TODAY IN MUSIC: January 4, 1969 - 51 Years Ago Today: Smokey Robinson & The Miracles had the Hot Shot Debut at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with their single, "Baby, Baby Don't Cry." This Robinson-Al Cleveland-Terry Johnson-penned song was the R&B vocal group's 30th entry on the Hot 100 and it became their 21st Top 40 and 5th Top Ten when it peaked at No. 8 on March 1, 1969. The song was written by Alfred Cleveland, Terry Johnson and Smokey Robinson. [01/04/2020]
Absolutely GREAT song! First heard it several years ago at a Denny's restaurant of all places and have been a fan of it ever since, especially the fantastic bass work of James Jamerson.
Smokey is singing LIVE. Bobby , Ronnie, & Pete are LIP-SYNCING off of THEIR OWN VOICES, with Claudette’s voice added, and Marv’s guitar off of a pre-recorded track from The Motown studios. This was standard practice on TV shows in the Sixties
"Baby Baby Don't Cry", released in December 1968, is a single recorded by The MIRACLES for Motown Records' Tamla label. The song was written by Miracles lead singer Smokey Robinson, Motown staff writers Al Cleveland and Terry Johnson. Robinson, Johnson, and Miracles member Warren "Pete" Moore were the song's producers. "Baby Baby Don't Cry" was a top 10 pop hit for The Miracles, reaching number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 , and was a Top 10 R&B hit as well, peaking at number 3 on Billboard's R&B chart. It sold over one million copies .
My favorite Miracles song of all time. That chirping intro guitar by Marv Tauplin is pure bittersweet soul at it's very best. The melody and harmony has an odd throwback feel more akin to '64 or '65 Motown music. Still love it every time I hear it.
When 1st heard this song in New York City listening to WCBS 101.1 FM the oldies station. It was a july 4th weekend 1985 14 year of age. it was Motown weekend Friday through Monday. I recorded the song on cassette tape. Played that song over & over & over. Tuesday morning I went with my cassette tape, Sony Walkman This was the 80"s lol went to J&R Music in lower Manhattan across the street from City Hall. I went to see the 1st salesman in the store and asked for this song, Album Cassette tape 8 track, I wanted this song. They didn't have the album or cassette but they gave me the anthology album on compact disc. So I had to buy the cd player & CD walkman. The best $ 150.00 dollars I ever spent. I played that cd on repeat. Today at age 50 I still love this song.tears of joy, happiness, memories. Some things are hard to let go. Thank you Smokey Robinson, Claudette Robinson, Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore, Ronnie White, Marv Tatplin. This song always brings a smile on my face whenever I hear this.
I thank God I got to see Smokey in concert he is so smooth , classy, and talent(out of this world), and yes fine as wine, love the first wife, beautiful couple. Keep living Smokey, you are a genius.
OHHHH MY, DO I HAVE MEMORIES OF THIS SONG ! TOO MANY MEMORIES ----------------ONE OF SMOKEY'S & THE MIRACLES FINEST, EVER. -----------------------------MJL, 74 Y/O
I so love this, I sing it myself (alone in the house/car) to this day, he is unparalleled. but gotta say, as good as the back up singers were, those were some hokey moves they gave them.
Smokey Robinson's voice is timeless, so soulful, what a fantastic group. I know that he's been great as a solo artist, but some of the groups tracks are just great. I think my favourite track, is titled, A fork in the road, live version. Thanks for posting.
Our pleasure. The Miracles are the best. Smokey still looking dapper. We had the opportunity to interview his first wife Claudette recently at the Grammy Museum in LA. After her approval I'll post it on our youtube channel---vinyl city broadcasting---look for it. If you like the shows---tell your friends about it. THE VCB TEAM>
The Miracles , to me, were always better as a GROUP, then just Smokey was as a solo artist. The combination of SMOKEY, PETE, BOBBY , RONNIE, CLAUDETTE, and MARV as a TEAM had something special that no other group had, and that can never be duplicated . This is why they are #1 among ALL Motown groups in Grammy Hall of Fame-inducted songs ....and The Miracles are the most-covered Motown act of ALL TIME. From Wikipedia: " The Miracles have been regarded as the MOST-COVERED ACT in Motown's roster and have influenced numerous artists worldwide in the last 50 years."

Smokey Robinson my man he had one of the most mellow voices down in Motown he was a great guy I knew him personally but I was a little boy you choose me to be on his baseball team and we beat the s*** out of Berry Gordy and his team Long Live smoking
@Martin Ray I doubt that The Hall of Fame will induct Teddy solo...any more than Lionel Richie would get in solo. They are really big for inducting ORIGINAL Groups and artists so,TEDDY will probably go in with THE BLUE NOTES, and Lionel with THE COMMODORES...as it was with THESE TWO GROUPS that BOTH these artists first found fame. As both of them had scandals in their respective careers...this is probably better anyway...because it takes the FOCUS off of these two individuals (and their scandals) ...and puts it on the GROUPS that first made them famous. This focus on ORIGINAL MEMBERS and GROUPS was the very reason WHY The Hall of Fame later had to REVERSE their original decision regarding *JAMES BROWN* . They initially inducted him SOLO, (like they did Smokey Robinson) , but then due to public outcry, they had to go back and retroactively induct JAMES BROWN'S original singing group, *THE FAMOUS FLAMES* , and SMOKEY's original singing group, *THE MIRACLES* and BUDDY HOLLY'S original group *THE CRICKETS*...because they should never have inducted those lead singers SOLO in the FIRST PLACE. It's highly doubtful that the R&R HoF will want to make the same mistake AGAIN with future inductees.
The three gentlemen backing Smokey were bad dudes in their own right. Great harmony and kind of hypnotic the way they could drag out a word. I hope young people nowadays get a taste of this music. It has a spirit that is sadly missing in everything I hear today. This is music, what they make today is not music in my opinion.
They are : PETE MOORE, BOBBY ROGERS, and RONNIE WHITE. And , like Smokey , they were ALL ORIGINAL MEMBERS of THE MIRACLES. They were not ''backup" singers" for Smokey. Thanks for posting this amazing video. Its the first time I've seen this track, live. This group really sung some fantastic music, Smokey's voice is truly a wonder.
I agree with you, so glad it's actually a live vocal! I've seen so many TV performances from back in that day that had lip syncing instead of the real deal, just drives me nuts. Glad this wasn't one of those times :)
FIRST of the great MOTOWN GROUPS !!! Long BEFORE The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Jackson Five and all of the REST... there was *THE MIRACLES !!!*
It's great to see this rare clip... It just sucks that only Smokey is singing live. Now before you argue with me about this listen to the highest vocalist. That would be Claudette Robinson which at the time was Smokey's Wife. Two the background vocals are exactly like the studio version. And lastly if you pay close attention Smokey Robinson's studio background vocal is still in the background. However I'm just glad to even see this clip.
That technique was standard procedure on TV shows in the 60's . The group members (in this case, Miracles members Bobby, Claudette, Ronnie, and Pete,) would sing on a pre-recorded track over at Motown (which explains why Claudette's voice is on the track), and when the group The Miracles, Four Tops, Vandellas, or whoever, would perform on TV shows, that tape would go with them. Only the lead singer sings live, while the REST of the group basically LIP-SYNCS off of their OWN VOICES on that track . It eliminates mistakes so common to LIVE TV.
*R.I.P. PETE (1939-2017) BOBBY (1940-2013 ) RONNIE (1939-1995) and MARV (1941-2011)* Of the 6 Original members of THE MIRACLES, only SMOKEY & CLAUDETTE are left.

He wrote 30 top 20 songs and 3 #1 which include My Girl by the Temps, which is on the short list of all time great songs, and My Guy by Mary Wells. He was a songwriting machine. Also a great singer and just an all around cool guy.
From Wikipedia: "In 2015 the Miracles were inducted into The Official Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame in Detroit, MI.On their website it is stated that the Miracles' exclusion from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was "outrageous", pointing out Robinson's solo induction went against its own rules. Robinson had only spent 14 years as a solo performer and his name wasn't in front of the group's until 1967. It further stated the Miracles were "the heartbeat of Motown in the 1960s, one of the BEST vocal groups ever formed and owners of some of the GREATEST RECORDS Rock has ever produced." It was also stated that with the Miracles' induction, the Hall of Fame "remedied its most shameful chapter and the biggest miracle is it took this long to do it."
I LOVE ME SOME SMOKEY ROBINSON, HE IS MY NUMBER ONE FAN!! EVERY SINCE I WAS 11 YEARS OLD! I USE PLAY HIS ABLUM ON MY LIL STERO BOX,EVERY DAY AND NIGHT! ALWAYS WENT TO HIS CONCERTS AT THE SANGER THEATER IN NOLA,AND THE JAZZ FEAST!! I LOVE ME SOME HIM! ONE DAY, WE MEET FACE TI FACE! ❤❤😂😂
SMOKEY had enough POWER and CLOUT in the industry, that, had he actually INSISTED that THE MIRACLES as a GROUP be inducted back in 1987, The Hall of Fame would have, most assuredly, honored his request. He knows, full well, that , between his SOLO career, and his earlier career with THE MIRACLES, that the LATTER was, by FAR, the most successful. By accepting SOLO induction in 1987 (and , I'm sure he now realizes this) , he shot himself in the FOOT. Why? Because, had he insisted on ALL of The Miracles getting inducted back in 1987, He almost CERTAINLY would have gotten a SECOND INDUCTION later as a writer, producer, solo artist, and record executive. (Just like Curtis Mayfield and Michael Jackson did) But, now , after all of the POLITICS and SHENANIGANS involved in The Miracles' 1987 snub, a SECOND induction for SMOKEY probably WONT happen.
@@horizontoday7874 Claudette IS on the record...but she stopped doing live personal appearances in 1964...just months before the MIRACLES taped the AIP Concert Film, "The T.A.M.I. Show. Too bad. I would have loved to have seen her with the rest of The Miracles in that movie. Of course, she DID remain as a non-touring member of THE MIRACLES until her husband Smokey left in 1972.

He wrote 30 top 20 songs and 3 #1 which include My Girl by the Temps, which is on the short list of all time great songs, and My Guy by Mary Wells. He was a songwriting machine. Also a great singer and just an all around cool guy.

1969 Boston Naval Shipyard. Those were good times.

What show is this from? The Mike Douglas show?
Yes.
This undoubtedly should have never been an issue. Shame on Smokey for not protesting and rejecting that award.
i AGREE. The rest of The Miracles should have been inducted with Smokey .

(Left-to-Right) PETE MOORE, BOBBY ROGERS, RONNIE WHITE, SMOKEY ROBINSON
willcat unfortunately, no Claudette. She had the most distinctive voice actually
Which TV show does this come from please?
"Now, all you gotta do, is dry your eyes, long enough to see, that you have got the love you thought had in him, here in me..."
