  • @terracethornhill
    @terracethornhill 8 років тому +57

    The short answer: a jake brake pops the exhaust valve open at the top of the compression stroke to release the compression that would otherwise push the piston back down like a spring.

    • @davidfrank6666
      @davidfrank6666 7 років тому +7

      hey, mr thornhill, yor answer is still a little too short! after u release the compression, the exhaust valve closes, as the piston goes downward, all the valves are now closed, so now u have created a cylinder where no air can get in, this causes high vacuum, this causes the engine to be very hard to rotate. the vacuum is the only reason for this slow down! u know, just like a car engine when the throttle is closed, and the engine is spinning at a high rpm.

    • @andy16666
      @andy16666 6 років тому +4

      Nope. The compression itself also slows the engine down.

    Just to add to Josh's excellent video, I would like to mention one additional malfunctioning scenario along with its repair. Occasionally, a computer controlled 340 Jake and other Jake models will remain on after the engine has decelerated to idle speed or remains on when accelerating. The problem lies with a broken control valve spring (there are two) per Jake. Just remove the valve cover(s) and the control valve cover(s) to replace the spring(s).
    Good luck locating just a new spring, though, as I have had to purchase the entire Jake Brake rebuild kit just to secure a new spring - so all the Jakes receive new parts minus the solenoids. If one desires to only replace the defective spring, the #1 and #2 dash Jake switches can be employed to narrow your troubleshooting efforts to locate the offending Jake.

    Thank you going over the topic of Jake brakes. Maybe you've governed it before. HD Diesel over-the-road engines use high boost pressure in the range of 42 psi. to make much of their horsepower How does the Jake brake system produce such high braking hp nearly as high as when hot exhaust gases are generating high boost pressure for maximum engine power? With no combustion going on there is much less exhaust pressure to spin the turbo.

      +Joel Lagpacan I can do a video on one, but I don't have any video footage about them so it would be mostly pictures and me talking. In an English class, the subject would be "Engine Brakes" followed by subsection (a) Compression Brakes, and that followed by subsection (b) Exhaust Brakes. Clessie Cummins Sr. invented the "Jake Brake", an invention which was first declined by Cummins Engine Co., but then picked up by the Jacobs Manufacturing Co.

    Good point made at 2:00 (Jakes are compression brakes, not exhaust brakes), but you keep using the term 'engine brakes' too, and a Jake brake is NOT an engine brake, as only gasoline engines can be 'engine-braked' (throttle release causing an air reduction at the manifold, which then causes a high manifold vacuum - this is not what happens in a diesel engine). Jake-brakes (Jacobs Vehicle Systems, by brand-name) are true compression brakes (I'm not sure if they still even make an 'exhaust-brake'). I like how Jacobs (the company, itself) loudly down-talks 'excessive volume trucks', and states clearly that there is 'no reason a properly functioning truck with a Jacobs system on it should exceed 85-decibels noise at 50-feet. They for years asked people to call police and report 'loud trucks', because the noise issue caused drivers not to be able to legally use them, often in places where safety and traffic would actually benefit from their use.

    • @AdeptApe
      @AdeptApe  8 років тому +1

      +Skeeter Saurus I've never heard that about Jacobs and excessive volume trucks, that's an interesting story. The lack of a muffler is really the reason for the loud Jake's and not the brakes themselves, as I'm sure you know. I used the term engine brake throughout the video because that is what people call them and when a sign says no engine braking, it means compression brakes, even though Diesels produce very little vacuum in a no throttle input condition. Thanks for commenting.

    I'm having an issue with an mbn that on settings 1 and 2 works fine but on 3 it's like it stays on setting 2 and doesn't get stronger like it should. Now I had a guy check them and he literally did nothing but take the valve covers off and checked the overhead and solenoids to see if they were working.. he said everything looked fine and normal.. put the covers back on, I go down the road and crazy enough they worked fantastic, for about a week and went back to the way it was .. I had decided to just deal with it.. but then I had diesel in my coolant or we thought, so they checked to see if I had injector cups leaking and to do that you gotta remove the Jake housings. Turned out to be oil and not diesel and it was the oil cooler... long story short they put it all back together and I drove it and wouldn't you know the Jake's worked fantastic again on all 3 settings, until a week later I lost 3rd again... with all that being said I'm thinking it must be a bad wire in the harness somewhere where they had inadvertently got it working for a while by maybe moving the harness and then it eventually wiggles itself loose and it loses signal again.. would that be logical or would it be something else? Any thoughts? Or what I could check

    is this different because it's a diesel? in any regular car you're pretty much always engine braking if your foot is off the gas in gear and obviously it's more effective in lower gears.

    • @davidlovy1271
      @davidlovy1271 8 років тому +4

      Diesel engines have very little drag when your foot is off of the accelerator.
      A gas engine has a fixed fuel to air ratio, and the power is controlled by changing both the air and fuel at the same time to maintain the ratio. The air is controlled by the throttle plate and produces a lot of drag when it is closed due to the high vacuum created during the intake stroke.
      In the original diesel design, there is no throttle plate to reduce the intake air. Diesel power is controlled by how much fuel you inject in, the air component is always the same and will only change when the engine and/or turbo speed changes. The fuel to air ratio in a diesel varies widely.
      A gas engine with your foot full on the accelerator and the key off has the same drag as a diesel with your foot off the the accelerator. If you have ever driven a gas car when the timing belt snaps, it also has very similar feeling to not having any engine braking. Without valve timing, there is no productive vacuum pumping happening.

    Thanks for the vid man was helpful . I thought that the Jake break restricted the amount the valve opened to create higher compression more resistance on the engine. I would of thought if it completely opened the valve it would have no compression so I thought it would allow the engine to spin easier . Any way can’t argue with a diesel mechanic about Jake breaks . Cheers

    Great video Josh. Just curious, but what would be the effect of a loose or tight lash setting? For instance, an early 6NZ with a lash setting of .033", plus or minus .003". If the lash were set at .028", or .037"? What mechanical effect would these settings have on the engine, and engine braking performance? And, would any engine damage result?
    Thanks in advance.

    Trying to see if I can get some help with a jake issue. 2006 Peterbilt 379 with 475 acert cat. Engine was rebuilt about 2 months ago by cat. Engine brakes don’t work properly. Seems as if they are on low to medium even though the the switch is on high. I can move the switch from medium to high and it seems as if there’s hardly any difference at all. The mechanic at my shop checked the overhead and said it was out very little. These things are driving me crazy because they aren’t working properly. Also, in the mornings below freezing the truck skips and sputters when I start driving it for about 2 miles with lots of smoke out of the exhaust and raw fuel smell. Fuel filters have been replaced, but they are not cat filters. Also it doesn’t have the power that it should have. No engine codes at all. The mechanic at my shop doesn’t want to take it back to Cat because without an engine code he says they won’t touch it. I’m pretty mechanically inclined and been driving these for years. I know this engine isn’t operating properly. I want to try to fix it myself if i can. Can you help me with any advice at all? Thanks!

      @@SANFERNANDOVALLEY818 First off Cat made two types of 3176's. 2YG and 7LG was type one. 9CK was type two called 3176B. Engine brake should not activate if engine speed is above 1000 RPM's or clutch switch is depressed or switch is off. Running on starting fluid only, you have to figure out do you have a mechanical failure or electrical failure. Do you have Cat ET or any tool that you can connect with the ECM?

      Motorcycles are probably the least respected motorists on the road, so they get a free hall pass on things to make them more noticeable to people in cars. There are also only a tiny fraction of people who drive them, how many motorcycles do you see on the road daily compared to trucks? You really only see them in numbers if there's a bike rally in town.
      Trucks on the other hand are everywhere and frequent. I don't necessarily have a problem with jake brakes - so long as they have a muffler to quiet them down. But I live over a mile from the freeway and when a straight pipe truck activates their jake brake, it's so loud that you can hear it even from indoors. The ban probably came from these guys who have unmuffled exhausts and are loud anyway, but are ear piercingly loud with the engine brake active.

    • @myredfast
      @myredfast 6 років тому +2

      Trucks aren’t banned either. Jake brakes are only banned in certain areas. Also it’s the pipes on the bike that are loud and yes when they are over a certain decibel they ARE illegal. Enforcement is not a priority due to fact that only a very few people are such chronic complainers that would complain about bike pipes, also law enforcement knows loud pipes save lives

    when I push down on the jake solienod should oil spew out on top of the housing? I believe out of the solienod not sure but it was spewing oil

    • @cwj9202
      @cwj9202 7 років тому

      The oil will exhaust from the control valve via a port located on the side of the jake brake but not from the solenoid. What you are doing is a convenient check of the jake system when the valve covers are removed; so, if that jake functions when performing that move, it demonstrates that the mechanical portion of the jake is performing as designed but does not cover the electrical control aspect.
