Maybe it's silly to write this here to you directly but... I am not sure where to begin. You see I have studied history and have modded historical games, I even worked on two dlcs for historical games but in the end it went south. I continued as an amateur to mod, for fun, by passion and a part of me wants to see me build something interesting and impressive on a time period never or barely explored in games, but I am not sure where to start. Maybe the depression helped to make that unattainable but as that is more and more starkly behind me, the desire to one day try to make a magnum opus is becoming a bit more concrete. And yet I don't really know how to code, maybe I should start there. But I have all those historical interactions in my head...
It seems impossible to accomplish and also just around the corner.
It may just be an idea floating in my head, but I kinda want to make that into a good strategy game.

What companies like Ubisoft fail to realize is just how broad the definition of diversity is. They see diversity as just different skin color or sexual preference, when there is so much more to it than that. it's also about those with life experience and a wealth of skills & talents. If they want true diversity, they should hire those who are exceptional at art, animation, music, writing, programming etc. That is your diversity right there, people of a range of different talents and unique ideas to bring to the table. That's how classics are born.
Well said. Well said.
I've said this many times before: the most important kind of diversity is that of your audience, not within the media itself. If people from all backgrounds and walks of life can enjoy your game/movie/show/story, then it is truly a work of art.
That cost money though and these corporations would to spend as little money as possible. So instead they go the cheap and self termination route. I’d like to make a quick distinction, it is still absolutely acceptable as a creative to make a game for yourself. Tell the story that you want to, make the game play how you envision. But when the game dilutes from your pure heartfelt passion to something that resembles a husk of its predecessor due to outside influences then that is when you need to come to your senses.
There’s a difference from passionately telling your story, and passionately pushing your politics. One is a beautiful and moving piece that rouses emotions and connects with people, the other is a shallow egocentric void of emotion.
It is not at all a bad direction to make games "for yourself", it drives you to create something that you personally would call a good game.
The recently failed games failed exactly because barely any of the indoctrinated activists turned up to play them, and that proves that the creators did not make them for themselves. The "woke" ideologues see video games only as vehicles for propaganda and methods of brainwashing and mind control, not entertainment. That's why your sense of self-preservation gets triggered, even if it's hard to pinpoint what exactly you dislike about a certain trailer or gameplay preview.
Great developers make games for themselves, and activists make games to "normalize" their doctrines and recruit followers.
I've been working in games professionally for over 13 years and I would like nothing more to help grow younger people who are truely interested in learning. After a while, you can just tell who is in it for their ego and who is driven by spark inside them, you can just see it in their eyes.

But the funny thing is you posted this video right as I hit an emotional low point just a few hours ago. So thank you so much for posting this. I really needed to hear these words of encouragement. I appreciate you!
Never give up! Fail a hundred times if you must do that on your way to success and fulfilling your game dream. AAA industry will collapse. When this happens, you need to be ready to fill in the creative gap and opportunities.
I relate to that feeling, I felt the same way leading up to my game's release. And it kinda failed too, a couple negative reviews really discourages you, they can speak way too harshly and it's more than just discouraging. That being said, I intentionally never advertised 'solo development' so it can be judged objectively, and I guess I got what I asked for, it makes the good reviews more reassuring at the same time. I've started doing smaller projects for the unreal marketplace and that definitely builds up confidence with prepping and releasing products.
Every failure is one step closer to success.
I work for a company whose first game failed quite spectacularly. I was just a middle manager at that time. We spent over a year restructuring and finding ways to recover the sales, turn things around. Unfortunately, it didn't seem to work, so I've been promoted to the CEO position to try my shot at it. I also didn't manage to turn things around (was too late, quite frankly) mainly because I lacked the experience in this area. This has been overall a colossal failure and waste of money and resources, but I'm still doing everything I can to improve things, even a little. And eventually this situation gave me an opportunity to join a new company where I'll know the pitfalls and mistakes that were made before and I'll have more agency over how the new company is going to be run. You never know where your path will lead you, but you have to do your best and stay true to yourself to be ready to capitalise on a new opportunity. The success of games cannot be predicted, but you can find partners and teammates to help build your dream game and release it to the public. Any shortfalls that you know you have can be covered by having the right people next to you. People is everything in games. So build a network and a close circle of talented people who'll both help you out when you fall, and motivate you to strive for greatness. If you follow this path to its end, you'll find success for sure.
Get back to work!

I like the message here. That was the thing that made the old internet great, people made an effort to give back to the communities they were a part of. Making your own game would be the ultimate example of that, but if you lack the drive or the means to do that there are still plenty of smaller ways to give back to the gaming sphere. Whether it be writing a guide or making a mod or fanart or making a quality level pack or aggregating information or making useful charts or even just helping a stranger get an achievement. Really just contribute something that takes more effort than complaining on twitter
14 years ago when I was 13, my friends and I were in an xbox live party talking about making the game we wanted to play. It spurred me to learn programming to make games. I learned c#, java, javascript (not the same as java), python, and a little bit of 3d modeling and drawing.
I periodically put in applications and never got a bite. To be fair I never really made a portfolio and my experience is a disjointed mess, a couple of game jams and prototypes. I don't really know how to make small things.
I gave up at the beginning of this year. I couldn't get paid for what I taught myself to do, what I love to do. I'm just tired of trying to keep going...
You are not alone. So many people are in the same boat as you. Take a break and catch your breath. Your fire and passion for making games will return in time.
Maybe you can work on smaller scale projects and make things you can manage on your own. This results in a higher chance of project success since relying on remote team members often ends in development hell.
You may eventually find a team who needs your specific skill set.
If this is something you truly care about, hang in there.
It's a huge mountain to climb, try and focus on a smaller area, whatever it is that you love, whether it's the programming side or the art side. Don't try and do it alone, the path of a solo Dev is long, hard and lonely. Even working with 1-2 other people will lift the burden massively and increase productivity exponentially. Even just having somebody to bounce ideas off helps improve those ideas. As long as there is real passion from every team member you can make something small and beautiful.

Yup that's how the 00's tech culture was. It's crazy how quickly it got taken over by political types in the 2010's. What an awful decade.
Looking towards all the indie studios that produce cool, weird or unique ideas makes me realize gaming isn't dead. We're just not in the golden age anymore, when the most well-funded games also had the most talent
Remember the 2000s and even early 2010s, the amount of blueprints that came out during that era for successful games to follow has singlehandedly sustained it to this day. While all the rest crashes and burns, people still resort to the tried and true games of the past. Thats the power of ingenuity. Without it, there's no industry. Thus, the gaming industry will correct itself automatically.
Bad ideas and creators are doomed to fail eventually.

Any game that puts activisim, ego, and greed ahead of storytelling, creativity, and true love for gaming, will not get a cent from me. We'll bleed DEI dry like and unwatered weed.
The game industry is just a piece of what gaming is, not the other way around as they think. They can fall, we'll still be around. There will always be some game to play, there will always be people with talent and passion creating games, no matter the budget.

Oh, the suprise you've got coming.
@@mywifesboyfriend5558 Who? What surprise? Can I unwrap it before christmas?
i have two game projects, but i stopped with them due to the lack of programming knowledge. i used to draw so i can design characters, nowadays i can't force my eyesight with it anymore, but there are good PC tools that i can use to make characters/sprites/etc. unfortunately i can't make things work as i want.
still, i paused those projects and now i'm focusing in a story i'm making. i'm pouring all my knowledge, and a study i did about animes created between 1963~2010 on it. i now need a way to spread it(without having my work stolen, ofc).
I would say the industry needs someone like you even more! Great video! Its always nice to listen to you even if sometimes i dont fully understand everything you say!
He speaks the truth. I think we have finally reached the point where everyone is finally standing up and saying enough is enough. These companies have forgot the first rule of media: give the people what they want. They have also forgotten how important the audience is as well as the value of talent. This will not end well for them.
Your speech gave me the chills man! Thanks for the motivation! ✊
I started coding and working with game engines 3 years ago when I was 29. I've grown more in this time then at any point in my life. It is tough though, but we must march forward.
When you hire on anything other than merit you are guaranteed to perform worse. It's by design
Amen brother! VIVE LA RÉVOLUTION!
I remember first getting into gaming. I remember Master Chief plastered over everything. I remember the Doom Eternal soundtrack played over every epic moment in movies and games. I remember opening UA-cam to see Markiplier playing a small little horror game called Five Nights at Freddy's. I may not have been there for the beginning of gaming, maybe not even it's prime, but for some time I thought I would see the end of gaming, the death of a greatness I had barely set my toes in, but now, now I know I have barely seen the beginning.
I have a small list of indie games that could easily rival Ubisoft, Sony, Activision combined, I'll put those here for you all to check out and support, if you want you can put your own lists in the replies.
1. Blight: Survival (medieval zombie apocalypse)
2. Diesel Knights (Titanfall 2 but better)
3. Armor and Aces (extremely detailed and realistic multicrew vehicle combat that puts milsims to shame, each player doing a different job inside the tanks)
4.PVKK, short for Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant (yes, it's in German. You get to control a massive planetary defense cannon and shoot down space warships).
I am a 53 old commercial software dev.
I am passionate about good stories and sci-fi and fantasy literature.
I love art and design.
I am a Guillermo del Toro's fan.
I will become an indie game dev, and give my best to create good games, i promise.
It's easier said than done at this point, but we need the change!
"LOOK AROUND! SOMEONE has to do something! WE have to do something! We can make a difference again! The world needs us now, more than ever! Are you with me?"- Winston (Overwatch)
I cannot speak for everyone else, but I for one, want to rebuild the gaming industry.
I want to bring fun back into not just video games, but games as a whole.
Sungrand is deleting comments that are exposing him since few days
That won't happen unless you stand up to the liberals.
Do YOU have the balls?
@@mywifesboyfriend5558 Of course I do, I'm tired of these people destroying what I love.
Unfortunately I think my animation days are behind me. Perhaps one day I'll return to it, but I need to build an entire career before I'll feel safe committing time to any projects. You're an inspiration Sungrand. I hope other's with your strength of character can steer the industry back towards prosperous horizons
For me, gaming peak in both the PS2 and Xbox 360 years, can we go back to those times, please?
No
Yup it was the best of times to be into gaming. I'd say the golden age was 90's - 00's
HE DONNED THE SUIT!!!
Amen, brother! I'm a solo Indiedev, its a really though path but I'm loving it!
It is tough but we aren't alone. We are in this together. Let's do it.
@@sungrandstudios True. Your videos are a breath of sanity and good sense. Thanks a lot for such amazing work!
This is the same conclusion I came to a few years back. I got into the AAA game industry back in 2016 and I was thrilled at first but that enthusiasm went away the longer I was in the industry. Around 2020 is when my morals and ideals were mocked by my coworkers, but they didn't know they were mocking my morals because they just assumed everyone agreed with them. I also noticed that entertainment as a whole was declining. I wanted to change professions but wasn't able to successfully transition to something else. I then realized that I should stick with the game industry. Entertainment is important. Entertainment guides society, and if all the entertainment is garbage, it will lead society down hill. That's when I came to the conclusion that I should stick with making video games because there needs to be people who are making good entertainment with stories that have good values and messages.
Yeah I'm also planning to start an indie too as a side hobby after my job, but I'm having a difficult time finding a guide that has an actual start to finish meaning from drafting up to publishing and everything in between.
There are tons of guides on the how to use engines and how to 3D model, that's how I learned how to use unity and blender but there's no talk about the business side of publishing or putting your work out there.
There was a talk from the maker of "the first tree" here on yt.
I'm sure you'll find it interesting.
We are one of the last industries in the world where the corporations have not taken absolute control, we SEE their evil and they fear us for it. Once the final scraps of their influence has been completely removed from the game industry, we must go on to try and reclaim other industries. This is far bigger than just videogames. Spread the truth.
Ooof, the effigies line was damn good
And seriously, I bet there are a LOT of Male devs, and especially White Male devs who are very passionate and talented who are terrified to speak up, criticize or critique anyone. And especially anyone who is non White, non straight, or has any of the modern day labels. I bet their criticism is unheard, buried, or they are labeled behind their backs and I bet that must be horrible if they are inside any of these companies that are deeply rooted in ideology. I pray they get the courage to speak up and don't get penalized for a trait they have no control over, or they leave and go somewhere their passion and drive can flourish.
THIS IS SPARTA!!
This is why im glad we have new publishers like bigmode and the anapurna individuals who have yet to re-form
I have a steam deck and I’m glad many AAA companies doesn’t support Linux. I’m having a blast with many indie games that otherwise I would never know about. Probably I would be grinding a battle pass instead having fun.
We the gamers are ready to support these up and coming talented Indy industries ❤
The development time is so long because the under qualified developers have to actually learn how to do their job. Explains why the games always come out amateurish and incomplete.
This is an accurate assessment.
When people are hired for reasons other than what they have to offer
Game company CEO's and self-help guru's are shook by the mere existence of this man.
hey mate nice job at making these type of video's you are a great person and speaking out in a clear and professional opinion. It takes a lot of guts to make this type of content. I find you to be inspirational and make me want to make video games.
Thank you for the support. I hope you might give it a try and enjoy turning your ideas into games.

Thanks for saying this. It really feels empowering when you tell us that we can when the industry makes it seem like we can't even get our foot in the door
You can do it. We can make things better. Let's work together.
the prez of gamers is back baby
This video is timely. I finish my game dev course in November this year, and I am the exact opposite of a 'diverse hire' (straight, white, Christian male).
I grew up on PS1/Xbox/PS2/DS, etc. where the focus of games was to make them enjoyable and groundbreaking.
I loved hearing stories of smaller extremely passionate teams (like early days Bungie and Netherrealm/Midway) getting together to make greatness.
Modern games place so many obstacles in the way of an enjoyable experience that I just can't find myself getting excited about any new releases.
I hope to find/join/start a team of equally passionate developers so that I can recapture the pure joy my childhood-self experienced and pass that on to the next generation who've only known games in their hideous modern form.
Gonna be hard to play or make games when the electricity gets cut off.
You all miss the big picture.
Ubisoft tencent buyout has darkened our horizons.
tencent would probably improve things at ubisoft
@@r99716Nope. They are MORE woke.
@@mywifesboyfriend5558 how so? tencent is a chinese corporation. wokeness isnt tolerated in china.
@@superturkle There is a rumor that Tencent used DEI to sabotage Ubisoft. Ubisoft was dumb enough to fall for their trap, and as a result their games suffered for it, which causes the value of the shares for Ubisoft to drop, which means Tencent can buy them up at a lower price and own more of the company... eventually buying it out.

I got a computer animation and digital art degree but it was like 10 years ago I got it and the bums who taught the course had no work placement options or taught me ways to actually get into the industry. Skills aren’t razor sharp to create magnificent digital art pieces and the 3D apps needed to brush up on modelling and animation cost a mint. Over time, I just had to get dead end jobs to meet ends meet.
If I saw a program which sought to refine my skills to that of a professional, pay to let me use high end apps that can bridge the gap in my skills, pay me even minimum wage so I can pay my bills, can do it online since I live in backwater UK and lack the enthusiasm or energy to move to big cities, and more importantly: don’t judge me for being a straight white man with zero political leanings, I would jump at the opportunity.
The bigger the company the worse your odds are as a whyte man. We have to start over from scratch.
It is frustrating that this is true.
Yup big tech actively discriminates and celebrates doing so. Such a terrible culture.
Thank you, gamedev John Connor. I am trying to make my own game and your speech casts Inspiration buff on me.
I'm glad I can bring stat boosts to you.
