Worked like a charm on my 2020 Legacy Touring. I now have a button for BOTH seat heat and seat cooling. Very nice!!
Thank you for walking Subaru Nation through the installation process for this update. I implemented the Mid update on my 22 Legacy. Took about 40 minutes to complete. LOVE the update! The environmental controls are SOOOO much more driver/user friendly. Hopefully Subaru pushes out an Android Auto fix that utilizes more screen.
Updated my 2022 Leagacy Mid level trim with straightforward ease and no drama. Took about 45 minutes in my case. Thanks for posting the links and well detailed video.
Thank you so much for this. I went to the dealership today and asked them to install the March 2023 update on my Legacy 2020 XT. They updated the version but it wasn't the latest one. Using your instructions I was able to complete it myself. Thank you so much.
Thanks for this, I just updated my OBW and love the improvement!
Getting my 2022 OB done next Tuesday. Can’t wait. Thanks for posting the video. 👍🏻
Thank you for the video. This update works. Worked on my 2020 Legacy Limited.
You are a GOD! Keep these videos coming please. My 22 OBXT loves you.
Going to do this on my 22 obxt too!! Glad to hear :)
Thanks for this. Easy to follow. Worked perfectly on my US version 21 OB Onyx.
Thank you much for great video. It smoothly went through and working nicely!
Thanks for the video! My new routine: Power on, ATV, #1 auto seat arrangement. Love the new button for A/C seats in my Touring!
Thanks for the super thanks!
Thank you sir. Excellent video with no nonsense. The way it ought to be :)
Great, I have already installed it on my Outback 2022 premier, spent 25 mins with USB, thank you.
Just FYI: I have a Mac, and using a 16gb flash drive formatted to MacOS Journaled worked perfectly.
Worked awesome. For the premier model, new update has TWO buttons for heated/vented seats. NICE!
Thanks again for the direction! It worked perfectly and the AutoStop Eliminator was not an issue. I can't believe how much faster the interface is and the controls are much better!
Glad it helped!
Thank you. Update successfully done on 2021 Legacy xt touring.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I got into it at my dealership with the service tech who told me there is no way to update the infotainment in my 21 outback onyx. I literally showed him this video and he shrugged at me. Bought a flashdrive on the way home and did it myself. THANK YOU! hopefully it will be far less glitchy than the prior version!
'21 outback onyx edition with nav, took 28 min
Thats sad, the dealer of all people should know, they get the updates straight from Subaru.
Just updated the display on my 2020 Outback XT. Thanks!
Sweet! this makes it look super easy and damn looks like I'm still running some old ass FW 060-781. Time to update, thanks.
Just used this video to upgrade my 2021 Subaru Outback premium and it works great! Took about 45 min for the update. I used the 2021 Mid file.
Make sure you extract the 4 files and erase the other file folders or else the vehicle won’t be able to detect the update
The heated seats being on the main screen is super useful in the north. I would really like them to give us the full screen Android Auto. I stupidly believed the dealer when they said that would come soon. From now on with Subaru if it's not on the car initially, I will expect it to never come.
Buying an iphone will cost you 10 minutes.
Both Subaru & the fine folks at STARLINK have been absolutely clueless since the email to Subaru owners about the new update with enhanced features came out last August. Lol
@@ekimandersom4478 and the money the company charges you for the I-Phone. These things are not free.
Thanks for the tutorial! For anyone wondering, I've done it on our Canadian 2020 outback without nav, I took the mid file, definitely not the nav one, but I wasn't sure between the low and mid... I haven't seen a 2020 split screen... Not sure who's the target on this.... Anyway! Word of advice, the system seems now a bit slower to answer a d my wife report that android auto now crash 2-3 times in a 500km drive... I'll have to verify that!
Also, at the first reboot, a few error happenend that I haven't seen since, first time I've hit the climate button, everything crashed and eyesight deactivated...
Stoped the car and retried and everything was alright!
Super easy to update. Thanks
Thank you so much!
Installed it tonight. The entire process ended up taking about 30 minutes max. Probably closer to 15. I'm so glad I didn't have to pay Subaru to do it. My 2021 Outback Limited has 47,800 miles on it and the install is only free if you're under 36,000 and your car is 3 years old or younger. They were going to charge me a couple hundred dollars to perform the update.
That’s insane…
Now if I could get that screen on my 22 WRX. It looks awesome on my 21 Outback XT.
Thank you.
Good afternoon! Just bought an outback touring year 2022. I am finding out things i like and i don't. One i don't is the famous start/stop. I tried to do the update bit the version i have on my car is already is 280 but i don't have the icons on the main screen like in your video. Any idea what to do!? Thanks.
Could you please post what your files look like again? Thank you.
I had my 2018 XV (Crosstrek) serviced recently, now it shows a row of diagnostic icons in the upper LCD display when starting.
Thanks for posting. I have a 2021 legacy without Navi. (Mid software version) - it took approximately 50 minutes to update.
Was it an actual legacy or an Outback? I know they share the same platform so it’s easy to get them confused. I tried with my legacy and it didn’t work and I just want to try and confirm that I’m just doing it wrong haha
@@jacobp948 Yes, I have a 2021 Legacy Premium model without navigation. Not sure if this helps but this was my past and current software versions:
MSOC went from F31BMM040-980 to F31BMM141-580
DSP went from 02.26.08 to 02.26.09
V-CPU went from F31BHV003-500 to F31BHV070-580
Base model here dual screen. Update seems to finish successfully and reboots but the version numbers never change. Still on the old ones
Thanks!
No problem!
The folder for 2021 seems to only contain the files for the Base option. When I download and upzip the only files there are for the Base option. No Mid or High option files. Am I missing something? Thanks
One the main file when i unzip it js showing up as an unarchiver one file type. How do i get it to show as a pkg
I have a 2019 Crosstrek and I have to update the head unit. I do not have an option to update wirelessly. Any idea how to update my unit? I have Software Version Rel4.18.11.50
Just an FYI for those doing this, be sure to turn off the Auto Start Stop before starting the update if you decide to drive while doing the update. Once the update starts, you have no access to any controls for ASS, fan speed, heated seats, etc. If you drive while updating and have to stop, the engine will shut off if Auto Start Stop is not disabled.
Hi! I was wondering if when you turned the climate control button ('ON/OFF') the bottom black rectangle button just blanked out or if you still had the air recirculating figure or something on there? Mine appears blank and I'm not sure of that is how it is supposed to look.
Thank you for the video! Super helpful!
Yea if the system is off the center black rectangle will be blank
Hello, does have this US/Ca version other languages as well? I would like to try it in Europe version. Or this version is only for America's vehicles? Do you see in settings more languages? Thank you very much.
There is a new version for Android Auto with full screen update. I just did that few days ago. Finally full screen for Android maps!!!!! Woohooo!!!
2021 Subaru outback unlimited. Updated successfully. The firmware upgrade itself takes about an hour.
This seem to be a release candidate version ,just hope that our car eill still catch ota update after that one !
Is the link to files still valid? I keep getting the 404 page not found error?
Do you need to have the latest update for this to work? Or can I skip other updates and go straight to this one
You can skip and go with this one
Wondering if this is just a US thing.
I just bought a '22 Outback in the UK and it's got the older UI, would really like to get the update but my local dealership doesn't seem to know anything about it.
You can do it via WIFI. Just did it on my 2021 OB Premium. Worth it.
@@EveryD1 I tried checking for updates over WiFi but it said it was on the latest available version. Maybe something has changed since. I'll give it another go.
‘23 models now have WIRELESS Apple CarPlay available. Does this update to ‘20-22 models enable wireless CarPlay on them, or is wireless CarPlay a hardware-related feature that’s exclusive to ‘23 and up???
The new ones have a wireless transmitter installed which allows for it to happen, the 22 and before dont have this, you can add something aftermarket though. Thats what I have heard anyways but I havent looked in to it.
@@hanksgarage_ Ah okay, thanks! Yeah aftermarket dongle hubs do indeed exist that make it so you don’t have to run a full length cord to wherever you’ve placed your phone physically. I’m sure it’s nice to have it built in, though.
Do you by any chance know if it works on 2020 Outback Touring? It has ventilated seats.
I tried last night. It worked well on the Touring model. Thank you!
Glad it worked for you
I’m wondering why my dealer said there’s not a new update. I have a warranty maintenance scheduled next week and when I was on the phone scheduling, I mentioned this update and he said there wasn’t one?
there is an update for sure... show them the TSB in the title of this video.
Got the same BS from my dealer last year for an earlier update. First they said there isn’t one. Then they admitted there is an update available but would only do it if there is a safety issue reported. So I said ok, what if the current software sucks and is so difficult to use that I could crash. So they gave me a weird look and did it. I believe they avoid doing updates because it hogs up a service bay too long. Can’t trust dealers regardless of the brand they support 😐
Thats capitalism brother, its all for the almighty dollar.
i tried to update my 2022 OBW twice and it stopped with incomplete update. Trying to update from F51XHM121-170 to F51XHM141-480. After incomplete, I had to wait for update setup to initialize both times (around 15 minutes). Maybe the OBW doesn't work for 2022?
I WANT this update! May try again, but worst case, she'll be going to the dealer soon for scheduled maintenance and hopefully dealer can handle it for me then. Only thing I can think of that may have caused issue is, they specify 16 GB or more on USB. Mine is 8 GB. They say no other files or folders. Mine had the Windows created folder "System Volume Information", which I have now removed for my next try.
UPDATE: I got ahold of a 16 GB (SanDisk Cruzer 3.0) and made sure there were no extra files other than the 4 supplied in the OBW folder. Update worked per the video. Thank you!
Has anyone done this with a Autostop Eliminator installed? I'm curious if there were any issues with that.
I have it installed in this car. No issues at all with it
@@hanksgarage_ Thanks...appreciate the feedback!
Do you know if it works for outbacks that are sold in Latin America?
I don’t see why it wouldn’t
The link to the Guide above opens a Subaru Service Bulletin from 2020, and it doesn't look like the document shown in the video above. Is it the correct document, or can we get the one that talks specifically about this software update like in the video?
Try it now, its the first link
@@hanksgarage_ Thanks!
Hey Hank I want to make sure I can use the files also on 2022 legacy is that correct?
Some people have reported here that it works on legacy’s
Outback 2016??? 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
How did you format your flash drive... NTFS, FAT32, exFAT ??
Want to say it’s fat32. It should say in the documentation
Instructions call for NTFS. But I did that and the thumb drive is not being recognized. I will try again with another drive. Any ideas? Thanks.
What about Australian Outback’s, will it work in Australia?
Probably not. Just had someone say it doesn’t work with euro cars
@@hanksgarage_ thank you
The source for the update file is a google drive, but how do we know its a trustworthy source? The site does not appear to belong to Subaru, but is someone named Kumar Challa. This makes me question; who is this person? Are they legitimate or are they some software expert that edited original update files with extra code that uploads your data somewhere (while your phone is connected)? I just always steer clear of unknown resources.
If you don’t trust it have Subaru do it. Simple.
Your Auto button is AC on mine! I'd prefer Auto... can't find a way to customize.
Scan through all vehicle settings. I have "recirculation"
Just uploaded a short on how to change it

I was trying to go to the link for the files on the video, but it gives me an Error. Please help
I just checked it and still working, its something on your end
@@hanksgarage_ yes it does. Thank you kindly
Must be windows fat format or os extended journal format and put the files straight to the usb stick without any folders
Will this work for legacy. I downloaded it and tried on a Sandisk usb and it didn’t work
Some people here have reported that it has, but I am not personally aware if thats official from subaru or not.
I updated my 2022 Legacy yesterday as I finally got it to work. I had trouble with the software update no recognizing the USB. Even though I had the 4 files outside the folder it didn't work until I completely emptied the drive, opened the file in another location and just put the 4 files back on the USB then it worked like a charm.
I have a 22 also. Android auto does not work at all.
yea hopefully they fixit for you guys, Subaru essentially took 3 years to get this far though, completely asinine.
My Android Auto stopped working a couple months ago. At first I thought it might be a faulty cable, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Hopefully this update fixes whatever stability issue they have going on.
How the fuck did you get AVH to stay on the permanent bar at the bottom? My '24 doesnt even do this ;_;
Work on Outback?
Yes this is on an outback
Can I do this using a MacBook Pro?
To set the thumb drive up? I don’t see why not
You need to format with NTFS, mac likely doesn't support it
I tried with my mac and it does NOT work. You will need access to a windows computer for both formatting the flash drive (to NTFS) and copying over the download files.
it didn't work on mine
Then you made an error.
@@eskieman3948don't think so. Did everything exactly like he said
@@3AAAs I ran into an issue where the file kept getting corrupted when I was trying to download it. I ended up using a different computer and it worked perfectly the first time.
unfortunately the update is not applicable for Subaru in EU, my 21'Outback indicated it as unsuccessful update...
Thanks!
No problem!
