Thank you Tim for taking the time to carefully and methodically explain how to use Basecamp. Garmin obviously invested a huge amount of time and resources into the development of the program and then couldn't be bothered investing anything into educating people in a clear and simple manner on how to use it- thank goodness you did. Thank you again
Very helpful, well done! A pity Garmin haven't put out a video tutorial with this level of detail and clarity. So far I can't see why some viewers on another video have commented that this app is a bear to use, so far it looks highly intuitive to me. Maybe I'll learn more about the reasons as I work through more of your tutorials. Thank you very much
Thank you Tim! I am not an everyday user of my Garmin GPS but recall watching you great tutorials a few years ago before a cross country road trip. Super job with these videos!
I’m so glad that I found your videos on Base Camp. I’ve been so frustrated with this program I gave up trying to figure it out. So thank you for taking the time to make them to help us struggling with this problem.

THIS is what I've been looking for and needing. Trying to follow the "GARMIN" vids was confusing and very frustrating. It's like they were designed for someone that already knows how to use it, not a beginner. THIS series is easy to follow and understand. THANK YOU, Tim!!
Great editorial, really helpful. Would you know how to solve the straight line routes, when it is on the correct map.? Changing the maps doesn’t solve the problem.
You probably have the Activity profile of the route set to Direct. Open the Route Details and check. Change it to something else and recalculate. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the advice, really appreciate it. Tried it and it didn’t change anything. Thanks for making such detailed "How To" videos...I have a question, since most of my Motorcycle riding is off road on gravel/dirt roads on my dual sport, should I be using the Dirt Bike Activity Profile? or Motorcycle Profile and what is the difference?
Activity Profiles are simply collections of settings. Go into Edit/Options/Activity Profile. Select Motorcycling, set how it's setup. Sect Dirt Biking and see how it is setup and compare the two and see which one works for you. The profiles allow you to switch from one group of settings to another quickly. I'm studying the user manual for basecamp, but I'm having trouble putting a multiple route together from the manual, so I turned to you, and your making it all understandable. Thanks again and keep up the good work. Marc Trainor.
Great Video. I just got my Garmin DriveSmart 60, updated maps using Garmin Express. also Installed BaseCamp. Now I only see City Navigator North America NT 2019. How Do I get 2020.1 maps?
If you followed the instructions, Garmin Express will install the latest maps on both the GPS and computer. Check the version of the maps on your DriveSmart 60 to see if it matches the version on the computer.
Excellent presentation. We use the Garmin RV edition but have not used the computer software. Now that I know how to use it, I will. It will be a good complement to the one we currently use for trip planning.
If you have Map Updates for your Garmin, you can download the current map and load it to both your GPS and your computer. See my Quick Tip video on doing that. Thanks for watching.
excellent Tutorial... changing maps from Global to city maps was something that had been baffling me... couldn't understand why I wasn't able to create a route.. Thank you- brilliant
Always come back to your videos when I haven't made a route in a while. My question today is, I had a route I was trying to get to a reasonable length of time, under 6 hours of ride time. When I transfered it into my garmin GPS the route time came up almost an hour shorter from from it had on the desktop. I haven't gone through the turn by turn yet to make sure it transferred correctly but was wondering if there is a setting that I missed while resetting up basecamp? (I deleted it while cleaning the computer and didn't realize so I had to start over from scratch). Again, thanks for these videos.
1) Check to see if you have Fastest Time/ Shortest Route set the same in BaseCamp and on your GPS. 2) Drag more via points into your route. Other than that I don't have a definitive solution.
@@EZMotoTim looked at the GPS route and the front half of the trip is as I planned it on Basecamp but the back half throws me on the highway instead of how I planned it. I'll double check the settings of everything tomorrow to see whats going on and to resync it if necessary.
Regarding maps, the only map I have in the drop down box is Global. When I plug in my Garmin I then get, the Topographic and Birdseye maps. Am I doing something wrong?
Hi EZ Moto Tim, your videos have help me a lot in understanding Basecamp for motorcycling, I do have one problem however, my Basecamp does not want to use motorways(UK) between start and finish when I know the route is faster when using them. Preferences are set for "faster" and "interstate" so I wondered if you could help me?
It's hard to tell from here what is going on. Double check your preferences. Remember that checking "Interstates" means you want to avoid using interstates. A viewer in Australia had a similar situation and it turned out to be caused by a gap in the map. Troubleshoot it this way - create a new route between 2 points on the motorway. Continue adding points to see if BaseCamp will follow the road or get off and go around. Thanks for watching.
Hi Tim, your videos are great and I create routes now and I'm loving Basecamp... When I purchased the maps I only installed to my device. It seems like since I've already downloaded to my device it won't allow me to install the maps on my computer. I followed your instructions step by step and I don't get the option to download to the computer or device again, it only shows that the maps have been downloaded...
What device do you have and did you purchase a single map update or a lifetime map update. Another viewer has the same issue with his Zumo-XT. I haven't figured out what the restrictions are for putting the maps on the computer. (I have a Zumo 665 with lifetime updates and it works as I demonstrated in the video.)
Tim, I contacted Garmin... I purchased my device in Europe back in 2009 with lifetime European maps. I returned to the states this year and purchased what I thought was North America NT lifetime maps, but it wasn't... The guy said that was probably my issue, since I downloaded the maps only to my device and not my PC when I purchased the maps. Also, he stated that since I would have to pay for each update, it may be more cost effective to get a new GPS with lifetime map updates and a more upgraded system. I wanted a new GPS anyway, so I ordered the Zumo 396 LMTS and Garmin gave me an $80 discount... I hope it will serve me as well as the Zumo 660. Thanks again!
Tim, your presentation style is spot on!, maybe it's my age, (57) but I find almost all presenters seem to think it's a race to get to the end! Your relaxed style is both informative, and allows time for the brain to digest the info, please don't change!
Thank you very much for this. Just getting started with BC and did not find it very intuitive. Coming with SW dev background this app really looks old. Your tutorial really helped.
fantastic clear video well done, how do I install the map that is on my unit zumo660 so I can route without having to have the unit attached to the PC...
@@EZMotoTim Looking forward to the second part tomorrow. There are tropical temperatures here in the Netherlands at the moment so no cycling but time for your well spoken and didactic clever instructions. Thanks Tim. This makes life easy ;-)
The global map in longer routes when returning to Europe city maps puts in alternative roulettes not chosen in the global map. I could be doing something wrong? This feature seemed really handy but not working well for me at the moment. Up to. That point everything was fantastic.
The Global Map is just a place-holder so you see a map when you open BaseCamp. It's not to be used for routing. You need to use Garmin Maps for routing. Load the maps to your computer using Garmin Express. You may need to buy additional maps for areas not included with your GPS.
Thanks Tim, this was informative. We are RVers so we have different map planning needs. I was following along with you while I created my own route by setting my home as a starting point. Then I added a campground, but I could not get the route to recalculate as you showed and could not get the popup window you displayed. I realized if I select both places in the Unlisted Data label, then right-click and select "Create route using selected waypoints", the route began to calculate and display on the map otherwise it did not show the route. Not sure why the popup with the 6 tabs at the top is not displaying on my pc. All updates have been installed.
BaseCamp will work just as well for RV Planning. In addition to being difficult for people to use, BaseCamp is difficult to support without seeing your screen. First check to be sure you don't have the "Global Map" selected in the Maps menu. You should have a "City Navigator..." map selected. The popup with the 6 tabs is the Route Details page. There are a couple of ways to open it. 1) double-click on the route on the map. 2) Click once on the route on the map, then r-click on the route and select "Open." I don't understand why the route is not showing up, but I suspect you don't have the proper map selected. If, after watching all 4 BaseCamp videos, your are still having trouble, you can send me an email with a screen shot and I'll respond.
I just bought an etrex 32x unit and just started watching your videos. Although I am a mac user I managed to find the corresponding settings and have begun setting up the program and the unit itself. Just a quick question though, can I load maps to basecamp so I won’t have to plug in the device every time?
Tim, Outstanding video! Lots of good info there. I have a question. How do you add a map to Basecamp? Here is my issue: Basecamp has the City Navigator North America map version 2021.1 installed in the program. When I connect my Garmin ZUMO XT, I now see a newer map (version 2021.3). I can do all my routing on this new map. However, when I disconnect the ZUMO, the 2021.3 version map disappears from Basecamp. How can I import it so that it is always in Basecamp even if the ZUMO is not connected? If this cannot be done, how do I update the map (version 2021.1) that is already inside Basecamp? Thanks! - Mike
Tim, I stumbled on your other video which answered my question just minutes after I sent you this request. Another outstanding video! Another question: is there a way to remove old and unwanted maps in Basecamp short of deleting them off the computer? I have some maps that I use on my handheld GPS that I don't want to show in Basecamp, but I want to leave on the computer. Thanks a million! - Mike
@@michaellynch2559 Good - you found the Quick Tip on loading the maps to your computer. ua-cam.com/video/I4tlCR691Zc/v-deo.html I'll put the link in the description; many people ask the same question. Garmin City Navigator maps are installed the same way programs are installed in Windows. You have to go to the Control Panel / Programs to uninstall them. So it's all or nothing. Maps are installed or not. If they are installed they show in the Maps dropdown selector. Thanks for watching.
@@EZMotoTim Tim, I installed the latest map in Basecamp and on the ZUMO. The new updates also included new software for the ZUMO. I was writing some notes on how to do this and I went back to repeat the process and check my notes and now I no longer see the options to load the map on the Zumo, the computer, or both. What happened??? It only loads on the Zumo now with no other options.
@@michaellynch2559 Connect your Zumo to the computer. In Garmin Express, click on your Zumo. GE checks to see if any updates are available. It should display "Map Update Available" or "Updates Available." Click on "View Details." Click on "Installation Options." You should see the options for Device Only, Computer and Device, Computer Only.
Hello Tim, Her in Germany is in a navigation Forum a diskussion about the settings in BC for the term - Kehrtwende- at Routing Prefencences. In your US version this is the term U-Turn. What is the meaning, interpretation for U-Turn roads in US and why is this in BC a setting item vor avoidance? Hairpins on moutain roads? ?. Why. Could you explan this.
@@EZMotoTim Hello Tim, Your answer is just my expectation. There is a different meaning and reason. I was writing of routing preference in tour planning on Basecamp and there you can select Activity Profiles „prevent U-turns“ like prevent Motor Highways. This is on planning not an action you have to do if you miss a waypoit then please turn. Basecamp is not doing this. Basecamp got the order not to use U-turns on his calculation of shortest or quickest direction to the next waypoint. So there must be a special characteristic on the roads which in this way does not exsist in Europe. I found a Video yesterday which confirms my asumption. ua-cam.com/video/JIVboYmqHmU/v-deo.html Also on your highways as I remember driving there you have very wide gras lanes between the two directions of the driving lanes. Every few miles the gras lane is interuppted with connection a lane to the two driving lines. Are they open for everybody to use for u-turns. Again in Europe such wide gras lanes are commonly not present (beside France about meanwhile nearly 55 years ago, I was there first time, on their at that time only exsisting Toll highway Paris Lyon Marsaille, but this room was planed and build up in the 70ties for both directions into the 3 driving lane). So the question is. Is there now if you select for planing provide U-turns an additional attribute set in the nav like waypoints on the „map“ which create a route if the shape of the rosd looks like an U-turn an additional possibilities to drive are present?
The avoidance of U-Turns has nothing to do with hairpin turns or switchbacks on mountain roads. Some roads here have a barrier between opposing lanes. If U-Turns is set to allow, the GPS may take you to the next available opening in the barrier and instruct you to make a U-Turn. If U-Turns is set to not allow, the GPS should route you on streets to make a loop and end up going in the opposite direction.
Hey Tim, I really enjoy your videos while leaning as well. Your explanations for using Garmin BaseCamp are REALLY helpful. However, something I have missed or maybe you haven't covered is how to remove Data from the internal storage on a Garmin Nuvi 2582. If you know how to do this, I would surely love to learn how. Clicking on them does not give an option to delete
Can u use a Garmin to plan your trip without a computer and Basecamp?I bought this for my dad and want to load maps for him because he doesn't have a laptop at the moment.
Everytime I try to create a route with Basecamp it freezes up forcing me to reboot the program. I have windows 10 on my laptop and wanted to use Basecamp to make routes for my Garmin Overlander.
There must be something wrong with the installation of the program as this never happens to me, obviously. It may be an access rights issue. The program may not have rights to open the database. Have you installed the Garmin map using Garmin Express? Try running the program as Administrator. If that doesn't work, uninstall and try running the setup program as Administrator. There are many possibilities. It might be helpful to talk with Garmin support. Thanks for watching.
Tim, Thanks for your detailed description of Basecamp. I'm using a navigator V1 on my BMW rt and have it interfaced with my Mac book Pro. Are the mechanics of the Mac that much different from what you"re doing and is the difference enough to justify getting a cheap PC laptop just to interface with my Garmin Navigator? Thankyou for your help (also 71 and still going strong) Larry
Good video. Just start watching these tutorials. For the alignment for north there is a easy way for me. I just hold the "alt" key in then klick on the "N". The same thing will happen with east, south and west.
I never knew where New Braunfels was. It didn't appear until I zoomed in far enough. Is there a way to "find" the city and have the map centered on that city?
Thanks for the reply. I thought I was doing that but now I see that it works. I have watched all your videos pertaining to Basecamp. Very usefull. I discovered the problem. I was trying to create a route with the Garmin not connected to the computer. Only Global Map was there. Now I have the latest library on both the Garmin as well as the computer. Thanks Chuck
The maps come from Garmin. Some GPS units come with lifetime map updates. For other units you can purchase lifetime map updates. I believe you can purchase the maps from Garmin if you don't have one of their GPSs, but I'm not certain of that.
Thanks for a great video re the set up! I'm new to Basecamp (using it on Mac). I understand the folder structure, but can't figure out the point of a "List". When I want to create a Route, I first have to create a List and then create the Route inside of this List. If the List the way of containing all the info required for a particular route on the map (ie the routing, waypoints, directions, etc), why can one create multiple routes per List? That seems confusing to me. Thanks
Think of a List as a bucket that can contain many items, such as waypoints, routes, tracks, etc. A List is the lowest level folder and Garmin could have called it a folder. Don't think of a List as everything needed for just one route. For instance, a List could be named "Alaska Days 1-5" and contain routes and waypoints for the first 5 days of a trip. Folders and Lists are just devices for organizing your data. Organize them in whatever way makes sense to you.
Hi TIm, Thanks for your video's! I've been cursing base camp for years, now I get it, I will see how the first planned trip works out. I have the Nav Vl, are there setting to make on the GPS so that if you get off route it wont recalculate? Is is as easy as turning off the recalculation setting when you are following a planned trip? Thanks Again Tim, David
Tim in the very first few moments of the video you talk of loading maps on the garmin device and the computer. I've loaded maps on my garmin device. I know of no way to load them on my computer (WIN 10). When in base camp with my garmin device plugged in via USB the map appears (not global). I assume you are talking of having the map on the computer to plan routes without the garmin device being plugged in. Is this correct? Then you plug in the garmin device and upload the route. How do I get the map stored on my computer?
See my video on loading Garmin maps to your device and computer. You do it using Garmin Express. You need to have the device connected to load the maps, but you do not need to have the device connected to use BaseCamp to create routes. You connect the device to load your routes onto it.
@@EZMotoTim thank you. I had done it successfully, closed basecamp then upon restarting basecamp (same computer session) the loaded map did not appear. If you followed the instructions, Garmin Express will install the latest maps on both the GPS and computer. Check the version of the maps on your DriveSmart 60 to see if it matches the version on the computer.
thanks for this detailed informative video, i use basecamp several years now. but still learned something new

Excellent presentation. We use the Garmin RV edition but have not used the computer software. Now that I know how to use it, I will. It will be a good complement to the one we currently use for trip planning.
Thanks. I'm glad the video helped you break through.
Thanks. New user to Basecamp here. Very useful.

Great info. Why isn’t my 3D box lit up?
There are 2 programs. Did you start the program, "BaseCamp" or "BaseCamp (2D only)"? You can't activate 3D if you are running the 2D only version.
Thank you

Very nice and explicit. I have the next presentations in QUE. My map is a bit out dated 2015
If you have Map Updates for your Garmin, you can download the current map and load it to both your GPS and your computer. See my Quick Tip video on doing that. Thanks for watching.

Thanks Tim. Just getting started with BaseCamp. Your video is very helpful. You must live in Colorado. I'm in COS.
Thanks Jerry. Colorado is a great state to ride in as you know.

Good to know. Some say my delivery is too slow. Others, not.
@@EZMotoTim Thanks Tim
@@EZMotoTim Thanks for your reply Tim. I have the Zumo 660 and I did purchase the lifetime map update...
@@jeffgibbons2572 Without sitting at your computer, I'm afraid I can't be much help. This is quite strange, since it works with my Zumo 665.
Aha. Now we have the rest of the story. This will be very helpful to others in the same situation.
Great Stuff Tim!
Looking forward to the next instalment.

If you click on N, E, W, S on the compass wheel it will align that specific direction to the top. No need for "Align North Up"
Thanks for the tip.
I just bought an etrex 32x unit and just started watching your videos. Although I am a mac user I managed to find the corresponding settings and have begun setting up the program and the unit itself. Just a quick question though, can I load maps to basecamp so I won’t have to plug in the device every time?
Yes. Use Garmin Express. Take a look at Part 1 of this new video series. Thanks for watching.
Tim,
Outstanding video!
Thanks!
- Mike
Tim,
I stumbled on your other video which answered my question just minutes after I sent you this request.
@@EZMotoTim Tim,
I installed the latest map in Basecamp and on the ZUMO.
It should display "Map Update Available" or "Updates Available." Click on "View Details." Click on "Installation Options." Hello Tim,
Her in Germany is in a navigation Forum a diskussion about the settings in BC for the term - Kehrtwende- at Routing Prefencences. In your US version this is the term U-Turn. What is the meaning, interpretation for U-Turn roads in US and why is this in BC a setting item vor avoidance?
Hairpins on moutain roads? ?. Why.
Could you explan this.
If you miss a waypoint, the GPS may tell you to make a U-Turn to go back and pick up the waypoint. A "U-Turn" means, "turn around and go back."
@@EZMotoTim
Hello Tim,
Your answer is just my expectation.
I found a Video yesterday which confirms my asumption. ua-cam.com/video/JIVboYmqHmU/v-deo.html
Also on your highways as I remember driving there you have very wide gras lanes between the two directions of the driving lanes.
I believe you have to delete routes and favorites on the unit itself. At least that's the way it works on my GPS. Thanks for watching.
I was wondering that too, thanks for the tip.
I found this REALLY helpful thank you and have subscribed. Really good.
Thank you.
EZ Moto Tim Pleasure, I’ve just watched it again to see your description of the options. Your videos on BaseCamp are the best I’ve seen.
Can u use a Garmin to plan your trip without a computer and Basecamp?I bought this for my dad and want to load maps for him because he doesn't have a laptop at the moment.
Yes, but it's tedious and impractical.
@@EZMotoTim Thanks for the different suggestion and I have found Garmin tech support useless since none of them have ever call me back.
I don't have a Mac, so I can't give you a direct answer. Check out jobybyrne here on UA-cam. He has several videos on BaseCamp on a Mac.

Good video. Just start watching these tutorials. For the alignment for north there is a easy way for me. I just hold the "alt" key in then klick on the "N". The same thing will happen with east, south and west.
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching.
I never knew where New Braunfels was. It didn't appear until I zoomed in far enough. Is there a way to "find" the city and have the map centered on that city?
Type in the search box or use the Find menu.
Thanks
Chuck
Where would I find the maps that you have downloaded? Is there a cost for the use?
The maps come from Garmin. Some GPS units come with lifetime map updates. For other units you can purchase lifetime map updates. I believe you can purchase the maps from Garmin if you don't have one of their GPSs, but I'm not certain of that.
Hola. Nice video. Muchas gracias
Thank you.
@@EZMotoTim Hi Tim, thank so much, that's crystal clear and super helpful.
Could you explain how to download a map onto basecamp?
Hi TIm,
Thanks for your video's! I've been cursing base camp for years, now I get it, I will see how the first planned trip works out. I have the Nav Vl, are there setting to make on the GPS so that if you get off route it wont recalculate? Is is as easy as turning off the recalculation setting when you are following a planned trip?
Thanks Again Tim,
David
You could try turning off Auto Recalculate if your model has that feature.
The next day, after shutting down the computer for the night, the map did appear. My observation is a computer restart is required for the map to appear. I've gotten it working.
@@edray9766 Perhaps a restart is required, but you can probably select the map from the Maps menu item at the top of the screen without a restart.
