Thank you for stopping by! In this video, I'm creating on 12x12x2" wood panel.
My work is inspired by my love for fields of flowers. You'll see me create it from start to finish. There's no music, however, you'll hear me talk through a lot of my process and discuss products/tools that I'm using.

Hello and welcome! I'm Betty Franks and I create my vision of abstract fields of flowers using acrylic paints and pencils (and other mark-making tools). I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and travel a couple of times a year to Preko, Croatia (where my parents live). I started painting in 2012 and focused on abstract art in the summer of 2015. “Every mark informs the next….” That is fantastic information. It does explain what is happening when a painting isn’t working!
Right?! And it explains what is happening when a painting is working! Not just every mark, but every color we put down informs the next. It's a fun dance!
It’s very true that painting is like solving a puzzle. Until I started painting I didn’t know that the ugly phase is part of the process. I also like to paint intuitively and I find that it’s like you’re being led through a maze. And you take some wrong turns but if you keep you will find the way!
@@claudiabauman3486 Yes! Love how you describe it!
Also I love that moment in the process when you tame the “chaos” or it is calmed down and I can see the structure/path forward that you are taking in the painting. 🔥
Yes! There is a lot of chaos in the beginning and then I work on quieting areas. The chaos is all part of the underpainting that we see peeking through. Thanks for watching, Claudia!
Your channel was recommended by Alison Darwant. I have been a Folk Art painter for almost 30 years and recently started playing with watercolor, pastels and markers. I just started watching a few of your videos - and I must admit rather naively - that I don't quite understand abstract art. I am trying it - but I don't understand it. Perhaps as I continue it will make sense. Your art is beautiful - the colours and textures and marks. Thank you for sharing your knowledge
Welcome, Anne! So glad you're here! I was like you...I didn't get (nor did I like) abstract art. But then I realized that I didn't like any of the abstract art I was seeing. It wasn't until I came across abstract art that drew me in that I realized I was really liking it!
What I have learned is that abstract art is not just what you see. It's what you feel when you see it. And, as an artist, I'm not just creating art for you to see, but for you to feel. I often get comments of how happy and joyous my art makes them feel. That's what I'm going for.
However, as an abstract artist, you will need to find your voice. Meaning, what are you trying to express? It can be as simple as, in my example, a love for flowers. Or it can be very complex that has a deep meaning. Honestly, I'm not that deep! I just love how flowers make me feel and I create art that expresses those feelings.
I hope this helps a little. Please continue to explore and learn from as many as you can. You'll find that you connect to some art (and artists) more than others. Then explore why that is. It will help you get closer to how you can share your vision (in an abstract way).
Thanks for being here!! Keep on creating!!
Check out Jodi Ohl, another wonderful abstract painter. I agree with Betty. Abstract art is something that you FEEL. The more exposure you have to it the more you will get it.
We all know that you are a gifted artist, Betty. You have become an amazing teacher too. ❤
You're super kind, Margo! Thank you!!
One of your best tutorials because you explained your process step by step! Thanks so much. LOVE ❤❤this one.
Yay! Glad you enjoyed it, Sherri!
Thanks for being such a down to earth, kind instructor. So many artists are such snobs. Ewe. I love your shows.
You are so welcome! Thank you for watching (and for that nice feedback!)!
Good for you for setting your own style with your life - we paint to process our own life.
Yes! Once we discover that we're doing that, then our style emerges. Thank you for watching!

I’m going to re-watch this video after work. I have that same Cheap Joe’s panel with deep sides, so I’ll start painting it.
Wonderful! I think you're going to love working on them. I just looked them up to buy more and most are sold out. I'll have to look elsewhere.
Beautiful! The sides are are wonderful too. I was sorry to see all the black getting covered up, but glad you brought back some of it at the end.
Haha...sometimes I get carried away and cover up too much of the black. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Great Betty. I like it
Thanks so much, Piera! I appreciate you watching!
ugh. I love all of those things too.
Oh, that sounds so wonderful! Thanks for sharing, Alissa!

Thank you so much, Angela! It's fun watching them come together!
😍Soooo beautiful!! I really love this one! All my favorite colors in the finished piece. Really lovely Betty! 😄
Thanks so much, Phae! So happy you like it!
When I watch these I just get inspired to mix colors. I may have to take the Santa Fe course next year. Just to learn to let go and have a good time.
It would be great to have you there, Brian!
I have learnt more from you than anyone else on line. I use your process and put figures and realistic things on top so thanx. I have done cave paintings using this layering effect so thanx
Awe...thanks, Mary! Makes me super happy to hear that!!
Really enjoyed this. Just such a pleasure watching you work. Love your longer videos.
Thanks so much, Emmanuel! I'll have more long videos soon. My hard drive was full (of videos!) and I had to order a new one. I'm having it installed tomorrow. Yay!
🌸🌿🌻🌹🍀🌼🌾 love the colors; I especially enjoy watching your smaller art tutorials!! 💖
Thank you so much, Janaica! I love creating these minis!
I think 'opacities' is the word you were looking for!
Yes! I think you're right! Sometimes I just can't think of the right word when I'm in the middle of doing a voiceover on my videos. Thank you!
Great work. Always enjoy watching and listening.
Thank you so much!
I love your art Betty, makes me feel happy.
I love hearing that! Thanks, Helen!
Love your work! I like the thought of (me) painting a small canvas- less intimidating!

I love your work! That is your style! ❤
Thanks!
I love your style and hope you don't change too much from these beautiful attractive colors.
Thank you so much, Barbara! I love creating in this style!
Hi Betty. Another spectacular video - thank you. I loved all the little crumbs of pink/red that you added at the end. The colours were gorgeous. I slowed the video down by half and listened to your chit chat while you were painting. I find reading the subtitles distracts me from watching your wonderful process. Didn't mind listening to you even though you sounded like you'd had one too many cocktails!!! LOL, Go you, your work is gorgeous.
Haha....glad you enjoyed the sloooooowed down version of me! Thanks so much for watching, Deb!
Thanks! You always amaze me!!

Oh wow!! THANK YOU so much, Fran! I really appreciate this. You're super kind!! 🥰
I am really enjoying immersing myself back in how you paint your pictures it’s really inspiring me to get back to my abstract forest that I love so much. I’m so glad I got over my anti-woke irritations, because after all, if we all think the same way, life would be boring, so thanks Betty for being an inspiration to me!
Happy to have you here, Paulanne! Glad to hear that you're getting back to painting abstract forests. So cool!
I love your pictures. Very very good. 👍Anna
Thank you very much, Anna!

Beautiful painting Betty,
I luv your artwork 👍🙂🌻
Thank you so much, Minh! You're very sweet!
First time that I watched, I loved it and looking forward to seeing more!
Thank you, Polly! Glad to have you here. I have many more videos for you to watch!
I too have always loved flowers! I hope to some day acquire one of your original panels. So inspiring!!
That would be lovely, Donna! Thank you so much!
Lol at first when it was just the red and that yellow I was thinking gosh that’s ugly then you started with all the other colors and it turned beautiful!! I’m a realistic type painter and I’m fascinated with the lose painting.
Haha...Yes, the early stages are supposed to be ugly! Otherwise, I'll get attached to it and not finish the painting the way I want it finished (with many layers). Thanks so much for watching, Chris!
Really beautiful I just appreciate your work that has given me so confidence in my work I enjoy painting and you give me lots of inspiration keep up the great work🥰👍
Many thanks, Lisa! I'm glad you're enjoying my videos!
Hi Betty! Love this with your palette knife😁 Betty's Bundle is great- I'm loving Nova Color Paints. I love the feel of them- total game changer for me 🎨💕
I love hearing that you're enjoying your Nova Color paints! They are the best!
I just bought Betty’s Bundle. Big risk. I’m an artist but don’t know where these colors will take me. Thank you for the fascinating inspiration!
Thanks for buying the bundle! I hope you love the paint and colors as much as I do!
Merci!
You're the best, Thalie! THANK YOU for supporting my art and videos!
I wish you could see my yard garden - all flowers, lush greens, endless stone-ringed beds, gravel paths and old fencing for days, you'd love it. Everyone passing by stops to stare, people get out of their cars to take photos - even in winter it is gorgeous, an oasis in my dry, dry city! Started in 2004, never spent a penny, picked, hauled, and placed every stone myself, and it is STILL a work in progress!
Oh, I love that! I bet it's gorgeous and I would definitely be one of those people stopping to take pictues!
We all want to see it.
This is one of my more favorite art pieces of yours.. i tend to like the smaller works.. go figure.. I'm happy to hear things are going well for you with new representation and workshops etc... You Go Girl! Hugs! deb
Thank you very much, Deb! All is going well! And, I'm happy that you like this piece. The small ones are super fun to create!
Beautiful, each of your works is so unique. And it has such wonderful balance too. Love hearing you speak about what you are doing! Thanks for the demo through FAA, it was great. p.s. if you haven't seen the 1940 film 'Grapes of Wrath' it's a real gem, one of my all time favs, a true work of art in and of itself. I think you'd enjoy it. p.p.s, going to get Betty's Bundle soon via your link!
Hi Kathy! Thank you for participating in the online demo! And, thanks for the info about the movie. I'll check that out. The audio book has been fascinating...especially when I was just in Santa Fe and Albuquerque and I was on Route 66 (which they talk about in the book). It was such a different life back then. Can't imagine how those folks all lived through it. Thank you again!!
@@BettyFranksArt The 1940 film stars Henry Fonda and as many times as I re-watch it I always find some nuance I missed before. It would be great to watch once you finish the book. It's a real form of art.
i just love your style and how you break it down so i can follow along ty !!!! where can i buy prints of your art ????
Last night I ordered the Nova Betty's Bundle. I usually use Golden acrylics but am very curious to try these!
Thanks so much for ordering! I think you're going to love the paints. Let me know what you think!
Sure hope I managed to get on the email list. I'm interested in the workshop in Santa Fe for next year at the Artist Get a Way.
Hi Betsy! My Santa Fe workshop was announced on January 1. Unfortunately, it has sold out. There's a wait list. You can learn more here: www.santafeartistgetaway.com/service-page/fields-of-flowers-abstract-painting-1?referral=service_list_widget
I'll be announcing a new workshop for San Jose, California very soon. It'll take place at the end of May.
If you're not sure if you're on my email list (you should have received a welcome email). Do a search for hello@bettyfranksart.com. If you don't see one, please message me at that same email address and I'll check for you. Thanks!
Beautiful! Love your art, Betty. Can you please share how you finish your piece. Do you varnish, spray or paint?

Thank you so much for watching, Ivan!
Love your style and all the great tips you give us! Question: Any tips on keeping the marks "loose" and not so structured or defined. I love the raggedy edges your marks have. Mine always seem to be not so abstract. Maybe I need to retrain my muscle memory to not be so literal when making shapes. That is tough!! Maybe I need a lighter touch?
I understand! I see that happen often in my workshops by students who are just learning. I like to keep a light touch and also a dry brush (very little paint). That allows me to soften the edges. It took me years of practice. Keep at it!
I would love information about your online courses since I am in New York State. Thank you. Love your work
Hi Brenda, here you go: www.bettyfranksart.com/online-workshops/standard_products/paint-with-betty-live-june-27-2020
Thanks so much for asking!
@@BettyFranksArt Thank you. I see that there are no online classes coming up, do you have any plans to have another live class?
@@brendafink5212 Not at this time, but if you are on my mailing list, you'll receive notification when I do one. Thanks for asking!
Love your work…and advice… one of my problems is composition…any suggestions?
That's a tough one. I learned composition through doing mostly. I also observed other artwork and looked at what made it interesting. Pinterest is a great place to do that.
Thank you so much, you are so inspiring, any chance you come to Canada for a workshop?
Hi Lorraine! I wish I could! I would love to. Unfortunately, I can't do it this year due to family obligations. Thank you for asking!
I absolutely love seeing your paintings. To watch you work from the beginning to the end. Is the free 3 day still up on process etc that you mention in the video. June 6? I did order some nice paint. Plan to order more. Thanks .

Fantastic! Love those riggers!!
Hi Betty! Thank you for this video. Your art is gorgeous. I noticed the Nova Color paints are not very lightfast. Do you spray your finished art with something to keep it from fading? Thanks.
Hi Gracie! Glad you liked the video! What makes you think they are not lightfast? Nova Color was originally mainly used by muralists (and still is). It withstands all kinds of outdoor conditions. However, with that being said, I prefer to protect all my artwork, mainly because I use pencils and crayons on my final layer (and on other layers). Here's a video on how I protect my artwork: ua-cam.com/video/bVACgRad2Qk/v-deo.html Thanks so much for being here!
Hi Betty. Thanks for answering my question. I assumed they aren't lightfast because they had a lightfast number of 1. Thanks for the link to the video. @@BettyFranksArt
@gracievandiver3728 Thanks for sharing that, Gracie! Use this link and scroll to the very bottom where it says "Lightfastness Info". You'll see that 1 is Excellent. novacolorpaint.com/collections
Love this painting video! What type, brand and size is the red handled brush you are using at around 11:43?
Oh! Good question! That's an inexpensive brush I bought at Michael's a while back. It's a flat brush. Thanks for watching, Lynn!
Good morning, Betty. Hmm, I wonder if Nova Colours are available in 🇨🇦
I think you're asking if they're available in Canada, correct? You can't purchase them in Canada because Nova Color Paints doesn't use distributors for their products. Everything is sold directly by them (that's why the cost is lower). However, they ship to Canada. Just be aware that the cost of shipping will be high and you may be paying duty fees, too.
Hi, I’m wondering if you varnish your work and if you do what do you use? I love this painting. Thank you for sharing.
Hi Michelle! Here's how I varnish my art on paper. I use this same process for canvas/wood. ua-cam.com/video/KBg4GjajaPg/v-deo.html

It takes practice, Patricia. Don't be afraid. Jump in there and start adding marks in various sizes. You can do it!
Hi Betty, Where and when will you start giving in person class?
