As a kid we used to have one of the last of the original swaggies drop by our farm every summer to work on our farm, we used to offer him to set up in our shed but he used to prefer to camp down the river as that was how he travelled walking up and down the Murray Darling basin. My brothers and me made him a sleeping platform in a willow tree that had been pushed over by a flood and we used to bring him walaby, rabbits and ducks we'd shoot for him, which was what he preferred, veggies from our garden, bread mum would bake and tinned fruit. He used to tell us stories about his travels up and down the river, including fathering multiple kids, he was Austrian and you could tell he used to be handsome. When he stopped coming one year we just assumed he died, illness, snakebite, etc; doing what he loved, travelling and living under the stars. The most free person I've ever known, now I'm getting to the end of my life, surrounded by things and stuff I look back at that time and person with fondness for the simplicity and honesty which existed back then.
Great vid Scotty that brought back memories of my childhood we only had a couple of old grey army blankets to sleep with, a frying pan and a billy to make tea, a few spuds to throw in the fire, water from the creek if we caught a fish or 2 or a rabbit we ate like kings those were the days ,that was in the late 50s I was about 11 or 12 years old loved it then and still love it now but with a little more comfort ,well why not I'm 73 years old and I think I've earned it
You’ve got one from Maine as well, I’m still young but I’m in the Boy Scouts and I promised myself that I will keep camping till my legs won’t take me out to the woods. I also want to post videos on my channel so others can share the same love for the outdoors I do, It’s a humble channel I own not like Scott’s but I want to help as much as I can.
Those were the day. The change is massive even since I was a kid. (I'm 34). I have a decent size property with a lot of bush. I foster care an Aboriginal kid and as part of raising a confident Aboriginal kid we do a lot of rough camping. I took one of the elders, who's in his late 80s, the other week and went out with only water, digging sticks and the rifles. (Spearing animals isn't humane). The first thing that always strikes me is how quiet the bush is compared to when I was a kid. So few insects, birds, and the little shuffly animals such as native mice, lizards, etc. As a kid you sometimes couldn't talk because of how loud the birds were. The old bloke said that he used to be able to survive indefinitely in the bush but now has to take food with him as he's never sure if there will be animals in his area. He used to lay on his back in a paddock and couldn't see the sky from horizon to horizon due to the black cockatoos. Now if we see 30 cockatoos in a flock we are astounded. We ate a goanna and some tubers but he said even the tubers were smaller than he remembers due to the lack of rain. I'm in the process of learning to breed insects to release into my bush. I also have set up water points in the bush. Hopefully it'll help the animals to breed in my area so by the time the kids can take over the property it's noisy again.
I don`t know if you have ever watched the movie" stand by me" but it also brings back childhood memories. At 12 years old I always went with other kids and my dog. I was almost 18 when I started camping alone. I bought my backpack when I was around 24. This let me go around 5 days but because I was an adult with a full time job, most of my camping was just overnight like before.
Hey Scotty, Mark is my name, and I have been following your adventures for a while. Yet, I have never given you a call-out. Buddy, I am a mid 60s young bloke! I really appreciate you and the no frills, Aussie way of showing how you do things without any b.s. Cheers mate, and take care…
So good to see a young bloke getting out there and doing it for real and... doing it with respect to our heritage, both indigenous and pioneering. Those swaggies were tough as old boots but still appreciative of our literature, music and culture and let's not forget our 'First nation' people. how tough were they! At 60 I am getting back to camping out of a backpack after decades of car camping and I like the idea of minimalist, traditional swaggie kit. Great video, you got a new subscriber.
Ist view, sub'd. I used to go camping with just a clear plastic sheet. Stuff some grass in each corner, shape it like an octopus and loop the rope over that. Was lighter than a tent. (Dome tents weren't around then.) Best tent ever. I've spent 100's of nights under canvas. The old army tents were great but not really for hiking. Good luck with 100k.
This had me thinking about the little ditty "Waltzing Matilda" and the "Jolly Swagman". Nice video. Get high concentration of DEET ! Fire hint - carry a can of cheap shaving cream to cover/put out the fire ... it blocks the air/oxygen - one of the three components needed for fire
Good trick to keep the mozies away at night, if you can find some termite mound, break some off and periodically burn small bits of it in the camp fire, trust me it works a treat, learnt it off of one of my old aboriginal mates.
The sounds of rain drops on the tarp when out camping or on a tin roof at night so relaxing .But one single drop in the kitchen sink all night drives you fkn insane . god i miss camping can't wait to get back out there great video scotty 👍
I love your attitude when so many things didn’t go as planned. Had to fight to find a spot, mosquitoes everywhere, and storms. You still showed the great outdoors with excitement and love. Sometimes that’s how it goes in the backcountry, but you just need to be in the moment and enjoy. Keep being awesome.
Reminded me of camping with Dad in a cyclone .Obviously the weather was kinder for you but still no floor in the old canvas ten . Thank you for the memories.
Cheers from the USA! Loved the video. I could hear those mosquitos buzzing. Rainy camping is always interesting and challenging. I once camped during a 17 hour rainstorm with pink lightning. I was on a hill, so didn't get flooded out, but a bridge was out the next day and some trees down and flooded areas. Camping is always fun, no matter what the weather. Take care and stay safe. Hoo Roo!
Your good humor even when obviously not much was going to plan is so refreshing! A lot of people would have been miserable and grumpy, but you kept seeing the bright side
Fantastic swag ideas mate, I don’t think it looks silly at all, you are really looking like a true bushie now. I’m so glad you did this. I think to keep the tradition going is a wonderful idea.
I’m right into our swaggy history. The poems from Henry Lawson are just awesome to listen too as well. We have such a great and fascinating swagman history. It’s great to see you embracing it, Scott.
Love this! Watched it a couple of times now. I’ve only ever taken dehydrated meals, so I’m interested in seeing how you make luxury food work. You even took butter!
Another great video Scotty. Hey the "disaster" type camps are often the best and give us a great laugh when we remember them many years down the track. As for the swag camping...yep it's a great way to camp. My swag was secondhand when I bought it over 40 years ago, so it's basic as they get, just canvas and a thin mattress no poles, no mesh nothing. I still love it and it works a treat still. Keep the videos coming I love watching them.
If l get stuck in the bush without mozzie spray, l always crush some gum leaves up and rub them where needed..seems to help. Best are lemon scented gum or citronella.
Good on ya Scotty! I have been busy with subscribing to channels again with this new device and your video popped up as a timely reminder... thank God! Keep doing what you're doing mate and as obviously a great influence for our younger generations and a good reminder of traditions that made our country great. I really enjoy reading the comments to your videos too. Great wealth of experiences. Have a good one!
The fly/swag setup has been my standard goto for a lot of years now. Been the whole way around Australia sleeping like that. My fitness is declining now, so thinking about adding a helinox stretcher to my hiking tent. Put your fire upwind of the swag to help with mozzies.
Wow…those mozzies! Think I’d have been tempted to stick my legs in the rain-jacket sleeves & wear it upside down with the bottom around my waist! 🤣 So great to show that things not quite going to plan doesn’t necessarily have to be an issue, or stop you from doing stuff (& that it can even add to the experience!)...& helps with feeling & bit less apprehensive/ more confident about trying things that might not work out as intended. Glad to see someone else other than me likes mint jelly too! 🙂
Solid bloke for always adding the Acknowledgment of Traditional Owners; also Black Cockatoos are a sign of rain :) For the mosquitos also - find eucalyptus / gum nut trees and get the leaves, brush/slap them against yourself and it’ll leave the scent on you or burn them in the fire, the oil from them is a natural repellent and the smoke will keep them away
We lived in Darwin once and the Mosquitos were so epic we had bites all over our legs for weeks and then weirdly they stopped biting us. We had to go to the doctor tho to stop the infections. Man that’s a heavily treed place and the black cockertoos were owesome I love that sound they make. Thanks for the video
All my dad's family are Aussie, so I guess I'm half... I really want to learn more about the traditional Aussie swag setup and use it over here. This looked like a fun trip. I enjoyed the video! 😊
Make a good light insect repellent by mixing half baby oil and half dettol. Soak a cloth in it. Keep in a plastic container or bag. Rub onto skin where needed. Charter boat operator from Cairns told me of this many years ago. Works a treat.
Ever use occy straps for your hootchie(tarp) instead of setting up your line thing? We used to use them almost exclusively to set up our hotcakes in about 1 minute.
Love listening to the different birds singing away in the background. Nice companions to have. Keeping the old traditions alive is brilliant Scotty, the old timers made the best from very little. Man oh man that rain & Mozzies Stay safe mate.
Hi Scott, I've done a few bedroll and tarp hikes over the past decades and I'll happily say that it's modern, ultralight gear for me (with some Bushman brand 80% DEET mozzie rep)! Traditional kit is much more hard-wearing, a lot easier to repair and in some ways, more multi-functional, but there aren't many of us going out for more than a couple of nights that need gear that's that robust (and heavy).
just as a side note, I really appreciate these kinds of videos where things arent going to plan, cause lets face it, that's the way it goes most of the time and its all about adapting.
The carry method with the two shoulder straps is really ingenious! Smart way of being able to more comfortably carry that gear over longer distances. I'd love to see a revision to this setup to swap the titanium frying pan for a more authentic steel billy. Billy tea by the fire? Don't mind if I do!
Great stuff. Reminds me of my time in the Scouts way back when. We see Black Cockies at our place near Canberra quite often. They are not all that common. The white ones outnumber them by 10,000 to 1. Love your swag and equipment. Nice and light but very effective. And great cooking skills. See you in the bush. Mike
Awesome video Scotty!...appreciate your efforts sharing your videos with us , extra points awarded for the added difficulties...Growing up we packed everything into a Bedroll secured with cotton rope from my moms cloths line draped over a shoulder...bit of a swag i reckon...life was slower and simpler back then...loved your setup...Cheers mate!...woods
Hey Scotty, another great vid mate, thank you. Just returned today from a couple night’s camp in the Alton goods box bug net and bathtub groundsheet… coincidentally (first time I had it out)… great product and a wonderful way to awake in the morning…. Suggest carrying some extra para cord though ….
The swagsetuplooks quite comfortable and practical. Beautiful bush setting, the bark colours sure come alive after the rain. We can tell how bad the mozzies were when the camera audio picks them up. That mozzie net looks like good stuff.
I'd never heard of swags before I visited Australia in 2016. Tried it when doing a tour of the red center. Must say I consider getting one and have it shipped here to Sweden. 😀
Awesome stuff. Like the Mozi net I am going swaging this weekend just got to get a good Tarp like yours but will do with what I have for now. Congrats on the subscription count.
Loved the video! It's always good to see the bush in the rain, it's so beautiful and serene. Also, best place to try out your singing voice, no one there to critique. 😅
Such a great vid! Pretty cool swag pack 🤙🏼 also that Alton’s tarp and box fly net looked so siic 🔥🔥 Sleeping under a tarp with rain is where it’s at 👌🏼 what a great camp. Take that pack out again asap! Cheers Scotty 🍻
Way to go. Great to see this kind of content. Also to see so many black cockies flying around they are far and few between these days. Keep up the great work buddy. 🙏🤜💪👏👏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼😜🍻
Based on the birds and the trees around you, I thought I had a reasonably good idea where you are located. Then you busted out those beers and I now I know your local. Good video. I might see you out and about the place if I haven’t already passed you on my travels
I just listened to "the band played waltzing Matilda" by Liam Clancy today. Such a sad story. Then this shows up in my fed. Well done Scotty. Love the vids.
This has me singing 🎶 Once upon a time a swagman camped beside a billabong 🎵...Australians have camping 🏕 in their blood and so enjoy watching their adventures. Have fun and enjoy! Cheers 🍻 Love the accent.
Nothing wrong with this video Scotty. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Only... I was keen to see how you dealt with the wet tarp, folding, packing, storing for the walk out etc.
Hi Scotty. Great video as usual mate. I just wanted to suggest that you avoid blowing out the Toaks alcohol burner. If you happen to blow it not quite right you might end up with burning alcohol on your face or spilling out onto dry grass etc. I have the same burner and always snuff it out with the base of my pot to suffocate the flame. 👍
Love your vids. I noticed when you were tying up your swag roll that when you pass the rope thru the loop to ty it off if you pass it thru twice and cinch it up it will stay tight. The same as when you ty your main line to the tree when putting up your tarp. It's an old postmans knot for tying bundles of letters.
Great show bub!! Anytime I watch and learn and improve my setup I’ll give the salute! Myself, move very slow with bow and arrow then set up for comfort. In the water or on land- it’s all sweet! Very nice show man!!
You should invest in a small folding stool bro. Hope you brought the Lucas PaPaw with you also! Ouch them mozzies are everywhere! Loving the bug box, never seen that. Sweet addition!

Wonderful story thank you for sharing.
Yes Wonderful thank you for sharing your memory it with us.
Truly touching. Thank you for sharing this living history 🙏🏻
That's pretty cool
Awesome.

Good on ye Rod, A true camper never loses the bug! Nothing like getting out into nature and surviving with what you have nearby. Salute from Ireland.
You’ve got one from Maine as well, I’m still young but I’m in the Boy Scouts and I promised myself that I will keep camping till my legs won’t take me out to the woods.

Just a little tip start a small fire and throw some green leafy sprigs on it so it smokes and blows across the shelter area, to drive off mosquitos.
So good to see a young bloke getting out there and doing it for real and... doing it with respect to our heritage, both indigenous and pioneering. I camp out of a backpack too but I use some traditional stuff and I’m a forager
Nice tip on the trucker hitch, way easier

Great stuff, Scotty. This is the most supportive comment section I've ever seen on UA-cam, and I've been here since the beginning. Keep it up brother!
those ghost gums at 4:05 are fantastic. Great video Scotty, thanx!
The beauty of the Aussie bush never ceases to inspire me. It's where my heart and spirit live.
Lovely work as always Scotty!! Swag camping is engrained into our Aussie history and certainly something that we would love to try!! 🤙
Also love how you've brought back your old brekky. OG Scotty viewers will know the mushroom and cracked egg breakfast 😍
Mint Jelly on lamb is so delicious.
Reminded me of camping with Dad in a cyclone .Obviously the weather was kinder for you but still no floor in the old canvas ten .
Thank you for the memories.
What a beautiful piece of Aussie paradise. Trees are stunning. Congrats on 90k.
Cheers from the USA! Loved the video. I could hear those mosquitos buzzing. Rainy camping is always interesting and challenging. I once camped during a 17 hour rainstorm with pink lightning. I’m right into our swaggy history. The poems from Henry Lawson are just awesome to listen too as well. We have such a great and fascinating swagman history. It’s great to see you embracing it, Scott.
Excellant video Scottie, thank for sharing your country with us.
Great video Scotty. Things aren't always perfect in the bush - thanks for having the confidence to show that.
Love this! Watched it a couple of times now. I’ve only ever taken dehydrated meals, so I’m interested in seeing how you make luxury food work. You even took butter!
Nice to be unplanned. Doing something heart felt. I like it.
Next u should bring your swag to the shallow river that would be so cool and bring a rod
Quick tip, put some logs under your tinder to elevate your fire. You'll have an easier time of it. Instead of fighting the moisture in the soil.
Sour Ales are bloody awesome! Great video, mate. Looks like you really got that swag slung nice and evenly for this trip. Good stuff 🤙
thanks for all the vids mate...for people that cant get out there because or some reason or so...it makes there day and mine..
Another great video Scotty. Hey the "disaster" type camps are often the best and give us a great laugh when we remember them many years down the track.

First time I've seen a swag. But yes we tarp camp with ground cloth set up. Much more comfortable than tent. Bet we could roll it up like that too!
Wow…those mozzies! Think I’d have been tempted to stick my legs in the rain-jacket sleeves & wear it upside down with the bottom around my waist! 🤣

Another nice video Scott. I got a kick out the phone call in the wild and you singing at the end. Glad you're having fun.

Hi Scott, I've done a few bedroll and tarp hikes over the past decades and I'll happily say that it's modern, ultralight gear for me (with some Bushman brand 80% DEET mozzie rep)! Traditional kit is much more hard-wearing, a lot easier to repair and in some ways, more multi-functional, but there aren't many of us going out for more than a couple of nights that need gear that's that robust (and heavy).
youre keen as scotty, the rains been rank and the mossies looked out of the control, lucky you brought the net! thanks for all the good info again.
just as a side note, I really appreciate these kinds of videos where things arent going to plan, cause lets face it, that's the way it goes most of the time and its all about adapting.
Swag and tarp, perfect camp setup. That shot at 25.00👌 beaut Aussie bush camp. Cheers for all the vids, hope you crack the 100k mark👍👍
I was told once that the swinging as mentioned at 32:00 is the waltzing mentioned in song.
Mike
This is great. You have inspired me to get out there for a swag camp! Your settup was really functional.
A great set up. The images from the camera are crystal clear. Thanks !
Wow the mozzies… such patience for things that can’t helped Scotty. 🙏🏻 Salute.
Thank you so much for showing the carry method.
Can't believe you braved going out camping with all the rain we've been having! Love the swag gear you just need to grow the beard
Great setup. Thanks for sharing and explaining it all.
Awesome video sir. I love seeing different types of camp gear and setups that people are using.
I have this box net setup and was hoping you would do a vid with one eventually. Great video man. I enjoyed this one as much as any of them. Legend.
Ahh the sounds of those mozzies and seeing them on ya is making me itchy from here! Lovely stuff as always though mate. Cheers from Melbourne
Cheers mate. Good work in the rain
Iam your fan since last year. You got 10k fan and I wish you got 100k subscribers soon. Thanks for your hard work and beautiful Australia natural.
ol facebook been advertising this stuff to me for ages, good to see how it all works and what you think of it. pretty sweet! thanks for showing us!
Good work mate! Such a nice, simple little overnighter to recharge. Love the outro too! Haha
I'd never heard of swags before I visited Australia in 2016. Tried it when doing a tour of the red center.
Must say I consider getting one and have it shipped here to Sweden. 😀
I can smell this video!!
nothing beats the smell of rain in the Aussie bush
Awesome stuff. Like the Mozi net I am going swaging this weekend just got to get a good Tarp like yours but will do with what I have for now. Congrats on the subscription count.
7:00 i actually saw ONE modern backpack with two front loading packs and one back load, it was pretty interesting!
also, you never explained what you did with the wet tarp. D:
Me; Stop tape! We'll come back tomorrow with long pants, long sleeves, repellant, and head net.😂 Seriously, nice vid, from USA.
Loved the video! It's always good to see the bush in the rain, it's so beautiful and serene. Also, best place to try out your singing voice, no one there to critique. 😅
Good on you Scotty mate, keeping traditions alive. Really enjoyed the video and I hope to see more like them
Such a great vid! Pretty cool swag pack 🤙🏼 also that Alton’s tarp and box fly net looked so siic 🔥🔥
Sleeping under a tarp with rain is where it’s at 👌🏼 what a great camp. Take that pack out again asap! Cheers Scotty 🍻
Love ya work mate. Inspiring. Thankyou. 33yr old. north Qld. Original south coast lad so I love ya vids dude. Great job. Keep em coming.
Way to go. Great to see this kind of content. Also to see so many black cockies flying around they are far and few between these days. Keep up the great work buddy. 🙏🤜💪👏👏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👌🏼😜🍻
I use my swag and tarp every time I’m camping…the 3x3 Alton goods tarp is a cracking bit of kit👍
I appreciate seeing a camping vid that isn’t “perfect” and I’m glad you showed the rest of us “couch campers” that camping is an all weather activity.
Your videos bring me a whole other level of relaxation ❤️ you always do such an awesome job.
Nice vid, my first time seeing your channel. I like your attitude and content. Looking forward to more, from New Zealand.
My friend, I look forward to your videos, you share such beautiful country! I totally dig the swagman roll set up 🤠
This has me singing 🎶 Once upon a time a swagman camped beside a billabong 🎵...Australians have camping 🏕 in their blood and so enjoy watching their adventures. Have fun and enjoy! Cheers 🍻 Love the accent.
Great to see your videos again Scotty
Love this video, roll the swag out!
Nothing wrong with this video Scotty. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Only... I was keen to see how you dealt with the wet tarp, folding, packing, storing for the walk out etc.
Thanks mate. With the tarp, I just stuffed it into its stuff sack and put it in my front dilly bag.
Love ur adventures, Scotty. Love the landscape, and I can smell the cutlets! Yum!
Came here to say this!
Scotty.... nice video. More about your Swag Kit, please. Love your videos. Thanks for sharing and best wishes.... Ax
I love that you left in the call from mum!
Great show bub!! Anytime I watch and learn and improve my setup I’ll give the salute! Myself, move very slow with bow and arrow then set up for comfort. In the water or on land- it’s all sweet! Very nice show man!!
Congratulations on 90K. All ways a great vids.
I liked this episode a lot. you seemed more care free and also it was nice to get a good features of the gear you used again.
Smart idea about the tea towel.
You should invest in a small folding stool bro. Hope you brought the Lucas PaPaw with you also! Ouch them mozzies are everywhere! Loving the bug box, never seen that. Sweet addition!
I really like your video mate. Well done and thanks.
Nice video Scotty. My dog kept freaking out every time he herd the mozzies 🤣 he doesn’t like them either.
