E.g. if there're often a thick fog, or worse: fog who seems to suddenly appear out of nowhere, you would want a radar, and a good one with a long range and details.
If one is sailing with very good visibility (e.g. > 8 nm), but a lot of commercial traffic, one would want an AIS transponder more than a radar.

I bought a 87 Catalina 36 and I love it, it’s not big and modern but I am slowly refitting her to my liking and sailing her around the bay every chance I get and eventually I will make it to the Caribbean
Love Beau & Brandy’s channel. It’s refreshing to see them sailing an old boat far when so many channels are just glossy catamaran ads these days. Pearson built a great boat, I used to have a 323.

We were laughing. Our fresh water systems cost more than the entire amount they’ve spent. Of course we’re all at different stages in life, experience, and desire. We do love the fact that they and we are sailing the same waters.
Good timing! I'm currently shopping for a 40-42 ft. monohull sailboat in the $100-150k range. I am finding decent boats, but most would require another $50k to refit for long distance cruising. Rigging, canvas, dinghy, sails, electronics, water maker, etc. all add up fast!
Very good point. Nearly all used boats on the market today seem to require extensive repairs/upgrades. Our $100K boat has required three years and another $75K to make it sea-ready - despite three recent surveys claiming it was "above average" condition.
Smaller boats are a lot cheaper, as in e.g. 3 ft less LOA, and half the cost of buying and maintaining it.
The reason a few ft smaller boat is so much cheaper is that *everything* on the boat is smaller. Think: Smaller engine, smaller mast, smaller sails, continue yourself.
Marine (inboard) engines are super expensive. Many small boats are only build for using a small outboard, and some boats has their outboard in a well, which makes e.g. maintenance so much easier.
My sail club's boats weight is 1.6 tonnes (3527 lb) and are 23 ft long (LOA). A 3 HP outboard is sufficient.

I bought a Dehler 39CWS from 1990 for 38.000EUR it needed the whole nine. So she got a new dodger, lazybag, instruments, AIS, liferaft, EPIRB, toilet, gas stove and oven, refrigerator , running rigging, MAIN, and a lot of soap and love. Now I have a great boat for roughly 50.000EUR that sails like a dream, it is not fitted for liveaboard. Nor long time cruising like you. But want I wanted to say your'e so right every person every budget can do it. You just need to adjust your'e convenience and luxury to your budget. Follow the dream get out there, and make some memories that money cannot buy.
if you want to get into it, you need to constantly check listings from many different sites and "sometimes" you find an estate sale or a boat that needs a realistic and achievable amount of TLC and you can get on the water with a reasonable budget. Buying the boat is the inexpensive part.

Sophie, my friend introduced me to this channel and let me just say you are so charismatic and have a wonderfully charming personality! Your videos have had me dreaming of sailing when...I've never really even *been* on a sailboat. I've never lived close to water. I'm afraid of the sun D: ~~~...but...perhaps somethings changed in me as I've suddenly fallen in love with boats! [Or perhaps it's just the idea of boats and water... Sometimes we dream of the unreachable, dream of the things we're ignorant of. But alas ~]
Your candid insight to the sailing life has captivated me time and time again (it's been less than two weeks and I've already seen so many of your adventures!!]. ♡ My friend has a sailboat in Sweden and I'm hoping to at least get to set foot on it once when I fly across the Atlantic this summer!!! Or perhaps if that's not an option, I can stare admirably from a distance ~

I would like to tell you that you shouldn't believe the marketing guys from the production boat companies who want you buy a long, and thus very expensive, boat.
A few ft extra boat-length about *doubles* The price of the boat, doubles maintenance cost, and doubles maintenance time.
Why? Because *everything* becomes bigger.
There's also averange maintenance cost of a boat which is about 10% / year of the purchasing price of the boat. Less if it's very new.
*It's very important to know that you can have the same amount of fun in e.g. a small 18 ft boat, compared to a much larger boat*
If you want to sail on big boats: If you keep you promises and shows up when you promised to do , you can easily become a crew member of OPBs (Other People's Boats).
For your own safety, asses the vessel's seaworthiness before you do so.

We have a bene 393 for survey this week. There was a bene 40 2008 for sale at £96k but it was snapped up. Most boats for sale need rigging, sails, thru hulls, electronics, seals, cutlass, solar etc etc regardless of age unless your buying stuff less that ten years old. Less than ten years old and much of the production boat stuff looks to have very variable construction particularly on the interiors. At least with the pre 2007/8 boats they mostly look to be solid and worth upgrading.
yep, that's been what we've seen going on too, and you are right, most boats for sale usually need some serious maintenance. Even when we bought Polar Seal and she was only 7 years old, the first couple of years of ownership were brutal budgetwise. Which is such a turnoff when we think about boat number two :p

One chap I was watching sailed a Hurley 18 accross the Atlantic.. Cruised the Caribbean.. Went through the Panama Canal.. Sailed right across the Pacific visiting all the islands along the way and ended up in Darwin where he met his life partner!..
The thing is that he probably only paid £500 for his little Yacht..
I would like to know how he had fitted his boat for a crossing of the Atlantic Ocean..

Yes, the western world (and boat prices) has changed considerably since the pandemic. And now general inflation is running crazy across the planet. Just the 30% increase in food/diesel/insurance alone makes ocean cruising much more expensive than it was just four years ago.
I had decided to build my own boat because I has a lot more time than money (1 work 24h/week, 4 days * 6h).
The boat is optimized for economic sailing, e.g. diesel-electric propulsion, because that will easily save one 30% fuel, because there's no longer a mismatch between the engine's and the shaft's RPM and torque.
Many boats available in Guaymas Mex from free ( project) and many around 5 to 10k that don't need much work. And of course some are much more. Only issue is that you need to travel there.

Just bought a fresh water sailed , blue water boat , fully factory glassed in hull to deck joint ready to sail away for well under 30k Canadian . She is old ,but well cared for and with all the upgrades needed save for a water maker . Solid glass hull below waterline . 35 foot , pilot house , center cockpit aft cabin , variable draft . A ton of really good owner upgrades . I would rather an older proven design well cared for than a newer cheap production boat maybe not well cared for before you . ( see Parley revivals latest Video for why )
I still expect to put 30 K into it , what with all new sails , water maker , washing machine and some instrument upgrades . But save for a chartplotter (owner kept it ) , I could go the way she is . That 40k in and she will be in bristol condition and ready to explore the remotest locations .
Any way , the point is there are still great boats to be had well below what they are worth in parts alone . You do not have to buy a boat you can not sail and spend years fixing it .

Another great video. Prices certainly did peak during the pandemic but have pulled back a little although not to pre pandemic prices. I think there is also a YT effect with more and more people getting into sailing / liveaboard and with modern production boats and electronics sailing has probably never been more simple, that’s not to say there aren’t many challenges out there with weather and things that go wrong at 3am. Although the initial investment has increased, one can still sail on a budget, anchorage vs marina, eating on board vs restaurants and learning how to do as many boat jobs as you can

The same goes with cars. A Citroën DS sold in the 90S had no value, today they go for 30K.
This pandemic has broken millions of folks, and many spent it on YT, the internet ...
Folks are leaving cities and become minimalists, other move into RVs or Boats.

Always love your videos and so awesome to see B³ We have friends that just bought a Beneteau 473 in Greece and we happen to be here in Malta when they hauled her for the first time. She's in great shape and other the usual fixes an older boat that's been sitting requires, they'll be crossing the Atlantic next winter for less than $10k of additional work. So for less than $150k they have a home that will go anywhere. Sounds like a lot but have you priced even a tiny home these days? 😢 The world's gotten crazy expensive!
Firstly, yacht world listing are always higher priced. Searched a 1990 40ft Beneteau. First one I saw was 85,000 in the states. Some were 100k to 109k.

You can buy a 2018 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 389 for around 110k from a charter - which are regularly serviced, and get everything fixed as they prep for sale at the end of the year. Chasing Latitudes is a good channel for this, also a 40 foot 2018 Beneteau for 130kish . These are post hurricane boats. You shouldn't be paying 100k for a 2007 boat, when you can get one pretty much ready for island hoping for about the same 2018.

Saoirse is a Pearson 35 designed in the late '60s by Bill Shaw while Uma is a Pearson 36-1 designed in the early '70s by Bill Shaw, so there are going to be similarities. However, they are very different boats. My boat (which, BTW, I bought before the pandemic) is a Pearson 365, which is very different from both Saoirse and Uma. I have been sailing various boats for over 30 years and planning to move onto the boat nearly as long. I view your channel (and others like it) as filling in the parts of my education that I am missing. One of the things I want to know is, after you have bought the boat and outfitted it, what are the general expenses (day-to-day/month-to-month) to sail the Caribbean and beyond. What I have found is that, like so many things in life, the costs vary a lot depending on how you do it. I saw one channel say that you couldn't possibly do it for under $70k/year, but I have seen other channels who are doing it for much less.
So I’m chasing the dream on a construction worker budget and not the boss I work with tools HVAC and Plumbing. I have a plan of stages, decided that the wife and I should live on the boat at marina first. We purchased 1980 Pearson 40 for 20k in Above Average condition per survey. Basically a blank canvas , everything works but previous owner raced not cruised. So I need to purchase about 10k in gear batteries and the like. Plan on doing the work myself. Honestly I’m very jealous of your boat and thought you bought new. Nice to see that you guys are not to much different then I am thanks

I still can't get why you are not on the top of the sailing channels...well pandemic really hit hard on you..stopped your climb to the top and delayed revenues forcing to step a little back. It's a true pity as your contents are way over those produced by others and you deserved (and deserves) way more

Its still possible to find more affordable boats, we purchased an Elan 431 back in September for £11k, though it was pure luck! She had just come into the boatyard after a year of cruising and the sellers wanted to go off around the world by bus (WTF!) and wanted cash urgently. So many boats are getting cut up here in Scotland as well that have nothing wrong with them, just people cannot afford the yard fees etc. So, if you want some cheap boats, HEAD TO SCOTLAND!
Not to mention, Scotland is an absolutely GORGEOUS place to sail (if a tiny bit gruesome at time ;))

Sophie you would love any shoe company that sponsored you. I am a fan of your videos but I like them better when $$$ is not the theme. Anyone that has had a boat for any length of time knows it costs a fortune and well people may dream about sailing around the world, very few people ever even try. Even people fully Dedicated to cruising may cross one ocean but even that is rare. I would bet most don’t make it to the next port. Anyway I enjoy seeing the fun and cherry, Sophie, not the one that’s analyzing how much it cost to go to sailing. You know the cute one that makes fabulous food and does the hair flip! But yes we all need to earn a living and that does get in the way. Best wishes. Oh and the dog is cute too!

My own moves are substantially more modest than most, and my singlehander project is about to get strip planked in my backyard. It will have a Root berth (named after a former US Secretary of State & yachtsman) and a pop top cabin, which for me will be a serious upgrade in creature comfort from the over 3,000 miles (48,000km) I voyaged in open boats. Around the world? No. Great Loop and coastal-estuary work? Yes.
There is a vessel and a voyage for every budget.
Vessis are good. But if you leave them on deck in the rain, they fill up.

Cruisers all have Dodgers and Biminis. Most can enclose the cockpit.

I bought a 1996 Oceanis for €43k 2022. The engine, diesel heater and windless are the only things I didn’t replace. €37k later I’m ready to go. Unfortunately trying to register the boat under an Irish flag 🇮🇪 is like giving birth to a pineapple by anus sphincter only😮😢
There are a lot of people with silly inflated ideas of the value of their boats, the used car market has crashed from it's pandemic highs and boats will surely follow.

That boats a death trap. Electric motor, very little battery. There will come a day when they need to get the heck of dodge and cannot. I drive an EV. So many experiences where i was screwed due to lack of charge, but my life wasn't on the line.
The correct answer for how much it costs is ALL OF IT. However much you budget for a boat, you will spend a little more than that. However much you have for a monthly cruising budget, you'll spend all of it. However much you budget for maintenance, you'll spend every dime, plus a little.
It doesn't matter if the number is a couple grand for a boat and a couple grand a month, or if it's a million dollar boat and $20k a month. All of it.

The boat market is starting to tank, as the economy of the entire world is rolling over. Even the Fed Reserve held off on lowering interest rates. As boat slips continue to rise and as inflation continues to rise, but the economy is on the brinks of a collapse like `2007-`09, there will be no available boat slips to rent once all the sailboats come back to the States for hurricane season. That being said, this year's hurricane season is expected to be a big one! So because of that, people will be competing with everyone else to sell their sailboats, and not wanting to purchase a new one because labor and fiberglass resins and materials just jumped up to all new highs. Also, credit card lending is at an all new high with credit card interest rates climbing to 30%. So is boat insurance! So the bottom of the boat market is about to drop out and prices are about to dump!!! Also the stock market is also where everything else is at, at an all time bubble and the bubble is about to pop! So just wait for the dump is you are going to buy a sailboat, if you want a sailboat even when the market dumps.

Go see how and why the Moorings is dumping all their sailboats in their rental fleets. They had the worst rental season in 12yrs. Kansas is going bye bye!

boats under 100k , you are just buying a headache. if you want to do it comfortably the bigger the better and the latest model you can afford. i have been sailing for over 40years. My wife and i have a 2018 jenneau 57. A great cruising and comfortable boat.

Sailing with Thomas did a recent episode about going full electric.
They worked on their boat for 2.5 years. Think about how much money 2 people working 2.5 years. That is easily 100k. Perhaps 200k. Buying an old boat is not always cheaper.
One solution is to buy a boat older than 2005.
In my honest opinion, most of the people will not sail forever. Savings run out and not every couple can make a living out of YT. It is noticeable that YT is flooded with sailing couples. So eventually most of the couples will abandon that life in 2, 3, 4 years... and the boats will come back to the market. I live in a house with garden and swimming pool. When covid came it wasn´t a big trouble for me, but I understand for many people it was traumatic and after the pandemic they went in mass to consume holidays or start a RV/boat life. But you can´t live in a permanent holiday. Work, bills, kids are part of life.
Budget cruising is not cool. Spending every dollar i have on my boat is reality.
I don't understand. You talk about the lovely Beau and Brandy spending so little over many years on a project boat. Then you switched focus to ignore the project boat option to look only at the newish production boats.
I realise that is where your comfort zone is but it would have been more consistent to look at the current situation for cheap project boats with low budget refits. Look at Wilding Sailing refitting a Wharram as an EU example.

This was pretty underwhelming . The title suggested some kind of breakdown but all we got is a tour of someone’s boat but nothing about the cost of owning/living or anything. The video ends with a statement that invalidates what was said in the minutes before… hmm 🤔
Whatever the price you think it will cost, double it. All the money you spend is no longer making money elsewhere and long term this is profound. Plan on retiring? Factor long term investment losses.

Well, if one accepts the fact, that size has its disadvantages, especially if you plan to be able to sail even in storms alone, so your wife can rest and vice versa, do NOT BUT ABOVE 36 FEET! I bought a 1984, 33 Ft Long Keel Sailboat with no electronics, no gimmics, heavy, sturdy and in pristine condition, for 29'000 Euros. I worked like a dog, invested about another 120'000 Euros, saving it from my mouth, each and every month, for 10 years and now I know my Sailboat inside inside out. I rather prepared her, fully, before I leave for good, then hoping and worrying all the time. End of Mai we leave Spain, going towards the Carribbean and then only God nows. My Sailboat is rigged as a SURVIVAL DEVICE. I don't need Harbours, only for Provisions. No Luxury really, but when the WEF COUNTRIES go crazy again, I can go stealth mode. Look for a sturdy boat, not a shiny and fast one. And remember, that in the 1980there was a 30 to 33 Ft Sailboat already a BIG ONE.

The idea that you can "buy a boat cheap and get out there" has been around for decades--and it's always been true, but misleading. The reality is what you show with B&B--yes, you can do it on a budget of less than $50,000, but you need to do tons of work and likely put at least another $20,000 into the boat. You will also have to be willing to sacrifice comfort. Then, when you are out cruising, you probably need at least $20,000/year to cover expenses--on a tight budget. You'll either need savings or some kind of income stream--and I'd guess a UA-cam channel isn't enough of an income stream for most🙂
Yep, it's been over a year of hard work and fiberglass nasty work and with all the new equipment I could have bout a smaller brand new one, but that's how it goes.
@@aaronha994 The new boat would have been a lot smaller, especially now. New boat prices are crazy. A new Beneteau 30.1 is over $200,000. And new prices often fail to reflect that you still need $XX,000 to "finish" the boat with nice to have items like instruments, sails, and bottom paint.

J'allais hurler juste avant de voir la toute dernière minute. Comme tous les prix qui ont monté inconsidérément pendant la pandémie, le prix des bateaux est en train de subir une très grosse correction. PROSPECTIVE : Je dirais même que le prix des bateaux, comme des logements, va continuer à baisser et n'est pas prêts de s'arrêter. 1 Tous les constructeurs visent les gens aisés et les fleet de location, qui occupent les places de port. Il n'y a plus de place à pas cher, voir il n'y a plus de place du tout. 2 La population baisse, le nombre d'acheteurs baisse, le chômage baisse, les annonces de recrutement fleurissent, et les annonces pour bateaux aussi. YOUPII c'est bon pour la planète. Mais pour les cinquantenaires, pas glop. Tous les biens dont ils ont gentiment fait monter les prix toute leur vie vont perdre de la valeur, et ça va faire mal et c'est pas prêt de s’arrêter parce que la baisse de la population ne ralentit pas, au contraire. Ha j'ai failli oublier : le pris des annonces n'est pas le prix de vente. La réalité c'est encore bien moins que ça, surtout en période de baisse où tout le monde se regarde en chien de faïence en attendant le premier qui va craquer.
