783  4 роки тому +1

      There is a Hurricane season every year in the atlantic as I'm sure you already know. Most years there is nothing major to worry about just hurricanes that dwindle down to tropical storms by the time they get close to land. The major recent hurricane in Wilmington was Hurricane Flo which was a direct hit and very slow moving (all over the news). It is what many of the experts are calling a once in 50 yr storm. It was a good test of the area..... there was flooding in some areas and a lot of trees came down causing damage.
      We are not a huge fan of Hurricane season but with proper set up such as whole house generator, good insurance, and purchasing a home that is not in a high risk flood zone and built at proper elevation it is usually not a big issue. The weather channel really makes it all look much much worse than in real life. Same could be said about other parts of the country....snowstorms in the north and earth quakes & wildfires in the west. Unfortunately I guess its pick your poison when it comes these types of naturally occurring issues.

All of the good jobs and greater selection of jobs are in Raleigh-Durham-Research Triangle and Charlotte. Wilmington is pretty a good smaller town and a slower pace than you would find in Charlotte. UNC-Charlotte is closer to Harrisburg, NC/north Charlotte area so somewhat remote from downtown Charlotte. I'm in Cary but have a 2nd home in Wilmington. I always enjoy my time in Wilmington. The cities directly to the North of Wilmington get progressively more rural and more spread out regarding homes. leaving wilmington and traveling North first would be Castle Hayne which shares the northern boarder with Wilmington. Castle Hayne has overall larger lots than Wilmington and will most likely stay this way for a bit due to most the area not having access to municipal sewer hook ups. there is all your basic needs regarding groceries and basic shopping in the area. I would say it is a mix of nice homes and some manufactured homes in this area. Further North is Burgaw and Rocky point they both have a small shopping downtown areas. overall pretty rural feeling with limited sidewalks and streetlights but a short commute to Wilmington.

    • @livinginwilmington2783
      @livinginwilmington2783  5 років тому +2

      Hey Sara, I think you nailed it when you say "point of view". people from here or have grown up in areas prone to hurricanes will tell you its no big deal. Honestly for the most part most hurricane seasons are pretty mild most downgraded to tropical storms last minute and hyped up on the weather channel. People here usually throw "Hurricane parties" and drink and BBQ and watch the rain come down.
      However there are bad storms like Flo this last Sept. It caused some serious damage the town with flooding and wind damage. Some lost everything and the town pretty much came to a stand still for a couple weeks while power was restored and clean up crews worked around the clock. The interesting thing about Hurricanes that our family was not used to unlike Wildfires and Earthquakes we grew up with you have about a week to prepare if a hurricane might impact the area and you can choose to leave or stay. Most of the time its more time than you need and you drive yourself crazy tracking the storm and buying water and food only to find out it is changing course. All that being said if you pick your home wisely with a good elevation above FEMA flood zones and have proper insurance hurricanes can be less of a scare when they do come around.
      Hope thats helpful?! And let us know if you have other questions!

    I am from a small town called Beulaville, NC ( 1 hour inland from Wilmington). "sweet Beulah Land" is a good song and book to research for you two on NC history....I have family in Wilmington, and allover the east coast counties. I am currently living in Connecticut and after my wedding in Ireland next year, I hope to move back home closer to family with my husband and our two children who are now in elementary school. SO many Yankees have moved into Charlotte and Raleigh areas, that I am not turned onto the idea of moving there. Our dream is to live in the Mountains, but we might need to start off close to family until we get on our feet down south. We would plan on renting for awhile, until we find a home we like in a location in NC we like, and then use our VA Loan to get our home. I used to work on Camp Lejeune and my soon to be husband is a Navy Veteran from Desert Storm and Desert Shield. I grew up in NC for 20 yrs, then moved to MO near ST. Lous, then moved to Connecticut. The locals of MO call their state "Misery".. which shocked me. Not moved back home for over 10 years now. New England and the Midwest are nowhere close to any hospitality in NC. You are right that Southern hospitality is existent in NC. I miss it terribly. I want my children to grow up around good morals and understand that family comes first, not money. Role models up North are not fitting that role. Too much drama with liability paranoia up here, to where people don't help others. ..... I am surprised you didn't mention the hurricane effects of Wilmington's location. Would you please make a video on what it is like being in Wilmington during hurricane season and any flooding for viewers? .... And would you please tell me more about the school districts incase we do move there???? ... Thanks. IDK how much NC has changed since I left honestly.

      Hi Brandalynn, Thank you for watching & reaching out! That sounds like a beautiful wedding that you have planned next year! I can imagine the landscape and historic venues and churches would lend themselves to a beautiful setting.
      To help shed some light on your question about school districts here in the Wilmington area. There are some large gaps in quality from one to the next and it is a major factor when people with children move here. Some of the best districts are Topsail school district (28443), Ashley (28412), and Hoggard (28409). There are a lot of mid tier ranked schools as well but like a lot of other cities the lower ranked schools are primarily located in the Historic Downtown (28401). Check our channel out we have one video specifically on Hurricanes and one on Flooding here in the Wilmington area. Please reach out with any questions!

I feel there is a pretty decent mix of ages in Wilmington with UNCW being here helps ( might want to look at the area around the college to live if you want to be around people your age). There is For sure a little older retire population in some of the surrounding areas like Leland but it’s not a full blown retirement destination like Palm Springs or Boca Raton... and downtown and Wrightsville has a pretty young crowd that is out on the weekends.

      It really depends on what city you are talking about in North Carolina, but in general there is much less diversity regarding ethnic backgrounds compared to SD. I think you tend to get a little more diverse make up in some of the more populated cities in NC as opposed to the rural country though. Overall it really is White and Black folks making up the vast majority of the population here in Wilmington, NC. The last census I believe the population in Wilmington is around 70% white 20% black and 10% is all other ethnic back grounds with hispanic being about 4-5%.

      Hey Justin,,,, NC native here. If you want to be surrounded by tons of migrated yankees, go to Charlotte. One of the many things that location has going for it is the public transit line. It's really nice. If you want to get more of the NC feel, go to Wilmington or Asheville and drive out to the suburbs or more rural surroundign areas to meet natives. Asheville is closer to the Cherokee Reservation, and not as hippy infested as Charlotte. Wilmington is closer to the beautiful Outer banks and has a boardwalk and nice port with vintage restaurants on the water that have bistro balconies on the 2nd floor that you can romance any southern girl with while watching the sunset. Also, New Bern is visible right across the water. Environmentally Wilmington is closer to hurricanes and flooding due to the river, Charlotte has tornadoes and at times earthquakes, and fires and bad lightning storms and such because it is in the Piedmont region of the state just like Raleigh and Durham are, and Asheville is in the mountains, so you may or may not get snow depending on the year's humidity, but keep in mind that NC is a very wide state with 100 coutnies. It takes about 3 hours to drive from Asheville to Charlotte and about 4 hours to drive from Charlotte to Wilmington WITHOUT ANY TRAFFIC ON THE ROADS. Wilmingtona nd Charlotte both have international airports, but Asheville has a regional airport. More destination locations will be available through Charlotte of course. Many flights from Wilmington stop through Charlotte too. FYI. Wilmington is a beach lifestyle. Charlotte is a metropolitan lifestyle and Asheville is a mountain lifestyle. Be sure to visit both the Smoky Mountains and Blue Ridge Mountains in the West if you go that way. Commutes can be as long as 5 hours from one major city to another when living in the mountains too. Depends your starting point and destination. Also be sure to visit Boone, NC and nearby Blowing Rock, NC. Go to the "Hawk's View" region in that area too and take in the views.... and August is a good month to try and catch the Blue haze that paints the Blue Ridge mountains. Rent a cabin for about 45 dollars a night using airbnb.com. it's worth it. IF ANYONE OFFERS YOU MOUNTAIN BLUEBERRIES DON'T EAT THEM, THAT'S SLANG FOR GOAT TESTICLES. If you go to the mountains, the locals make their own moonshine. In Wilmington, you gotta eat the seafood and tour the historic exhibits. Charlotte is well,,, Charlotte.... a big city with city life with lots of migrated yankees, so your impression might be flawed of the hospitality of the South if you limit yourself to just one place. Happy travels! All 3 places are expensive to live in NC standards. If you are accustomed to a New York type of cost of living, it would appear very cheap. 1/3 the cost of living to be precise. Lastly, NC has several different regional environments. We have swamplands and forests and stuff sure, but the major areas are this, if you look at a map, you will see ( from East to west) Outer Banks ( beaches and lighthouses galore), Coastal Plains( flattest region of the state where agriculture/farms are most prominent), Piedmont ( most metropolitan region of the state that has a little bit of a "hilly aspect) , the FOOTHILLS region ( where the REAL hills are), then the Mountains ( very scenic like the east coast too). We do have the brown recluse and other undesirables as native creatures too around, so when in doubt, squish it. Cottonmouth snakes and other stuff too, research and see what regions you like best.

      Thank you for watching! Honestly your best bet is to check the big online employer/job websites such as indeed.com another good source might be to log into one of the Facebook Community pages for Wilmington people often post positions and needs there.

      Main problem with Wilmington, NC is there are NO JOBS in Wilmington NC. Wilmington Sucks!! There is NO INDUSTRY unless you want to work at a restaurant / fast food. There's nothing in Wilmington NC that's why people aren't rushing in droves to live there in that Hell HOle

    You both seem like such nice people! Grew up in the NW and it has changed too much for me and I don't like that much rain. Move to Boston then NY for 12 years then to East Bay CA area for past 7. My wife and I are in 50's and NOT
    close to retirement. California has such nice things in regards to weather and activities but my views, and budget fit much better in the SE region of US I am an outdoorsy sporty schoo1/private tennis coach who likes mtb, gravel biking, tennis, golf. I like water and mountains Wife is more domestic and enjoys having amenities nearby. No nascar or country music for either one of us. Went to Raleigh, Charlotte, Greenvi11e SC, Asheville, Charleston SC. There was a suburb of Charleston called mt pleasant we 1iked. How hard is it to move to this area without a job? She is in HR in Finance I transitioned from Healthcare to Athletics and am going for college positions but may have to settle for high school and take another position with it in Healthcare, business, Sa1es, Operations/Training . Any feedback appreciated... And tough question but have you heard of professionals in our age group coming and trying to land a job once there. Going to be very difficult getting something there while living in Bay area with covid, our ages, and being more in the generalist category than being a specialist.

    This sounds great! I'm a west coaster too. I'm glad you touched on diversity, my mom thinks that all of NC is racist. I lived outside of Portland, OR but its grown too much. I'm definitely looking for a place that's naturally beautiful, clean, and quieter. Also, how do you know how to stay safe from snakes, gators, critters?

    • @livinginwilmington2783
      @livinginwilmington2783  4 роки тому

      HAHA well the snakes, gators and critters are a thing here. Really mosquitoes are all the average person will need to worry about here, unless you are a great outdoors woman that wants to venture in to the swamp.
      Coming from a west coaster its a cool place worth a visit. Its a little like southern CA before all the people, except the sunrise is from the ocean and there are a few months of bad humidity. Let us know if you visit we will show you around!

      Ya we lived downtown for awhile as well and there are small areas around the perimeter that are really bad still. Its changing so fast in that area with the new development its going to be all really nice and I would guess expensive to live in the very near future.

      In 2009 I could've had a 3 bedroom home in a great section of CB for $169,500. I was 54 yo then. I turned that one down and similar homes as well. Sadly though I also turned down a fabulous fixer home in the historic district for $147.000. To see that house now that its been refurbished breaks my heart a bit. But, I guess I really didn't want a house. I've since retired and glad I didn't get a mortgage, 'otherwise I'd still be working full time. I now have time to enjoy the area's amenities and spending cash a fashion that fits my appetites.

      DL Southwell DL I’m actually looking at a Mobil home park in that same area. I’m from CT , 51 yo and because of the corona virus I’m now out of work, not sure if I even have a job to go back to & Having all this time off has allowed me to think about what I want. I figured now is a better time than ever to pack up my life, start over somewhere warm & affordable! Can you help me with tips? I can tell you which park I’m looking at too.

    My wife (who is pregnant too Lexi!) and I may be moving to Wilmington this summer. I keep hearing it is a retirement community with a lot of people from the NE moving in... is that true? Do you feel like there is a decent population of young professionals to make friends with? We are both in our early 30's.. we are concerned about it being so difficult to meet people with a newborn, especially if there aren't many young people to begin with. Thanks so much for making this video! We're looking at the Hampstead area for renting until we feel more comfortable with the area

      Congratulations on your new baby! thats so exciting! And I know can be super stressful when planning a move. So Im gonna start by saying we had an amazing experience with New Hanover Hospital and the whole delivery process. They have an award winning Women's & Children center (Betty H Cameron). We started out at the Bolivia Hospital and ended up transfering a couple months before i delivered our daughter....and I wouldn't recommend that.
      The Wilmington area for sure has a retirement portion of the population moving from NE, Virginia, NJ, & NY a large portion of these folks end up locating in some of the large Brunswick County Master Planned Golf communities such as St James (nicknamed St Jersey lol). This is also a college town (UNCW), military and a beach town so there are alot of younger people living here as well. Lots of great places to eat and brewery's popping up everywhere if thats your thing. As a young family you will have no problem finding a good circle of like minded/aged friends here. Hope thats helpful.....Let us know if you are making a visit before the move and we would be happy to show you around a bit!

      Yes on the NE moving here after retirement and a lot. Hampstead is a good area with young kids, good schools and many neighborhood with a lot of children. We moved here from Central NC and leased a house in Hampstead for a couple years to check out the areas around Wilmington prior to purchasing. While looking at homes, most communities around Hampstead had a lot of younger couples with kids. We liked Hampstead but chose to go inland a few miles to get acreage.

      I would say the area is slightly below average for a good size town for high salary corporate jobs... good area for tourism jobs and if you are are a Entrepreneur type person lots of needs and untapped potential.
