His 150 pt season was when all the stars aligned. I don't think we had a better regular season taam in the McDavid Era. Fundamentaly he continues to improve and his peak remains to be seen.

McDavid's defensive game has been improving a lot. Seems like his focus shifted

He had 42 points *in the playoffs* last year. 100 assists in the regular season. Where is this "slowdown"?

Just compared to previous seasons, this is a slower start.

Gretz, Mario, and Orr all peaked statistically around 23-24 years old. Connor did it at 25 years old, but was the only one with a Covid year as a porential set-back. Statistically, probably...In value, not yet!!! 🧡💙

    1. maybe oilers started getting depth scoring now and not rely on one guy to get pts? 2. maybe he has focused on being better defensively (which is true)

I think he is so focused on winning a cup that he has kinda learned to conserve and reserve energy. He’s not like 99. He used to get to 4 pts and push to go as far as he could. 99s game was kinda suited that. McDavid takes more punishment. He just wants to win not rack up pts. He knows how much his legacy depends on it! So has he peaked at 153 Ya probably. But who knows if he gets that elusive cup, maybe he’ll decide to go for it! See how far he can push the envelope. You know cheat more for offence. Obviously that has to happen very soon though.

We need to keep in mind that the value of a player such as Connor McDavid cannot be judged on statistics alone. There are also several factors such as; a) The support and respect of linemates (set up players) as well as the team in general. b) Team leadership on and off the ice. c) The highly valued respect from all league players, coaches/managers and fans. d) The ability to bounce back into dominance after sustaining an injury or lack luster play. e) Finally, there are many intangibles such as the effectiveness of the player when the puck is not in their possession (ie. screening the opposite netminder, effective hits against the opposition, shotblocking, distracting the opposition and both offensive and defensive play which at times may or may not be noticed by fans in general).

Yeah he peaked in points 153 from a statistical standpoint, but his game is gonna grow until he reaches 2000 points

I suspect he's peak give or take a couple years, which is late for a skater.
Peaking involves a lot of factors:
Physical, skill, teammates and lady luck.
I think players probably peak physically around 21, their skill is peak when they retire, and tends to make up for declining explosivity.
I don't think his teammates are going to improve, Hyman had a statically unusual year last year. Luck is literally random, though no doubt some strategies are more luck dependant.
There's also the difficulty of schedule, if in division teams are very strong a player will tend to score less. You can really see this during the covid all Canada division.

if all the stars aligned theres no doubt he would reach 200 points. he'd need a solid 2 way winger along with a goalscoring winger.
along with a top tier defencemen pair, one OFD and one DFD or TWD.
But with how edmonton manages their players and salary cap it's impossible.

I wouldn’t say peaking for total points in a regular season is really beneficial for the team if they don’t produce in the playoffs. I’m thinking he’s shifted to conserving energy for post season.

Hey man, big fan! Do you really think we are gonna play good enough for Skinner to be our Stanley Cup winning goalie?!

Ehhhh thanks for the comment man! First off, I don't think of him as highly as other Oilers reporters do, however they were within 2 goals of winning the cup this past season, so yes. Stuart Skinner is good enough!

He's never going to be Wayne Gretzky. Gretzky played with Kurri almost exclusively. Who does McDavid play with EXCLUSIVELY ? No one actually. I take you back to 1987-88, Paul Coffey (who is now assistant coach for the Oilers), so go ask him and come back to me and tell me if I'm wrong. But I guarantee you I'm right. So here it is: Coffey was traded to Pittsburgh because of a salary dispute. The Oilers got Simpson and a few other players. It was a steal by the Penguins at least in my mind. Not taking anything away from what Simpson registered with his new team and he did A LOT for Edmonton but if you're general manager there's no way you're going to get rid of Coffey UNLESS there's a salary dispute and there was. So in the 1988 playoffs Gretzky CONTROLLED every team he played, with assistance of who exactly ? Oh yeah, mostly Kurri. After Coffey was traded, I'm sure many people thought Gretzky had peaked simply because he didn't have his Bobby Orr style defenseman back there but he still had Kurri. Now if McDavid had someone like Hyman ALL the time, he's injured now, well maybe he would be at his peak now or soon. You say Draisaitl ? Well, mostly on the power play but the Oilers don't get many power plays anyway. So I would have to say that maybe McDavid has not peaked yet.

It’s quite obvious why McDavid’s points have decreased he has focused on the defensive side of the game he knows that his legacy is dependent on winning cups not just putting up regular season points to say he has peaked in terms of the number of points sure but that isn’t because he can’t put up that much he just chooses that because it doesn’t lead to success in the postseason.

Does Connor Mcdavid judge himself by regular season points what so ever anymore? That might be the question.. I know as a 16 year Mcdavid massive fan he could get 180 if he wanted. But what does that do when the playoffs come, he literally wants to drag his team in and not be a one man show.
