- It's about time I uploaded an episode about a steam locomotive for this series since SMS #9! Here is the long awaited episode of Santa Fe 1010: the locomotive which pulled the record-setting Scott Special and starred in numerous movies and tv shows. Hope this was worth the wait and that you will enjoy the episode!

Good News: They are planning to restore Santa Fe 1010, back to operation again.
At least it's nice to know that these 2-6-2 prairies are get noticed by others considering most don't talk about these almost forgotten steam locomotives. And it's all a matter of time when lionel makes a lionchief plus santa fe 2-6-2 prairie cuz that would be great
Agreed. That's the purpose of this series: to cover little-known underrated locomotives that have an interesting history of their own.

Underrated channel
1010 looks so bizarre in that red livery, which reminds me of the famous gold livery once carried by CB&Q 5632. Her use in films reminds me of engines like SP 4449, Sierra No. 3 and GWR 5972 'Olton Hall', and it's great to hear that she's been preserved. If only the same could be said for 5632.
Incidentally I only recently found this R.E. series, and it hasn't taken long for me to enjoy it. There's always something fascinating about learning the history of specific locomotives. I used to do a similar series on my own channel, but I only got as far as episode 8 before cancelling it.

Hello back from Kansas.
Carbondale, 1st track pt. from Topeka on the ATSF, and President Holliday hosted a picnic to commemorate it in what's now Childrens Park (which is still a great place for train-watching today).
Think that's all historically correct; if not, welcome, any necessary corrections.
Its good to see this locomotive again. I used to Docent at the Museum and the 1010 was my fav!
I hear the California state railroad museum wants to restore the 1010 locomotive to operational condition now.
When they were converted to single expansion the classification was changed to 1050.

Vauclain compounds were used in New Zealand for a while, but were hard on the track, expensive to maintain and disappointing in fuel and water savings. Most were 2-6-2s and 2-8-0s from the Wellington and Manawatu Railway, with the NZGR converting one 2-6-2 experimentally,and in 1906 building a Mallet type 2-6-6-0 tank engine to help on the 1 in 15 (7%) Rimutaka incline. By 1930 all were gone.

Great video on 1010 and all but I must point out an error you made at 3:18, that I myself fell for the same trap while doing research too. The observation car seen is not Pullman observation “Muskegon,” but actually it is dining car #1407. Sometime after the Scott Special, #1407 was remembered #27 and converted to a radio observation car.
In this form it remains on display at the Double T Ranch at Stevinson, CA.”, tho it recently had a repaint into ATSF colors. People may say it’s “Muskegon,” but I can assure you it is actually dining car #1407. Other than that though, I applaud you for your thorough research and you deliver quite well a good history on 1010 and how she paved the way for fast train running on the Santa Fe! :)

@@Pensyfan19 Yeah, sadly the internet isn’t the greatest public resource available for Santa Fe history.... You gotta dig really deep to find what you’re looking for like in Facebook groups about the ATSF itself, or else having to spend a good couple of bucks to get some books. Most of the good stuff’s in the books unfortunately... especially when it comes to modelling resources.

Last time there seeing it, had just seen 3751, & that Prairie looked tiny, in comparison.
Wasn't one of these 2-6-2s (I think 1035) lost in a flood along with 4076 and and another 2-8-2 I think.
That is correct. "On July the 13th, 1951, 1035 - along with 3167 and 4076 - went missing in the Kaw (Kansas) River Flooding of that year." (Locomotive Wiki)

The A.T.&S.F. on those steam locomotives stands for Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe. I don't see why there's no railroad with a word like Atchisdaughter in its title.
One of these would make a pretty good little tourist loco. Wonder why nobody has attempted to restore one.
I want to believe the sign on the building at 6:30 says "Pasadena." I doubt people in that small California town are keeping that building maintained.
That station no longer exists as the line has since been converted into the LA Metro Gold Line since 2003. The building itself was demolished many years ago. Better to have the line converted as a light rail or subway service than to be entirely abandoned or built on like so many other right of ways around the world.
When BN merge with ATSF and became BNSF the whole passenger service has stopped, only freight are in service
Partially true. A fraction of passenger service on BN and SF was transferred to Amtrak in 1971 which still goes on to this day (Southwest Chief, Empire Builer, Capitol Corridor), and BNSF technically operates commuter service for the BNSF Line for Metra in Chicago.
