This scene is not at all unlike a real-life incident I've been told about that happened to my grandma when she first began going with my grandpa. My grandma grew up on a farm in northern Michigan but had gone to Detroit for nursing school, and she met my grandpa about a year after graduating, when she was working at one of the major Detroit hospitals. Anyway, it was Thanksgiving and my grandma, being the country girl she was, wanted turkey, but because money was scarce for her, she couldn't afford to buy and make her own meal. She and my grandpa scoured the city for restaurants in the hopes that one was open and would have a turkey dinner. The only one he found open was a Chinese restaurant, and the only turkey they had on hand was a carcass. My grandma gladly ate it and knew right away that this was the man she loved. They married four months later and stayed married for 30 years before my grandfather passed away.
@@dustintaylor1927 He passed away before I was born, but I've heard many stories from family (and sometimes friends of the family) about how amazing he was. This story just happens to be one of them. He was also 20 years older than my grandma (no kidding), so everybody knew he would probably die first and the marriage might not last as long as some (especially given the time period--they married in March 1960, before the divorce rate really started to shoot up). People asked my grandma how she could marry a man who was so much older than her, and as she put it, "I love this man and I'm going to marry him, whether we're married for ten minutes, ten days or ten years." Their marriage is one of the happiest I've ever heard of and they were blessed with five children, the second of whom is my mother. My grandma, meanwhile, is still living (as of this comment) and just had her first great-grandchild day before yesterday (not my kid, but my cousin's). @MasterRare03 For myself, I usually like to watch this movie before Christmas happens sometime in December because I'm in more of a Christmas spirit and it gets me more excited that Christmas will be coming soon.
This joke seems to be perpetuated by this movie, but it's not Chinese but languages like Japanese that have trouble distinguishing and pronouncing an English "l" or "r." My wife's a native Japanese speaker learning English, and she literally will mix up l and r in a lot of words. Mandarin Chinese actually has both of these sounds while Japanese has a sound ら り る れ ろ (ra ri ru re ro) that are actually a different phoneme completely. It's more similar to the way western Americans say the "t" in "water." It's called a "tap" in linguistics because your tongue only lightly taps an area of your mouth when saying it. Since it's sort of in between, to English ears, it sounds like a sound in between L and R.

This is still one of the funniest scenes I’ve ever seen in a movie. I agree with everyone that it would never be done today because we’re so damn p.c., but the thing if it is, if you ever talk to someone who’s learned English coming over from a specific native tongue, they’ll tell you that Rs and Ls are one of the trickiest things to learn. So, p.c. or not, there’s certainly some truth to it, which is part of why it’s so damn funny. Hey, at least they were trying, right?
