This was when Dean had bought his 1st racing car, a Porsche Speedster marked #33, before he filmed "Rebel' in April of 1955. He's very happy and lively here, enjoying his most exciting hobby. He actually won two medals for his efforts- which whet his appetite for more competitions. Regrettably, additional victories were to elude him. He was on his way to Salinas in his new silver Porsche Spyder on 9/30- just five months later- to participate in the races of October 2nd, when the fatal crash occurred.
Right, I don't know if it's because he defined "the look" or encapsulated it but he had "IT"! As far as how he dresses and styles his hair or even how he moves through the crowd...it all looks so very modern. It could almost be today. I've never before seen this footage in color always in black and white before.
He sure loved his ciggies. However, he and I did have a common start in racing. I started with a Porsche Speedster and later owned and raced a Porsche RSK 718 Spyder. I was serious about racing and never smoked. Still alive at 86 (2020) and still miss racing.
Thanks for sharing, it’s so cool to see Jimmy racing.💜✨ I just visited James Dean’s hometown in Fairmount Indiana, I collected some wildflowers and placed it on his grave. I posted a video tour on my channel for anyone that would like to see James’ hometown, the house he grew up in and the James Dean gallery. ✌️💕
I believe James Dean set the tone for all men forever after him with his look of just being cool and smooth. I see Elvis, Robert Redford, Brad Pitt and so many others. Compare him at 24 to the 24 y/o's now. What a drastic change.
Montage of great!!. The music is also consistent with the period of James Dean. As much as I am a lover of rock music, I associate more jazz a James Dean, remembering the music he played with the jazz conga. James Dean as rock symbol present, was not existent at the time. Also the soundtrack of The Wild One with Brando's jazz.
Very true. I guess because James Dean has been mentioned in so many rock songs, we tend to forget that he was gone right before rock n' roll was born. Also, I think it kinda hurts too much to remember that he's been gone so long.
In 1955, rock 'n' roll was ruled by Bill Haley, he was HUGE back then (Bill Haley started pop rock and roll, in 1953 he has two songs in top 100 charts). Although, Jimmy actually liked jazz music, also black blues (by Howlin' Wolf or Muddy Waters for example)
BTW, I remember the movie "The Wild One" really badly, but I think these bikers listened jump-blues, sort of "Drinkin Wine Spoo-Dee-Oo-Dee" from late 40s
Yes, this is terriffic. Thank you!!! And set to the Eagles timeless song about him. Perfect. Lots of rare photos and video here. Well done. Oh yea, the airplane hangar on the left at 3:12 is still there today. At Santa Barbara Airport........cool.

I love seeing the pictures of James Dean, he was very unique, and as an actor too. I wish he made it to his next race that fatal day. He must have been a chain smoker, which was cool then, but really was not (what it could do to the body). The impact he did make during his short life though. (Elvis admired James Dean, they probably would have met if both lives were not cut short.)
