Excellent video! I railfan SMS Lines in Bridgeport often. It's always an experience seeing the old Baldwins in action. I'm looking forward to seeing #9 up and running in the near future!
As of October 2022 sms rail lines #9 is nearing completion the cab was put back on the engine also sms rail will start it's tourist operation on November 5th 2022 and the operation will fully begin in the spring of 2023, also they expect #9 to be completed in April of 2023.
Maybe. It's currently set to run for SMS Rail Lines for freight service (hence why I made this video) but I wouldn't be surprised if it visits the NH&I for an excursion in the future.
@@jeremyasher297 But then again, I think #9 is being repainted into its New Hope and Ivyland livery, so that locomotive visiting NH&I sometime in the future would make sense.
1:12 Notice anything special? The USATC S160 2-8-0 #611 pictured here deserves an episode of its own. It was fitted with experimental rotary cam poppet valve gear, but ultimately never got to prove itself. Ended up being used for target practice, and as a source of spare parts for other engines. Now it is/was being used by the T1 Trust to design #5550’s valve gear, to ensure a design is chosen that works.
That is a good point, I had not stopped to think of its distinction as the only steamer to be reactivated for revenue freight. Now if a short line would just do that with a mikado or something...
Who knows. If #9 is being restored, then hopefully it could sometime soon. SMS is almost finished with the locomotive's restoration, so I could see it returning to the New Hope and Ivyland in a few years.
@@brianfalzon6739 As of right now, the railroad doesn’t seem to have any plans for excursions, but they have confirmed that the locomotive will for sure pull revenue freight.
I like how 4023 was lucky to pull the last steam powered train on the VBR line. Sorry if I keep calling it 4023. I just like it’s original US Army name.
@@Pensyfan19 absolutely! I like the ELS, it's a fascinating railroad. Also, watching your vid on LIRR 404, I was genuinely surprised to hear my town's name in it. Maybe you could do a video on RMLI/Defiance Coal Company 1 someday? I've got some info on it if you need.
I heard and I can't wait to see it in action! Expect a remake of this episode sometime in the future once there's more footage of it in service (probably in April 2022 for the channel's 2 year anniversary)
@@mylesspear This was quoted from one of the sources I used for this video. "Some years prior, the driving wheels on No. 9 were swapped out and replaced with those from scrapped No. 7, while 9's valve motion and running gear turned out to be an odd mix of parts from both engines". I would guess the parts from two different engiens with varying amounts of wear and tear didn't help the rebuilding process, which was abandoned in 1995. I hope this helped.
A bit on number 9's ancestry,as it is a classic USRA[WW1],design,slightly modified for continental loading standards! P.S.,I grew up on the Oyster Bay branch of the LIRR,and saw the gamut of steam and diesel power, plus I went to high school in Pennsylvania, near Harrisburg, and saw the PRR Middle and New York divisions, close up! Lucky enough to see a Centipede in action, never forgot that,so your videos are more than just history,I was there,so thank you,for your diligence and persistence! 😇!

Who is here after SMS lines 9 is back in operation?
Not only will #9 be pulling freight on occasions but she will also be used for excursion trains on the Woodstown Central Railroad

I'm pretty sure 9 will pull exuations too because she does own coaches in pretty sure
If it does it will probably do it every once in a while

He’s kinda right Robert. Because at the opening, he said “To pull freight.”. So I think he’s right.

I hope number 9 visit new hope & ivyland one day and double heading with 40.

Maybe 9 can visit the Black River and Western one day and double head with 60 too.

@@brianfalzon6739 Probably not since that's further away and doesn't have any previous history with #9.
Isn't there two locomotives like #9,
I think two engines like this one run at the Calgary heritage park
That is correct! There are many USRA 0-6-0 switchers in preservation, and one of them is in that park. I subbed to you btw.
Where will #9 run on if she gets there to completion and what excursions will it be pulling in the future?
Most likely pulling freight for SMS Rail Lines (hence why I made this video), and excursion service would most likely be on the New Hope and Ivyland.

I'd love to see a video on Escanaba & Lake Superior 300, quite possibly the last operating Baldwin RS12 in the world.

The rebuild was halted because management didn’t want to pay for it and they shoved it off in the weeds and over the years key parts were trashed.
When will she be completed?
With restoration almost being complete, maybe mid 2021 or early 2022 the latest.
