- This video describes my experience with traditional bedroll camping in the 1950s. I re-enact “outdoor skills and ethics” that I learned as a kid from my parents and grandparents. This early learning is supplemented with “outdoor and survival skills” from the Bushcraft UA-cam Community.
Learn how to: 1) make a comfortable bedroll, 2) sleep under the stars without a shelter, 3) start a campfire with flint and steel, 4) make potato, onion and beef stew and 5) keep eggs fresh without refrigeration.

My cordura tarp (8x8 foot, mil spec coyote brown, 500d, urethane coated back, 6.5 oz per square yard) was custom-made by malcolm coderre, The Hidden Woodsmen gear line: / 218025328348162 . This tarp is currently only made in a smaller size.

Great. Brings back memories of those days. I just received my 75 year Veteran Pin from the Boy Scouts so have done all this, with home-made gear, plus more modern stuff. But always had the Scouts do it the old way, just so they know how. Even camped on the Island, on Blackpool harbor in England, that Lord Baden Powell took his first troop to, on the 50th Birthday of his organization. Used old designs on home-made patches and met one of his two surviving Scouts there. He saw my troop, stopped, and sat on a stool and talked to us over an hour. We were just a hundred feet from their first camping site, where a display of their tents was set up. Boys Life photographer was there and moved us down to the display site. Boys sat in a circle, with me standing near the camp fire, and telling the story of how he started Scouting. Brrrrr Chills up my spine!

Once again I find myself watching haversack/bedroll camping vids. And once again, I find myself going to this gentleman's great videos on the subject. The knowledge he imparts, his obvious love of this stuff, and his simple ways just hit the spot. Once again, thank you, sir for making this cold Sunday morning with a coffee enjoyable.
one time while I was camping at Yosemite back in the 50's with my parents and brothers , a bear walked thur our camping site coming next to me licking my hair...back in those days I use Butch Wax in my hair....I guess the bear liked the taste of the wax because he came back the next night and did it again...the next year I did not use Butch Wax while we were camping at Yosemite..we used to camp at Yosemite every year , Campground 13 by the river, for about 15 years... greatest time of my life....I am almost 70 now my camping days are all most over.now its a trip to the KOA with my trailer and my sweetie of 48 years Its Oct 2018, I see that this video was from 2015...Nice video brings back feeling of joy of my youth in Yosemite
very interesting. I'm several years ahead of you, but had similar experiences. Yes, campground 13. I'm still camping primitive, but mostly in hammocks. My old body doesn't like the ground any more. Cheers, ken

@@ContraIsBased its Nov.24 2021 and I was going thur old UA-cam stuff and ran across your reply and it made me sad ..I am now 72 and looking for a small motor home to travel the southwest of US ..I do hope you get your ass out and start visiting local areas first then work up to the larger places... over nighter but get out and do things ..if you dont have the money go to the parks and walk around and try to pick out the different trees, birds, and dogs ..I have a book on how to identify trees its so easy to use and its fun because trees are everywhere.....goodluck

Thank you for sharing those truly incredible photographs of your father particularly those of him and his friends in scouting in 1920's. I myself currently am a ASM in the Silicone valley council. Seeing those photos sure made my day and I am going to share those with the boys at tomorrow's meeting.

There are a lot of factors in survival.

Great video, I'm glad that I found it. I grew up in the 1970s and 1980s camping like this in Michigan. I started primitive camping again a few years ago. One thing I've noticed is that there are a heck of a lot more ticks than there used to.

man talk about minimalist you dont see this anymore. i guess ive been spoiled by all my modern camping gear.
Think we all can say that. I mean sure stuff like waterproofing and such is great to have, but this is on another level.
Its easy when you are dry...when you are piss wet through for weeks at a time your old time gear is not great.
It good to learn survival at every level and gather the best of all time eras
I can find no flaw in your teachings, it's just like I learned at the feet of my father and grandfather. It's simple yet effective. The one thing I will comment on is your speech pattern. It's flows like someone who is trying to act but is shy of the camera. On most people it would have turned we away but for you it seems to work. I enjoyed this video immensely and look forward to watching more.

Oh no, I know people used to camp out like that a lot back in the day, but no way I'd ever prefer to camp like that over how we do it now. One of the few things I don't miss about the good olden days.

it is nice to someone to confirm about cooking and the eggs My son born in the early 80s jump up and down screaming if you allow eggs out more then two hours in room temp the eggs MOST BE thrown away my grandmother keep eggs up to 90 days in their root ceiler but she said a few times that she run out of eggs and flour for baking pies cake breads to sale to rail road staff going to Miami

Dad was a country boy and although he didn't have camping skills to pass on to us kids, we did learn how to lay out a proper garden. Grandpa was famous county-wide for his straight furrows, here in central Indiana. God bless you and yours! I'll keep watching. :)

I've gotta say.... Last year I came across your video of stealth camping and I really, really enjoyed it. I watched a few more vids and before I knew it, I'd been inspired to reconnect with nature, as a child and teen, I loved being in the hills (born and raised in W.V.) but as time went by and I became a family man with a job and life in general, I'd lost touch with nature. I hadn't been in the hills in 2 decades. Watching your videos inspired me to "get back"..... Since watching your videos, I spend one day every week in the hills, my wife and children go with me, things I'd learned about nature And surviving in the hills slowly started coming back to me and I began teaching my family survival skills and little tips and tricks of being efficient and self sufficient in the hills, we enjoy family time hiking, cooking, building fires, finding animal tracks and just being out away from the hustle of everyday life while we're in the hills. I think this man has the best life. I want to type so so much more but it was creepy so I had to delete it. But an inspiration to all outdoorsmen and animals who love every moment of life.

Im subbed. Im going to be 64 years old soon. Im ex military. I still do military hikes and practice survival at least once a week for the lsst 32 years. I have a 19.8 pound backpack that I made 61 days with. Im in south central Louisiana (Cajun country) which is hurricane prone. Been in 18 hurricanes and lost everything I had 3 times. In 2 hurricanes in Texas it was a month and a half before we got power back. There is a breaking point on being resilliant....im almost there. I enjoy going out and practicing with my equipment. Very self rewarding. Charles

My goodness how thing's have changed when it comes to camping :-) No flash tent, no temp rated sleeping bag, no portable gas stove and all the other trinkets and modcon's we carry these day's. Nice to see someone out there is showing us how it can be done without busting the bank. (and not being an idiot about it like some other post's I have seen)
On a separate note I remember hearing stories from my father's uncles about how they used to live like this for month's at a time when time's were tough back in the 1930's & 1940's and they had to walk to find work.
i really just love everything about this human and his camping and the family stories, so calming and peaceful and compassionate with nature.... le sigh .
Great video! After my time in finnish army i strated loving camping. Nowadays i camp quite a lot on finnish nature, and as true retro lover i've bought myself pretty fancy (but cheap, mostly second hand) late 1800's - early 1900's styled camping equipments and also clothes. Its quite strange for normal 24-y old guy like me using clothes that my gf calls "grandpa clothes", but they suit me really well and are practical, and im just being my weird me 😂

A simple way of camping and loved the sewing of the cotton sheet in the wool blanket, very smart as i've thought myself as well how to make the wool blanket feel less itchy! Great resourcefulness is best and I've loved you sharing this as there is so much outdoor equipment these days but I was looking for something more simple. Thanks!
