I suspect your guys' hype levels for Return of the King are going to to be 10x this movie and I'm here for every second of it. Some non-spoilery lore bits about some passing questions you all had: Legolas, Boromir and Gimli (and his father Gloin, another Dwarf legend) were not called to Rivendell in the books by Elrond, but all arrived on their own, for their own reasons - but at the very same time as Frodo / the hobbits, Aragorn, and Gandalf. Legolas came as an emissary of his father Thranduil - he's a prince, and while his age is never specified hes between 300 - 3000 years old! He was sent to tell Elrond and Gandalf that Gollum (who they had kept captive/safe at Gandalf's request after Sauron had already found/ tortured and released him) had escaped from their palace in Mirkwood, and his whereabouts were unknown... Boromir arrived because he had been sent by his father to find Rivendell (which in the books they thought was possibly just a legend, since no one knew where the "hidden valley" was), to get answers from Elrond about what his prophetic dream might mean. They didn't know what "Isildur's Bane" was, and Denethor didn't know it was The Ring, because all knowledge of the Ring had been forgotten or lost in Gondor. In the books, Faramir actually had the dream first, and more often! After setting out, it took Boromir 111 days of riding and searching to find the Rivendell on his own. Gimli and Gloin came to tell Elrond their home kingdom of Erabor had been approached by agents of Sauron, who were looking for "rings" in exchange for 'friendship' with Mordor .. and they wanted council on how to proceed. At the same time, they wanted to see if there had been news from Moria. Years before, a large portion of the Dwarves had left Erabor and relocated to Moria, in an attempt to reestablish their ancient and long abandoned homeland. However, they had not heard anything from Moria for five years and were worried something had happened. Elrond called the Council since, to his mind, it was obvious that these travelers had all arrived not by chance, but because they were fated to do so. He decided that all those present, as representatives of their respective races, would sit together, exchange all their information they had, and decide what would be done with the Ring ... since the Ring was at the center of all their reasons for being there, and had come to Rivendell at the exact same time as their arrival.
1:10:35 Legolas was on his way from Mirkwood to report to Elrond that Gollum has escaped the dungeons of Mirkwood, where king of the Mirkwood Thranduil (father of Legolas) held him since Aragorn captured him. However he was late, because Sauron has already captured Gollum, squeezed the information out of him, sent his riders to get Frodo and almost got the ring back. Gimli was on his way from Erebor to report to Elrond that there has been a Nazgul sent as a diplomatic envoy from Sauron to Erebor, promising to return one of the Rings of power back to dwarves if they gave him any information regarding the "Baggins" that was employed by king Thorin Oakenshield on his quest to recapture the kingdom of Erebor from the dragon 60 years earlier. Dwarves however declined this offer and immediately sent Gimli and company to Rivendell to inform Elrond about that matter.

Some added context to Elrond's little speech to Arwen: Elrond's twin brother Elros also chose to be counted among Men. Elrond has already watched a beloved family member age and die. Elves are immortal and tied to the world - if they die, their return to Valinor and are rebodied (though it's very, very rare for one to come back to Middle-earth). When Men die, however, even the Elves do not know what happens to their souls. So should Arwen embrace mortality, Elrond would be parted from her _until the end of the world._ On a side note: Elros, after making his choice, became the first King of Numenor and is a direct ancestor of none other than Aragorn. So Aragorn and Arwen are first cousins, just sixty-plus generations (and thousands of years) removed!
Aragorn is one of the "dunedain", which are the men from an island called Numenor that sunk thousands of years before. It's basically the Atlantis of this universe, and those few who remain of that people are granted longer life
Guys, about Aragorn's "race": Thousands of years ago an island existed between Middle Earth and the Undying Lands, called Numenor. It was inhabited by a great, proud, wise and powerful nation, the Numenoreans. Due to their great relationship with the Elves and the Valar, and some special, heroic deeds they were blessed with a very long life span. But then Sauron, disguised in fair form ended up there and slowly corrupted them. He convinced their king that if he invaded the Undying Lands, he will be immortal (that's not how it works, it was a plain lie). He also made them worship Morgoth, the chief evil of the first ages, to whom Sauron was only a servant. They performed gruesome rituals with human sacrifice. So the last king, Ar-Pharazon gathered a huge fleet and launched an assault upon the Undying Lands, he landed with his army on those shores. The Valar refused to fight against men and appealed to the supreme God, Eru Iluvatar, who sank the entire fleet and also the island of Numenor. He also bent the shape of the Earth which until that point was flat, and the Undying Lands were left outside it's circle, so that only Elvish ships can sail there on a secret path. Some of the Numenoreans who remained faithful escaped in time to Middle Earth, their leaders became the first kings of Gondor and Arnor (the latter being the now destroyed Northern Kingdom that Aragorn was referring to). Aragorn is their direct descendant, they are the Dunedain (= men of the West), and although their bloodline is now greatly mixed and diluted by intermarriage, they still have a significantly longer life than other men.
The pressure on Boromir when he goes to the council is immense, not only his father's command and plea but the reality of decades of warfare against the orks and the slow defeat they have been suffering. The world was closing in on Boromir, he had the weight of his people's life and future on his shoulders.

A few comments. 1. The reason why Aragorn lives so long is because he has elf ancestry. Actually, he's descended from Elrond's brother, which makes Arwen and him cousins (although about 35 times removed). 2. Saying Arwen is like the moon is almost right. She's literally called "Arwen Evenstar," so she's often compared to the evening or the evening star. 3. In the books, the wargs (the animals that attacked the people on the way to Helm's Deep) are supposed to be giant wolves. In the movies, they're more like hyenas. 4. Although there's no official explanation for why Wormtongue cries when he sees Saruman's armies, my theory is that he didn't realize until then that Saruman's intention was to utterly destroy Rohan. Wormtongue probably just thought Saruman intended to overthrow the king and take over, probably with Wormtongue in a position of power. That was a "what have I done?" tear. 5. "What would have happened if the first arrow didn't slip?" Probably nothing would have been different. It made the orcs angry who were already planning to kill everyone anyway. At worst, the battle started a couple of minutes early. 6. The guy with no eye: They achieved this with the simplest effects possible. They cast an actor who was missing an eye. 7. "A wizard always arrives precisely when he means to." For example, he arrives at his enemy's front line just in time for the first light of dawn to blind his enemies.
The lifespan of Aragorns people (the Dunedain) can vary from like 120 -500, which is how long Aragorns ancestor Elros lived. Elros was also Elronds brother so Aragorn and Arwen are related lol

7:57 "The Northern kingdom" refers to Arnor, which was a kingdom founded by Isildur´s brother Anarion, whereas the "Southern kingdom" is Gondor, which was founded by Isildur himself (the one who took the One Ring from Sauron), with the help of his father Elendil. Gondor grew weaker, lost its king, but remained the most powerful human kingdom in Middle-Earth. Arnor on the other hand was completely destroyed, and fractured into small pieces which gradually depopulated and turned into a wasteland. One of the biggest fortresses of Arnor was Amon-Súl, the tower where Frodo got stabbed by the Nazgul. Arnor existed before Shire, and the place where Shire is located used to be a part of Arnor. Aragorn was the descendant of both Isildur and Anarion, but his family originated in the Northern kingdom of Arnor. The family bloodline from the Southern kingdom of Gondor is completely gone, but Aragorn has a bloodright for the throne of both of those kingdoms. He´s also a descendant of Elros, brother of Elrond, who as a half-elf chose to be a man, and due to that lived for well over 400 years. This enormously long lifespan gradually grew shorter, but even 44 generations later, Aragorn still has the potential to live up to some 200 years of age.
Denathor (Boromir and Foramir's father) was actually a good man. One of the things that you're not shown in the movies is that he had a seeing stone, like Saurumon, and the Dark Lord was using it to manipulate him.
Yes. I don't know why the movie departed so much from the book story; the change didn't make for a better story. The movie Denethor is someone everyone hates, the book Denethor was ultimately driven insane but he did want to save Gondor - a character that the reader could have some compassion toward.

Guys amazing detail.. Look at 37:24 .. While Haldir is greeting Aragorn, Elvish soldiers didnt respond anything..But..While Legolas and Haldir greet each other, at that exact moment Elvish soldiers return to them and do respectful military standing salute. Because Legolas is the son and heir of King Thranduil. He is the prince of the Elven kingdom of Mirkwood. And even if Legolas is not their prince, the elves have great respect for the dynasty
The men from Numenor, the Dunedain, were of the race of men(human) but their ancestors had been given the island of Numenor and been blessed with long life. After the island of Numenor sank(long story, Sauron also had a hand in that) the surviving Dunedain settled two kingdoms, Arnor in the north, and Gondor in the south. The kings of both kingdoms were from the same family(Elendil and his sons Isildur(who became King in the north) and Anorien(became King of Gondor). Eventually the north kingdom was destroyed, but the line of the kings survived, and Aragorn is the last of that northern line. In the south, the line of the kings ended, but Gondor survived, and fell under the rule of the Stewards who rule in the name of the Kings. So, Aragorn is not technically King yet, but he is the only one that really has a real claim to the Kingship.
Aragorn gives so much Aura that no reactor seems to notice that during the Battle of Helms Deep, he’s the one commanding Elves despite being a Man, and no one questions it.
Understanding Elrond & his daughter Arwen (& Aragorn by extension) - Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, both half-elven who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents; (Eärendil & Elwing), both “half elven” made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help against Morgoth(who was making everything worse than a living hellscape for 100s of generations) which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age. The valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand. After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor. ✨✨✨✨✨ He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Only the family of Elrond can choose to be immortal or mortal in which Arwen did. Aragorn is the direct descendant of Elros, thats why he has a long life. The average lifespan of a Numenorean at their height was 500 years maximum! Now remember too that half elves are a common thing and whenever they did come together it was always significant !❤❤❤ Remember this is the SHORT version, there are so many moving parts that will make you want to dive into the books or the audio books or even do reaction videos to the famous lore videos by the biggest lore channels out there! When you’re done the trilogy try doing reaction videos just like Moviejoob did now with the lore recently as well as OmarioRPG. They live as long as the world/Arda/Ëa does. Essentially. Which is why they are so in synch with the world around them and the nature responds to them ! Think of when Legolas walked ontop of all that snow on the Mountain of Caradhras!! They continue to endure as long ad the world itself does. (Arda) and speaking of age, Legolas is also 3000+years old by the time he becomes a member of The Fellowship Of The Ring! If you look back on the original trilogy movies: The fellowship had a 3000year old Elven PRINCE in their party. And a clandestine angelic being who was Gandalf originally known Olòrin to those such as Galadriel who knew him when she lived in Valinor, Elrond also knew would be one of the only others who’d know this save Círdan The Shipwright(one of the surviving eldest Elf in the world.). ❤️❤️❤️❤️ But even he was a few generations down from the original elvish peoples to awake to the stars) & kin to Thingol who also is a semi distant cousin to Legolas as Legolas’ grandfather was the close cousin to Thingol(same with Galadriel’s Husband Celeborn through his father, their capital within Lothlòrien was named after his father(Caras Galadhon) Galadhon being the name indicating that which belongs to the father. And a 87 year old Númenorean man named Aragorn!, a 335 year old Dwarven Prince named Gimli. And as a microcosm they resembled the coalition of all the races of middle earth uniting under one banner which is another reason it sort of metaphysically set into motion the world uniting at the macrocosm ! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Galadriel's Phial (gift to Frodo) is something really special. light & dark have a spiritual dimension in Tolkien. way back before the First Age Valinor was lit by two very special Trees that waxed & waned in opposition to each other. a master craftsman Elf named Fëanor fashioned three gems that captured their light, the Silmarils. (And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.) Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Wars were fought over them called the Kinstrife after Morgoth had the Trees destroyed the Silmarils were the only light from them left and he stole them as you may remember, they changed hands a few times & eventually one was left after one fell into the sea & another was lost in a pit of magma. a Half Elf named Eärendil (the first one! Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian. 💕💕💕💕 The fountain of Galadriel's Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount. I've left out about 90% of the story but it's quite important & central to the story of Middle Earth. for her to give the Phial to Frodo is quite extraordinary. its light does burn & blind Shelob (that's the spider's name) but doesn't kill her outright. oh also, before he was put in the sky to guard the last Silmaril Earendil had two children, Elrond & his brother Elros the first King of Numenor. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it. 💕💕💕💕 The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. The Door of Night was a portal in the distant Uttermost West that leads to heaven, and/or the Void. Eärendil's ship Vingilot was taken by the Valar from the rim of the world, passed through the Door and was lifted into the "oceans of heaven". PS: Eärendil is ELROND’s half Vanyar Elf half human father, that father was the son of the great Tuor of the great stories of The Children Of Húrin book!❤❤❤❤ Aragorn is a CLOSE descendant of a direct bloodline to Elros(Elrond’s Twin Brother) The title of half elven (Peredhel) was due to the combined history of Beren&Lúthien, his mother Elwing was the granddaughter of Lùthien! Eärendil was the husband of Elwing. The true half elf; son of the best elvish women ever who rescued hundreds from the highest of elvish kingdoms(Gondolin); her name is Idril & one of the best most powerful men around named Tuor. Who later on when they went to Valinor together through their own way lead to him choosing to be counted as One Of The Eldar for Idril. Eärendil did the same for Elwing. ❤
Gandalf, Saruman (and 3 others) are angelic beings disguised as old men sent to guide and advise the peoples of middle earth. Gandalf was the only one who continued to guide and advise and that was why he said "he was sent back" and "he was Saruman and he was suppose to be".
Tolkien said that the Blue Wizards were vital in the resistance against Sauron in the East. They were sent in almost a special mission to go East and keep down the numbers of Men who would join Sauron's army. And they were indeed successful in this, and without the Blue Wizards efforts in the East, the armies of Gondor, Rohan, and the "resistance" led by Gandalf would have failed as Sauron's armies would have swelled and straight out over-whelmed them. There are also some less than kind writings about Radagast, who basically became lazy. He was a "good" person, by aiding Gandalf a few times, but with regards to his mission became lazy. And in truth, Gandalf actually knew more about birds and nature than Radagast, which was supposed to be Radagast's "specialty."
Some trivia… The Scene where Gimli says, “toss me,” was not filmed in this movie. After production had wrapped on RETURN OF THE KING, Peter Jackson said, hey! Why don’t we have a scene where Gimli says toss me! So, after RotK was finished, they shot that scene. He wanted to insert it into The Two Towers because in Fellowship of the Ring Gimli says, “no one tosses a Dwarf!” The practical effect of Tree Beard was 17 feet tall! So Merry and Pippin were way up there to shoot those scenes. That would have been fun to do!
The Dunedain are the descendants of the first King of Numenor, an island kingdom West of Middle Earth which no longer exists by the time of LOTR. This king was Elros, the brother of Elrond (Arwen's father). Their father was a Man who married an Elf-maiden, and their children were given a choice to share the fate of Elves (immortal and bound to the world till the end of time) or the fate of Men (mortal with an unknown fate after death). Elrond (who is called "Elrond Half-Elven" in the books) chose to share the fate of Elves and is therefore immortal, but Elros became mortal albeit blessed with a much longer lifespan than normal Men. All of his descendants have longer lifespans because of this, including Aragorn
one of the things that I find interesting (and a little irritating) in the way that the battle for helm's deep was portrayed onscreen was the uruk-hai approach TO trying to take the castle. The gunpowder bombs were of course a game changing element, that none of the defenders could have foreseen. However, the make up of the orc army was highly overburdened with pikemen (I understand SOME emphasis given the cavalry of Rohan is well known and well respected through out middle earth). They simply did not need THAT many. Furthermore, the orcs brought little siege equipment: no catapults or trebuchet. Just ladders, which as seen on screen were not THAT difficult to defeat. I feel like Saruman was putting all his strategy on breaking the wall with gunpowder and not putting much thought to all the other ways the defense can and would be mounted. I suppose he was relying on brute force to win the day. I would think a person of Saruman's wisdom and long life would be at least a little more cautious, a little more deliberate. Yes sometimes the large anvil dropped on your opponent wins the day, BUT you have to HIT your opponent proper in order for THAT sequence of events to play out.
Gandalf didn't actually do anything himself to blind the army of Isengard. He arrived at dawn in the direction of the sunrise. Right place at the right time, as always.
Guys wonderful cameo at 43:40 The man who threw a spear was Peter Jackson (The Director).. Also he was at the first movie.. The Man Who was eating the Carrot at outside of Poncing Pony Pub.. (Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin was just arrived at there remember?) .. Also there is one cameo at the Last Film..
(Elves near extinction) They couldn’t help as much as some may have wished at the final battle of we Helms Deep: By the Third Age of Middle-earth, the population of Elves had significantly decreased from their numbers in the earlier Ages. Additionally, many of the great Elven kingdoms had already fallen, & the remaining Elves had scattered across Middle-earth, making it difficult to organize a large-scale military force. Furthermore, Elves had a deep respect for the natural world, and were hesitant to engage in battles that could harm the environment. They preferred to use their skills in magic and healing to assist in battles, rather than fighting directly. Despite their reduced numbers and military prowess, Elves still played an important role in the events of the Third Age. They were instrumental in the quest to destroy the One Ring, and many fought bravely in battles against Sauron's forces. However, they had to be strategic about their involvement, as they knew that they could not sustain heavy losses without risking the extinction of their entire race. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ The exact population of Elves in Middle-earth during the Third Age is not explicitly stated. However, it is generally believed that their numbers had greatly diminished by this time, with only a few remaining Elven kingdoms & settlements scattered across Middle-earth. Some sources estimate that there may have been only a few thousand Elves left in Middle-earth by the Third Age. Gandalf (and the rest of the Wizards like Saruman) are one of the "Maiar"... likely the equivalent of Angels in this world. WIzards were sent by the "Valar" - greater god-like beings from Valinior (where they and a lot of the Elves reside_ to aid the people of Middle Earth in their war against Sauron.. but they were cloaked in the forms of old men to lessen their normal powers. They were sent more as guides , not to wage open war, and they only used their power at great need.. (and as you se, they needed a conduit - their staffs- to channel it. (The ultimate "God" in this universe is called Eru Illuvatar - he is the one who resurrected Gandalf and sent him back to Middle Earth "until his task was done". Sauron and the Balrogs were also Maiar - they were corrupted by the 1 evil lesser god - Morgoth (remember Gandalf sad he fought and killed the Balrog of Morgoth - Morgoth.. the balrogs were his chief lieutenants back in older ages of Middle Earth). And of course, Saruman was corrupted by Sauron (and he also feared him, though in the books he is more written by Tolkien as someone trying to play both sides and wanting the Ring for himself so HE could rule Middle Earth)

Explaining Elrond & Arwen+Aragorn part 2 - But since the giant Númenorean island toppled at the heart of the sea between Middle Earth (Endor) & Valinor by manipulating the people slowly degenerating lifespan, tricking Ar Pharazôn into attacking Valinor and back then that land was place one could physically see & travel towards. Eru Ílluvatar the AllFather shifted Valinor into an in between limbo space and which caused the world to turn round or semi spherical which caused a giant tidal wave so huge it plunged Númenor to the bottom of the sea but Sauron’s fair (Annatar-Lord Of Gifts) form was pinned to the bottom of the sea by the island of Númenor so now he can no longer take fair angelic form ever again! Now he’s far less beguiling. But sadly the waves also crashed into entire coastlines of middle earth too. See. Even gods actions have consequences! It’s why the Valar among other reasons do not take direct action anymore as it’s always caused something catastrophic. It’s also why Gandalf explained what he could do with the one ring. The Valar essentially took an unspoken vow to not take direct action. When Ainur clash: land masses sink to the bottom of the sea like Beleriand in the the War Of Wrath etc. this was why the sun and moon from the last flower and fruit being set in an area where Morgoth couldn’t go to ruin them. He followed Tillion and Arien and got majorly burned by Arien as she was evidently stronger than him. And even the Valaraukar that became balrogs were of similar type of Ainur to Arien. Same as when Eru didn’t attack anyone. Moving Valanor into a limbo zone between Eä and the rings of the world which caused arda to bend and caused tidal waves that didn’t just sunk Númenor. It destroyed entire coastline of middle earth and killed many innocent people. People who think Eru intentionally levelled middle earth don’t know much about the AllFather and free will and how sacred it is!

Faramir had a dream about the Council of Elrond, he was the one appointed by the Secret Fire to be part of the Fellowship but Denethor denied his petition and sent Boromir in his stead, which ended up getting him killed. Faramir would probably resist the Ring better than his brother. (the Secret Fire refers to the will of Eru-Ilúvatar, the creator god of the world. Gandalf tells this to the Balrog, "I am a servant of the Secret Fire")
@@Asari547 yes, it happens in the second book and he is more concerned about Boromir than the Ring. He questions Frodo about a poem that predicts the arrival of a halfling who bears Isildur's Bane but he never tries to send them to his father. The book shows that the lore of the Gondorians acknowledges the danger that Isildur's Bane poses and Faramir takes it seriously. He is very much righteous, intelligent and much more confident than in the movies. After questioning him and seeing that he doesn't lie, he sends them on their way. What I meant in my previous comment was that despite being exposed to the Ring for a longer period of time like Boromir was, he would resist its influence much better. Edit: Denethor's story is different too, as it is more obvious that the use of the Palantir alienates him a lot. In the books he was much more virtuous until Sauron attacks his mental health through it.

The dream that Eowyn tells Aragorn about is actually a dream that Faramir and Boromir had, Boromir went to Elrond to ask about this dream and just happened to be there when Frodo showed up. Gimli was accompanying his father Gloin to warn Elrond that a messenger had appeared at Erebor asking about the ring and trying to recruit the dwarves for Sauron. Legolas and the Elves were there to report that Gollum had been released from their prison. Faramir also never was tempted by the ring, this change isn't as dumb as it is infuriating because it does a disservice to Faramir.

If you guys are curious, after you watch Return of the King, however you choose to do so, there are meme remixes of "They're taking the Hobbits to Isenguard" and "Boil em mash em, stick em in a stew." They are funny vids i just don't remember which other scenes and lines are used in the remixes, so i wouldn't want you to accidentally get spoiled on anything by watching the vids first.
In books orcs have personalities and produced sexualy. Uruks saurman prodoced were actually over 50 years old not couple of days or months and born from slime pits. There are orc woman there was an orc named bolg who wanted to make his father Azog another chief orc proud.
You keep saying "what a great line", these are, taken from the book. Tolkien had the idea to write a book while at university, he then joined the army and fought in WW1 and a lot of what he witnessed is in the books, he was the only one of 4 who joined up to live. The hobbit was written in the 30's LOTR came out in the 50's with the last one being completed in 57, if I am correct. Tolkien has influenced all fantasy writers since, though some say "no, I came up up with my own idea's", Really!
Some trivia… The Scene where Gimli says, “toss me,” was not filmed in this movie. After production had wrapped on RETURN OF THE KING, Peter Jackson said, hey! Why don’t we have a scene where Gimli says toss me! So, after RotK was finished, they shot that scene. He wanted to insert it into The Two Towers because in Fellowship of the Ring Gimli says, “no one tosses a Dwarf!” The practical effect of Tree Beard was 17 feet tall! So Merry and Pippin were way up there to shoot those scenes. That would have been fun to do!

I can never get over the fact they cut the Boromir flashback from the Theatrical release. It's so universally loved and acclaimed

Some non-spoilery lore bits about some passing questions you all had:
Legolas, Boromir and Gimli (and his father Gloin, another Dwarf legend) were not called to Rivendell in the books by Elrond, but all arrived on their own, for their own reasons - but at the very same time as Frodo / the hobbits, Aragorn, and Gandalf.
Legolas came as an emissary of his father Thranduil - he's a prince, and while his age is never specified hes between 300 - 3000 years old! He was sent to tell Elrond and Gandalf that Gollum (who they had kept captive/safe at Gandalf's request after Sauron had already found/ tortured and released him) had escaped from their palace in Mirkwood, and his whereabouts were unknown...
Boromir arrived because he had been sent by his father to find Rivendell (which in the books they thought was possibly just a legend, since no one knew where the "hidden valley" was), to get answers from Elrond about what his prophetic dream might mean. They didn't know what "Isildur's Bane" was, and Denethor didn't know it was The Ring, because all knowledge of the Ring had been forgotten or lost in Gondor. In the books, Faramir actually had the dream first, and more often! After setting out, it took Boromir 111 days of riding and searching to find the Rivendell on his own.
Gimli and Gloin came to tell Elrond their home kingdom of Erabor had been approached by agents of Sauron, who were looking for "rings" in exchange for 'friendship' with Mordor .. and they wanted council on how to proceed. At the same time, they wanted to see if there had been news from Moria. Years before, a large portion of the Dwarves had left Erabor and relocated to Moria, in an attempt to reestablish their ancient and long abandoned homeland. However, they had not heard anything from Moria for five years and were worried something had happened.
Elrond called the Council since, to his mind, it was obvious that these travelers had all arrived not by chance, but because they were fated to do so. He decided that all those present, as representatives of their respective races, would sit together, exchange all their information they had, and decide what would be done with the Ring ... since the Ring was at the center of all their reasons for being there, and had come to Rivendell at the exact same time as their arrival.

1:10:35 Legolas was on his way from Mirkwood to report to Elrond that Gollum has escaped the dungeons of Mirkwood, where king of the Mirkwood Thranduil (father of Legolas) held him since Aragorn captured him. However he was late, because Sauron has already captured Gollum, squeezed the information out of him, sent his riders to get Frodo and almost got the ring back.
Gimli was on his way from Erebor to report to Elrond that there has been a Nazgul sent as a diplomatic envoy from Sauron to Erebor, promising to return one of the Rings of power back to dwarves if they gave him any information regarding the "Baggins" that was employed by king Thorin Oakenshield on his quest to recapture the kingdom of Erebor from the dragon 60 years earlier. Dwarves however declined this offer and immediately sent Gimli and company to Rivendell to inform Elrond about that matter.

Some added context to Elrond's little speech to Arwen: Elrond's twin brother Elros also chose to be counted among Men. Elrond has already watched a beloved family member age and die. Elves are immortal and tied to the world - if they die, their return to Valinor and are rebodied (though it's very, very rare for one to come back to Middle-earth). When Men die, however, even the Elves do not know what happens to their souls. So should Arwen embrace mortality, Elrond would be parted from her _until the end of the world._
On a side note: Elros, after making his choice, became the first King of Numenor and is a direct ancestor of none other than Aragorn. So Aragorn and Arwen are first cousins, just sixty-plus generations (and thousands of years) removed!

Aragorn is one of the "dunedain", which are the men from an island called Numenor that sunk thousands of years before. It's basically the Atlantis of this universe, and those few who remain of that people are granted longer life
Guys, about Aragorn's "race":
Thousands of years ago an island existed between Middle Earth and the Undying Lands, called Numenor.
It was inhabited by a great, proud, wise and powerful nation, the Numenoreans.
Due to their great relationship with the Elves and the Valar, and some special, heroic deeds they were blessed with a very long life span.
But then Sauron, disguised in fair form ended up there and slowly corrupted them. He convinced their king that if he invaded the Undying Lands, he will be immortal (that's not how it works, it was a plain lie).
He also made them worship Morgoth, the chief evil of the first ages, to whom Sauron was only a servant. They performed gruesome rituals with human sacrifice.
So the last king, Ar-Pharazon gathered a huge fleet and launched an assault upon the Undying Lands, he landed with his army on those shores.
The Valar refused to fight against men and appealed to the supreme God, Eru Iluvatar, who sank the entire fleet and also the island of Numenor.
He also bent the shape of the Earth which until that point was flat, and the Undying Lands were left outside it's circle, so that only Elvish ships can sail there on a secret path.
Some of the Numenoreans who remained faithful escaped in time to Middle Earth, their leaders became the first kings of Gondor and Arnor (the latter being the now destroyed Northern Kingdom that Aragorn was referring to).
Aragorn is their direct descendant, they are the Dunedain (= men of the West), and although their bloodline is now greatly mixed and diluted by intermarriage, they still have a significantly longer life than other men.
The pressure on Boromir when he goes to the council is immense, not only his father's command and plea but the reality of decades of warfare against the orks and the slow defeat they have been suffering. The world was closing in on Boromir, he had the weight of his people's life and future on his shoulders.

A few comments.
1. The reason why Aragorn lives so long is because he has elf ancestry. Actually, he's descended from Elrond's brother, which makes Arwen and him cousins (although about 35 times removed).
2. Saying Arwen is like the moon is almost right. She's literally called "Arwen Evenstar," so she's often compared to the evening or the evening star.
3. In the books, the wargs (the animals that attacked the people on the way to Helm's Deep) are supposed to be giant wolves. In the movies, they're more like hyenas.
4. Although there's no official explanation for why Wormtongue cries when he sees Saruman's armies, my theory is that he didn't realize until then that Saruman's intention was to utterly destroy Rohan. Wormtongue probably just thought Saruman intended to overthrow the king and take over, probably with Wormtongue in a position of power. That was a "what have I done?" tear.
5. "What would have happened if the first arrow didn't slip?" Probably nothing would have been different. It made the orcs angry who were already planning to kill everyone anyway. At worst, the battle started a couple of minutes early.
6. The guy with no eye: They achieved this with the simplest effects possible. They cast an actor who was missing an eye.
7. "A wizard always arrives precisely when he means to." For example, he arrives at his enemy's front line just in time for the first light of dawn to blind his enemies.
Seeing you guys watch this for the first time is a blast. Def need to see you two watch more stuff for sure. Subbed.

7:57 "The Northern kingdom" refers to Arnor, which was a kingdom founded by Isildur´s brother Anarion, whereas the "Southern kingdom" is Gondor, which was founded by Isildur himself (the one who took the One Ring from Sauron), with the help of his father Elendil.
Gondor grew weaker, lost its king, but remained the most powerful human kingdom in Middle-Earth. Arnor on the other hand was completely destroyed, and fractured into small pieces which gradually depopulated and turned into a wasteland. One of the biggest fortresses of Arnor was Amon-Súl, the tower where Frodo got stabbed by the Nazgul. Arnor existed before Shire, and the place where Shire is located used to be a part of Arnor.
Aragorn was the descendant of both Isildur and Anarion, but his family originated in the Northern kingdom of Arnor. The family bloodline from the Southern kingdom of Gondor is completely gone, but Aragorn has a bloodright for the throne of both of those kingdoms.
He´s also a descendant of Elros, brother of Elrond, who as a half-elf chose to be a man, and due to that lived for well over 400 years. This enormously long lifespan gradually grew shorter, but even 44 generations later, Aragorn still has the potential to live up to some 200 years of age.
Denathor (Boromir and Foramir's father) was actually a good man. One of the things that you're not shown in the movies is that he had a seeing stone, like Saurumon, and the Dark Lord was using it to manipulate him.
Yes. I don't know why the movie departed so much from the book story; the change didn't make for a better story. The movie Denethor is someone everyone hates, the book Denethor was ultimately driven insane but he did want to save Gondor - a character that the reader could have some compassion toward.
You both are very sharp to get the story and the nuances in it right away. I had to see the movie many times over before I even get some idea of what it is all about. While Haldir is greeting Aragorn, Elvish soldiers didnt respond anything..But..While Legolas and Haldir greet each other, at that exact moment Elvish soldiers return to them and do respectful military standing salute. Because Legolas is the son and heir of King Thranduil. He is the prince of the Elven kingdom of Mirkwood. And even if Legolas is not their prince, the elves have great respect for the dynasty
The men from Numenor, the Dunedain, were of the race of men(human) but their ancestors had been given the island of Numenor and been blessed with long life. After the island of Numenor sank(long story, Sauron also had a hand in that) the surviving Dunedain settled two kingdoms, Arnor in the north, and Gondor in the south. The kings of both kingdoms were from the same family(Elendil and his sons Isildur(who became King in the north) and Anorien(became King of Gondor). Eventually the north kingdom was destroyed, but the line of the kings survived, and Aragorn is the last of that northern line. In the south, the line of the kings ended, but Gondor survived, and fell under the rule of the Stewards who rule in the name of the Kings. So, Aragorn is not technically King yet, but he is the only one that really has a real claim to the Kingship.
Aragorn gives so much Aura that no reactor seems to notice that during the Battle of Helms Deep, he’s the one commanding Elves despite being a Man, and no one questions it.
Understanding Elrond & his daughter Arwen (& Aragorn by extension) - Elrond’s Twin Brother Elros, both half-elven who can choose to be mortal or immortal because of their parents; (Eärendil & Elwing), both “half elven” made a great sacrifice and went to Valinor to ask for help against Morgoth(who was making everything worse than a living hellscape for 100s of generations) which lead to the greatest events in the early first and second age.
The valar listened to them, that led to a great hosts of Valar and Maiar And Vanyar Elves went to Middle Earth that laid waste to Beleriand.
After the War Of Wrath, the valar rewarded them for their sacrifices. They can choose to be elf or men, including their children. They chose immortally, but never return to Middle Earth because they thought that their twin sons had died. But they didnt die. Elrond chose to be immortal while his twin brother Elros chose to be mortal. He founded the Kingdom of Numenor.

He lived in Numenor Island and blessed with a long life that include his descendants Those men who fought for the war were rewarded a long life but not their families or children. Galadriel's Phial (gift to Frodo) is something really special. light & dark have a spiritual dimension in Tolkien. way back before the First Age Valinor was lit by two very special Trees that waxed & waned in opposition to each other. a master craftsman Elf named Fëanor fashioned three gems that captured their light, the Silmarils. (And it’s same power and light was drawn into it from the very firmament where it now stands amongst the stars as Eärendil himself (Elrond’s father stands watch over The Doors Of Night where Melkor still is held until fate holds him no longer.)
Everyone who saw them was captivated by them, even the Melkor(Morgoth); the first Dark Lord. Wars were fought over them called the Kinstrife after Morgoth had the Trees destroyed the Silmarils were the only light from them left and he stole them as you may remember,
they changed hands a few times & eventually one was left after one fell into the sea & another was lost in a pit of magma. a Half Elf named Eärendil (the first one! Who was Elrond’s father.) came into its possession & sailed it to Valinor as a gift to the Valar to ask for their help in defeating Morgoth, which they did. the Valar turned it into a star & hung it in the sky with Eärendil as its guardian.

Mirror is lit by light captured from the star Eärendil & her Phial has water from the fount. I've left out about 90% of the story but it's quite important & central to the story of Middle Earth. for her to give the Phial to Frodo is quite extraordinary. its light does burn & blind Shelob (that's the spider's name) but doesn't kill her outright. oh also, before he was put in the sky to guard the last Silmaril Earendil had two children, Elrond & his brother Elros the first King of Numenor. Tolkien's lore is deep & vast & the Silmarils are at the center of it.

The Star of Eärendil is the light that shines in the horizon both in the morning and the evening. It consists in a boat raised by the Valar and led by Eärendil, who carries a shining Silmaril while watching the Doors of Night. Gandalf, Saruman (and 3 others) are angelic beings disguised as old men sent to guide and advise the peoples of middle earth. Gandalf was the only one who continued to guide and advise and that was why he said "he was sent back" and "he was Saruman and he was suppose to be".
Tolkien said that the Blue Wizards were vital in the resistance against Sauron in the East. They were sent in almost a special mission to go East and keep down the numbers of Men who would join Sauron's army. And they were indeed successful in this, and without the Blue Wizards efforts in the East, the armies of Gondor, Rohan, and the "resistance" led by Gandalf would have failed as Sauron's armies would have swelled and straight out over-whelmed them.
There are also some less than kind writings about Radagast, who basically became lazy. He was a "good" person, by aiding Gandalf a few times, but with regards to his mission became lazy. And in truth, Gandalf actually knew more about birds and nature than Radagast, which was supposed to be Radagast's "specialty."
In the books they explain how exceptionally accurate and strong Hobbits are when throwing stones. They’re deadly with them

Why don’t we have a scene where Gimli says toss me! So, after RotK was finished, they shot that scene. He wanted to insert it into The Two Towers because in Fellowship of the Ring Gimli says, “no one tosses a Dwarf!”
The practical effect of Tree Beard was 17 feet tall! So Merry and Pippin were way up there to shoot those scenes. That would have been fun to do!
The Dunedain are the descendants of the first King of Numenor, an island kingdom West of Middle Earth which no longer exists by the time of LOTR. This king was Elros, the brother of Elrond (Arwen's father). Their father was a Man who married an Elf-maiden, and their children were given a choice to share the fate of Elves (immortal and bound to the world till the end of time) or the fate of Men (mortal with an unknown fate after death). Elrond (who is called "Elrond Half-Elven" in the books) chose to share the fate of Elves and is therefore immortal, but Elros became mortal albeit blessed with a much longer lifespan than normal Men. All of his descendants have longer lifespans because of this, including Aragorn
one of the things that I find interesting (and a little irritating) in the way that the battle for helm's deep was portrayed onscreen was the uruk-hai approach TO trying to take the castle. The gunpowder bombs were of course a game changing element, that none of the defenders could have foreseen. However, the make up of the orc army was highly overburdened with pikemen (I understand SOME emphasis given the cavalry of Rohan is well known and well respected through out middle earth). They simply did not need THAT many. Furthermore, the orcs brought little siege equipment: no catapults or trebuchet. Just ladders, which as seen on screen were not THAT difficult to defeat. I feel like Saruman was putting all his strategy on breaking the wall with gunpowder and not putting much thought to all the other ways the defense can and would be mounted. I suppose he was relying on brute force to win the day. I would think a person of Saruman's wisdom and long life would be at least a little more cautious, a little more deliberate. Yes sometimes the large anvil dropped on your opponent wins the day, BUT you have to HIT your opponent proper in order for THAT sequence of events to play out.

(Elves near extinction) They couldn’t help as much as some may have wished at the final battle of we Helms Deep: By the Third Age of Middle-earth, the population of Elves had significantly decreased from their numbers in the earlier Ages. Gandalf (and the rest of the Wizards like Saruman) are one of the "Maiar"... likely the equivalent of Angels in this world. WIzards were sent by the "Valar" - greater god-like beings from Valinior (where they and a lot of the Elves reside_ to aid the people of Middle Earth in their war against Sauron.. but they were cloaked in the forms of old men to lessen their normal powers. They were sent more as guides , not to wage open war, and they only used their power at great need.. (and as you se, they needed a conduit - their staffs- to channel it. (The ultimate "God" in this universe is called Eru Illuvatar - he is the one who resurrected Gandalf and sent him back to Middle Earth "until his task was done".
Sauron and the Balrogs were also Maiar - they were corrupted by the 1 evil lesser god - Morgoth (remember Gandalf sad he fought and killed the Balrog of Morgoth - Morgoth.. the balrogs were his chief lieutenants back in older ages of Middle Earth). And of course, Saruman was corrupted by Sauron (and he also feared him, though in the books he is more written by Tolkien as someone trying to play both sides and wanting the Ring for himself so HE could rule Middle Earth)

Explaining Elrond & Arwen+Aragorn part 2 - But since the giant Númenorean island toppled at the heart of the sea between Middle Earth (Endor) & Valinor by manipulating the people slowly degenerating lifespan, tricking Ar Pharazôn into attacking Valinor and back then that land was place one could physically see & travel towards.
Eru Ílluvatar the AllFather shifted Valinor into an in between limbo space and which caused the world to turn round or semi spherical which caused a giant tidal wave so huge it plunged Númenor to the bottom of the sea but Sauron’s fair (Annatar-Lord Of Gifts) form was pinned to the bottom of the sea by the island of Númenor so now he can no longer take fair angelic form ever again! Now he’s far less beguiling.
But sadly the waves also crashed into entire coastlines of middle earth too.
See. Even gods actions have consequences! It’s why the Valar among other reasons do not take direct action anymore as it’s always caused something catastrophic. It’s also why Gandalf explained what he could do with the one ring.
The Valar essentially took an unspoken vow to not take direct action. When Ainur clash: land masses sink to the bottom of the sea like Beleriand in the the War Of Wrath etc. this was why the sun and moon from the last flower and fruit being set in an area where Morgoth couldn’t go to ruin them.
He followed Tillion and Arien and got majorly burned by Arien as she was evidently stronger than him. And even the Valaraukar that became balrogs were of similar type of Ainur to Arien. Same as when Eru didn’t attack anyone.
Moving Valanor into a limbo zone between Eä and the rings of the world which caused arda to bend and caused tidal waves that didn’t just sunk Númenor. It destroyed entire coastline of middle earth and killed many innocent people. People who think Eru intentionally levelled middle earth don’t know much about the AllFather and free will and how sacred it is!

Faramir had a dream about the Council of Elrond, he was the one appointed by the Secret Fire to be part of the Fellowship but Denethor denied his petition and sent Boromir in his stead, which ended up getting him killed. Faramir would probably resist the Ring better than his brother. (the Secret Fire refers to the will of Eru-Ilúvatar, the creator god of the world. Gandalf tells this to the Balrog, "I am a servant of the Secret Fire")

@@Asari547 yes, it happens in the second book and he is more concerned about Boromir than the Ring. He questions Frodo about a poem that predicts the arrival of a halfling who bears Isildur's Bane but he never tries to send them to his father. The book shows that the lore of the Gondorians acknowledges the danger that Isildur's Bane poses and Faramir takes it seriously. He is very much righteous, intelligent and much more confident than in the movies. After questioning him and seeing that he doesn't lie, he sends them on their way. What I meant in my previous comment was that despite being exposed to the Ring for a longer period of time like Boromir was, he would resist its influence much better.
Edit: Denethor's story is different too, as it is more obvious that the use of the Palantir alienates him a lot. In the books he was much more virtuous until Sauron attacks his mental health through it.

The joke about tossing Gimlli is, in the 1970's some high-end bars had a game of sorts; they would hire people with dwarfism to dress in velcro suits and patrons would compete to pick them up and toss them to stick against a velcro wall for rewards. It was all fun and games until it was decided to be intolerably disrespectful and, to a point, racist.
23:41 this is a very idiotic change Peter Jackson made. Denathor had absolutely NO CLUE the The One Ring was found. The dream that Eowyn tells Aragorn about is actually a dream that Faramir and Boromir had, Boromir went to Elrond to ask about this dream and just happened to be there when Frodo showed up. Gimli was accompanying his father Gloin to warn Elrond that a messenger had appeared at Erebor asking about the ring and trying to recruit the dwarves for Sauron. Legolas and the Elves were there to report that Gollum had been released from their prison.
Faramir also never was tempted by the ring, this change isn't as dumb as it is infuriating because it does a disservice to Faramir.

You keep saying "what a great line", these are, taken from the book. Tolkien had the idea to write a book while at university, he then joined the army and fought in WW1 and a lot of what he witnessed is in the books, he was the only one of 4 who joined up to live. The hobbit was written in the 30's LOTR came out in the 50's with the last one being completed in 57, if I am correct. Tolkien has influenced all fantasy writers since, though some say "no, I came up up with my own idea's", Really!
