Thank you for stopping by! In this video, I'm working on two 5x7" pieces on paper. My work is inspired by my love for fields of flowers. You'll see me create them from start to finish. There's no music, however, you'll hear me talk through a lot of my process and discuss products/tools that I'm using.

Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. Great video
These paintings turned out so beautiful! They remind me of a morning walk in the garden.
Thank you, Debbie!
If I could creat paintings like some of you guys do on UA-cam I would just feel rich. And not rich becuz of what they could be purchased for but becuz they're little treasures. It's having that kind of talent to creat beauty inside yourself that would make me feel rich. It's a better feeling than having money.
Yes! I love what you said! I feel true joy and happiness when I create my art. That's something money can't buy. Thank you, JuliJo!
Anyone can my friend. Art is self expression. Get yourself some books, and study art history. Visit your local art galleries and museums. Then you will see what treasures are in museums. There are millions of good artists out there. The more you learn about art, the less you will jump to conclusions. Value yourself and do not underestimate your hidden abilities. For painting abstract work, just get some paint and canvas to get a feel for the colors you have. Just put them on canvas. Try it! You will love it.
Thanks you guys.
Hi Betty, I want to thank you so much for these video’s! I have taken a couple of your online courses, watched (I think) all of your video’s more than once, and today for the first time I feel like the painting I have been working on came together with more of the elements I’ve been looking for. I did your two part collage series over the last couple of days, and I think that may have been what helped the light bulb go off in my head, where now I’m starting to “get it”. I also just want to tell you that our trajectories are so similar, I moved to Dubai when I was 50, (2007) for my husbands job, and really got into card making and moved on to mixed media, then started on watercolors, (while traveling back and forth from Dubai to North Carolina about every 3 months to look after my parents. I would carry a complete set up to paint and would often paint most of the 13 hour flight! I moved on to acrylic abstract art, and actually got quite good, developing a following in Dubai, and working with several designers doing mostly corporate commissions. In 2020 we moved back to NC, bought a house where I have a wonderful art studio, and then bam, I lost my mojo. Didn’t really paint for 3 years, and now I’m back at it. I was ready to try a different style and came across your art. I love it. I hate that I feel like I am copying you, but my friend who has a Master’s degree in Fine Arts assures me that is how you develop your art, by copying. Sorry this is so long, but it’s your fault, the way you relate to us while doing your video’s makes you feel like a friend!❤. I very much want to take one of your in person workshops, and look forward to the next time you offer one! So as you always say, thank you, thank you, thank you! Rebecca
Yay! Oh joy! Watching this will be my reward at the end of my work day! Ha! Thank you Betty darling!
You are so welcome, Ulrike! Enjoy!
Betty, you posts are so helpful and truly encouraging to put paint to paper.
Thank you very much.
Glad it was helpful! Paper is great! Especially when you're starting out. It lets you loosen up so much more than working on a canvas. Have fun creating, Anne!
You are my favorite abstract artist! I know this because I look at new abstract art pieces daily, but each time I do that, I always find myself going back to your gallery of work to enjoy your art. It just makes me happiest! Very cheerful colors, very cool, amazing layers of colorful work! Thank you, thank you for sharing your art with the world.
Wow, thank you, Nallie! You made my day! You're super sweet and I'm so thankful for your kindness!
Right? Me, too! Happy, joyful, cheery, uplifting, inspiring!
I love all your videos and these smaller ones are great because it's so nice to have a closer view of watching you work ... Thank you for generously sharing ❤️
Thank you so much, Kim! Yes, the smaller pieces allow me to zoom in more.
Your pic is happy, poppy and bright!
Thank you!
Bahahaha. You're sooooo cute, Betty... At 53 minutes, when you figured out it was upside down and you laughed as well, narrating it, I laughed with you. It makes me so happy to just dive into your world for a little while and get re-inspired. 💖
Hahaha...I was totally confused! Sometimes, my pieces look good either way! Thanks, Ulrike!
Hi from Soth Africa, Ive been watching you for a while and seen u come to a point where you have found yourself no one can do what you do u have come too master which is your very own style... the layers the colors, markings, raw magic.... your style is amazing Ì'm a new abstract painter and know i will cme into my own when i am ready when ever that is.... I can always watch you from begin to end and I Know what you are going too do ...but love every minute of your work... thank u for your passion u certainly get me going... and keep going cause you will have people follow you because your work is amazing. .. love Terry 😀😆☺
Thank you so much, Terry! I appreciate you watching from South Africa! Yes, you're right...you will come into your own style when you're ready. And, if will most likely happen after many years of practice. You sound like you're a very patient artist who can see their future. I love that! Keep on creating! Hugs from sunny California!
Thanks for this, you are so generous to share your talents and your secrets!
You are so welcome! I'm happy to share what I have learned over the years to help other artists. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Oh Betty, I cannot wait for this pandemic to be over and to attend an in person session with you. I love your methods, your style, your inspiration, your colors... you inspire me to keep painting despite my tendency to overwork each piece. My paintings end up so “muddy” (not Brown, but rather overworked). I suck the happiness right out of the pieces 😊
I think we're all looking forward to the end of this pandemic and getting back to normal! So that you don't overwork your pieces, consider setting them aside when you feel like you're about 90% done. Come back to it another day with fresh eyes. Thanks so much for watching the video, Andrea!
I enjoy watching your videos over and over because I learn more each time.
Glad to hear that, Carol! Thank you for watching!!
Absolutely gorgeous!!!
Awe...Thank you so much, Brandy, for your super kind message! I agree that it's hard to exactly copy my work and that everyone will bring to their art their own touch based on their own experiences (art and otherwise) and the journey that they have been on. Wishing you many hours of creativity!
I love your videos. So fun to watch you paint. I'm not exactly sure what it is about your work that i love so much, maybe the depth you create with your layers, but whatever it is it is awesome. Thanks for sharing with us all.
Thank you so much for sharing that with me, Vicki! I'm so happy that you connect with my art!
I really loved this. I started with a small canvas- which I never had done before, so it was helpful in that way. I also liked seeing more close up, your marking work at the end. Thanks Betty!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video, Ellen!
Your artwork is so good!!! Amazing painting, Thumbs up! 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your kindness!
Some more beauties!! Love them. Thank you for sharing!!
You are so welcome! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I just love learning from your videos......I watch them over and over. Will I ever be happy with my progress?
Thank you. Looking forward to the next one.
You can do it! Glad you enjoyed the video!
You are very welcome, Joy! Thank you!
Another great video Betty- After watching you paint quite a few pieces, I decided to order a 10 set of those Woody crayons. Can't wait to play with them! Today, from watching you, I realized that I was washing my brush too often and hence, not getting the color harmony I aspired to. I love how you just keep paint on your brush to incorporate all the colors in your palette to create harmony. Having just moved from watercolor to acrylic it's a habit to keep my brushes really clean when switching colors- not anymore!
Hi Jan! Yes, keeping paint on my brush allows me to harmonize as I mix my colors. I love that part about painting! I'm sure you're going to love playing with your Woody crayons. Thanks so much for watching!
Thank you Betty I really enjoyed this video. Thank you for being so open with information and speaking on the emotional part of creating. I really appreciate your talent and your teaching sytle
I'm so happy you enjoyed what I shared...both painting and experiences. Thank you!
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! SOrry I was shouting. I just can’t contain myself! And you are so like-able…. ❤️
You're the best, Amy! THANK YOU! 🥰
This is beautiful 😊👍
Thank you so much 😊
Just beautiful, thanks for the video!
You're very welcome! Thank you for watching!
I love that you’re doing two pieces at once. That would really break up my focus and allow me to be looser.
I haven’t had this much fun painting since I took it up as a retirement hobby. I just love colour and that’s truly all I want to paint.
I love that! Keep on creating what brings you joy!
It's easy to see why you're so successful...you share and it comes from the heart,❤️ which creates abundance in your life. Conversely, some hold their 'knowledge' inside as if to keep it only for themselves ~ this only contradicts the natural laws of the universe and has the opposite effect. I always leave with more knowledge than before I came after watching your posts, so a huge thanks to you!😛🌈‼️
Wow, thank you! And, I totally agree with you. There is more abundance when we share. I'm so happy to hear that you're learning from my videos!
Miss Betty,
Thank you for SHARING your experience with me.
I am happy when painting with simple creative process.
GC
You are so welcome, Gabriel! Thank you for watching!
I didn't realize you can use Gesso for white. I love your process Betty and that you are down to earth and give lots of information. Not to mention, your beautiful paintings ❤
Thanks so much, Nicky! Yes, love using gesso for my white! Thanks so much for watching!
Gosh, Betty, these are so amazing again, wow. I got a third through, and will finish tomorrow. Can hardly wait. Watching you create is a whole art course in itself. Thank you so much! And you're right: it really helps being aware of what makes one's heart sing!
Glad you got through most of it! I hope you enjoy watching it to the end, Ulrike!
I'm a new subscriber because of this video. I love your color sense!
Yay! Thank you, Andrea! I just launched a new mini online course, Mini Magic: Concertina Art Journal. Check it out here: bettyfranksart.thinkific.com/collections
Have a fantastic day!
Thank you for sharing your process with us, Betty! I am still learning to harmonize paint colors that I like. I love your idea of painting on paper---I think that would help me feel more free.
Wonderful! Yes, paper is great for that purpose!
Correcting myself, your pics are happy, poppy and bright!
Thanks again, JuliJo! I totally understood what you meant in your first comment. I appreciate your kindness!
To je Boží 😮
Hvala! 💓

Hello Betty nice to meet you. I am Steven of Kumamoto, Japan. I wanted this help. Thanks, Reflections are healthy. smile These are beautiful.
I'm glad you found the video helpful, Steven!
Hi there. I was listening to you saying "someone asked if I ever get bored" I had to say here that anyone who can ask that just doesn't get it! I love painting too it's my passion and if you love what you do it never feels boring because you are always discovering something.
Exactly how I feel, Joan! Thank you for sharing that with me!
I love this video Betty and the colors used and showing us how to mix colors also.... Thank you
You are so welcome, Cynthia! Thanks for watching!
Just stunning!

LOVE the idea of doing 2 pieces of art….having them both relate…..they can be hung together, or on either side of a mirror, etc. love listening to you while I paint. Thanks, LAURA
Many thanks, Laura! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
Betty, you've just made my Saturday. Thank you.
Wohooo!! Love hearing that, Gill! Thank you!
I always enjoy watching and listening to you, Betty. This time I particularly appreciated your discussion about how we can pay attention to what we love to see and look at, in our everyday lives, and make lists of these, in order to help hone in on what it is we want to paint. I don't have the luxury of decades ahead of me to figure this out, so any and all tips and strategies are always appreciated! Greetings from your birth city, where rain has washed away most of the snow. Strange times indeed!
I'm so happy that you enjoyed the video and my commentary. Short cuts and tips are great when you're getting started. I have learned a lot in my short period of time and was always happy to learn from others. Sorry to hear that the rain already washed away the snow. It's very odd and I'm sure there's still time for more snow to arrive before spring! Like you said, these are strange times!
New sub here! I love how you talk about painting. You give a great peak into an artist’s way of thinking. What inspires you, how colors are exciting, how to come up with titles for your work, all that stuff is so unique to artists. Very relatable : ) Love your channel! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're enjoying my videos and commentary!
Thanks Betty, this really got me thinking about loosening up in my own practice. Much appreciation for you sharing your techniques and insight with us.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you, Susan!
Génial
Thank you!
Betty thank you for letting us see your process-it’s clear you’ve learned so much from your experiences which is a total gift and timesaver for us. I love efficiency in all things and you’ve given me ideas as to how I might go back to oils and acrylics from watercolor-the idea of wasting bothered me so much. Watching you has helped me feel less uptight because your methods seem so unwasteful to me.
Glad it was helpful, Rachel! Creating art, in my opinion, should be a stress-free and fun experience! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
I like all the colors, thank you.
Thank you so much!
Beautiful and inspiring. Thank you
You are so welcome, Lizzie! I'm so happy you liked it!

I have just discoverd you in my journey in how to make a art channel... You keep amazing me w the final outcome from your layering. Ive painted all my life, and often its hard for me to find a abstract artist who kerps my attention and can teach me more and you succeed at it.. I guess our learning is like layering too.. So you have layerd my mind ..sole and spirit w colored learning.. Ive become a true fan..💟 Thanks so much Deedie
Thank you so much, Deedie! I'm so happy you're enjoying my videos and my process. I totally agree with you...learning is a layering process! Keep on layering!

I had not intended to work oday, tidied studio and sorted out WIP, watched about 20 minutes of this and grabbed a pile of small pieces and had a painta long, all the way to the end. Thanks for the inspiration! I ended up touching over 50 little pieces, mostly 6'" x 8". A couple seem closer to complete, too :)
Hahaha....love when that happens! Thanks for painting along with me!
Such great information! Thanks for sharing your gift.

Thank you so much, Gidge!
Hi Betty! Love your work. Know of Joan Mitchell from college. I've Been working in oil pastel and oil paint. Very interested in Nova acrylics. Always surprised when people say they have never heard of great painters like Joan Mitchell. Stuck on east coast where"realism" seems to be prized.
In their defense, there are so many artists/painters I haven't heard about either. 😁 I think you have to be into abstract at to know Joan's work. Although, I probably couldn't name a single realism painter! 😜 Thanks so much for watching and commenting, Phil! Have a great weekend!
Beautifeul!
Thank you!
Thank you for a beautiful tutorial...
You’re welcome, Joan! Glad you enjoyed it!
Love these two especially!
