That view @ 5:24, looking north on Wolfe Ave towards the freeway overpass. Long before the build up. Back when a few orchards still dotted the landscape. Thanks for posting. Really enjoyed the trip!
Amazing footage! I loved frequenting this mall in my teen years when it was already considered a dead mall. I was feeling very nostalgic about it since it was torn down. Thanks for this little trip to the past!
I remember Vallco Mall when I was little as it gone through renovations over the years as the mall had the AMC as Vallco Fashion Park was changed to Cupertino Square since 2007 and change the name to Vallco Shopping Mall as this mall was dying due to the big mall Westfield Valley Fair is the king of the Santa Clara mall.
Nice memories - Life long resident of Cupertino and graduated from high school class of 1979 about 1/2 mile from the mall on Finch. Worked in the mall at the record store near Sears. Also remember when the mall was being built
Refreshing to see that hunchback electronic screen disease (smartphones) had not hit at this time. People actually engaging with each other and their environment rather than staring at and interacting with little screens.
You should put Vallco Mall in the title so people can find it easier. Love this video, amazing you have real film saved from this far back. I moved to SJ in 1997 so I caught the last few years of Vallco being busy, but it looked cooler back then!
Really, really incredible looking footage. How beautiful California was at that time- easy to see why so many converged there with the rise of computers. Thank you so much for posting. Please post more, if available. :)
I started going to Vallco as a teenager in 1993. It still had a decent amount of activity back then. Vallco had a comic and gaming store, a couple of video game places, and of course the arcade at the end, so it had a lot of appeal for my demographic. I never got to try that restaurant over Wolfe Road, though. It was still open, but always empty.
Same here. Legends comic store, natural wonders, walden books. I also never tried the wolfe street cafe. Good times. Malls are awful now. It is all food places and body soap.
I loved Valco mall especially in 93, Friday night ice skating and the Arcade Tilt stayed open till well past 11pm. You didn't miss much that restaurant over Wolfe road on that "sky bridge" was all mediocre to subpar food. Better eating at El Torito across the streets or the pizza and other restaurants by the Ice rink.
Thanks for sharing the video!! I grew up in Cupertino and was 17 in 1980. I remember that mall so well. The Rainbow Records store! Just the scenery in general brings back so many memories.
Ken thank you for posting this video. I was born in 84 in Sunnyvale and frequented Vallco growing up until recently when it closed its doors. Amazing to see what it looked like in 1980!! Also seeing how much open space there was back then.
Things seemed more permanent back then. There were old nostalgic buildings everywhere. Now most things are demolished for new and more profitable construction.
I was growing up in a house two blocks from Vallco in 1980. I remember all the sites and places... I'm pretty sure they were speaking Japanese. Tough to tell fro the audio.. But if they were, and if some of those people lived here... I've probably met them. Not alot of Japanese families to choose from in Coops Town other them mine in 1980.. ... My family use to know them all. Until Steve Jobs came and F-ed everything up... One dude looks really familiar. Geez Im middle age and I cant remember the name of that little Japanese produce store that was here for decades... not Yamagami's, Yamaguchi's,.... >Somebodys< Produce...
Hi! I am a local resident who has many fond memories of Vallco. I am experimenting with making film montages and my current project is to make a video tribute to this mall full of people's experiences. Your video is very sweet and would fit right into my project! I am therefore asking for permission to use this clip in my montage. I will post the final result to UA-cam and I will include the link to your video in the description. Then I will send you the link to the final product. If you're not okay with me using your footage, please let me know ASAP.
small ed - I was 11 in 1980, we went to Vallco almost every Sunday after church for lunch, and it was pretty popular back then. Always was my fave mall, RIP Vallco
Vallco Fashion Park as that Cupertino mall is already demolished. Sad that the last time my family went to Vallco Mall since 2012 when I move out of Bay Area 😔.

Thanks for posting my childhood play ground.
Amazing footage! I loved frequenting this mall in my teen years when it was already considered a dead mall. I was feeling very nostalgic about it since it was torn down. Thanks for this little trip to the past!
very nice mall! how sad things change
These were simpler and better times.✨

Thanks for the memories. Great to see Azuma, back when the food was good. Glad you recorded the storefronts too.

Seriously thanks for posting this! Brings back memories of the long dead mall Vallco.
Was that Valco? I was only there are few times, but I went to the Stacey's book store quite a bit.
Born (1955) and raised in Cupertino... recently retired from City of Mountain View and live in the Central Valley. This was fun to watch.
Reminds me of when my family moved to San Jose in 83 from Portland things have sure changed in CA

No label or information about the video ... poster is an idiot. Sorry, but put something up you have to explain it and document it.
@@justgivemethetruth Be nice...a picture is worth 1,000 words, and a video is worth 1,000,000 (before the days of Photoshop, anyway).
When I was little we used to go to Vallco a lot, I remember trick or treating there for a few years. It was always so crowded.
Really, really incredible looking footage. How beautiful California was at that time- easy to see why so many converged there with the rise of computers.

Thanks for the video!I was born in 84 and grew up in Cupertino.i always wondered what valleco looked liked in the 80s
My first time there was in 1996 and even then it looked a lot different than this (but wasn't starting to go dead until the mid '00s)
San Jose was still nice then.
Thanks for sharing the video!! I grew up in Cupertino and was 17 in 1980. I remember that mall so well. The Rainbow Records store! Just the scenery in general brings back so many memories.
This is awesome !!

Give me a time machine!! I’m not saying times were easier, but at least there wasn’t A LOT OF CONFUSION like in today’s world.
Omg were white pants all the rage in 1980? Those shorts on the one man are so high? Great video.
This is Gold! especially the airport shot with the then Brand new 747's lined up...
Ken what month in 1980 was this from .??
Wow. Azuma's! Had no idea it has been here this long
Smoking a grit in the mall.
I remember ash trays in the supermarkets.
Awwww I missed when Cupertino was quiet.... thanks a lot Steve Jobs. 😒
I didn't know game keeper was there in 1980!!
Things seemed more permanent back then. There were old nostalgic buildings everywhere. Now most things are demolished for new and more profitable construction.
I remember when only Sears was there no mall yet.
Azuma is still in business to this day
Yes, but they had to move down the street a bit 😮

3:34 was the Rainbow Records in the same place Sam Goody was in the 90s? I don't remember it so it must've already been gone by '97
Bought quite a few vinyl albums and 45s at Rainbow Records (I was born in 1969)💁🏻♀️
old cars are everywhere
Old is relative 😉
crazy how things change :(

There wasnt much traffic on the road back then.
Before the radical technological advancement of RubberMaid garbage cans.
Wow so this was Vallco before it was dead
Inside Leo's Mind Judging from the footage, I wouldn't say it was particularly hopping back then either, but it had more character.
small ed - I was 11 in 1980, we went to Vallco almost every Sunday after church for lunch, and it was pretty popular back then. Always was my fave mall, RIP Vallco
Yes. Valco was nice
Sir, can i borrow a dime for the payphone?
Model of videocamera, please?
Well, what mall was this?
Vallco Fashion Park as that Cupertino mall is already demolished. Sad that the last time my family went to Vallco Mall since 2012 when I move out of Bay Area 😔.
Soon to be 2,500 "units"
what mall is that in LA?
That mall is Vallco mall in Cupertino
Thank you
No problem. It's a ghost mall now. The entire bottom floor is closed, and most of the shops are closing.
To bad it looked like a happening Mall back in 1980 things change
coolzus Hell yeah Vallco is shit now! The place started going to shit after the 90's.
The only Asians in Cupertino at the time. Was such a big deal someone felt the need to film them.
What the hell is a Cupertino?
Jabbar Davis It's a city in California.
small ed yeah never heard of cupofchino Calif.
Check your Apple devises. Cupertino is where their headquarters are located.
Was wondering same exact thing, lol 😆
@@elainehott9303 Exactly. Who hasn't heard of Cupertino by now?
LOL ............... 1980 ......perhaps the worst era of automobile engineering and design. Just look at all the crap that passed for cars back then.
I knew there was high probability of seeing an Aspen/Volare. The footage didn't disappoint.
This was back when American cars lost out to Japan by sitting on the butts blaming workers.
