Had a friend come to me to diagnose his dt466 powered international box truck. 4 shops and several thousand later his issue was resolved with replacing clamps on charge air cooler. Took me half an hour all I took as payment was a 12 pack off Coors. I think I made a future customer once in done with school!
When i got my little big truck the turbo wasnt spinning right. Was only doing anything at the very end of the rpm range. I didnt know there was a problem because i didnt have experience with the motor. Just figured thats how it was because it has no wastegate. I figured out it was coked up or whatever and wasnt allowing the compressor to spin freely untill i changed the oil, filters, etc and started driving it hard and then all a sudden the turbo spools ALOT quicker and builds longer. Amazing what basic maintanance can do. The truck sat for years. I use Delo 400 SDK oil, nothing fancy.
Thanks so much for such an informative video. Although I was told the noise was an exhaust manifold leak, after putting in new gaskets and putting the bedroom back together (it’s a motorhome) I can still hear a noise. If the hose that goes to the turbo to the waste gate comes off will it then lose boost or will the boost go up very high like on the fast & furious like when Dom pulled the hose off with a piece of wire???????
Hello friend, I have a 2018 Ram 2500 with the code P0299 turbo under boost, I already changed filters, checked the variable geometry turbo and it slides well. I replaced my boost sensor but the pressure is 0.08 to 0.12 psi but it should read 2.5 psi. Would it be a matter of checking the intercooler?
Hi mate! Also less fuel supply (due to blocked fuel filter, worn pump, ...) can cause lower boost pressure. Wright? I found out that this is hard to understand for some people. Keep up the good work!👍 Them turbo's get accused way too mutch/early. ☺ Grtz!
+KennyC405 I can't remember if I mentioned it in this video, but yes, low fuel pressure can affect boost because you would have misfiring injectors. This would cause an engine miss and incorrect fuel timing, which would lower the boost.
Thanks for the video! Just to help my understand of turbocharged diesels, what would happen if there was an older 1999/2000 Cat 3126 (no electronics) running properly under load (constant) and something stopped the outside airflow through the CAC, such as a large piece of debris like a garbage bag, etc. and the driver continued to operate the vehicle. The air coming to the intake manifold would get pretty hot. Would the engine lose a noticeable amount of power and overheat? Would there likely be heat damage to the head/valve assembly or pistons/rings? Thanks again. We really appreciate you.

Good morning. I have a freightliner box truck with a CAT engine. It blew the CAC tube off of the turbo. Assuming it wasn't a loose or rusted clamp, what could cause this to happen? I had some ac work done at a shop. I'm wondering if they removed the tube to better access the ac lines passing under the tube and didn't tighten the clamp. Hopefully it's that simple.
+Antoin Zachery Have your tried pinching the wastegate and driving it to see if that fixes it? Any other engine problems like low fuel pressure or smoke? You can check the exhaust for back pressure that can cause low boost as well.
No low fuel pressure and no smoke. I like to check the intake manifold for leaks. I spent so much money trying to get my turbo fixed. I taken it to different shops but keep getting different answers. I just want on direct answer why my turbo is producing such low boost. You have a shop near Cincinnati, Ohio?
+Adept Ape I meant I want a direct answer from a shop who is looking at my turbo. In a way I feel the shops I was taking the truck to were guessing the problem.
Greetings Adept Ape. I hope you and yours are safe and well. I'm sure you get a lot of questions so I'll keep this short. Rest assured many dozens of hours have been spent trying to diagnose what can only be referred to as inconsistent timing on my 1985 (january build) so early 7FB series 3406b. I know it sounds crazy but bare with me. Have you ever heard of losing the thrust washer behind the idler or bull gear in the front timing gears? BTW the ATA was checked and the weld to account for slippage is intact and well done. It's been over a year and already cost me an inframe. Thank you for your time. Thanks for this video. Yesterday when driving into Colorado Springs, I started have a a delayed acceleration each time at a traffic light, then it gets going. What would be your first thought for that? It seems fine after. On highway, boost pressure is always 20's to 30's. I never looked around town. Driving to campsite in town, it would go down to very low numbers. I assume this is normal?
Adept Ape, I have a C15, twin turbo setup that has a plugged DPF, the driver says he's not getting any boost, so I'm guessing it's because the DPF is plugged. Anyway, when he shuts the truck off, you can hear one of the turbos still spinning for about 1-2 minutes, why would a turbo keep spinning? Do I need to replace it?
Hi , you say that if you pinch the wastegate actuator hose and then run the truck and then your boost returns, then that means your actuator is bad...but i thought the actuator being actuated opens the waste gate port to decrease boost pressure by bypassing the turbine. Im trying to diagnose a 3126b that turns on and idles flawlessly, but after it warms up a little it then goes into an unbalanced idle state. Boost pressure only reaches 8psi at wide open throttle while driving , and 7psi at wide open throttle on neutral.
Josh: I am a CAT Specialist Me: And a darn good CAT Specialist at that. Wish I had a Josh at my CAT dealership….I’ll take 3 Josh’s’ please thank you 👊🏾
I have a cat 15 and have boost issues. Sometimes it works perfect but once I hit a hill boost cuts out and usually won’t return. First thing in morning it works good, once truck has been running for awhile it’ll stop working again
i hate to back track on a older video, but i think its a decent question to ask. In the Hot side of CAC, or Cold side piping, some of the tube connections have blue boots with ribs and rings around them, obviously cause the expand under psi, why on some of the connections of pipes do they use like a smooth orange boot? can i replace those soft feeling orange boots with the blue ribbed and ringed boots? To me those orange boots seem to be soft and sometimes feel like they have a little crunch sound to them like they are breaking down. Maybe causing a low psi leak, but not enough to be noticeable. Id like to replace with all the heavy duty looking boots.
+kwmiked Yeah, some trucks use the orange and some use blue. You can use whichever one you prefer really. I know some seem thicker, but as long as they are high pressure and temperature rated high enough, they should work
If the boost pressure sensor and temperature sensors not working correctly that's also reason for a sluggish pick up.I'm faced that problem in ashok leyland bs3 edc engine.
I drilled a tiny hole 1/32 1/16 hole in the EcoBoost f150 so the air intake wouldn't clog w blowby. It was going into limp mode with no power but now the small hole allows for gunk to escape. No more complete power loss but I have the p0299 code. I also have a catch can on the hot air line that also catch gunk but allows some air to escape. I'm thinking the air escaping is why I'm getting the p0299 code....
Holy Mike, I have a Kenworth highway truck with a Cat and a Kenworth dump truck with a Detroit. I don't cry around that I have a big engine or a big truck. Oh, I also have 4 pickup trucks and I don't call them little.
Can you "T" into the wastewater hose to install a boost gauge. My '03 freight liner chassis Motorhome with a 3126 didn't come with one. I've seen a Bluetooth device that plugs into a OBD2 socket that then uses an Android app (one is called "Torque") to display different gauges and info on a smart phone or tablet. Any thoughts on adding a boost gauge. Our rv is currently at a Caterpillar dealer a 100 miles away getting fixed for low boost. Wouldn't go over 40-45mph. Diagnosis so far, bad boost sensor and restricted muffler/catalytic combo. Thanks for posting and sharing your knowledge.
I have a c13 issue when cold. Engine stumbles, lots of smoke, and a fluttering sound. I can back off the throttle a little and it goes away. No issue when it seems coolant and oil up to temp. Injectors were replaced, running 75 psi fuel pressure at idle between 80-90 driving down road. Could wastegate cause this?
I have a question on a 3306. I rebuilt this 3306, had oil coming out of exhaust side of turbo and out of cylinder 2 exhaust port. Pulled the head back off, replaced piston, rings and liner on that cylinder. STILL have EXCESSIVE oil coming out of exhaust housing of the turbo. Could that be bad oil seals in turbo? It’s almost instantly after starting engine the oil coming out of exhaust housing
What would cause no communication to turbo on a 2019 Mack granite? I’ve looked at both fuse boxes and check wires and currently at a loss on what’s causing the issues.
I have a cat 3126 with a single turbo. The turbo screams at seemingly odd times. Going down hill it keeps screaming for a while. Should the turbo make noise like that?
I got a 3406b 7fb prefix motor. It only builds 10 psi of boost. The truck had another 7fb engine in it that broke some piston rings. That old motor had 28 psi of boost but it was turned up. The new motor only has 10 psi of boost. When I bought the motor I was told it wasn't turned up any. How much boost should that engine build set at factory? Its air cooled.
Hi, I have a Perkins Parma m3 interested in more power and better knots per hour. What turbo do you recommend , i am mostly interested in efficacy. Running as lean as possible. Also running kerosene type 1 fuel instead of diesel type 2 fuel oil can or can’t Fuchs up injectors. Might have to add 2 cycle oil to lub injectors because they are not self lubricating. This is also a propane issue?????????
Thanks for you explanation in all videos sir , sorry for me errors,I come front cuba , I am writing to you with the help of a translator, I have a cat 5ek 435 horsepower, it spends a lot on me, it does not give me 5 miles per gallon, loaded for the west 3.65 miles per gallon, I am now putting some 59 injectors on it, since I have 56 and 58 for what I know
Hey man thanks for this nice video i have problem with my bmw n54 my car running well at the begining after like 5 minit i have check engine light it’s flushing on my dash and stop my twin turbo when the light came on the car it’s on leap mood and show code 3100 boost presure leak and i have wastegate sound
I got a 14 l Detroit. How to test to see if the actuator is stuck. I’m getting moaning sound when let off the accelator like it’s building too much pressure. Should I be able to move the rod up and down by hand or when does it move on it’s own at idle?
I want to turbo my Vw sand rail. What is a low cost small turbo that will run independent of the engine ie no computer or vacuum hoses? Thanks great video.
Why?? They say yes but don't explain. If the leak is after the turbine it won't because your getting full exhaust spinning the turbine. If the leak is before or at the turbine itself where it connects to the hub or center section, then yes, because your not getting full pressure to spin the turbine. Can you explain a little bit more on which clamp?
how can I schedule an appointment with you guys? where are you located. I think my twin turbo C15 needs a checkup. yes, boost is starting to drop, no, haven't gone anyplace to get it checked yet...lol. but I believe the turbo has about a million miles of use put through it.
I would suggest that you make an appointment with an authorized CAT repair facility, as the young man may not want his place of employment revealed due to possible CAT Bravo Sierra policies. Good of you to want him and his repair facility to benefit from his videos. Your engine may require some new injectors in order to elevate exhaust flow to the turbos to increase the boost pressure. Merry Christmas.
Need help. My son has a 2015 Ford Escape Titanium 2.0 turbo. Last week while driving he said it all the sudden lost power and will only do about 30 MPH now. I took it to a friend's and they replaced to purge valve and that did nothing. I would greatly appreciate any feedback as to maybe a couple of things we can check for before he ends up taking it to Ford where they will rip him off again on another fix. Thanks
Great Video, Have a question Have a G3306TA boost pressure after the wast gate is 4 psig it goes through the carburetor at 4 goes into after cooler at 4 but comes out of new after cooler at 1 psig. Is this Normal drop.
I have a 3406B in a 93 Kenworth T800 dump truck and when I’m loaded and going up a grade it won’t boost past 15psi I’ve replaced all the intercooler boots and the AFC diafram on the backside of the injection pump. Any ideas?
Good evening ape I recently replaced the harness on my c15 acert due to some shorts and almost broken wires. This is on a 07 w9. The cam sensor connection looks like it has a 4" extension connecting the harness to the sensor. The plug is stuck in the sensor and the 4" harness is almost in two. I am going to buy a new sensor in case I break it getting it unplugged. Are there any surprises when removing and reinstalling the sensor.
If I remember correctly, there is an oring that seals that sensor, if you remove the sensor it is a good idea to change the oring. Nothing comes to mind special about removing it.
i have a c32 engine on 1000kva genset. while the engine run on idle condition there's no black smoke but on 50 percent load the engine exhaust black smoke continuously. Also the boost pressure doesn't change. Will there be any chance of leakage in CAC or something else
Adept Ape!!! Please help me out with a low boost problem. The engine is a year 2000 model C12. I have two important question, when disconnecting the power boost sensor and checking volt and ground coming from the ECM, i am getting ground, 4.9 volts and the signal wire is reading 6.2 V. Is this correct? Now when I connect the plug and turn on the truck I am getting signal back at 1.4 and it doesnt change even though I accelerate all the way down, truck parked. Only getting 1 psi boost max 4 psi with the peddle at 100 percent!
I need help. I have a 2004 c12 mBL11904 low boost . I have 5 lbs under a pull it set a boost sensor code originally. Put on a sensor on part#1611705.cleared the codes replaced CAC asst which had a 3 inch crack replaced air and fuel filters. It runs 90 psi fuel pressure under a pull and 65 psi at low idle. I checked turbo and wastegate movement no diaphragm holes or stuck valve fins look good on both ends. Ran it with exhaust disconnected from turbo no difference. Only thing I found is primer pump doesn’t work. Have not replaced it yet. Sprayed down intake and tubes and no leaks. Any suggestions?
Man you help me so bad to diagnost my bad wastegate. My turbo was creating 5psi of boost instead of 25psi and i did youre trick pinching the wastegate hose and try to see if it creates boost and it did create boost so my turbo is ok. Took the visgrip off the vacuum hose that leads to wastegate and did a pull and only made 5psi of boost so wastegate is not holding pressure
Hi. I have a 07 FR century with a C15 475 cat with twin turbos. I am having a problem with power where by loaded or empty climbing or on a flat road i sometimes have lots of power strong engine sound and then all zero power even going down a hill it has nothing & after sometime it will go up a hill at 75 mph you can actually feel it cut in and out of boost. So my question is does the turbo boost sensor or the wastegate actuator have anything to do woth this or is there something else? Plus its killing my fuel mileage.
+Mark Mwema The wastegate is mechanical so my guess is you have something else going on with your engine like losing fuel pressure or as you said, possibly the boost pressure sensor is not working. Any check engine lights?
+Mark Mwema Hmmmmm, should hear the boost spooling up. You can try pinching that wastegate line I show in the video, but my guess is you have something else going on. Put a fuel pressure gauge on as well and see what it's at when it's losing power.
I've got a Mercedes om502la that's acting alright at low throttle but once I'm on the highway trying to get some power, she falls on her face around 15mph The unit is a crane, quite old, so my rpms aren't currently working. I thought I'd pick your mind on this. See what you thought after watching your video
Hi buddy, great vids, i have a focus 2010 1.6 tdci 109hp and i have the p0299 code coming up. I changed the solenoid boost control valve and the egr valve as i had a stick open egr code as well. Not solved. It’s strange as if I accelerate to the floor in 2 nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th from under 2000 rpm the turbo will do full boost, about 1.1 bar and hold constantly until i shift into next gear at 3-4000 rpm, i have a boost gauge; if i try accelerating from 2000 rpm or higher the boost goes to 0.5 0.6 and if i keep my foot in it will go into limp mode. No sensor codes or other codes come up, i hear no sounds of air escaping anywhere. Any idea what can cause this? Mechanics are baffled also. Thanks for the help
I noticed in the draw diagram you have shows 0-30 psi. I had no idea cat turbos and engines had great power to lower psi. My first truck has an Cummins isx 13 and the boost would go to 50 psi every time i climbed hills. It had a vgt turbo.
you have help me out before on this same exact engine I'm having a problem with right now it is sitting in the middle of BFE Kansas we had a problem with it going down the interstate with the crew set it died blew 2 - 5 amp ECM fuses replace the fuses check the pins on the truck side we have three positives and two grounds all positives showing 12 volts grounds are showing good continuity very minimal voltage drop when spinning over will not do self diagnostics on the Cruise button tries to start with ether but does not quite start
+robbiecoyle22 Okay check pin 70 on the connector it should be the bottom rear pin, that should have 12 volts when the key is on and cranking. If you have all the voltages check out, you may have a bad ECM. Is it showing rpm on the tach while cranking?
the ignition wire is showing 9.68 volts while cranking ECM has been tested by Foley cat in Colby Kansas they said it communicates but we do not have a way of getting the truck to them at the moment so we took just the ECM to them we put the ECM on another truck with a 6nz and the truck fired up and ran just fine I just checked and there is no engine RPM the truck does have a brand new crank positioning sensor but does not have a new cam positioning sensor
+robbiecoyle22 It should read rpm on either position sensor, so if it is not showing rpm it sounds like the ECM is losing communication Now the ECM worked on another truck so you may have a problem with OEM wiring, did you measure the pin 70 voltage at the ECM while cranking or did you measure it at the key switch? It should be measured at the ECM to make sure your not losing voltage before the ECM. You may have to put a breakout harness on the ECM to isolate it from the truck wiring and see if it'll start then.
just to let you know we did find the problem one of the pins on the truck side of the ECM when you would plug it in the pin would push back and not make good contact with the connector on the ECM
Mercedes C200 CGI. I have miss fire at cylinder no2 while driving even at low speed. Noticed that my turbo BOV open and does not close. Already replace BOV, pressure sensor, waste gate control vacuum, temp. sensor yet to replace and reads 50 deg Celcius when idling. When pressure sensor connector removed BOV closed and no more miss fire even at 120KM/h speed. Any advise. Can we drive the car with BOV continously closed

Can you please tell me where is the turbocharged boost sensor located?
Hello, I would like to know what is the turbo actuator spects are as far as bsi boost . (At what pressure the gate should starts to open up ? Thanks
Excellent explanation! Thanks 😊

Me: And a darn good CAT Specialist at that.
Wish I had a Josh at my CAT dealership….I’ll take 3 Josh’s’ please thank you 👊🏾
My boost problem was bad electronic boost actuator had me seeking for days 2010 sprinter
What was your issue man I’m having 9and 10th gear with no boost at maxing out those two gears
Great channel! Very informative! Need more channels like this
I have a cat 15 and have boost issues. Sometimes it works perfect but once I hit a hill boost cuts out and usually won’t return. First thing in morning it works good, once truck has been running for awhile it’ll stop working again
Hi 👋
How much boost pressure that cat 🐈 c18 produce , can I know from the low pressure boost that there is problem on the turbocharger
i hate to back track on a older video, but i think its a decent question to ask.
I know some seem thicker, but as long as they are high pressure and temperature rated high enough, they should work
Boots?
If the boost pressure sensor and temperature sensors not working correctly that's also reason for a sluggish pick up.I'm faced that problem in ashok leyland bs3 edc engine.
The APE stands for AUTOMOTIVE. PROFESSIONAL ENGINEER?? ..GREAT VIDEOS
I'm thinking the air escaping is why I'm getting the p0299 code....
cool story. go share it with the little pickup truck youtube page people. This channel is for big cat diesel engines in big commercial trucks
thanks mike. i did.
Thanks for posting and sharing your knowledge.
richard leitner Yes you can add a T to your wastegate and install a gage. I did this to my 300SD Mercedes. I've had no problems with it.
Thanks for showing telling, you’re helping me a lot thanks and well see ya next time see ya bye.
Cool ℹ learn a lot today
What would cause no communication to turbo on a 2019 Mack granite? I’ve looked at both fuse boxes and check wires and currently at a loss on what’s causing the issues.
Excellent video bro.

I have acert C15. Twin turbo What your opinion on. Doing a single. Turbo. Conversion. Do. It or don’t ?
Awesome !!
Hey my man, what is the normal boost pressure in a c15 acert twin turbo.
Thanks
Thanks for you explanation in all videos sir , sorry for me errors,I come front cuba , I am writing to you with the help of a translator, I have a cat 5ek 435 horsepower, it spends a lot on me, it does not give me 5 miles per gallon, loaded for the west 3.65 miles per gallon, I am now putting some 59 injectors on it, since I have 56 and 58 for what I know
Hi. I have a renault master 2.3. 2016 and when I start the engine or rev the engine the turbo pipe shrinks. What could be the causes?
Question, why would a turbo, at high speeds, with the pedal steady, kick on and off repeatedly.in.a deisel truck with the egr system deleted?
If I have a leak at the clamp that connects the exhaust turbine and housing would it cause low boost
Yes
Low boost is on the compressor side. Leek some where.
how can I schedule an appointment with you guys? where are you located.
Merry Christmas.
on a generator set do they use a smaller turbo for the steady 1800 rpm? i’m trying to figure out how they achieve 30-35 lbs at less load/rpm
Thanks
Do you think you could do a video on the timing systems of cat engines? As well maybe some videos or discussions on the brake systems? Thanks!
By timing systems, do you mean the timing sensors or how to time the fuel pump or camshaft?
Adept Ape, The camshafts. I'm very interested in getting into this field as my future career, and am trying to learn as much as possible.
+Simon Leighty The next time I time an engine I can try to make a video about it.
Any ideas?
Can I adjust the wastegate on a 3406e for more boost. Only getting about 17 psi at 1400 rpm and the power just dies off even going over an overpass
We got a machine with a CAT C9 acert and in summer time always overheat. Can you tell me what's wrong with it?
@Adept Ape
No none at all. Also i rarely can hear the hissing sound of the turbo and if i do its faint. Is that common with cats?
+Mark Mwema Hmmmmm, should hear the boost spooling up. You can try pinching that wastegate line I show in the video, but my guess is you have something else going on. Put a fuel pressure gauge on as well and see what it's at when it's losing power.
Mines doing the same did you figure it out
How much boost should I be getting with a 1998 3126B? I'm only getting around 18 psi at most. Normally it's only at like 10~15psi.
Thanks lots .
I've got a Mercedes om502la that's acting alright at low throttle but once I'm on the highway trying to get some power, she falls on her face around 15mph
The unit is a crane, quite old, so my rpms aren't currently working. I thought I'd pick your mind on this. See what you thought after watching your video
BGinner Gamer Check your boost, if low, check charger for spin and play. You can get a rebuild kit from mercedessource.com
+robbiecoyle22 It should read rpm on either position sensor, so if it is not showing rpm it sounds like the ECM is losing communication
Now the ECM worked on another truck so you may have a problem with OEM wiring, did you measure the pin 70 voltage at the ECM while cranking or did you measure it at the key switch? It should be measured at the ECM to make sure your not losing voltage before the ECM. You may have to put a breakout harness on the ECM to isolate it from the truck wiring and see if it'll start then.
the 9.68 volts was at the ECM while cranking
just to let you know we did find the problem one of the pins on the truck side of the ECM when you would plug it in the pin would push back and not make good contact with the connector on the ECM
Mercedes C200 CGI. I have miss fire at cylinder no2 while driving even at low speed.
Noticed that my turbo BOV open and does not close.
Already replace BOV, pressure sensor, waste gate control vacuum,
temp. sensor yet to replace and reads 50 deg Celcius when idling.
When pressure sensor connector removed BOV closed and no more miss fire even at 120KM/h speed. Any advise. Can we drive the car with BOV continously closed
Am asking how much pressure booster for cat c15
Binge Watching even though I drive freightliner love the info
I drive a Freightliner, it has a 3406e CAT. Cat engines were put in all brands of trucks.
