I am so happy i found you and your channel.
When you speak about your experiences in life and what you have been through, it speaks right to my heart.
I am currently having depression, anxiety and from time to time panic attacks.
It is (atleast for me) kind of weird that i have to have an discussion every morning i wake up with my inner thoughts, to fight off the negativity that constantly hit me, every morning....maybe this all sounds very weird.
I have had suicidal thoughts myself three times, one of those times it was close to actually happen, i had everything figured out on what i was going to do.
Fear is a bad thing in many cases, but when you are about to commit suicide, it saves your life, atleast it did in my case.
I hope you never stop doing what you are doing, people need this content that you put up, Love from Sweden ❤️🇸🇪

The most intelligent reaction channel I've seen so far. There is actually intellectual content there. Subscribed. Very nice. You are doing great. And so much empathy and understanding of poetry. Fantastic.
Go on with Nightwish, please. There is a lot for you to discover in their songs. You saw two of them. This world alone is so much bigger and always different.
This song is the story of Tuomas (keyboard). He's the little boy and it's about his music here.

I can definitively relate with this song and Poet and the Pendulum. Four years ago, I got sick and lost everything, my job, my car, my college ongoing studies and eventually my girlfriend and when I was about to lose my home... I was between a rock and a hard place. Having suffered from PTSD for a long time, guilt and the sense of being worthless and an useless soul occupying a broken body led me to a decision. Either I killed myself, not really hard since I had (prescribed) drug (and alcohol) induced hepatitis, or I hitchhiked my way back to my home country, knowing it would likely kill me too, since I was so weak and only about 52kg (115 lbs), about 20kg below my ideal weight.
After weeks and weeks of internal conflict, where I consider several times killing myself, I finally decided to head out, with a half a pound of rolled oats and some basic supplies and a sleeping bag. I had 20€ in my pocket and was terrified. But through the week, as I moved closer to Switzerland, I met amazing people, and enjoying nature and sleeping outside, vulnerable to the elements, I gained a new perception on life and my place in the world, as well as making me a more humble man. Ten days later I got to Geneva and slowly I've been restarting my life. Unfortunately, just before I arrived, I almost died of dehydration and exhaustion, just outside Lyon but a kind soul gave me a lift, a meal and a bed for the night. For the first time in a long time, I have hope. It's been a rollercoaster since then but I'm finally getting therapy for my PTSD and depression and although I'm 42 and my main dream is and always was to create a family, I know I have to do baby steps before I walk again.
I don't think I ever talked about this to anyone... apart from my therapist, mostly because of the shame I still feel but what I wanted to say is... there's always hope, no matter how fucked up things are, there is always a sliver of hope... don't give that up, it's yours, hang on to it. Thank you, Amanda for your channel and great uploads, I feel normal here... and that's a rare feeling for me!

@@MentalAmanda Amanda, my goodness, I have NEVER seen anyone else who truly GETS what Tuomas is saying in these songs on such a deep and profound level as you do! I can see how you not only understand it but FEEL it. I am truly amazed at how quickly you zero right in on the exact details with such clarity! It is good for everyone to watch how you do that. You are an educational force for good in the world with these videos. Some things about Tuomas's particular story here you wouldn't be able to know yet is that he isn't merely writing this about a fictional character. Rather it is a sort of autobiography. This song, Dead Boy's Poem, was written years before The Poet & The Pendulum and presages for us what his thoughts were before writing PATP: namely that it is an analogous situation to the one you describe about standing on the ledge. He wrote PATP to commit suicide metaphorically, in the song, so he would not have to do it in real life. In DBP, it sounds he was still contemplating doing it in reality. Fortunately for the world, he chose the former. Had he done it for real, the world would have been robbed of this beautiful and priceless gift of himself he has given us.... exactly as you have done! [Sidenote: The "dead boy" to whom he refers often in his lyrics is the child inside him, still of innocent heart, who never grew up.]

Greetings from Finland, the home of Nightwish. This is what the composer/keyboardist of Nightwish, Tuomas Holopainen, has said about this song: "This is the most personal song I’ve ever written. My testimony for the whole world. With this song I want to apologise everyone who deserves my apology. It also makes an “I don’t care” -statement to them who deserve it. The song is also about what Nightwish means and has meant to me. It’s all, without it I’m dead. I have created it and it has created me. When I pass away, this song’s lyrics are of what I wish to be remembered. An Ocean Soul".

As somebody who is Bi-Polar with anxiety and Aspergers I find songs like this are sometimes hard to listen to, I have actually died through ODs but I am still here, but it has taken a lot. Floor has put so much more emotion into the song and it gets me every time. For a first, blind listen, that was a very perceptive interpretation.
Tuomas has said that this poem is what he would want to be remembered by, should he die tomorrow, so I think it's more hopeful or positive than it may seem at first listen. The first verse/chorus (to me, at least) is about the life of a touring musician - on the road, no place to call home, always looking for _that_ performance ("a perfect concert, my best friend"). The second verse/chorus contains references to other Nightwish songs (which you couldn't be expected to know) so, again seems to be about being a composer and getting wrapped up in the adulation of success. Some people have interpreted the poem as describing a troubled childhood, but the truth is that Tuomas loves his parents, had a happy childhood and still visits them whenever he can. I see the poem as more about him asking to be remembered for his music, not for anything else about him. (Although the meaning behind the line "I wish I didn't care for you anymore" still eludes me.)
Anyway, you have a long and wonderful journey ahead with this band and, if nothing else, we can promise that you won't get bored with them.
For a more uplifting song, try "Shoemaker" - a tribute to the space scientist Eugene Shoemaker (look him up, if you don't know him), the only human to have some of his ashes interred on another world (the moon). It'll have you crying, but with _good_ tears.

    • @deanabennett8461
      @deanabennett8461 3 роки тому +4

I think the “I wish I didn’t care for you anymore” line is a reference to Tarja. I think his feelings for her were much deeper than many realize. I believe early on he envisioned life as he and Tarja building a world around Nightwish, and thought of her as his soulmate. Of course that was shattered when Tarja found her husband. If you listen to many of his songs from that angle it makes so much sense. For example, with Ghost Love Score, think “Child” = Nightwish, “Siren” and “Angel” = Tarja. 🤔

The codex to Nightwish lyrics is basically Ocean Soul, The Poet and The Dead Boy are all terms Tuomas uses to refer to himself or aspects there of in his music. The Dead Boy is *mostly* about the death of childhood innocence and it's effect on him. The song Ocean Soul has a bigger framing of that name and it's referenced again in Poet and the Pendulum, "hoping that the tide will come and give me the death I've always wanted" And.. You're doing some good work here, being so open about mental health.

I believe you really will become a hard core Nightwish fan - their songs are made for the rare people like you.
"How is the Heart" - and do it as a double reaction, starting with the original from Human Nature album - and then the acoustic version from Planet Rock Radio - only Floor and Troy - from a promotion tour last spring. The question "How is the Heart" in 2 versions, and to me, Floor opens that question, the message in it, in two different ways - but judge yourself. The full version - and then the personal acoustic version, with deep passion and almost vulnerable colors used to be more precise.
You will love both - and with your sharp mindset, you will "draw pictures" of what both Tuomas and Floor tells in lyrics and singing.

"If you read this line, remember not the hand that wrote it." When the band met some fans they invited to the Wembley 2015 concert, (the Poet and the Pendulum video was from Wembley), as VIP guests, Tuomas felt uncomfortable when some of them started to praise him - Like my music, do not worship me. I'm nothing special as a human being.
You read Tuomas like an open book.
    Be safe!

Oh ... you went for Dead Boys Poem. I kinda suggested it too but wasnt sure as it is ... well ... really sad...
Maybe really do How's the Heart next. That's more possitive. Not "happy" but really uplifting! 😊
Also "Never sigh for a better world, it's already composed, played and told" is hands down the most beautiful piece of lyric ever written for any song!
Edit after finishing: I can't say how amazed I am by your take on Nightwish songs and lyrics. Your interpretation and what I can only identify as a sort of special insight lets me (and many others I'm sure!) experience these songs we know so well in a whole new way. So ... thank you! Really! For sharing your story a bit and opening up and for your beautiful reaction to this beautiful music. 😊❤
If you like I have another song from a different band you could check out. It's about a person battling with addiction. And loosing that battle.
The song is called Black Holes and the band is The Warning.
What's maybe most impressive about this is the fact that this song was written by a 13year old girl from Mexico who is the drummer of said band but sings this one on the piano, while her two sisters (bass and guitar) deliver the background music and vocals. Their passion is almost unreal, well worth taking a look! 😊
Here's the link to that song:

You started your adventure with this band from songs that were written in a very difficult period in the life of Tuomas - their creator. They are very beautiful songs - and very touching - but they are not easy songs to understand immediately. You have an amazing ability to understand these texts - I'm not surprised, today I'm not. I was surprised (and delighted) to hear your previous song with you - today I'm still delighted, but no longer surprised - I was right in deciding that it is worth staying with you! People like you - who have gone through difficult moments in their lives - have an increased sensitivity not only to the words spoken, but also to how they are spoken and - above all - what their author really wants to tell us. Of course, when you listen to this song a few more times, you will understand more, when you learn a bit of the band's history, you will understand even more - but the message, the main message, you read perfectly. That's the quality of a good song - the many times you listen to it, the many times you discover something new, but the message is clear.
Several people in the comments encouraged you to listen to lighter and happier songs for a change - I definitely agree - this is a band that can make you reflect, but also can make you have a great time! So - "Alpenglow" (Live at Wembley Arena, ua-cam.com/video/oNC_uZ2GeU4/v-deo.html) definitely yes, Floor will tell you at the beginning, "I Want My Tears Back" (https: //ua-cam.com/video/TBOdgxjb0kM/v-deo.html) - all the versions are good, but live in Buenos Aires will keep you smiling!
You can also listen to "Sleeping Sun" - this is a song that Tuomas wrote with some reluctance, because it is a piece made a bit "on request" - at a specific time and place. But, paradoxically, he created one of the most beautiful Nightwish ballads ever. It's also a good way to meet their former singer Tarja Turunen, it's well worth it! Anyway, you can listen to both versions - Tarja: ua-cam.com/video/zfPWU6CJ3vY/v-deo.html, Floor: ua-cam.com/video/rsotlzr9wNw/v-deo.html.
Tarja version - excellent, Floor version - excellent!
    See you next time!

Goodness gracious me! Your reactions (on PATP and on this song) are stunningly insightful, I subbed instantaniously! I really admire your drive and courage to talk about mental health. So many people have to cope with mental burdens they don't dare to talk about. But nearly everyone gets confronted with mental health issues, either personally or because someone dear/near to you is affected. Nightwish have had their share too. When you delve into old interviews with Floor, you'll see that she was still recovering from a burn out when Nightwish called her and politely asked to learn the setlist within 48 hours (just try to imagine that she said "no", if they would have called a month earlier, that probably would have been her answer!). I admire her for talking openly about it, this can give so much support and strength to other people in a similar situation! You already analyzed the turmoil Tuomas went through. And it must have been really hard for Jukka, the drummer, to pass on his sticks to Kai because he suffered from a very severe form of insomnia. Marco recently quitted (or: took a sabbatical, as many of us hope...) because of his depression. Just to name a few...
Anyway, keep up the good work and wish you all the best, you're a real treasure!

Thank you for a great take on another Nightwish classic. Their lyrics and music is very personal. Since your channel centers around the mental health issue, another song you may like would be from their new album released last year called "Human Nature." There is a song called "Noise." It is a music video as their haven't been any live performances yet due to the Covid pandemic, but it is brilliantly made. Without ruining it, the song is basically about the digital world we live in and how we become slaves to it, manipulate it and are manipulated by it and as a result, often miss the beauty that surrounds us. There is a ton of imagery in this video to catch onto. Since many so many people with mental health issues often have issues with social media specific platforms I thought this would be a good song to check out also.
Keep up the great work you are doing. It is very important.

It's so hard to pick, but if I was forced... I do believe this is my very favorite NW song of all time. There are moments when I would rather listen to others, but through the years... this is always the one I come back to... over and over. I think it's the duality throughout. The music is soft, yet rocks... Floor's vocals are so fragile in parts, and also powerful as rock belting gets. the music lays the tracks for the emotional rollercoaster the lyrics take you on... so many ups and downs... with Tuomas' genius on full display, matched only by Floor's ability to convey Tuomas' emotions and bring them from paper into reality. how lucky are we that they found each other... and that we live in the same space/time continuum they do so that we can enjoy these wonderful creations?

    Lyrics
I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you
    I'm sorry
Born from silence, silence full of it
A perfect concert, my best friend
So much to live for, so much to die for
If only my heart had a home
    Sing what you can't say
    Forget what you can't play
Hasten to drown into beautiful eyes
Walk within my poetry, this dying music
    My love letter to nobody
    Never sigh for better world
It's already composed, played and told
Every thought, the music I write
Everything, a wish for the night
Wrote for the eclipse, wrote for the virgin
Died for the beauty, the one in the garden
Created a kingdom, reached for the wisdom
    Failed in becoming a god
    Never sigh for better world
It's already composed, played and told
Every thought, the music I write
Everything, a wish for the night
    If you read this line
Remember not the hand that wrote it
    Remember only the verse
Songmaker's cry, the one without tears
For I've given this its strength
And it has become my only strength
Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality
Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew
The sweet piano writing down my life
Teach me passion, for I fear it's gone
Show me love, hold the lorn
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me
    I'm sorry
Time will tell, this bitter farewell
I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you
    And you
I wish I didn't feel for you anymore
    A lonely soul
    An ocean soul
    A lonely soul
    An ocean soul
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me
    Time will tell
    A lonely soul
    An ocean soul
    A lonely soul
    An ocean soul

Wonderful to see you again and spend some quality time together. This is a song from 2002. Tuomas wrote this hypotheically. I think. He is a very emotional personality and he felt this would make a powerful and emotional subject for a song. The good news is Tuomas is in a very happy state of mind currently. He actually had a very happy although somewhat isolated childhood growing up in Kitee Finland. It is a very small town in East central Finland.
This is a very emotional and personal song for Tuomas. The small child's voice represents Tuomas speaking. When asked what this song was about "Tuomas has said about this song, that it's about if he were to die tomorrow, what would he want to say to everyone that he loves, and that love him..." Notice the small boy on the screen reaching out to the flying swans on the screen. The swan is the guide to the afterlife in Finnish mythology. He is reaching out to implore them to take him with to the other side. A beautiful song filled with sadness from an unfulfilled destiny.
I is wonderful to see you are doing better these days. Your mission to help the people with mental health issues is a beautiful way to give back lovely lady. Be strong, stay positive, and reach for your bliss every day! I loved your reaction video. Be well. Love and peace. 🙏🙏🙏💖✌😊

Great reaction, I love how you pick up on the meaning of the songs so quickly. I'll echo what I'm sure others will, which is you should react to "How's The Heart?" from their most recent album. It is a truly beautiful song with a mental health theme. There are two amazing versions and I would recommend reacting to both, first the Official lyric video of the studio version, and then the live acoustic version from the Planet Rock sessions. BOth are incredible and the different arrangements make it almost two different songs, but both incredibly moving and beautiful. And again, a very different Nightwish sound to the ones you have reacted to so far. And fair warning, keep the Kleenex handy! 😉

The two songs you've done from Nightwish until now were really deep and each one has its unique meaning for Tuomas and for us, fans.
But, even as Nightwish is all about emotions, it's not all about negative themes. To balance the scales, I invite you to hear Élan (this same concert, at Buenos Aires) or Alpenglow (live at Wembley) to see how Nightwish can be uplifting and healing, no matter what. And, if you so wish, I recommend you hear Meadows of Heaven, in Anette's voice. It's a beautiful ballad and a really meaningful song from Nightwish with the lead singer Nightwish has before Floor.
I hope you continue your journey through Nightwish music. Your path is a little bit different from what we are used to see with other reactors, but I think everybody is loving it. At least I am. There are songs that deals with magic, nature, mental health (as you could see), anger, moments... To each song an emotion is evoked with them, and they always deliver that WOW factor we always expect from them.

Fantastic analysis! So glad you've found Nightwish. As others have said, Nightwish CAN be uplifting; Ghost Love Score, Alpenglow, Elan, I want my tears back are all great songs - I would suggest the versions from Wacken 2013 or Buenos Aires. I wish you well, Amanda.

Please know that the Nightwish Army will always be here to support you and each other.
Mental health issues are sometimes difficult for us guys to admit, as we don't want to be seen as weak! My drinking started after I had a failed marriage when I was in my 20's! I tried to replace love with alcohol.... and it didn't ever work! It only made me feel empty and alone!
But...I am closing in on my 22 year of being sober...which is a great feeling!!! I now put my emotions down on canvas painting landscape and abstracts. It gives me a sense of satisfaction and growth in who I really am!

Another stellar analysis Amanda. You captured the essence of this art form as it was supposed to be received. Your candor is astonishing. Time now for Nemo.
