Hi everyone can someone tell me whats shortining actually is and where can i get it?

Shortening, made from vegetable oils, is a solid alternative to butter and margarine in baking and dessert making. Unlike butter, it doesn’t melt at room temperature, making it easier to work with. Its pale yellow color also results in a less yellowish appearance for Char Siu Bao compared to butter's brighter yellow.

I tried this recipe twice. Each time the finished Bao tasted raw and floury. I think I should steam for more than 8 minutes.

There is no harm to steam longer. It depends on the size of Char Siu Bao and the heat to steam.
