Wow! That was amazing to watch. Japantown looks almost the same today in 2020. Soko Hardware at 5:12 looks exactly the same! I remember San Francisco in the 80s. Seems so different yet there are parts that somewhat stood still through time (Japantown and parts of Chinatown). That PanAm airline sign in the window in Japantown was awesome. Life was chill back then. Lastly, the white pants! Reminds me of my grandpa, and was the thing to wear back in those days. (Fun Fact: The Peace Pagoda at 5:16 was designed by Yoshiro Taniguchi)
2:40 The South San Francisco sign on the hillside is visible from my house. In 1980 we visited SF now and then, nice to see how it looked. 3:36 Aw, it kills me to see Candlestick Park. All gone now. Sure it was a windy old wreck, but it was OUR windy old wreck.
Thx for sharing this ! I was 9 at the time. Strange to see years later a part of that trip : ) And thx for not adding music or else. That way, we feel like being part of the trip too !
The 80's was a time where you can raise a family in San Francisco, now people are moving out of $6000/month apartments to live out of state (COVID-19).
Woah i didn’t know there were no railings between the people and the cars back in the 80’s,it’s so interesting how different at that time compared to today!
That old footage of Japantown is SO COOL!! It brings back some of my best childhood memories. It still looks very similar structurally, but it has changed a hell of a lot in just about every other way. You can totally see that if you look closely here.
Thats Japantown... At 5: 32 that walkway... I remember that, and right beyond those doors..I remember a restaurant, and right to its left an electronics store with all-glass walls that sold Beta vision VCR's along with TV's and answering machines... Or something like that... And a Japanese grocery store that was on a hill.... I remember bits and pieces of it... My family were closer tied to Japantown in San Jose so most of memories are of that... In 1980.. :)
@@andytaylor5476 no but I bet you could get one for $500 a month. That would be like $1500 today. Not cheap but affordable for a professional not like the $3900 market rent rates today.
I was a 9-year-old girl. Woolworth was still around. "Charlie's Angels," finished its 4th season. "The Dukes of Hazzard," finished its 2nd season. Team USA boycotted the Summer Olympics in Moscow. Wow! What a time!
I don't really think of 1980 as a long time ago, but that's probably because I spend a lot of my time reading history books about things that were happening hundreds of years ago.
Ahh ! The airport ! You going to hop off a bus- run to your airline ticket counter- give them your ticket ( stamp stamp stamp ) run to the waiting room ticket person ( stamp ) And run on the plane and get your seat ! 15 minutes 👀

That was fun! I'm old enough to remember when the city looked like that. Time flies.

I was negative 10 years old
Notice the absence of Muslims and Arabs and Mexicans and Guatemalans and anything a little and brown
@@PingPong-bv8ye I wasn't (and still not) living in SF but granted, another time, another world (not meant to be a critique, just an observation) .
@@stephaneb.9102 well I have lived here for 43 years !
San Francisco seemed so much better back in the 1980s.
Japan Center and Miyako Hotel look virtually the same in 2018, almost 40 years later.

SAN FRANCISCO WAS THE BEST THOSE DAYS I CAME TO SF IN SEPT 1980 AND STILL HERE

The days compact parking spots , no bums everywhere ! Skinny people. 1 bedroom apartments for $175 a month.
175 a month... oh God.. that sounds heavenly.
dont forget the endless lines of cocaine
Jake Smith $175, even factoring in inflation, a regular person could still afford to live in the city. That might be like $500 today.
You could not get a one bedroom apartment that cheap ($175.00) in 1980!

Wow. So many 747s at SFO back in the day. Nowadays they're virtually non-existent. LOL!
Four engines = fuel $$$$, they save a lot of money with long range twin engines nowadays
Back when San Francisco was 85% White
I think the airport shown was Tokyo given all the diff JAL fleets.
Well dressed people
Back when Tokyo Sukiyaki /Fishermans Wharf was open and very authentic.
What a great video I lost all my family's 1980 films
A long long time ago... Very nice

Wow, nostalgic! That must be terminal D in SFO; now is part of Alaska airline terminal!
