Just read that Susan Chew, the actress that carries out the roast duck from the kitchen just passed away in Vancouver at the age of 94. Here is a bit from her interesting bio I found online in one Canadian newspaper: During her lifetime, Chew was more than a restaurateur (opened up a Waffle House restaurant back in 1955): she was a Cub Scout leader, world traveler, model, singer, professional hula dancer, painter, fashion boutique owner, travel agent, social columnist, Toastmaster, Realtor, disc jockey, creator of giant paper flowers, blogger, Mahjong enthusiast, movie extra and more. She was also responsible for introducing the mini-skirt to the city of Toronto in the 1960s, according to her sister, and was commissioned by the federal government to create 367 giant crepe paper flowers for the Canadian pavilion at Expo ’70 in Osaka Japan. Back in the mid-1950's, Chew herself became the subject of a national news story when she and a roommate were refused a suite at a new apartment building because she was Chinese.

Despite the racial connotations, the actual inability to pronounce certain letters is actually rather prominent in varying different Asian nationalities. My father who was born and raised in Malaysia, though raised to speak Cantonese (Chinese parents), has the worst time pronouncing things with a TH sound, instead saying just a T sound, because certain pronunciations are just non existent in certain languages, hence why the muscle memory of a person's speech can sometimes make what we perceive today as just a "racist stereotype"
the problem is, any light research would've revealed that 'l' is no problem for sinitic speakers to pronounce. 歷史 來日方長 林俊傑 and for a cantonese example 屌你老母 all feature prominent 'l' sounds even so, as a chinese person, i don't findit offensive, i just find the clip really cringy, so much so it's actually funny
This scene is funny as hell, but it's still stereotypical because they basically rolled in all East Asians' inability to pronounce certain sounds when in fact just one group of them really does it. Chinese never have a problem with distinguishing "l" from "r", unlike what is shown here: That is definitely a Japanese thing.
@@Wasserkaktus Yes and No, It depends on the word Once again, my father, whenever he tries to say my Aunties name, which is Lauren, he always fumbles it, and says Raurie It sort of chokes in his mouth and its a sort of tongue twister for him

And if you wanna be technical, the director even asked the actors if they would be offended by the joke about their accents but they thought it was hilarious. It's not that deep, no feelings were hurt. It's all just humor.
I just found out Melinda Dillon didn't know what the bird was going to look like. Everyone else did. Her reaction is genuine. It only makes it that much more funny to me.

I am truly amazed at how funny this movie was and in the world of political correctness the fact it is still on TV. When my father in law was in the nursing home before he passed away, this was his favorite film and we brought the DVD up so that he and the other residents could watch it. Now these were people in their 70's and 80's, who had lived through WWII, Korea, Vietnam and the Great Depression. When we dropped the movie off some sniveling little whine ass woman came out and told us that this movie might not be appropriate for the residents because of the violence in it. I started laughing and told her to go back in her office and leave the people alone and asked her if she could imagine the hardships those residents had undergone in their lives and that they earned the right to watch whatever they damned well wanted to. It was never brought up again and they watched it to their hearts content.
I am truly amazed at how untrue this story is and that in this world of political correctness we hear more and more fantasies from anti-PC braves about the supposed time they stood up for truth in the powerful faces of the sniveling PC agenda-pushers.
0:57 My favorite part! “Sing something else!” “JINGLE BELL! JINGLE BELL! JINGLE ALL DA WAEEE!!! OH WAT FUN EET EES TO RIDE EEN A ONE-HORSEY OPEN SRREEEEIIIGGHHHH!!!” 😂😂😂
Little known fact lost to time: during wwii in the pacific, US forces used passwords, for passing back in to the front lines, with heavy use of the letter L. A word like, "lilipution" would be used. It was virtually impossible for a rank and file japanese soldier to use that word without giving himself away. They can't pronounce L's.
@@curumipon7089 Yes, it is that they find it difficult to pronounce phonemes such as /r/ But you're also correct, they have another phoneme and allophones that are even similar to some western languages. The rhotic R is something that is very rare in Europe apart from English. The chinese can certainly pronounce /r/ The have difficulties with /l/ because it is similar minus the the point tip into the palate versus dental ridge. I dont like saying they CAN'T pronounce it, just that they find it difficult. With Spanish, where Rs are tapped or trilled, they actually manage to pronounce /l/ as they are "trying to roll their Rs" In the end they just confuse them, and mostly it's because of how their speech has developed growing up, not that they can't differentiate. In short. Totally not a stereotype. It's almost a given for non-fluent english speaker from China.
Just want to note how differently this shot is compared to a modern film. A wide shot with a slow push in. No fast cuts. No obvious nods to “this is a oner!” Maybe because it’s an improvised scene so it has to be one take, but the feel is completely different and slower. Beautiful.

Puts the duck head in his pocket 😂😂😂
I never noticed that he puts the duck head in his pocket and I've been watching this since the 80s. We even taped it and I watched it over and over and never noticed.
@@ronharris7964 why not? the head has its uses to make sauces and stock.

I'm asian and I find this hella funny lol.
same this is fucking hillarious,lmao
I laugh but I sure can't speak any Chinese language...So there ya go
My dad is Japanese and he cracks the fuck up at this scene. He love this movie so much that we even got him a leg lamp for Christmas one year, which he absolutely loved.
sofaturtles same, always been my favorite scene
Cause really it us a funny situation. I am not the least bit racist. I will laugh at my ancestors. German. Dane. Swedish. Irish and Scottish.
Humor like this unfortunately can’t be performed today.
A lot more is allowed today

The old Chinese fella fixed that smiling duck, huh? WHACK lololol
This was a throw back to when Jewish people would go to Chinese restaurants during Christmas because it were the only restaurants open during that time. Since Jewish people don't celebrate Christmas, they would eat at these places since it was the only thing open.
Hope everyone has a Merry Christmas! This scene never fails to crack me up! Lmao 🤣
Farararara rararara!!!!
“Sing something else”
jingre Berrs jingre berrs!!!!!
I just watched the behind the scenes, you can see the owner of the restaurant couldn't help but to laugh at his employees singing.
One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite movies, thanks. I am going to try to convince my mom that this is what we should do for our Christmas dinner because it would be so much more relaxed and festive than slaving away in the kitchen for hours to cook turkey + trimmings for ten people.
This still puts me on the floor laughing!
These guys are just adorable.
"Deck the Harr with bar of Horry, fa ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra! Tis the season to be jarry, fa ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra!" Gets me every time!

Thanks for sharing. :P
Me too I love this movie so much
744 Gerrard st east. Toronto. Now a french restaurant. Just found out I live 3 min walk down the street from it. Passed it soo many times living in the area the last two years not realizing the importance of that landmark. Favorite christmas movie since I was a kid. Never would've thought I'd end up living next to it.
Very cool and thanks for the address. I've been to the house which is in Cleveland, OH. I've also been to Jean Shepherd's childhood house which oddly, is on Cleveland St. in Hammond, IN.
Ok, McGavin’s expressions make this scene. Especially the facepalm during “Jingle Bells”.
Lol those guys singing is the best part of this scene!!!
My cheek muscles are killing me from laughing .... the scene is brilliant.
Bro the way he just puts the duck’s head in his pocket 💀
After watching this movie for the past 39 years, it's just occurred to me that the Chinese restaurant wasn't "Chop Suey Palace Co.", it's "BO LING Chop Suey Palace Co."
Love this film. It's really heartwarming & a taste of what life was like back in those days.
歷史
來日方長
林俊傑
and for a cantonese example
屌你老母
all feature prominent 'l' sounds
even so, as a chinese person, i don't findit offensive, i just find the clip really cringy, so much so it's actually funny

No its pretty racist. But you keep doin you.
It’s not racist if those are Chinese people willfully singing the song like that to willfully make fun of themselves
Ah. 1983. When we could still laugh at things.
How dare you laugh at things now ?!
Crazy it's 2023 and I laughed at this scene. And yes I'm a leftist liberal snowflake no we're not "offended" over a scene from a classic Christmas movie from the 80s. It is not that big of a deal. And if you wanna be technical, the director even asked the actors if they would be offended by the joke about their accents but they thought it was hilarious. It's not that deep, no feelings were hurt. It's all just humor.
@@KevinLuper99 There maybe hope for you still, in land of stupid democrats like Biden
@@KevinLuper99 Well, see, that just means you're more classical liberal than leftist.

I just found out Melinda Dillon didn't know what the bird was going to look like. Everyone else did. Her reaction is genuine. It only makes it that much more funny to me.
Not going to lie. Chinese recipes for duck and goose adapted to turkey are a welcome addition to winter holiday feasts.
We usually eat duck slices with pancakes and sweet sauce known as Hoison topped by scallions then wrapped together.
Yup especially since duck trumps turkey any day of the week. Even with turkey deep friers they still somehow end up dry while duck meat is just soft and juicy no matter what
The best scene from the best Christmas movie ever!
The owner/manager just puts the duck head and neck in his pocket like "saving this for broth". Lol!
so did anyone ever notice the Chinese dude put the duck head in his pocket ?
Which one there all chinese
This is a beautiful snapshot of a time and place.
i love watching this every year with my family
This part never gets old for me

Anyone else see Uncle pocket the duck neck at the end?
😂
My japanese wife (who has a hard time with her "L's" ) always laugh our brains out at this scene. CS is the greatest movie OF ALL TIME!!!! 24hr 100% worthy
the mom laughing was real lol
I love that they gave Melinda, the mom, a fake script so that she would not know in advance that the head would be cut off so they could get a natural reaction - works beautifully
Melinda passed away 1-9-2023. RIP🙏
It was never brought up again and they watched it to their hearts content.
shut the fuck up
And then everyone clapped right?
I am truly amazed at how untrue this story is and that in this world of political correctness we hear more and more fantasies from anti-PC braves about the supposed time they stood up for truth in the powerful faces of the sniveling PC agenda-pushers.
it's "smiling" at me.......picks up cleaver "WHAMP" chops it off and casually puts it in his pocket.....loved this scene!!!!
Couldn't do this in a movie nowadays...
too many snowflakes and white people who are offended for other races

As a 30 year old with a bit of respect for 80’s pop culture, I have nothing to say but sad but true
The chef actors improved it so they probably could as long as that info was well known (like it is for this movie)
Dude every time I see this I get a good chuckre
My favorite scene in the whole movie. Merry Christmas!!!
HaHa me too! my fav part! and the Leg lamp! with the woman being jealous!
I love how the guy who chops the head off the roast duck just casually puts in his pocket.
That's pretty well known. Same with words like Squirrel in Germany. And if it was lost to time, how would you know?
Its not that Japanese cant pronounce it, the Japanese r and l sound is completely different from the american one.
@@curumipon7089 Yes, it is that they find it difficult to pronounce phonemes such as /r/
But you're also correct, they have another phoneme and allophones that are even similar to some western languages.
The rhotic R is something that is very rare in Europe apart from English.
The chinese can certainly pronounce /r/
The have difficulties with /l/ because it is similar minus the the point tip into the palate versus dental ridge.
I dont like saying they CAN'T pronounce it, just that they find it difficult.
With Spanish, where Rs are tapped or trilled, they actually manage to pronounce /l/ as they are "trying to roll their Rs"
In the end they just confuse them, and mostly it's because of how their speech has developed growing up, not that they can't differentiate.
In short. Totally not a stereotype. It's almost a given for non-fluent english speaker from China.
@@The_InfantMalePollockFrancis Well as a native Japanese, I can guarantee that らりるれろ is pronounced differently than “r” and “l” in English.
"Lollapalooza" was supposedly another password/shibboleth that they used...
The singing 🤣🤣🤣🤣, never fails 👍
This is easily one of the funniest scenes in movie history.
Just want to note how differently this shot is compared to a modern film. A wide shot with a slow push in. No fast cuts. No obvious nods to “this is a oner!” Maybe because it’s an improvised scene so it has to be one take, but the feel is completely different and slower. Beautiful.

They made it into a musical in 2017 and changed this scene so the waiters sang the song perfectly, thereby 86ing the humor. It bombed.
