After listening to Nightwish for 3 years now, this 76 year old has fallen in love with music again....This band is by far, the most talented I have ever heard....No need to mention everyone by name, but Tuomas, should go down in history as one of the greatest composers, and lyricist's of all time....Now we come to Floor, no words, the way she feels the lyrics and shows the emotion of each song is uncompereable, if thats a word....To me, "Dead Boys Poem" could be one of Floor's finest vocals, along with "Procession"....Hoping the old heart hangs on until my wife and I get to see the band in New York next year....Great reaction as always....

Greetings from Finland from a 60 plus Nightwish fan since they started in 1996. Totally agree what you said & also love Floor's delicate & emotional vocals in this & Procession. In one of her YT videos Floor told that she suffers (or maybe is blessed with) hyper sensitivity to her surroundings & other people, which may explain her unmatched talent in feeling & conveying emotions via her gestures & vocals.

    "If you read this line
Remember not the hand that wrote it
    Remember only the verse
Songmaker's cry, the one without tears
For I've given this its strength
And it has become my only strength
Comforting home, mother's lap, chance for immortality
Where being wanted became a thrill I never knew
The sweet piano writing down my life
Teach me passion, for I fear it's gone
Show me love, hold the lorn
So much more I wanted to give to the ones who love me
    I'm sorry
Time will tell, this bitter farewell
I live no more to shame, nor me, nor you
    And you
I wish I didn't feel for you anymore"

I’m 46 and I cry every time I hear this and many other Nightwish songs. The combination of Tuomas’s Amazing compositions and lyrics mixed with Floors emotional vocals just gets you every time.
You can tell there is deep emotional meaning behind this song (for two reasons apparent InThis video) 1. The look on Emppu’s face at the end of the guitar solo, there is some raw emotion there 2. The tone of Floors voice when she says “Thank you” at the end. It is the same as when she said it at the Wembley version of Poet & The Pendulum. You can hear that it has touched her emotionally and that she has just been on the journey/story of the song at a deep and personal level.
This is now Floor brings the songs to life, by living them as she is performing them.
This is her Superpower. Few singers can do that effectively!!!!

One of the most interesting things about this version of Dead Boy's Poem is that Floor does something pretty unique with her voice in it. Rather than switching between different vocal timbres for different verses or sections of the song, she almost continuously modifies her vocal configuration word to word and beat to beat so that she can smoothly ebb and flow between different sounds slowly building up the dynamic intensity all the way to the end of the song. It would be as if a guitarist were to continuously change the tuning of their guitar over the course of the song *while still playing it* the whole time. This approach does an amazing job at helping her tell the story of the song.

I agree. The Decades live album as a whole was very entertaining for how, not just Floor, but also the band approaches the old songs with a new arrangement. From '10th Man Down' to 'Come Cover Me', 'Deep Silent Complete', this one and 'Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean', each performance wasn't just a rehash of what's been, but a new thing altogether. 'Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean', for one, was one of the songs I was so glad to see Nightwish perform with Floor now because, honestly, that song was the song I skipped the most whenever Oceanborn was on. This rearrangement for 'Dead Boy's Poem' definitely was a highlight of the album - I already loved it when I first heard it in Wishmaster almost a decade ago, and was an example of what it means when we say Floor is versatile.

I've loved nightwish since 2000. This song originally is from the Tarja era. (Love you, Tarja!)
I had tried several times to get a chance to see nightwish live in those days with Tarja but things never worked out for me.
Anyway, Dead boy's poem always gave me emotions. (Amoung others)
Then, one fateful day, I nabbed a VIP ticket for Decades, and was overcome as I've already loved both Nightwish and Floor (Floor in after forever).
See, My momma showed me Nightwish as a teenager, and I was entranced since that day. My mom and dad both passed away in 2013. Ma and I were supposed to see Nightwish live. together... but things never worked out.
Obviously in 2018, it didn't happen that I was able to bring her in much more than spirit or heart. hearing Floor sing this song live literally just took hold of my entire heart and I cried as I sang along.
They changed the harmonies, and other such things to fit the line up as well as the vocals, but Floor just has this way of hitting you, emotionally, when the music already has you stunned. These are brilliant, incredible, and empathic individuals who Excell at their talent/craft. I am a fan til my death.

Can we just note how Emppu has not aged a bit? Doesn't matter if we're watching End of an Era, Wacken 2013 or Decades 2018, the man just stays the same. Would be lovely to see you react to some of his non-NW work, for example stuff he did with Brother Firetribe before stepping down earlier this year.

"She could sing the phone book and I'd listen" .... with Tuomas as the composer for the music, it would go down in history as one of the greatest songs of all time!
In my opinion, and I know many will hate me for the following, this performance is one of the best examples that Floor has so much more ability in telling stories and adding a certain mood to a song with her voice than the previous singers had. Don't get me wrong, Tarja did a great job on the original and it was one of my favorites from the Album back then, but this one here speaks a lot more to me.

    • @JWildberry
      @JWildberry 4 роки тому +10

I hadn't thought of it like that before. Now that you've mention it, I realize that I always prefer the Floor version of the most storydriven songs.
When I was a kid, my parents used to read to me. My mom would read the story beautifully, but my dad used his voice to really build the tension, or brought comfort when appropriate to the story. I feel like that's the difference you're describing here.

If anyone ever wants to know what Nightwish is all about, the answer to the question is without doubt buried within this song.
Firstly, the song explains the "Dead boy" theme, which is a recurring theme in Nightwish songs referring to the innocence and sense of wonder, Tuomas lost when he ceased being a boy and grew up to be a man. A lot of songs directly explore this theme in their lyrics (the most direct examples would be Dark Chest of Wonders, For the Heart I once had, and I want my Tears back) while some others directly mention "dead boy" in their lyrics, usually in a self-deprecating way like in Song of Myself ("[...] just another dead boy's song.")
The lyrics of this song beautifully describe Tuomas' entire approach to songwriting (for example the line "sweet piano, writing down my life." as well as "sing what you can't say, forget what you can't play.") while also giving us a glimpse into his general mindset while the instrumentation also shows off a wide range of the band's skillset.
So in a sense, Dead Boy's Poem is THE Nightwish song because it is the most representative for everything the band does and stands for while also providing a key to unlocking a lot of other song's lyrics. If you don't know this song, you will just gloss over a song's lyrics mentioning "dead boy" but if you know it, you will always perk your ears and listen closely whenever the lyrics mention the term "dead boy."
Equipped with this knowledge, it would only be fitting to tackle one of the "dead boy's songs" next. Maybe Dark Chest of Wonders from the end of an era live concert with Tarja.
