I bought the album when it was released in, I think 1968. The Roostertail in Detroit was, back then, the first stop for Motown artists' road tours.

Love it! What a hot version of "I Second That Emotion" ! So happy I have seen him perform live twice, once at The Roxy and once at Hollywood Bowl.

It was not 'Going To A Go-Go,' it was the patter leading into 'Ooo Baby Baby.' He does a great job on 'Walk On By' and The Miracles' harmony on 'The Theme From The Valley Of The Dolls' is fantastic! Someone should release the whole album on CD.

The "Snuggle very close like those two guys over there" was a reworking of an equally funny (no pun intended) Murray the K joke told at the Brookyln Fox Theatre in which Smokey & The Miracles were on the bill! ua-cam.com/video/yiyk63eXXqQ/v-deo.html

This was the album where Smokey refers to "two guys" in the Going To A Go-Go segment.

@rickeygj By the way, that joke was an update of a similar joke originated by Murray the K on his Big Holiday Revue (in which Smokey Robinson & The Miracles performed). Smokey's update was different enough that you can forgive him for "borrowing" the idea! You can hear the original performance in its entirety on UA-cam (Go to 7:45 at this link: ua-cam.com/video/yiyk63eXXqQ/v-deo.html )

The photo of the group singing and the cameraman that photo is from LEO'S CASINO in Cleveland ,Ohio. I am in the band.

You are probably right but this performance was from the album "Smokey Robinson & The Miracles Live!", which was recorded at the Upper Deck of the Roostertail.

This bassline is beautiful. It’s long melodic phrasing hold groove over several bars before resolving add to unanticipated push to the next cycle. Mean while, quick flurries of riffs tease the articulation on the response part of a conversational groove, all on the bass. Tony Newton is the man. He is one of the original Funk Brothers and James Jameson’s protégé.

Hey princeskyline54b2 the bass player is none other that Tony Newton. I met Tony in 1965. Tony was with them for a number of years.

For some strange reason, other songs from this album have been erroneously posted as being performed live at the Carter Baron (perhaps due to the fact that this album was combined on a CD with their final live album ("1959-1972"), which WAS recorded at the Carter Baron in D.C.!

Is this bass played by Jamerson?
