MTB Stems: Top 5 Picks for 2019
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лип 2024
- In this installment, Jeff covers our Top 5 MTB Stems. We’ve got the right pricepoint for you whether it be the entry-level Truvativ Hussefelt or the Lamborghini of stems, the Renthal Apex. The mid range offerings are no slouches either like the RaceFace Chester and RaceFace Turbine R but don’t forget the feature-packed OneUp Components stem. We go through our favorite stems from the moderately priced to the high end no holds barred models. It seems like there wouldn’t be much separating these stems but that isn’t the case. Whether it’s the material, bolts, clamp style, or just plan looks there are many distinguishing features to consider. Of course all the mountain bike stems in the lineup will clamp equally as well to your handlebar or steer tube but each brand brings its own style to this bike component. Sit back, grab a cold one, and enjoy!

What stem are you currently running on your bike? Let us know!
Renthal Apex on my enduro bike, Syntace Flatforce on my trail bike and FSA ??? on my rigid.
Bontrager 35 👍
What's the difference between the Maxxis Aggressor and the Minion SS?
Deity Copperhead?
Deity copperhead 50mm
Good stuff gents! Love that you reference GMBN and other channels in your video. Shows that you guys are here to provide help to us riders and not just trying to build a UA-cam channel.
Could you guys do these top 5/10’s for every component? I’d definitely love to see your guys’ opinion
As well as assembly of a compete bike using all respective ranked parts together. All #1 picks as a bike and #2 picks as a bike etc. Then test them against each other. Ultimate video.
A35 on the full squish bike and a renthal on the hardtail. Love the anodized A35 setup.
A big learning experience with regards to bike components that left an impression on me was way back in the day when the whole CNC machined components thing took off in the early 1990s.
It was an advertisement by Shimano in defense of their top of the line XTR rear derailleur vs the numerous boutique CNC machined pieces coming out.
They made the point that they too CNC'd their derailleurs BUT went a step further by forging them into their final shape because forging creates a much stronger piece with more consistent grain structure and less opportunity for stress risers.
Just look at Thomson components. They machine their parts and from very high quality alloys. They WILL eventually crack.
You no longer will ever see purely machined cranks for the same reason.
Those CNC stems may look beautiful but you could probably get a far cheaper 3D forged stem thats as strong and weighs less and costs less.
Lol, I am guilty of this myself owning the Renthal but had a cheap $20 Uno that was lighter and forged and probably just as reliable.
Love you guys linking GMBN. It would be awesome to see both channels work together on some stuff.
Strong
Light
Cheap
(Pick two). Those are always the factors you consider when choosing any bike product
Comfort
Cheap and light doesn’t sound like a very good combo

I watch this channel purely for the well placed hilarious movie clips! love it....
Pretty cool idea to tighten the headset with the oneup stem!
Running the RaceFace Turbine R with their Turbine R bars and love them
Loving my 50mm Apex renthal , amazing the changes 5mm longer makes and w degree more up
Incredible as always 🤘🤘 🤘
Aaaagh, I bought a stem yesterday - the day before you released this video. At least I got one that you recommended. The Turbine R.
ive been happy with the machining on my funnduro, good price, weight, and it matches my candy red hubs and pedals
Burgtec MK2 Enduro! Very popular in the the UK, as are the bars & Pedals.
Santa Cruz syndicate seam to get on well with them to! 👍🏻🇬🇧
Great Video Worldwide Cyclery... AWESOME Review.
What about the super short length Pacenti PDent 20mm Stem? What do u think? Would you recommend them.
Thought a copperhead would’ve made the list, running a DMR defy stem cuz I cut my steerer too short 😂
Running the new Stout from 9point8. It is beautifully machined, and has a proper zero gap face plate setup. Also, lighter than the Renthal.
The kazoo was on the table and he didn't play it. What's going on over there?!?
😂😂😂
Haha seriously! We are here for the Kazoo shredding bro!
I play the Kazoo with my ukelele. Its magical and annoying at the same time 😂
he the kazoo lid
Underrated instrument, can be played orally or rectally. Just dont switch back n forward with a good clean
I've been wanting to try a new stem, and this video convinced me. Thanks homies!
Just installed a PNW Range Gen 3 stem (30mm), replacing the stock Bontrager 50mm stem on my PowerFly 4. With my height/inseam, by the time I get the seat/pedal distance fitted, I'm so far up that the reach of the stock stem puts excessive weight on my hands. So shortening the stem, replacing the almost flat stock handlebar with the 40mm rise PNW ranger in an effort to get the seating position/weight balance back to where it should be.
Haven't ridden the setup yet, but the static 'sit' in the garage seems less hands heavy/better balanced. I'm considering a Rail 7 but the dealer hasn't had an XL for me to test yet. The large was a bit cramped and could not get a comfortable pedal / seat arrangement without a lot of lift in the seat tube starting position.
No one seems to really work out the seating geometry / weight distribution issues that come up for riders over 6'3" and inseam in the 36"+ range. If all you do is adjust the seat height to match pedal stroke, the result is a very forward / hands heavy position which gets uncomfortable fairly quickly on hands and neck. Getting a good fit for larger riders is a topic that isn't covered well, if it all, so definitely some territory to be explored if you have an interest.
I'm just using what came on my bike, 2020 Canyon Torque.
I run a Tenet Nora 45m stem and like it a lot. Cool company, you should sell their products.
Running a Straitline Amp on one bike, the 9point8 Stout on another and the Race Face Turbine on a third. Mostly because their either made in Canada or Canadian company.
Well I WAS jones'n for the Copperhead. Love Deity and thought it'd go good w/my Blacklabel bars. BUT.. I really would prefer around a 5mil rise or close. I checked out those Renthal Apex and am very impressed. Saw those Apex in 50 & 60 mil reach w/a 6 deg rise and so far you're selling me on those. Nothing said here about the copperhead or ANVL stems? There are so many though, maybe another vid on the OTHER top 5 or 10 that weren't mentioned.. stay tuned..?

Running the Husselfelt and love the chunkyness it has. Not bothered about spend 2/3 tomesthe price to save 50grams just have a poo before a ride and save more than 50 grams for free.
Glyn Parry it’s not the same thing weight off the bike is way more valuable then weight off the body
@@bobdixon3048 50 dollar valuable?
@@bobdixon3048 how is that more valuable than actually getting more fit and stronger? Unless you are actually doing competitions grams should not matter. How about people get stronger instead of being weight pussies. id rather have a stronger forged component than a shitty cnc machine aluminum part for saving 50 grams. If that little amount of weight bothers you then you should not be on a bike period. stop being little girls.

I runn spank spike 50 and i love itt
Same spank spike 50mm
I have a 35mm Answere stem 780mm Spank Spoon bars with a 40mm rize and Fabric Magic Grip 50⚡01 love this set up on my 2019 Giant Trance and 2015 Stance except it's a 50mm stem and the bars only have a 20mm rize and my 2018 Nukeproof Scout has the same exact set up as my Trance they are all 27.5"
I bought a $9 stem that weighs 126g so I’ll let you know if the bolts shear off anytime soon or what... fingers crossed.
Best Enduro stem .... Renthal stem & Spank stem & Chromag stem !!
Info at 7:00 was really helpful! Thanks
Running a race face Chester 50mm long, 35 mm diameter .
On a side note: I made some stealth through axels (front and rear ) out of titanium for my bike on my lathe. I drilled holes through them so they are hollow and rotor broached 8mm hex drives on the ends for tightening. Also made a oneup style light weight 8mm hex Allen key tool that fits inside my crank so I can remove the wheels without digging in my camelbak. Can send pics if u want to check it all out or patent my design 😊🤙 let me know yo.
on all stems , once the stem is locked tight , you can remove the top cap and star nut
Wish you included Burgtec
I got the renthal 😏😎
Current bike Spank Split 31.8 x 48mm
Great video. As if you could read my brain. I am currently thinking about buying a new stem.
I have a question though. From where to where is stem lengh measured? Just simply from the very front to the back?
never mind, just found it, its measured from the middle of the steer tube to the middle of the handlebar.
Just bought renthal apex 35mm 50mm lenght
No deity copperhead?
All I want is a stem that doesn't require me to re-tighten the head set bearings before every ride.
Currently have renthal stem. They cut so much metal away theses days that there is no grip on the steerer tube.
Have ordered a couple of Hussefelt stems as they seem to have more material.
WWC and GMBN should do a collab video.
is that a 40mm truvativ stem? i was looking to get a hussefelt one, but i feel like the 40mm is a bit too short so do you have the 60mm and if so is it much longer or?
Do you happen to know why the Renthal stem colour doesn't match their bar colour? It' kinda weird tbh...
What is your opinion on the quality of Zipp Service Course stems? I purchased one and it is remarkable for the price point point, and it has a sick look!
I have a negative stem sir and long handle bar...and I'm kinda suffering from stiffness of my arms while biking..my bike is a foxter trivor model 27.5 with a medium frame... My height is 5'7 ..any good advise from you sir what kind of stem and handlebar suits me comfortably??? Thank you
One up is the best one, I'm ordering it next week, question, so you put in that plastic insert if you don't run the tool?
Did you get this? Did you have to do anything special since not running the tool?
We need a video avmbout the updated truvativ 7k atmos stem, i like the renthal but it doesn't go with my paint job. I ended up buying Truvativ 7k Atmos 70mm stem +/- 6 degrees. I had a 50mm 0 degree on my Luna X2 in Medium(i'm 5'11 & 3/4 @ 165lbs. I first tried the stem at 60mm with +6degree. But i needed tbis to come out and up nearly one inch. The 70mm is right damn nesr close to perfect for me. It is very hard for me to find any bike that fits my body. I shattered my back and lost 3 inches in my torso, it is a miracle i can walk none the less ride a downhill EMTB again. I had to sell my Custom Kawasaki z1000, & when i learned to walk again. I needed that adrenaline dump, for fun. So i bought the Luna X2 V2 Ludicrous, i ahould of bought the HPCRevolution AT with the Rohloff to better match my need for speed. But for downhill it was over powered. The whole point of buying electric mountain bike, was to help rebuild my health after losing nearly 3 in hes in my torso, it was hard to find any cockpit to fit my 31inch inseam & my 33.5inch arm reach(dress shirt sleeve measurment) my back had been so destroyed. All but 1/3rd of my L2 vertabrae was gone and i blew 3 disks, costing me 3 inches in height. But my legs & arms stayed the same. So finding a cockpit to fit me is impossible. Luckily i bought from LUNA CYCLES. Bought the medium X2, pull the KS dropper seat post that was 100mm or 125mm ETen model w/remote lever & internal routing. I like how the dropper lever locks into KS proving thwir higher end models are better and smoother then PNW. PnW works excellent, but that travel adjust for perfect fit allows the seat to have rotational play, about 1-2mm to right and left. Slight rotation while the KS post had no movment. Still the 170mm dropper post and Truvativ Atmos 7k 70mm gave me nearly the perfect setup. I plan to buy a 0 degree 70mm from raceface if i can. I love the renthal, but hate the gold finish. I know Spank brand stems offer nearly the same style with different accent colors but i could only find 50mm and less plus bur if 50mm is nice for u and u want renthal look without fugly gold. Chekc out spank stems. I plan to upgrade to a nicer 70mm stem because i do everything from road riding, to gravel, to trail, to enduro, to down hill. I also bought truvativ so eventually i can start a youtube channel.
Hope this helps yo alll. OR ANYONE WHO has broken back and shrunk there torso and needa help fitting their cockpit hit me up on twitter @CryptoDelphi
In the end i put 70mm Truvativ 7k Atmos +6 degree for the time being. was just to small, & at minimum insert would cause damage to the carbon frame. So i put in a PNW Rainier3 170mm raised it up 1inch, from collar for post. Trail HPC Revolution is perfect. Its a eletric dirtbike that puts real dirtbikes to shame.
Chromag BZA on my San Quentin. Not sure what I will do on my Hawk Hill 3. I am debating going 31.8 and looking at PNW bars and stem
I say do it! I run theRange Bar/Stem combo and the stem is great with the gopro mount that I use for a light mount in the dark seasons.
I wanted Renthal, but went for RF chester....because I am broke lol
Had a Atlas 35 35mm, but was to short. Just switched to a Chester 35 40mm. The length is perfect. But the look is blah. Next stem will be the Apex 35 40mm when I can fit it in my budget.
I was going to go for a truvativ hussefelt until i cane across funnmtb and there great selection in stems went for the crossfire 156 grams for 50mm 130grams for 35mm $50 either one bang for buck imho
So is it possible to use any of this stem in any mtb? First time doing upgrades on my mtb
What is steerer diametar for RACE FACE chaster stem. I need it for my bike and fork clamp needs to be 28.9 mm. Is this stem ok for that fork.
And now we have new beauty 's - Funn Equalizer and Spank Split
It would be good to hear from people running into problems with stack heights on the shorter stems being forced to add spacers to clear chubby carbon frames
What’s the difference of 31.8 or 40mm stam length
The ANVL swage, is the objectively most beautiful stem in the world
super nice, innit? i run one at 32mm length, it is sick! got it for $70 to boot!
When it comes to stems and handlebars, Syntace only.
I'm running the Canyon G5 stem and bar and I don't like the stem because of how it goes together. You have to take the whole top of the stem off to remove the bars. It looks super strong but i would rather just take the front ring off rather than whole top half.
Wheres the enve m7
The original 90mm stem from my Epic (2018 Alloy version) is 109g, funny how a basic OEM XC stem is lighter than most aftermarket trail stems despite being twice as long. Wonder how much difference in strength or stiffness? Now running a 60mm stem with 760mm bar on the Epic instead, more fun that way.
With 4 bolts being the new industry standard. They are much more safe than the old 2 bolt face plate style stems. I like bolt's.....I like bolt's......from different area codes....area codes....I got bolt's....I got bolt's!
this comment is just.. Ludacris
I9 A35 is the best stem👍🏻👍🏻🏁🏁
Im running a raceface next 45mm carbon fiber stem
Industry 9 stem 35 40 can be turned upside down and what is the stack height in inches please tia sr uhagd
No love for the Copperhead, huh?
are there still stems for a 31.8mm fork steerer tube?
Where's the 120mm "XC stem"? =P
God the difference it made to change to trail bike with 40mm stem.
How about Weapon Ambush Stem?
4:00 would be nice to have bike locking devices that hide like that too.
i just have one question my dad says that stems are for body position and now everybody says take the shortest stem that you can get I still ride weird short reach 26-inch bikes can someone explain?
shorter, raised stems are better for descending as you have more weight on the back of the bike but longer, lower stems have more weight on the front wheel allowing you to climb better.
GMBN has a good video explaining it
Thanks mate!
3.06 what bars are these please anyone. Thanks
Waiting for Brand-J to hit the market. CRC has Brand-X...
What about the Deity Stem? 😁
Honestly threaded stem caps make way more sense than using a star nut and a bolt, not sure why that isn't the norm lol
What is the weight limit
RENTHAL APEX 80MM WITH THE KNEW CARBON 35 RISER RENTHAL BAR BLACK GOLD AND GOT A 50MM STEM TO FOR NEXT BUILD ! SORRY FOR UPPER CASE BUTTON FALLEN OFF !
Dumb n' Dumber scene though!! Holy shit! Hahahaha lmfao 😂 😂😂 😂😂 😂😂 😂
Where's the I9 stem?
The lightest out there i believe
@@hillsidewoods Not even.
Which one is it?
@@hillsidewoods I have a Stout from 9point8 that comes in around 100 grams. The Mondraker stem it replaced was also about 100 grams. Both are lighter than the I9.
To expensive so not high selling
Enve m7 35 best stem hands down.. mine has a lifetime warranty how bout yours?
is that a weed pipe on the desk next to the coffee ?! awesome!
Almost sold for cheap my 60mm hussefelt the other day. Lol.
i am using a $5 35mm stem from aliexpress.
i just bought an i9 stem, bad boy but very expensive
Here in ph. You can buy a stem for less than 10 bucks.
Dmr stem for that low stack
where is the DENTIST enve stem???!!!
Stem length matters.
That’s what she’s said
Soo Expensive
Apex
No revgrip stem
He looks like if Christian Bale and Topher Grace had a baby
Burgtec all the way
Salsa 60mm
The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.
Enve 35mm. 85grams. An excellent choice for millionaires.
😅
Basically get the cheapest good quality one you can find, and spend money on other important parts like the wheels
I dont understand how companies are just making their stems out of non forged aluminum especially for dh applications. people forged is always stronger. This is why performance and race cars use forged engine internals over cast because cast cannot withstand the forces.
What? WAVE Best Bicycle mtb stem didn't make the list? Lol.
Here's an update...i just paid $122 usd... On sale... For my renthal apex
