Had two of these and only bought the second one because the first was written off when someone drove straight into my side from a side road. These cars are great, easy to work on and for not a lot of money. Both my starlets got over 90,000 miles(and counting), and never burnt any oil. Whilst they are very reliable they still require maintenance long term once the millage gets high. Replaced front and rear shocks, new discs and pads, rear brake shoes, front wheel bearings (around 90,000 miles), replaced outer CV boots( very hard to do because the CV joint will "not detatch"( like most will) off the driveshaft had to cut them off with a disc cutter buying a new CV joint and boots). Just about to replace for the second time the cambelt and rollors (did the first one at 29,000 miles now at 90,000 miles. I would buy one of these cars again in a heartbeat, very very reliable and not a lot of money. All the above work I did myself. Not amazing on fuel but regularly get around 46mpg .
the absolute bomb proof car with legendery 4EFE engine.thousands of them still around in Greece,no one wants to sell them.tons of cheap spares.I got mine last april and had to say that Greeks count it as a classic already.Big club here,glanzas,gt ,and original..some examples clock 800.000 km!!!!!!!!
@@SeasideGarage comparing with 4efe the glanza with 4efte engine is day to night..very fast..reliability is about 300.000km accordingly before main problems..depends to driver offcourse
Great video. My Starlet is a 99 w/175,000 km. 1300cc w/a 5 sp manual. It's the best, most dependable car I've ever owned. Have had it since 2018. Love it, love it, love it. Just recently had the cambelt, pullys etc. done. In NZ cars over a certain age have to be inspected 2x per year. The mechanics who work there all love it, too. They call it The Little Red Warrior. lol
I have 98 one, I fitted kyb gas shocks and Kilen sport springs with poly bushes, handles amazingly and far from dull. Brilliant little car. It might be worth checking in with a Toyota dealer about a recall for the airbag, I had mine changed recently for free.
Toyota actually wrote the owner telling them to seek a toyota dealer for the recall.... amazing service on such an old car! It handles very very well...
This is an excellent review! I especially want to point out how you described the power output - spot on! I have a P8 and when i bought it it had some problems and it was sluggish and your review helped me get a picture of how it could generally behave. So i had a sense that something was wrong and after a mechanic went over it indeed turned out the the timing belt was 2 teeth off! well, he fixed it and afterwards the engine behaved in same way as with P9; very torquey and quite zippy in lower RPMs but later not much is happening. exactly. i think theres no point in revving it, just shift a higher gear and let it continue being in torque sweet spot. I also want to mention the very comfortable seats.
I had a the previous generation, these cars are absolutely bullet proof. People always say how 90's Toyota is legendary for their reliability, and needless to say that little car never ever let me down and considering how it was 25+ years old I was stunned just how it required 0 maintenance apart from the occasional oil change, oil filter and spark plugs. The only thing, which is correctfully pointed out is that rust claims then eventually, and also the paint on these things is pretty weak so lots of them drive around with oxidized paint or clear coat failure. Mechanically though, they're just invincible :)
...Its really one of those cars where you begin to doubt if its actually necessary to change oil and filters.... It just seems to go one no matter what you do to it... apart from rust. This had a leak and noise from the servopump around 7 years ago... that went away.... no issues since... nothing done... :O
Starlets are great little cars. There are still a few around, remarkable for a bread-and-butter supermini when you think that even the youngest ones must be 22 years old now. The Starlet name should be brought back, far better than Yaris.
I also drive a Starlet from 98. It's the best car i have ever had. Bought it Januari 22 with 238.000 km and now it has 305.000 km. Only parts that failed were a rotten oil pan and the driveshaft boots. Other than that just oil changes every 15000 km and normal maintenance
I bought one as a run around after my Celica blew up on me at my parents house in Belgium when i visited from Scotland and bought it for £700 with 72k, Its my daily, or was until some idiot 2 weeks ago pulled out without looking. Buying it back from insurance to fix it as its not much, new wing, headlight and bonnet. 87,000 miles and more reliable than my Leon Cupra lol. 75hp in a 800kg car is good. its almost 100hp per tonne ratio. Me and my mate are going to turbo it in the summer make around 130hp on 0.9 of boost with stock internals. glanza stock is 130hp. I don't think they all rust though, these are one of the japanese cars that don't suffer from rust. mine's a 1998 and it has 0 rust anywhere. not even undersealed yet although it will be done at some point to prevent rust. any car with 4E-FE engines will outlive every car out today. I also had a dead insect in mine until I took my guage out to replace the bulbs lmao
I've got a Starlet too. I changed the manual transmission fluid in steps. The previous repair shop did never replaced that. I wouldn't recommend doing it all at once, as the transmission can malfunction when it had never replaced transmission fluid. But I did by taking about 200 ml out and 200 ml in, several times. And then draining everything out and put new fluid in. Also parts from the Toyota dealer can be quite expensive. But the aftermarket brand Aisin is basically Toyota itself. So, that is a really good option at least when Aisin offers that part.
@@SeasideGarage Thanks, but it only applies when: 1) You don't know if it was ever replaced 2) You know it has been long ago that it was replaced. When your service interval is in order, go ahead and renew it when it is time.
Tell me about expensive dealer prices....I've had loud injectors since owning it 2 years ago soon and my mate who works at Arnold Clark asked his parts manager to see how much it would cost for 4 injectors with his 20% staff discount, they wanted £820 for all 4 lol, more than I paid for the car, bought a set of used ones for £20 but they tick as well now so gonna clean them up.
Had one 1997, same engine as the corolla but different gearbox. Always used to bang my head getting into it as the roof comes down too far to meet the top of the door. Got 115mph out of it. 2 models available in Ireland with and without power steering... power steering €1000 extra 😕
Cool vid and a quality car that benefits from the Toyota reliability. A friend of mine had one for 5 years, said they were good drivers. That 90's trim though, could've been a Peter Schmeichel shirt!

i am SO glad im not the only one with the Steering wheel thing, i have a P8 Starlet (Model before this one) and i made sure to buy one without an airbag for the same reason!
Thinking of buying one of these in coming months when I desperately need a car that -doesn't sip alot of fuel because gas prices are right now insane -reliable -is great looking and this thing looks adorable -has driverside airbag -doesn't cost alot -trunk to fill in stuff I need like tool box and some other stuff just in case my question is tho that do the rear seats fold down?

Got a 99 a week ago love it got tein lowering springs and 14inch alloys but handles terribly, thinking polybush, anti lift kit and strutts hope it turns it into a go kart BUT my fuel economy is dreadfull hope a full service and 02 sensor with sort it Picked up a glanza scoop And putting mx5 nb tombstone seats in it
One question mate, what is the sound that you say in 11:25 to 11:34? A very worn bearing on...? i have a whining sound from my engine too, and i dont know what can it be, this is the only video that mention it and i can hear it! if you can help me! Ty man, great video!

Hi @seaside garage, im own a 97 model starlet the car has done 200k, what would you suggest for lite/cheap mod for improve better handling & brake system.
To be honest I dont know... Those mods are very hard to make in Denmark due to laws. But it is a pretty good handling car as stock in my opinion, so maybe refresh stuff? Good tires and so on. :)
All these Starlets of all models were absolutely bomb proof - dull but reliable - very reliable

Totally agree with you about Steering wheels! Got original 1979 momo r-sport volvo, on my volvo 242 and it totally changed the interior.

Bought a p9 starlet from 1998 in 2020. It had 95'000 km, now it has 113'000 km and has not let me down since. Great car!

Its the generator that is making the sound on this one... But some times its the Servopump og a very tight fan belt.. :)
I understand the steering wheel. Gripe. Iv removed my airbag system on my Vauxhall cavalier ( vectra A) just to have a none airbag steering wheel
