Bro thank you, watching other people review emulators (Dolphin/PCSX2 etc) on deck and seeing frame-pacing issues in their videos while they report how "flawlessly" it runs has been so annoying. Glad to see ya keeping it 100!
i've been noticing this on the Steam deck, i come from the PC with high refresh rates and any kind of stuttering or input lag always caused me motion sickness, i suffer with this quite bad, most people don't. Verified games like No Man Sky has horrible stuttering when you're flying just above a planet and The Long Dark has massive FPS drops because of the way the game detects controller input from the deck(thats right if you swap to mouse and keyboard the bug is gone). I can't play these games, 2 games i love. I try to report these issues and you get a lot of people saying they don't exist or its fine and all i can think is, these people must be coming from consoles and are used to a frame drops or no idea what they're actually looking for. I have 2 videos on my profile of it.
@@ricky_pigeon too real my man. Seems like "Runs great on deck" is thrown around so loosely, it's insane 😂 I hope they manage to implement those fixes you need brother 🙏🏿
This is honestly why i've been holding off on getting into emulation on deck, honestly knew 3.5 was going to improve performance for stuff like dolphin
@@theesurge321 I think that's the case due to the SMT performance issue that was fixed awhile back, and was easily worked around with a simple toggle in power tools. It was never a real problem. Game on!
Glad you brought up dolphins framepacing. I've had nothing but problems running paper mario thousand year door with some horrible weird duplicate frame every few seconds. Even going as far as helping the devs identify the issue. So glad there's some good news for 3.5 & had a feeling the l3 cache bug was at fault somehow.
This is my first video of yours I've watched. I fecking love your plainness and honestey. New old content with a new fresh take. Lovely video. Thank you for this video specifically.
Thank you for covering this! I've been waiting for this update for months so I'm very glad it's close to a full release. I'm gonna be waiting til it comes out of beta so it doesn't break my plugins and stuff so hopefully that is soon.
Doesn't matter that your content was "predictable", could easily have been you and your videos that got attention to this issue. Well done sir, also really really good content.
Love this video, big up you smart lad :) Glad to see a Ridge Racer fan too. Oh btw, I've tried SSX Tricky on PCSX2 from the Preview SteamOS 3.5 build and without the powertools plugin it isn't a constant 60FPS. But when you install powertools and turn off the SMT, SSX Tricky works at a constant 60FPS. So, maybe not all emulators work 100% with the SteamOS 3.5 update?
This is why all your systems should run an LTS Linux kernel. This bug could be fixed in days not month. Now with 3.5 being an LTS kernel I think valve could ship fixes in a greater pace. Almost all friday Linus Torvalds releases a new LTS kernel with security fixes and with big performamce regressions fixes.
I feel like I see this bug crops up in PC games too. Feels like the FPS halves and the perforance overlay will still report smooth full FPS. Would be nice if 2D indie games and AAA PC ports of yester-year could run at a smooth 60 with out gas lighting me. I tend not to mess with beta OS's but I'm hopeful this is the fix.
Totally! I also suffered from this issue when playing the PC port of MGSV. Curious to jump back into that one over the next week or so and see how it fares now.
@@ProjectEdandoes the cemu emulator have the same frame pacing issue. I just setup botw and all the stuff needed for the fps mod so I can run it at 40fps.
I mean, PCSX2 ran fine already, the issue is PCSX2 is a shitty emulator that introduces like 100ms of input lag regardless of what you do. Feels awful.
I feel as though input lag is a super subjective issue - I tend not to mention it in my videos unless it really impacts the game in question. Independent testing shows PCSX2 suffering from quite a bit more general latency than emulators like Dolphin and Xemu, but different people will feel this lag in varying degrees. Best thing I can recommend is to load both the PS2 and Gamecube versions of something like Burnout 2 onto your Deck, and see if it's something that jumps out at you.
only thing thats been bugging me with 3.5 and im not sure why no one has noticed this and it dosent matter if your running a pc game or emulation, everytime you press the volum rocker button it causes a frametime spike, its more noticeable with running emulation because some systems like neogeo you can see the game slow down and hear the audio distort, it even shows up in the frametime graph built into the deck, but maybe it just a bug in the preview build that will be cleared up with fulll release
Call me crazy but I swear the version of Dolphin that Emudeck would run when you played a game by clicking it as a non Steam game would run as bad as you say but not the standalone emulator if you ran it itself. I don't know if Emudeck installed an out of date version separate from the one on the Discover store but that's been my experience at least. Hopefully 3.5 though just eliminates all issues for everyone
Something must be happening to my deck, because dolphin has some horrendous frame pacing randomly. The graph shows it. Idk what to do :(. It seems to be only on dolphing. It seems to be noticable on 30 fps games
I have it’s in handheld mode and runs like in this video 30 to 18 with the (dynamic 30 mod) it’s playable but not a great experience has also crashed twice over a few hours gameplay. 40fps locked at 2x native resolution is just a flat out lie, not even gandalfs steam deck could pull that off
@@louismontrose8966There's like 5 graphical mods you need which include an fps improvement mod with repackaged textures and shadows and a 60 fps mod, you cap your deck at 40 just for the stability. Also using cryoutilities probably helps.
Emudeck has stopped working for me after 3.5 stable update. When I click on it I can see the Steam logo for a couple of seconds, then I go back to the Game mode Emudeck screen section.
Dolphin does this in windows too. Its a shader cache spool. Im not sure if they will change it in the future. Everyone says that the more you play the game the better it gets but whats the point if its flawless only when your done with the game?
Thank you for this. After watching your other videos and doing my own testing, I had resorted to running the PS2 version of basically all 6th gen multi-platform games. With 3.5, would you recommend making Gamecube the primary platform for those instead? It's hard to judge PCSX2 vs Dolphin holistically but I'm more inclined to believe Dolphin is the better emulator, especially with this bug fix.
Thanks for watching! On the whole, I would definitely recommend using Dolphin over PCSX2 for multi-platform games moving forward. I myself have even deleted most of my PS2 ROMS off of my Deck save for exclusives, and have reloaded a lot of my Dolphin backups back onto the device.
@enzospartan @@ProjectEdan Pretty much, if there's a multiplat 6th gen game, then the Gamecube version is consistently gonna be the better version than PS2, even disregarding their respective emulators (though Dolphin does of course run better). It's not a HARD AND FAST rule of course; the PS2 versions of the 6th-gen Harry Potter games, for example, are superior on PS2 despite also being on GC and Xbox. So it really depends on the given title you're trying to run, honestly. I just wish Xemu would get improved performance, honestly. So many 6th-gen titles had their definitive versions on that machine, and it usually runs at a third of the framerate on Deck :/
The only issue with TS2 on Dolphin in my experience is the analog aim. Compared to PS2 it feels very awkward and not smooth at all. Otherwise the GC version would be hands down the best way to play the game.
yes, as you mentioned on 11:30, i am wondering "what is this guy talking about" Not a single GC game with dolphin showed any issues on steam (at least my experience in last 8 months). It works so smooth, i even let all cores/threads run except in rogue squadron at the end, wii/wii U and even switch works nice.
Honestly my main issues with emulation on Steam deck come from the applications’ UIs always being terrible. Who thought it was a good idea to force mouse input on an application meant to be used with controllers? Especially on something like Dolphin; for emulating a console with such weird and bizarre controls, Dolphin sure doesn’t let you customize it with any ease whatsoever. Oh, and don’t get me started on EmuDeck. Such a clunky interface with no in-app ability to change control bindings. It boggles my mind that people praise it so much when it’s nigh unusable in its current state without heavy compromise. PPSSPP and RetroArch seem to be the only emulators that don’t half-ass their UIs anymore.
That's right. If you head over to your Steam Deck's settings, you can opt in to the Preview channel for updates - do note though that the Preview channel can update frequently, and temporrarily break other features within the Deck.
Thank you for the kind words! Hmm, I've not experienced that myself, however the Preview updates do have a tendency to be more unstable than Beta or Stable releases, so there could be a software quirk causing issues there.
