Thanks for this survey. I love the Kempff. As you say, he was such a sincere musician.
You're welcome. The Kempff is quite special and it's different from all other Goldbergs on piano that I know.
My first time with Kempff's Goldberg, thank you. What you said about him fits his other recordings too: nothing artificial there. And the improvisatory feel. I don't know much about the pianists' routines but I have a feeling that if there are really some different, distinct approaches how to remember pieces, he must have been on the learning music by ear side. That's the impressions I have listening to him. That he knew music.
Oh, and btw, Yunchan Lim is going to play Goldberg at Carnegie next year. 25.04.25. I'm jealous!

Luckily these dg recordings of Goldberg variations are not your top recommendations! I admire you so much that I’d have found quite odd you’d have considered them as top choices..😅
Not necessarily my top recommendations, true, but they are so fascinatingly diverse that I felt they warranted a discussion.

@@jdistler2 one question Jed: do you agree about the almost unequalled quality of the touch along with a colorful sound Kempff was able to produce when in top form?
@@michelangelomulieri5134 I certainly agree with you in regard to Kempff's best recordings. Three favorite examples of this are in his Bach G Major English Suite (DG), the two Liszt Legends (Decca) and the 1945 broadcast of Fauré's Sixth Nocturne.
