  • Melting Brass - Keys, Casings and Bolts Into Bars and Rounds
    In this video, I'll be pouring a brass bar, as well as some other brass rounds from bullet casings, brass keys, and miscellaneous nuts and bolts using my new Devil Forge Furnace or Foundry.
    I absolutely LOVE using my Devil Forge on my Metal Pouring Journey!
    I'm excited about smelting using my new forge, the new cast iron ingots and graphite molds, and with any luck, we'll have some beautiful bars and rounds to add to my stack.

    Those yellow fumes are dangerous. I hope you're wearing a respirator! You're vaporizing the zinc and all that yellow stuff is the residue from it. When you say there's a little bit of copper in your rounds, what you should be saying is there's a little less zinc in your rounds. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. Zinc melts at a lower temperature than the copper, and it also has different densities. If you don't stir the metal before you pour it, the heavier copper will sink to the bottom, and the zinc will float to the top. That's probably why you're getting more copper in your later pours. The longer you keep the metal molten the more zinc will burn off and vaporize. Try using a carbon stirring rod, You can buy them on Amazon.

    Those looked really good rob, some good control on those pours, brass is a little more difficult with all that zinc boiling off and making the smokescreen when your trying to fill the mold. The more you melt the brass the more of the zinc you will boil off, leaving more of the copper, The brass on the first bar looked a bit overheated, I have overheated brass a few times, and it starts to look like that and gets a bit stringy hanging over the edge of the crucible. Catch you on the next one.

    The bolts you used were for electrical connections and there are many grades and in saying that have a higher levels of copper in them.. Some higher end lugs may even contain a percentage of sliver and even more exotic connectors have gold. One of the factories I worked for poured sliver, gold and platinum into round pigs and then extruded them into wire for manufacturing electrical contacts.. But they always smoked their molds with an Acetylene torch for a better release. But yours seem to be dropping out pretty easy. Love your videos and keep them coming! Thanks for sharing!

    • @williamfindspeople4341
      @williamfindspeople4341 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah I get Silvertip electrical leads from a friend of mine who works in the business. It's a lot easier to take the silver off with an acetylene torch then to smelt it because of the steal that is attached to get far hotter than the silver. But there's one thing you can look forward to Silver and Gold will not evaporate. You can boiled gold at 5173 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature of the surface of the Sun is 9800 degrees Fahrenheit.

    I melt brass in the devil forge no problem. Had a lot of trouble with aluminum. Maybe temp was too high? Brass really sticks inside my 2kg cast iron mold. A 3 pound bar was reduced to 1.4 pounds after I kept grinding it down. The "air pocket" went over an inch into the bar. Probably a noob pouring error? Good vid. Thanks.

    • @williamfindspeople4341
      @williamfindspeople4341 3 роки тому +1

      That's correct too high of a temperature brass melts at 1650 degrees Fahrenheit. As aluminum melts at 1221 degrees Fahrenheit. That's a difference of 429 degrees Fahrenheit. The best way to get your aluminum to melt evenly is to time your heating of metals. Then you will know how long to leave your aluminium in the Forge. Most poor pours come out looking like Moon bars because the temperatures are wrong LOL just ask ROB.

      I make sand molds but I also pour figures and but you can get molds at Walmart believe it or not. A 30 Oz mold runs you about $60. I also use OTOOLWORD, they sell good Gold Silver and graphite Ingot molds for about $33. Amazon has free shipping. Rob may offer that through his Amazon account. You have to be very careful not to use gold and silver Ingot molds to melt copper and brass and aluminum because the temperature differences what will happen is you warped the sides of your molds and they will look like hour glasses.
      If you noticed in Rob's video when he was pouring brass into his silver and gold molds the back of them were white that's because the temperature of brass is too hot for the molds that he was using.

    I was glued to the screen. I Love smelting. My uncle taught me back in the 1960s when I was a boy.
    Okay, here's a surprising thing brass is not a metal it is actually a crystal. An alloy of COPPER and ZINC, in proportions which can be variety into achieving rare variety mechanical and electrical properties. Depending on how much you mix of each replaces the atoms and creates different densities. The smoking at the beginning is a sign of high zinc content very toxic. The reason bullet brass is the best is because it is used to make bullets and it cannot explode in the chambers so it has to be more pure atom content. You cannot escape the copper. There are really two different types of brass property one is called Indian brass and the other one is called Chinese brass. It is known as the poor man's gold.
